View Full Version : A Tale of X Gamers [Blood Bowl]

After my suggestion of the idea, there was quite a lot of interest in a To4G for creating a Blood Bowl team. In addition to myself the possible participants so far are:Lardidar
Arkzein? (depending on his schedule)
Though it is not too late to join in if you want to!

The rules
The suggested budget is 25 for July and 15 for August (spent in any manner you see fit), and the deadline is September 1st, but we're not writing a WD article here, so you're free to overspend or miss deadlines if you want to.

The Blood Bowl team you end up with must satisfy starting team requirements in accordance with the Living Rulebook 5.0 (http://www.specialist-games.com/bloodbowl/rulebook.asp), any leftover cash can be spent on extra players or models to represent coaches/cheerleaders etc.

That's all I can think of for now, I hope to see lots of coolness over the next two months! :D

Yorkiebar's budget for July:
Allowance: 25
Purchases: Naggaroth Nightmares (3rd ed 14-man Dark Elf team) - 19.01
Total: 19.01
Remainder for August: 5.99

I've just paid for the Nightmares on eBay, currently waiting for them to be posted so no pics yet :(.

Talon FC

Starting Lineup:

1 Elin Lineman
2 Ixion Lineman
3 Astraea Lineman
4 Cepheus Lineman
5 Aurora Lineman
6 Elysium Lineman
7 Actaeon Lineman
8 Hector Lineman
9 Anteres Lineman
10 Ithril Lineman
16 Athena Lion Warrior

Apothicary, ff6, rerollsx2

The idea here is to use a fantasy archer box set combined with other HE bits to create the players. Obviously the first step will be to create the 10 linemen as they are the core of the team. After that I will be adding two blitzers and the other three catchers. Throwers will come last as I find them useless, especially now under lrb 5.0 as they cost an additional 10k for a skill you may never use. The coaching staff will be done in between 2-3 players as they will be metal models and more interesting. Right now i'm thinking of using a HE Lord for my coach and a mage for a wizard. As to what i'm going to use for an apothecary we shall see.

As of right now I've spent 18.00 pounds for the archer set. Will porbably pick up my staff shortly. On to the pictures!

..and a nearly completed Lineman. Number 1 Elin. The face didn't come out great, and the white is a little choppy.. but it will give me something to work on as I progress through my team.

I am still up for this.

I will be doing a Chaos team.

My first 25 has bought me not only the Chaos team (8 Beastmen and three Chaos warriors) but also the mutant beastmen (with tenticles and extra arms) and the chaos warrior mutant (with claws and foul appearance).

However, I may not be including the mutant warrior with claws and foul appearance in my starting line up. (I think I shall be saving him for one of my star players).

Instead I shall be using another, slightly converted, Chaos warrior from my bits box to make my starting line up of 4 Chaos warriors and 9 chaos beastmen.

(Even if I had needed to buy him I would have still come in under budget. You have got to love e-bay :D)

No pic's I'm affraid the team is currently submerged in 'the dip'.

My team for this will be the 'Hamburger Harriers' a halfling team.

So whats 25 and a scour of Ebay and trade sites get you these days? .... well ... this.

13 Halflings
2 Dryads (used as treemen so they fit on the pitch)
The mighty Puggy Baconbreath
3 Change

The picture is the team ready for stripping, I will be posting the stipping process step by step as it will be my first ever go at stripping :)

I hope to get the stripping done this weekend,

Until then,

Woo! My team has arrived. See attached image.

I am now the owner of 2 throwers, 2 blitzers, 2 witch elves, the Hubris Rakarth model and 7 linemen. The starting lineup I plan is as follows:

The WarSeers
#1 Xhalax Witch Elf
#2 Sylass Runner
#3 Yorkiebar Lineman
#4 Starlight Lineman
#5 tzeentchgiant Lineman
#6 x-esiv-4c Lineman
#7 Athamas Lineman
#8 Sigur Lineman
#9 McMullet Lineman
#10 Pertinax Lineman
#11 ArtificerArmour Lineman

2 Rerolls, 8 Fan Factor

I don't like starting without an apoth but I need those cheap rerolls.

are we allowed to use this to finish a team we've already started? if so I might get involved. Actually, I'll be done in under a month on mine, but I don't think it will be in budget realms. I've been given a commission to do of 31 models including a coach, all 2nd edition models from various races. The colour scheme/team background can be found at the bottom of this page

If everyone's ok with that then I'll post my pics as I go on in this thread!

Is there a cut off point for starting this? If not, I may be tempted to get my orc team off the ground again...

