Ok, as this is my first Major terrain build I decided to start with a simple small house using card and balsa wood. It so far has taken me one night. I am using the design found on the GW website, I started by taking some strong cardboard and cutting out the basic pieces then i used "gaffa" tape to hold it while the glue dried. The balsa wood was cut with a stanley knife and attached with PVA glue. Today I will be searching for an empty cereal box to do the roof tiles. I intend to make the town snow themed so if anyone has any ideas for snowy roofs let me know :)

Erm.. I think thats it. Nothing very exciting here.

16-06-2007, 12:33
Here are the pics so far. The Bray-Shamen pictured seems very happy with it :D

16-06-2007, 12:35
Cool! I'll be watching this with great interest as I will shortly be making some buildings in this style for my terrain selection...

This should be good! :)

17-06-2007, 00:11
Thankyou Firestorm40k

I worked on the roof today, luckily my girlfriend came back from reading last night and was quite happy to spend the evening cutting "tiles" 15mm squares of cereal packet cardboard was used. With PVA to keep them in place.

Piccys :

17-06-2007, 01:00
The time and effort you are putting into the roof is making a huge difference, looks real good!!

Bugbait out.

17-06-2007, 16:02
ok final update today as im off to watch the Indianapolis GP !!

I created a wooden strip door from cardboard which i will create a handle for later. I coated the cardboard walls with a 1/4 PVA glue water mix and sprinkled light sand which has created an "olde" effect on the walls. I've finished undercoating the walls and tiles in black. The tiles i hope to paint a slate grey. Im undecided about the walls yet ?

Thanks you Bugbait ;)

Any C&C is welcome

17-06-2007, 16:20
Whoah ! It's coming along very nicely ! Consider me subscribed :)

18-06-2007, 06:20
I always thought that shingles where made of a hard wood and should be a dark brown to reflect that, if yours are clay then they could be any colour.
I guess traditional walls would be a cream or dirty white colour, if you are making a small village then you could do a mixture.
The clostest I got to making somehting like this was from here -> Wizards of the Coast (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fpm/archive) I made a few of the smaller buildings that are no longer a free download, if I add extra wood detailing they would probably look a bit better, maybe one day.

Bugbait out.

21-06-2007, 15:02
Ok well ive been trying to post an update for awhile BUT whenever i try to access Warseer from home i get "Server is too Busy" ?? Perhaps that is something to do with the time im accessing ? Anyway im at work and it access's fine. So here we go..

I have given the wood a base coat of dark brown acrylic, this i hope to build on with more browns and ink washes maybe some "ronseal" wood stain ?? i want to keep the wood grain thats on the balsa wood visable so i dont have to draw too much back on it !

The House concrete? stuff has been undercoated a manky yellow (sry no photo) and then painted over with a cream. I chose to do this so the corners, edges and overhang have an aged look where the occupants couldn't be bothered to paint. It looks ok, but seemed alot better in my head ?

It was a bit of a scrappy affair but very enjoyable ! Im very excited about painting the roof tiles !!! :chrome:

C&C Welcome :)

21-06-2007, 17:05
The building looks superb, and I hope you don't mind when I shamelessly 'yoink' your design when I make some Fantasy/Medieval buildings/ruins in 2-3 weeks time... :p :D

I'll credit you, of course! ;)

Keep up your good work, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

21-06-2007, 17:29
The building looks superb, and I hope you don't mind when I shamelessly 'yoink' your design

Dont mind at all !? ;)

please post me some pics of it when your finished :)

21-06-2007, 17:45
It is looking really nice. The roof is particularly good, effort paid off.

Have you thought about using foamboard for the walls instead of cardboard? It could help any potential warpage you may get and make a finished building stronger though you don't seem to of had any problem with this building.

21-06-2007, 20:08
The only warping happened during construction. My measurements were not exact maybe :)

As for foamboard im interested in having a go ! Its like polystyrene right ?

