Hurray! My first project log (..."Plog"?), maybe this will help me actually finish what I start! Comments and critiques are always welcome.

I'll start off with something big and Orky and fun - my looted Land Raider. This is the first vehicle I completed after a 5-year hiatus from gaming. It'll be one of the centerpieces for my 1500pt Ork Army.

A five year hiatus and you come back with that? I sense good tings are going to come out of this log :).

I particularly like all the scrap metal that's just bolted onto the sides, very characterful, although I don't think there's enough variation in materials, some more painted patches to break up the red a bit more would be awesome.

P.S, (sorry for the shamelessness of this plug) the warseer awards are back! Link in my sig, they need to attention to be successful :).

Love the looted Raider.

Really like the rusted metal effects.

Can you just talk me through it?

You got some nice models and conversions here. I especially like the combo. of parts used on the Sage. I would never have thought of using those parts to make one.

What's next for the Orks?

Ancientsociety
07-06-2007, 14:00
@Harry: If I remember correctly (I finished it last summer actually), it's undercoat black, liberal drybrush of dark brown, little less liberal drybrush of light brown, light drybrush of orange in certain spots (this is the easiest to overdo), light accentuating drybrush of boltgun metal

@no-use: Yeah, the ballistic savant turned out better than I expected. If anyone's wondering the parts I used are Eldar Vyper pilot torso, long booted Empire Militia legs, Empire Militia Blunderbuss arms and weapon, Catachan comlink, some 1:700 battleship parts (that's an AA turret for his earpiece!), and brass tubing.

Next for the Orks: I've finished building a Bad Dok, now all he needs is paint and a squad of CybOrks and their "Waaaaghmbulance". Also a Slugga Boyz squad is finished. For the future, I'll be adding Burna Boyz, Stormboyz, Kommandos, Bikerz....and my Battlewagon (a 1/35 Tamiya KV2 Gigant - pics coming soon!)

Besides that: very nice conversion work.

Nope, not completely finished but finished for the terms of the contest. Basically, it was build but leave unpainted/unprimed so that the judges and voters could see the extent of the conversion work.

At some point, I hope to get this fully painted and finished (the flame attack needs resculpting - which I'm not good at - and the groundcover, foliage, and hedges need to be added).

Well I'm back after a long hiatus from gaming or modeling of any kind. I'm looking forward to the newest Ork codex release and have made a commitment to actually finishing a 2000pt Ork army (including painting) which, believe it or not, would be my first finished army of that size since I started playing 40k back in 2nd ed!

In any case, I'll be logging my progress here. Comments/critiques/etc. are welcomed as always and hopefully will help keep me motivated to finish.

Here's a Hasslefree mini I just finished for fun (also an experiment w/ some Rackham paints).

I recently bought the WHFB Chapel and I'm in the process of converting it to a Redemptionist Chapel for my Necromunda/CoD board. The sideshed will house the boiler and assorted detritus, the other side will will have an elevated pulpit on the roof. I'm still unsure about the interior. I'm thinking a small shrine to the Emperor (LOTS of candles, of course) and perhaps a concealed weapons cache in the rear wall.

Comments/suggestions as always welcomed.

Well, here's what I've been working on over Xmas and New Year's. Unfortunately, my Dremel Stylus pooped out over the weekend, so it's taken longer than I like to work on these. How to make Outlanders-style Barricades w/ CoD sprue & Scraps in 5 minutes

Tutorial time!

Have you ever wanted to replicate those great little cardboard barricades from the Necromunda:Outlanders boxed set? How about if it only took ~5 minutes?

What you'll need:
-CoD Wall Sprues
-Plasticard scraps, gubbinz, interesting bitz, etc.
-Xacto Knife
-Sanding file or Nile file
-Plastic glue, Plastic Weld, and/or CA glue

Here's how:

1. Snip out the close parallel sprue in the middle of most of the CoD terrain sprues. Cut down and sand of any flash. I like to keep the injection pins attached to the sprue to provide structural integrity (and because I'm lazy) but you can get rid of them. Be sure to keep the slight angle in the sprue - DO NOT SAND IT TO A 90 degree ANGLE! When you're done it should look like this:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z217/ancientsociety79/2008_022508010001.jpg

2. Gather up your various plasticard scraps and bitz:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z217/ancientsociety79/2008_022508010002.jpg

3. Starting on one side, glue down your scraps until the sprue base. It's a good idea to have a certain general height in mind when assembling. Mine are about waist height on a typical 28mm GW mini.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z217/ancientsociety79/2008_022508010003.jpg

4. You can alternate different plasticard pieces, bitz, and textures to make it more convincing.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z217/ancientsociety79/2008_022508010004.jpg

Ancientsociety
28-02-2008, 20:00
5. When you have both side assembled, you'll notice that they slope gradually inward - just like the Outlanders kind! Like this:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z217/ancientsociety79/2008_022508010005.jpg

6. Using another scrap of plasticard, fill in the gap between the sides:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z217/ancientsociety79/2008_022508010006.jpg

7. That's it! Feel free to embellish your barricade w/ rivets, spikes, whatever

Really great stuff here. How are you bending the pipe sections for the refinery tower? I have wanted to do a refinery for a long time, but I am not sure how to bend the pipes.

You want to use the thicker style of plasticard piping. Turn your faucet on HOT and let it run for a bit. Now take the pipe and place it under the HOT running water for a minute or so. Then, keeping the pipe under water, SLOWLY bend it little by little. Don't try to bend it into the full angle right away or it will snap from the pressure. When you have it bent where you want it, turn the faucet on ICE COLD - this will set the bend.