Part 1

I decided to start an Ogre team for this project as I've meant to do up a team for the last year. Ogres in my mind are a fun team, on paper they look tough as nails but methinks that this team is average at best, where scoring with the team will be an issue. Basically I will go for collecting 6 Ogres and 12 Snotlings (basic 16 players) and if money/time allows an assortment of coaches, apos and cheerleaders will boost the numbers. I might even add a star player, but this is as yet uncertain.

First purchase for the project was a box of 6 plastic bulls which I will convert into proper BB Ogres. Taking a look at them they look abit whimpish so I'll have to add some armour on them in the form of helmets and shoulder guards and possibly elbow and knee pads. I'm not too fond of the belly plates they come with and will probably get rid of the lot and sculpt some proper ogre six-packs instead and a trouser line. I'm not a 100% sure on how to go ahead in converting the players so I will probably alter my vision several times along the way. I'm no master at green stuffing so bear with me... Pics will come up as soon as I have started on all the lads. Also the team remains as yet nameless, but a few of the ogres have gotten names already.

6 Ogre Bulls -19.8 GBP
Rest: +5.2 GBP July
(+20.2 GBP Total)

Hey can I join up? I`ve got a halfmade orc team, gobbo team and a planned undead team as well. Might even do a DE team if I find the right models..

The whole budget stuff isn`t anything I need, I need a date set for getting my **** into enough gear to get it all done (not just halfway through...)..

PM me or post it here if I can join up :)

Btw, looking really forward on the developement of this thread! Looks promising already :D

Part 2

In this second part of "A Tale of X Gamers (Blood Bowl)" I will detail on the first conversion work I've done on my 6 Ogre Bulls purchased last week. As mentioned I wasn't too thrilled about the belly-plates they come with and decided to green stuff a belt and trousers for all of the Ogres. Here's what I did:

(1) Taking an Ogre I decided to carve a little on the edges of the great hole in the stomach area (2) and fill the trunk with junk (sprue clippings). I proceeded to GS the stomach and trousers over the dried, filled hole (3) and then flattened out a GS sausage to form a basic belt over the midsection. When this was dry I made the belt buckle and belt flaps (4). All in all it was quicker and easier than I first predicted and apart from drying times for glue and GS it all went pretty fast and presented no problems in sculpting. Although it must be said that my GS skills are not that good so bear with me :)

Having all the belts and stuff done I went on trim the shoes (I didn't particularly like the pointy toes on the shoes, yuch!), onto which I made a steel cap from GS.

In total it took less than 2 hours to finish the lot so I'm glad my gamble paid off. Yeah it would've been easier to go with the belly plates but I didn't much like them and decided to do them my own way. Wasn't quite sure about the time aspect but in the end not much time was lost. Here's where I am so far.

July +5.2 GBP
August +15 GBP
(+20.2 GBP Total)

OK second post following the one above. I'll post a pic on where I am so far (Warseer forums didn't allow me to add more than 3 pics):

Next I'll start on the arms and heads and finish up the shoulder guards. Hopefully it'll go as easily as the belly section conversion.

Great GS work on the ogres.

El Diablo, do join in. I can stand to see you paint a bloodbowl team. (And Orcs 'n'Goblins are next for me).

Here is the start I have made on my Chaos team.

(sorry about the pics. I will get closer up and without flash next time.
.... I didn't realise they were so bad until I got them up on the screen).

11-07-2007, 21:34
Dude Harry, those are nice! Reminds me to get back to work on mine.

12-07-2007, 09:18
@Harry: Thanks! Btw those beasts look excellent!

@Yorkiebar: Yorkie, I was looking through your team setup and as far as my experience goes in LRB5 having a high FF from start isn't as important as before. FF will at best give you +20K extra winnings, mostly 0-10K. If you start off with a lower FF it'll gradually go up after every match anyway... My recommendation is to switch the WE for a blitzer (same mobility, tougher and block), lower FF by 4 and buy yourself a RR. RR's are crucial for elves in the beginning, makes you able to dodge that much more.

12-07-2007, 12:49
this inspires me to finish the team i started last year and then forgot all about.

I used to have a great BB were team but lost it when i moved house. along with the rest of my BB minis.

I still have the rule books though and recently bought a mint copy of 2nd edition so i have the cool polysterene pitch (the minis in it suck a bit though).

I've painted a few of my team "Snottenham Snotspur"

the troll thrower on this next one need a lot more work as he's still in basic lotr colours but you get the idea...

16-07-2007, 19:31

Having trouble with taking pictures. Somehow I never get enough light and it always looks like crap. Also I'm having time issues as I have to paint about 500pts of CSM in 2 weeks (check out my other painting log in my sig). However I will not give up, and certainly after the tournament I will be devoted to my HE team.