Im planning my next projects in cardboard, beacause i get tonnes of it FREE at work, but perhaps i should be getting some foamboard for...... experimentation.... (Mad Professor Laugh)

Foamboard is a sheet of polystyrene sandwiched between two thin sheets of card. Stong, light and easily workable. Glue with PVA and can be painted with acrylics etc. If you want to see what Foamboard is like and what it looks like have a look in my Terrain log (see sig for link).

You can get foamboard from Staples (next to Blockbuster video). About nine quid for about five sheets of A3. Should be enough for whatever evil and mad experiments you have planned

If you need more it is best to buy it in bulk as it is a lot cheaper plus the sheets are bigger so you don't have to stuggle if you want walls bigger than A3. I've got the link somewhere for when I bought my Foamboard - 45 quid for alot of foamboard, enough for bunkers, city fight terrain and loads left over.

25-06-2007, 16:54
Heres a little update.

I attacked the roof over the weekend with a shed load of Gray. I enjoyed the base coat however the highlighting was a pain so some of it looks a little scrappy :(

Im pleased with the overall look and im planning the base, thinking of having a trampled fence around the garden and some steppy stones to an outdoor privvy. because i wanted it to be a bit more interactive.

Work is also going ahead with some new terrain ideas il post up some piccies as they progress. But i was inspired while my GF was playing TES IV Oblivion, i got her to take some screenshots for me to study, kinda ancient ruin type affair.

C&C welcome

Rogue Trader
25-06-2007, 23:14
the house is cool, if your looking for inspiration tes iv has some fantastic terrain, the villages are especially good and worth replicating into your project ;)

02-07-2007, 16:52
Ok so last weekend was a busy one as i was performing at the workhouse festival in wales. But i did manage to get the base cut for my house and i also liberated a small toy pig from a childrens farmyard set. No pictures to show as of yet im afraid. Im hoping to get the privvy done soon. Next on the list is cheap flock for the garden.

Also i bought the paint mix for a jade colour, so i shall be experimenting with some statues this week.

Thanks for the compliment Rogue, i intend to put the oblivion ideas on the back burner till im a little more practiced at Terrain building !! :)

02-07-2007, 22:58
I seem to of missed the last update. The roof looks very nicely done. Looking forward to seeing the privvy and garden.

03-07-2007, 01:13
Looks pretty good.
hope ur ruins work out this well.

06-07-2007, 22:35
Ok, So im still searching for cheap flock/grass stuff or alternative.

Meanwhile tho, i have had a go at the privvy. Its a wood affair with a squeeky door. So far ive made the base design from stiff cardboard and then used cereal box to make wood slats. I hope to use the paintjob as a way of making them look more wooden. Same method as house with gaffa and glue. oh you may be wondering why the slats are numbered ? Simple answer is im an idiot and during my first attempt i became a few slats short ! :D Piccies :

I have also been experimenting with a statue however the jade green still needs alot of work, i hope to post i pic of it looking nice this weekend.

I have also started my second big project, this will be a building mid-construction with three archways cut into the base and a roof barely covered. This should make for a totally interactive building ! yay

11-07-2007, 23:04
Ok heres an update on my second building, a model order arrived this week SO im trying not to neglect my terrain too much.. So here is my "interactive" archway building that is based on the mordheim ruins featured here : http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page192.html

So far i have made the archways from thick cardboard and wrapped it around a piece of balsa to strengthen then shape. At the moment im working on the floor boards which are done similliarly to the privvy posted above. I can post more details if anyone has questions about this.

Enjoy the pics

C&C appreciated

EDIT: second page goodness :)

12-07-2007, 01:00
Looks interesting, is there a plan to have it joining another building? Are you using corrigated cardboard for the walls? I would be a bit worried about strength, maybe some on that balsa could be used internally on the walls or at least in the four corners.

Bugbait out.