Also, you can buy craft copper or aluminium pipe and pipe benders (they look like coiled springs) and bend it that way (but it's more expensive).

Thank you for the information. I have bent PVC pipes with heat guns, but I know this would just melt or collapse styrene plastic pipes. I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks.

Thanks everyone, it a great boost to my confidence hearing all the replies.

Please know that there is a BIG update coming very soon. I'm attempting to finish every single piece (with the exception of the Forge) you've seen so far so I have terrain for an upcoming Necromunda campaign (for Adeptus Windy City) I'll be running, starting on the 25th. So far every piece has been based, primed and undercoated. I'm nearly finished painted the Chapel and installing LEDs.

One down, four to go. I stayed up until 1am this morning to finish, knowing I'd have to wake up before 7 to get to work today (and, of course, our CEO didn't even show up!). Hope you all enjoy, it was a blast to finish this off.

(Sorry, the morning light is a bit too bright)

I like how it came out. A lot of nice detailing, like the electrical conduit on the outside of the building and yellow shut off valve. I always prefer old run down buildings. It gives them more character.

BUT, I'm STILL going - and this doesn't include all the tiny extra stuff: barricades, crate pallets, loot counters, etc!!!!

So what do I have planned?
-an Arbites Precinct House (this will be inspired primarily by the oppressive "Ministry" buildings in Terry Gilliam's Brazil)
-a large Cathedral-like structure (using the Pegasus Gothic Building set)
-maybe a Hab-block (again inspired by Brazil and Blade Runner)
-and, lastly, a tavern/pub/drinking hole (unfortunately, I have no good inspiration pics for this - care to help a brother out? Post a few pics to inspire me here...)

Stay tuned!

Awesome job with the Necromunda scenery Ancientsociety! Simply stunning.

I've got a few questions about the materials you used. Where did you get the diamond plate plasticard from?

What is the stuff you are using for walkways (the ones that have the square holes in them - like on the Generatorium, Refinery Tower and the Water Sill)?

Where did you get the stairs from? (as seen on the Redemptionist Chapel, Forge and the Refiney Tower)

Where did you get the ladder from/how did you make the ladder? (as seen on the Redemptionist Chapel and the Generatorium).

Where did you get the corrugated material that you used on the roof of the Redemptionist Chapel?

Thanks,

Within roughly 9 days, I was able to paint up 10 Warbikers, 1 Trukk, & 10 Lootas for the GD Chicago 08 Combat Patrol Tournament - not to anything special, but TT standard.

Unfortunately, out of 20 available slots, only 6 people played the AM Tournie. It was a blast though I came in second to last. Even though I had more than enough Dakka to take care of some Ummies in the first game, I scored no Victory Points. In my second game, I was soundly beaten by another players CP of a Harlie squad and Ranger squad. In the final game, I also had more than enough Dakka to take care of more Ummies, but I failed to destroy the Daemon...

Even tough it teleported RIGHT NEXT to my Deff Dread and Boyz squad, my opponent was able to kill it with a well-placed Plasma gun shot. :'(

But, I did get a sweet little consolation prize of Chaplain Grimaldus (hurray, more servitors!)

In between rounds I was able to get some (rather bad) shots of the new Black Reach sprues. They are REALLY nice! Detailed, well moulded, and everything is properly proportioned (yes, the new Nobz are a bit smaller than the metal ones, but are very characterful).

Sweet! Thanks again. For the record I am most interested in seeing you finish of some more Necromunda terrain, the Eschers and then some Gorkamorka terrain (in that order).

I look forward to whatever you decide to do.

If so how did you make the sword on "Kama" (Da NinjOrk) and the Kult Of Speed Racin Tower?

The both look fantastic!

Awesome work. Are they all custom plasticard jobs?

Yes, mostly.

If so how did you make the sword on "Kama" (Da NinjOrk) and the Kult Of Speed Racin Tower?

"BusterSword" Katana How-to:
-using .40 plasticard, cut out a rectangular shape
-cut the top of the sword on a slight angle
-using either sandpaper or by scoring backwards with an xacto blade, smooth out all the blade edges
-to make a sawtooth on the reverse edge, simply cut tiny triangles from the edge of the blade
-take an Ork arm holding any CC weapon, cut the weapon off at the fist, and glue a small plasticard square at the top of the fist (this is the handguard)
-glue the blade to the handguard and reinforce with plasticard strips

My Dalek-inspired LED Mek Stompa's finally complete...I may re-do the head in the future to be more Dalek-like (basing it off the actual GW model's head), but would only do so if I work on another Stompa that I could transfer the current head too. This Stompa is about 70% scratchbuilt and 20% GW, with the remainder being comprised of a Tamiya KV2 tank kit.

Will the cherry blossoms or other branches be on other units in the force?

Probably....

It will most likely return on the Corsair (Dire Avenger proxies) Wave Serpent, but with a larger color pallete (more pinks, deeper reds, and shades of grey).

Had this Hasslefree mini in my bitz box for months now and just now got around to assembling and painting him. This is probably the nicest 28mm historical mini I've ever done, great detail.

He's based on a wooden shape, floored with scale lumber to represent a ship's decking. I painted him as an American Privateer during the Revolutionary War (and, yeah, he stole a Red Coat!).

Here's a shot of him with two other Em4 P-A Survivors I did just last year (http://empireofghosts.blogspot.com/2010/03/post-apocalyptic-survivors.html), so you can see how my painting has evolved in only about 14 months.
