View Full Version : Fanatic Online Issue 90 - Review

05-05-2007, 16:27
This issue out a little earlier than usual because I’m on holiday (vacation) for the next few weeks.

Firs up we have house rules for a BFG Black Templar Space Marine Fleet list. Written by Battlefleet Gothic rules guru, Ray Bell. Read it now. (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/FO90BFGBList.pdf)

Next up we have a fantastic campaign supplement by Firuz the Accursed and his fellow Inquisitors gamers. One of the best ever Fanatic Online articles I’ve ever published in my humble opinion. Warning – it's a very large file, over 620MB. Read it now. (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/Croneworld.pdf)

The third and final article is yet another army list this time for Epic. None other than an experimental Chaos Space Marine Death Guard army list. Thanks to Eoin Whelan for supplying this. Read it now (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/Death_Guard_v1.pdf).

Eoin has also provided me with the next version of the Emperor’s Children army list, which can be found on the Epic Experimental Rules (http://www.specialist-games.com/epic/Vault.asp) page.

We also now have a new Blood Bowl Player Aid, a very practical Match record sheet. Thanks to Kevin Schoemehl for supplying this. Download from the Blood Bowl Player Aids (http://www.specialist-games.com/bloodbowl/playera.asp) page.

As well as that we also have a new version of the Online Rulebook, a ‘clean’ and complete version with all the fonts in the same colour (as opposed to some passages in red to highlight the changes). Download from our Blood Bowl Rulebook (http://www.specialist-games.com/bloodbowl/rulebook.asp) page or simply click here (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/CompHandbook.pdf) (large file – 7.1MB).

As I said in an earlier entry unfortunately, for the first time in six years, I can’t attend this year’s Blood Bowl tournament as I’m off gallivanting around the US. I’d like to wish everyone who’s attending and whom I usually bump into at this event well and hope you all have a good tournament. Jervis says he’ll be on hand so please go and have a chat with him.

I shall talk to you all again later on in the month.

For now,
Andy @ Fanatic

Brief reviews of the articles to come. At the moment just reading through it there are 3 Force List, a massive Inquistor Campaign, and Blood Bowl player aids and the 'most' up to date rule book.

the Inquisitor campaign:
- Isn't very big (it's just under 690 Kb, nowhere even remotely near 620MB)
- Is designed for 28mm (hence why they have things like Orks and Tau Fire warriors)
- Is poorly explained (How in hell did the Tau get onto a Croneworld? Why would Eldar build *anti*psychic devices?)
- Isn't actually set on a croneworld (there's nothing particularly "Croneworldy" about it, it's a generic Daemonworld setting)
- Is an unsuccessful attempt to hybrid D&D, Necromunda and Inquisitor
- Boils down to what is basically a D&D style series of random encounters.
- Is nowhere near one of the best Inquisitor articles Fanatic Online has ever published.
- Don't go to the URL on page 21. You cannot say I didn't warn you.

Not a good article. Death Guard list is quite fun though, haven't looked at the Black Templar fleet or the BB rulebook though.

Thanks for the quick review of the Inquistor Campaign.

The Black Templar Fleet is a neat idea, however I think it was poorly executed.

The idea of a building a Crusader Fleet is great and the variety of ships included fit well in name. The Assault Strike Cruiser is an interesting variant and makes sense. This is where it ends in my opinion. The Thunderhawk Annihilator is another idea that has merit and is not difficult to envision.

There are contradictions between the new ship entries and the fleet list (points wise). The Devastator Strike Cruiser, while being a neat idea, it's entry is full of mistakes being better than the Assault SC while being cheaper. I do not like how the Forgeship was executed, I think it needs to provide the fleet with a few very long range lances and some kind of sensor aid.

Overall it is a mixed article - parts of it are excellent and well designed while others parts look like the attempts of a power hungry player trying to get a small edge.

Epic Death Guard army list

I am always for more Epic list.

The Legion of Festering Death (Silver Scythes) background seems to imply that they are one of the two unknown/lost legions.

The list is fairly solid, the biggest complaint so far (from the community) being that the Nurgle Titans seem to be quiet a bit more powerful than their Undivided counterparts. It is probably that the next version of the list will modify these a bit.

I am not going to actually review the other links - they are there as information not articles.

So overall - eh - the issue is not that great, the best article being an in-development Death Guard list.

- Don't go to the URL on page 21. You cannot say I didn't warn you.

Why not? By telling me not to you have perked my curiosity massively... but I don't want to risk it if it's just gonna dump a virus on my computer. Why shouldn't we go to the url?

09-05-2007, 17:51
Because it's gonna dump a virus on your computer

I should know, it's my site.

Because Charax really doesn't like people linking to his stuff without his permission.

09-05-2007, 20:30
's true. I really don't.

30-05-2007, 13:54
I'm sorry, i just had to check it out. If that's your site, Kudos to you.

Stick it to the man.

:( I see no link on page 21 - and am sickeningly curious now..

Ok - now I see it - and I'm quite severely lol'ing myself.

31-05-2007, 00:26
Safe in the knowledge that the majority of viruses will confuse my computer (what is this .exe you speak of? I know it not!) I'm now going to have to have a look...

31-05-2007, 01:28
You too Minister...? oh right I have to reboot to use those file formats. But the link was impressive!

31-05-2007, 04:49
Humhum, I don't see a link on page 21 of the Inquisitor thingy ...

31-05-2007, 10:27
Hee hee. I went to the link, and it's quite amusing.

Is that actually yours Charax?

31-05-2007, 10:35
Yes, it is.

Ironically, it appears to be drawing more attention to that piece-of-crap article than it deserves, so I may take it down in a couple of days.

Everyone is remembering to NOT download the file, right?

31-05-2007, 11:34
Just give the the link here, thanks :D (to stop me from downloading it again). My curiousty factor is starting to be annoying ....