12-07-2007, 12:59
Thanks Bugbait, Yes its corrugated cardboard for the walls which is quite strong. I think your right about extra balsa, although the corners are quite strong perhaps pillers in the archways would tackle any stability issues. As for attaching it to another building im undecided. I wanted it to be accesible from both sides, like a good sniper spot that isn't a death trap. Perhaps i could attach it to a construction site, maybe a 3 tier scaffolding affair ? That would be a perfect perch for range attacks and then have the run of this building to escape while having range(y) goodness.

Any Thoughts ?

17-07-2007, 22:53

Just a little update, I have built the broken walls although im still adding the wooden decals the floor boards are black and im confident about the roof scaffolds. Most importantly i got some cobblestones for the towns base AND IT WAS FREE ! Textured wall paper at B&Q just grab a few meters (more if you have balls of steel) and tell them your taking it as a tester. Ok so this may not seem amazing to you folks but its my first time decorating and i couldn't believe it when my GF told me i could take it and i was gonna shell out 10 for 15m squared. She got a little worried thinking i was gonna paper the lounge with textured wallpaper !! :D

Anyway im gonna post some pics once iv slapped some tester colours on it.

18-07-2007, 01:48
This guy has used textured wallpaper to do this -> Warmachine table (http://forums.privateerpress.com/index.php?showtopic=97492) I like the free sample idea!!

Bugbait out

18-07-2007, 13:00
@ Steam Giant, you sir have a talent there for buildings, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your work!

18-07-2007, 18:25
Bugbait, a thousand thankyous for a fantastic link !! I was struggling to decide where to take this project but that board has really inspired me !!

Hastings thanks, i hope to be able to show you more of my work, ;) grats on your recent "Tale of Fantasy Painters" offering.

Ok so just a quick piccy of one of the roof braces. Its balsa wood strips, i hope more explaination is not necessary. :eyebrows: Just needs tiling now... Now im gonna do some test painting on the textured wallpaper, so stand by for a second update 2nite?

C&C is always appreciated.

18-07-2007, 21:40
Ok second update tonite, I have painted up the wallpaper but am not happy with it yet. i think some lighter dry brushes and perhaps some sand/mud/grass to add character.

Also thought i would post a pic of the roof brace in position, its just held together with blue-tac til i make the other one and match a nice angle.

So you've taken the time to read my log... why not make a comment ?

Wolf Scout Ewan
18-07-2007, 23:28
Hrmmmmm. I wouldnt like to use wallpaper as after a few plays it will get beaten up and look crap. IMHO that is.

19-07-2007, 06:09
Steam-Giant - love the roofing! Excellent work so far. :)

@ Ewan: I can see your point - put perhaps if it's properly treated (perhaps give it a spray of something or layer of PVA) before painting, it'd be tougher... Just a thought!

19-07-2007, 07:09
Liking the roofing woodwork, make sure you dont cover them all up with tiles as it looks good already.

Any chance of posing a mini next to your building for your next pics, I didnt realise how big the last peice was until I saw your hand!

I recon pva painted over the wallpaper should work, only one way to find out!!

Hope these give you a better idea of scale ?

Ok so these are prolly the last piccies till sometime next weekend after i move house !! YAY !! my own space to play and do housework naked and throw my clothes on the floor and leave my paints and sharp objects all over the place, and stay up all night watching bad movies and leave the washing up till it congeals and neighbours to annoy and horrible cooking experiments and stack up my dirty washing till it entices me into philosophical debates on its own existance and.. and... and... ...
No Money :cries: !!

Wolf Scout Ewan
20-07-2007, 18:03
Yes PVA would work. But not 100% convinced:D

31-07-2007, 21:12
Ok the move is almost finished ( Just living in an obstacle course at the moment). Heres just a quick update. I have finished off the second roof brace, glued them together and slapped a coat of paint on it. I also found some spray cans of "Touch stone" in local DIY shop. I have used "Santa Fe" on the bottom part of the building and im confident it will work out good.

