View Full Version : Needle Rifle. A waste of creds?

After a short discussion about sniping with Heavy Bolters on The Underhive Forum (See sig), I have come to the conclusion that Needle Rifles are pretty darn pointless. Has anybody ever used one they have paid for? Or do you just use "Invented" ones?

230+ creds for a weapon that has a decent range and always wounds seems ok at first. Until you factor in the difficulty of finding one. And that a Heavy Bolter is only 180 creds. Longer range, more damage, option for sustained fire if required. OK, it has to roll to wound. But S5 is pretty likely to do it. It requires a skill to move and fire it but that isn't an issue for a sniper. It's not silent but that isn't a problem as long as you wait for a good shot before firing. The only real downside is that it can only be used by a Heavy, not a Leader or "Specialist" Ganger like the Needle Rifle.

Anybody got any thoughts?

personally i find it appalling to snipe with the "heavy" weapons anything with sustained fire dice should be using them.

besides i like the idea of a Needle Sniper Rifle alot. but you are right that it is seriously overpriced and much too rare to find to boot.

Well it automatically wounds, so that means every time you hit, there's 5xp gratis. However as with most rare items i'm going to have to say no, it's really not worth its cost if you look at it purely from an efficiency point of view, but rare items aren't about efficiency; they're about prestige, the awe and intimidation factor. Sure you could just buy 3 more gangers with lasguns but necromunda (while it allows for it) wasn't designed to support an environment where people try to create their own personal armies. You're supposed to go nuts and buy these ridiculous weapons for your guys, treating them as individuals (get too many and you lose track of them).

I've done the efficiency thing before. My last gang just worked out that way. A horde of Gangers with Autoguns, Shotguns and Lasguns. I couldn't get the creds in to buy "ridiculous prestige weapons" because I had so many gang members.

My next gang will try to stick close to 9 members. I'm trying out a Heavy Bolter rather than Stubber for a change. I was thinking about making a second Heavy Bolter guy for the gang when I can afford to buy one. Needle Rifles would take longer to afford and aren't that likely to be offered.

I think they are way overpriced. Aside from prestige and the auto-wound, a HB is better on all fronts. Hell, if you want a monster weapon and have cash to waste, get an Autocannon and snipe with that! Besides, I would rather spend all that cash on other rare items that are more useful. OIAM weapons are all-round a better buy than a Needle weapon and are/can be just as prestigious (a OIAM HS is pretty much the same price as a Needle rifle for example!).

Also I don't see anything wrong with firing SF weapons once instead of letting rip; most Necromundans are not Orks! Besides, I don't see it as being literally a single bullet fired, but rather a very short burst of three or four that has the effect of only "firing one shot". I see SF as the gunner holding down the trigger and liberally spraying the whole area; wasteful and not always a good idea.

Being a scavvy player who at this moment is a bit drunk (I say a bit I mean very drunk). I wouldn't realy know.

But being a hater of snipers I'd say no. If I had a regular gang I'd rather go for more lasguns.

But being a scavvy player the closest thing I've got to a sniper weapon is a spear gun, which is a far more entertaining weapon. Goliath kabab anyone?

Actually (a bit off topic sorry) back in the day (ie a few years ago when I was still at school, as opposed to now where I'm soon to graduate from uni) i managed to make a 5 orlock kebab (one was a heavy and another one was a meltagun toting leader), whiched nailed them all to a bulk head.

sorry for boasting

Funniest death I saw was a Goliath Heavy who was shot and put "Down" on the edge of a building. He fell off but his Clip Harness stopped him falling. A couple of turns later his recovery roll took him OOA. We thought he'd probably got his harness tangled round his neck or something. :D

i played a game way back which was like a raid on an armoury of some sort, it might have been a White Dwarf scenario, anyway, my opponent fluked up a one in a million sniper rifle from on of the crates. [yes i was watching the dice rolls!] it was actually a really gittish weapon when it was in use. The guys gang leader had it, and he really started to rack up experience points. [pity you dont get so many advances at that point] I seem to remember the guy running around picking off my guys from way outside my range to return fire. Yup, he was a swine alright

That scenario was "The Heist". Great one that, really enjoyed playing it.