On with the pics :)

31-07-2007, 21:37
That stone affect looks good (nice and simple too). I've used them before, they drybrush pretty well.

Ozymandias, King of Kings

31-07-2007, 21:40
When you've finished with all the buildings, can I steal them? Please?

Great job and I look forward to seeing more.

01-08-2007, 09:52
Thx Ozymandiass, i hadn't thought about dry brushing yet ? but your right it was so simple to use, i masking taped off the wood areas and sprayed a generous amount on, unfortunatley i got a little carried away when taking pictures and left some fingerprint damage on one side :(

Thank you too Khrangar, although flying half way round the world to steal my buildings would be a great adventure ! why not have a go at building one yourself ? I hope i have left enough pictures and stuff for anyone to be able to copy what i have done.

Im really pleased with the way this building is turning out. Im using the other touch stone paint to make small stone tiles to outline the building corners and the arches. Also the roof braces still need some work to look more like ancient timber.

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

C&C is good for the soul !! Go on give it a try !

01-08-2007, 21:26
Houses are lookin good,
Can't wait to see them finished.

11-08-2007, 23:58
Almost 10 days without an update !? Well heres a progress report since ive had a lazy saturady to play. The wooden bits have had the once over with some brown acrylic and the outer walls have had the sand treatment as per last building also the inner walls have been painted black, which i may leave or colour ? Also i have added some tiles to the roof, i didn't want to do too many but i hope i have done enough ? Your C&C would be appreciated..

Heres the pics:

12-08-2007, 00:01
I rather like that! Good work!

14-08-2007, 20:33
Thx Ewan.

Little update:
I used the other "stone touch" textured spray paint on strips of cardboard, then sliced them up to make the stone effect around the archways.

Enjoy the pics..

14-08-2007, 21:08
I gotta get me some of that stone touch paint.

14-08-2007, 21:34
I gotta get me some of that stone touch paint.

Yup there very usefull, and well worth the price. ;)

11-02-2008, 20:34
Kk so i have let this thread and the last piece gather dust in neglect, i guess going for such a huge project grinded me down before i could finish. Im starting to make more terrain tho since i got some new tools over the holidays and hopefully i may even gear up to finishing that ****'in building !

What im working on now then :

Its an execution site nicknamed "Golgorand" plenty of blood needed around the drain and the "chopping block" the wood needs some more work, the rope knots around the doweling hasn't had a base coat yet and the cobble stones need highlighting. After that il glue it all together (its blue-tac'd at the mo :) )

C&C welcome

11-02-2008, 20:48
Nice piece ..Can't say I have ever seen one modeled before. :D

19-02-2008, 14:25
Nice piece ..Can't say I have ever seen one modeled before. :D

Thx, im thinkin of redoing the cobble stones as they have dry brushed terribly !

The pic below i have taken from terragenesis, I want to know what that spikey quatre circle thing is ? I think iv seen one at a local museum but am none the wiser, any history buffs care to enlighten me ?

19-02-2008, 14:41
could you give me a link to Terragenesis (photobucked is blocked at work) :(
maybe i know what is is or at least find out...

19-02-2008, 14:57
Its linked off a post on www.terragenesis.co.uk too, So not much help there !

Ive done a little paint doodle hope that helps ?

19-02-2008, 18:32
Is this a modern version of what you are talking about?
I still can't figure out what they are called....

Commander Zhypher
19-02-2008, 19:14
Fence? or probably a fancy french name for it? :)

the one in the picture from terragenesis is probably to prevent ppl to get to the boats

Not sure about the one on that picture,.. mabye to prevent ppl from going from one side to the other, wich is acctualy what a fence does :D

EDIT: hmmm or it could be purly ornamental, in that case my Wiki'fu tells me it is called "Decorative fencing"

19-02-2008, 20:39
ahhh now i can see the picture... yea I found the modern version it was somewhere in Washington DC on the side of a parking garage or something.

hey I found some more
still I can't figure out what they are called.
but apparently they are popular in Cuba.

21-02-2008, 20:41
The more i see them the more i think they are just un-ordinary fences :(

Stil perhaps there is a darker use for them in the world of fantasy ?

Thanks for the photos N810 ! :)

TERRAIN NEWS : I made an important discovery last night ! the stone touch paint covers polysterene beautifully with out a hint of melt or warp-age ! woo. So i cut a few squares and sorted the gaps of my arches.

C&C welcome.

02-03-2008, 15:16
Okay, i completed my first board today ! Seems alot of winter themed boards on the forum so i thought i would jump on the bandwagon !

I used 3 pieces of 4' by 2' so the total size is 6' by 4' ( good maths eh)

I have added wood to the bottom and drilled through them, so i can use wooden dowling to keep the sections together. Then i sprayed the buggers with "Soap Stone" spray paint. (I swear i don't work for them, im not the 'Barry Scott' of Plasticote !! :D) It took 5 cans of paint which cost over 30 and now needs 6 hours to dry before i can seal/varnish it. Although im not sure how im gonna do that yet  Ideas would be appreciated !

Okay so here are the pictures :

Expect some snow themed terrain here soon

C&C welcome.

02-03-2008, 23:23
Very nice texture :)
you frames look sturdy and
the pegs area good idea :D

06-03-2008, 18:44
Thanks N810 im really pleased with it so far, I gave it few coats of sealer and its now rather tough ! :chrome: Ive added links to my first thread post, hopefully this will be of some use to first time visitors to my thread and also for navigation as it grows.

06-03-2008, 23:24
Wow, everything looks great. Nice job.

08-03-2008, 17:55
Thx Nyys, Im on holiday for a week now so will be finishing off some projects and starting some new ones soon. Including some great Necro stuff thats already well on its way !! :chrome: Some of you astute warseers may have noticed the thread being re-named this is so i can accomodate all my Terrain into one thread rather than using multiples

Hope your enjoying reading as much as i am building.

12-03-2008, 17:13
Ok this is an Ice-world Crater, which i made for my snow board which is the begining of a shed load of terrain im making for the Typha -IV campaign i will be running in the summer. Ive used an apocolypse moonscape base added rubble and sand (Gritty Kitty litter) and after undercaoting black i have painted grey highlights and then rained bicarbonate of soda all over it to produce the snow.
At first i tried water-pva mix to glue the bicarbonate of soda on, but this produced a wet snow(ice) result i wasn't happy with. I then tried sprinkling the snow and then spraying it with sealer, but this gave off such a smell that it made me light-headed and I was forced to leave it over night in the shed !! It seems to be relativly ok now but i shall put some more thought into this as i make more.

Heres the pictures on its own and with a few of my Imperial AI group.

12-03-2008, 20:50
Looks good steam giant,
perhaps for the next one
dry brush it with a slightly
lighter color before you apply
the snow. :D

12-03-2008, 23:36
dry brush it with a slightly
lighter color before you apply
the snow.

I think your right, is brown the way forward ? or should i stick to black & greys ? I want it to be a deadly frozen Artic rather than a winter wonderland.

13-03-2008, 13:16
hmmm probaly a little brown here and a little grey there.
but keep the first layer over the black prety dark
then hit it with a more medium shade of grey...
then snow, well thats what I would do anyway. :D

25-04-2008, 20:13
Its about time i started something, here it is : Its the begining of a factory. Separating and cleaning the corrugated cardboard was the most time consuming bit. I Need to finish the roof and add details to the walls like side edging and a big door.

25-04-2008, 23:54
Great thread. I love the use of the textured spraypaint. I use it alot myself in my terrain pieces for buildings as well as the ground around it.

Keep going man, I want to see how you finish that warhouse/factory.

26-04-2008, 16:08
Thanks Shonuff :) That textured paint sure is good stuff !

Here is the finished Factory build. I intend to paint the corrugated bottom half a rusty red/brown then have navy blue walls and roof.

I hope the pictures go some way into explaining how it came together. If anyone wants any step explained just say... :)

Im also gonna make some modified containers from the PDF this spanish guy created check them out here (http://www.toposolitario.com/workshop/container_recortable.html), his site is full of good stuff !!

26-04-2008, 18:59
looking good steamgiant...
good luck steaming all that cardboard apart. :)

Wolf Scout Ewan
26-04-2008, 22:51
I really like that factory building!

29-04-2008, 10:50
Nice work. I like it. Iwant to see it colored and painted.
(put some minis in the pic with the bulding so I can see the size of it.)

29-04-2008, 21:38
Ok so i airbrushed a layer of silver then tried masking taping off some areas for the top paint layer. However they didn't survive and were blown all over the show ! :(

Sorry Shonuff, I forgot to photo a mini for scale. Will sort it for next update. ;)

01-05-2008, 22:03
Piccy Update :

A couple of Goliaths check out the Factory

And my UNA sergeant gets an Urban camo make over :)

02-05-2008, 13:45
I sure do like the look of that house!! Very nice! It really LOOKS demolished, with some roof tiles still stuck on the roof! Marvellous!

03-05-2008, 02:00
looking good, like your choice of color. :)

19-05-2009, 09:26
She who must be obeyed: "You dont want this old thing ?"

Steam: "yeah !"

She who must be obeyed: "when are you ever gonna use it again ?"

Steam: "I use it all it all the time !"

Ok so its been awhile, apologises, but ive been waiting for something special to kick start my terrain thread again, and while wondering through "the Range" a cheapo department store i wandered into the toy aisle and made a discovery, im sure most have you have skipped to the pictures by now..so... taadaa !
Yep for 99p each i picked up two dinosaur skelletons, the triceratops is about 12" long and ive also bought a t-rex. Im having so much fun i think im going to have to buy the others (mammoth, pteradactyle, raptor, stegasaurus) I was trying to find them online but no luck so far. Anyway thats more than enough waffle, look at the pictures ive got loads more sand to glue on, and i think im gonna break open one side of the rib cage, where scavengers might have broken in for lunch.

C&C always welcome

Uncle Mel
19-05-2009, 12:33
That would make some awesome dessert terrain!

19-05-2009, 13:38

Actualy I have been looking for something like that for quite a while... :D

Wolf Scout Ewan
19-05-2009, 21:13
Ooooh thats good.

20-05-2009, 11:23
Great idea Steam Giant.
Do you remember the toy maker's name?

20-05-2009, 20:17
They are made by Kandytoys, although ive checked their website, they dont seem to have this exact product but a few look similar.

Thanks for the comments folks ive added another layer of sand and greenstuffed the gaps in the skeleton. pics soon

25-05-2009, 00:04

Scroll down a bit, they are priced at 1.50 each.

Now I want to do a couple as well. Combined with some Aquarium trees and rocks, it should look really nice.

25-05-2009, 16:28
I think they are actually the ones underneath at 2.50 ;)

25-05-2009, 17:13
Man oh man I love those dino skeletons... I found a bunch of them on a discount toy rack at a gas station one day for $4.99 each. You can Google for "wooden dinosaur skeleton" and find a ton of them, lots of museums and science-themed stores carry them as well.

The desert theme is a good one, always gives me images of the Tusken Raiders from Star Wars. Be neat to see one of these large dino skellies turned into a commune-type outpost. Great thread, and looking forward to more!

28-05-2009, 16:09
Hmmm the dinosaur skeleton idea was given to me for my table and it really would work well... Wonder if I can find any of this in Australia, mate!
Great work so far, the work on the factory is sweet.