Anyway here is #2 Ixion, a line elf.

yay , when my dad gets home ill get him to take pictures of a tree man i painted up over last week

26-07-2007, 14:57
Lookin good there th0r. :)

I'll have to post some pics of the chaos dwarf team I just started working on. Although I still need ideas on what to use for hobgoblins. It's as much a conversion project as me wanting a team, so I don't fancy just buying the old metal ones. My only idea so far is ungor, possibly with goblin heads.

28-07-2007, 07:53
Do you have a deadline in mind for the first posts?
I ask because I am a bit under pressure to finish stuff fo the Tale of Painters threads and could use a couple of extra days to complete this months painting for this project.

01-08-2007, 02:46
lol, in true gamer fashion we all need more time so we can work on other projects. I know myself, blood bowl has hit the back burner as I had to paint my 40k EC for a tournament (ended up getting best presentation too :) ) and now I'm redoing parts of the army to improve it for next time. Then theres the local painting contest which this month is LotR. Oh and that reminds me of one other...

04-08-2007, 12:20
Do you have a deadline in mind for the first posts?Since I am not even close to finishing mine, I'll have to say no :p

06-08-2007, 00:36
Wow, nice thread. Great to see some BloodBowl in here and they are all there...the Halflings (good luck with those ;) ), the Chaos All Stars and on top of all, ME! In a football team. How weird is that!? And it's Dark Elves even, the army I play in WHFB. Thanks for letting me join your team, Yorkie.;)

I also really like the Ogres. It's nice to see how versatile those guys are once you got rid of this bellyplate. Looking forward for some more updates, happy painting guys!

06-08-2007, 02:42
Awesome thread, some nice looking teams. BB is a great game, more people should endeavour to learn about it.

06-08-2007, 07:48
Nice touch.
Are you not supposed to be setting us an example to force us into painting activity?

I have arranged a game of Bloodbowl at 'Bristol Big Uns' club next sunday as an incentive to force me to finish painting my team. So I should have something to show you this week.

Is anyone on this thread anywhere near completing their first months painting? :D

07-08-2007, 03:07
hey great idea. I'll join in with my necromantic team, all the pieces should be coming in the mail anyday now. I'll get pics up once I receive them. Cheers.

With the release of the Chaos codex I feel forced to finish off my EC army... But I will still work on my HE's....

W00t, Blood Bowl! I honestly don't have enough time/money/drive to pick up another specialist game, but I will be definately following this log along. Great work from everyone (that's posted pics) so far, especially those ogres - really neat gs work :)

07-08-2007, 15:25
Good to see a lot of new people getting into Blood Bowl. What you might want to consider is checking out the Warseer Blood Bowl League. It uses a java client to play a free online version of Blood Bowl. Check it out:

I totally forgot about this!

Many apologies. In case you haven't guessed, i have to drop out due to my commitment on Harry's painting jobber.

Best of luck to everyone though! I'll be watching...

Part 3

Was a while ago I updated this log so here's the latest: Ogres are ready to paint and this is what I did!

Last time I finished the belly area and now it was time to do the rest: shoulderpads and extras. Well to start off I did some arm-repositioning on three of the ogres: One with arms resting on his hips, another with a throwing pose and a third was converted to make him look as if in midstride. All of this left som ugly areas on the models and lead to extensive remodelling of the back muscles and partly chest muscle (or man breasts as they seem to have!). I then proceeded to sculpt some shoulder guards for all ogres, basically just forming two flat areas on both shoulders.

All 6 Ogres ready for painting. Not too happy about the shoulder guards but they serve their purpose...

For one of the ogres I modelled some chainmail to make him look abit harder like a blitzer type. I added a helmet with face guard too just to emphasize how bad he is and also converted two left handed armoured mitts to make a left and right handed pair. This model was my first go at making chainmail and at first I was at a loss as to how to do it. But after trying for a while I came up with a suitable technique that looks pretty decent.

Some pics to show back muscle sculpting, chainmail and snot getting chucked by the bandana wearing Ogre!

Now that all the ogres are prepped for painting I'll have to decide on a colour scheme. I'm thinking of painting the pants white with blue stripes on and the armour blue (per GW 'eavy metal paintjob on the official models). I'm not usually one for imitating GWcolour schemes but in this case I thought the colours would suit the big guys. Also in the works are 10 the snotlings needed to fill up the squad. I decided to re-use 8 snotlings I had done 8+ years ago for BB and give them a new paintjob, only leaving 2 snots to be done from ground up. Pics on these in the next update!

01-09-2007, 16:14
I'm back from holiday! And while I was there (prepare to be shocked) I actually did some painting! I will have photos just as soon as I unpack, trawl through my e-mails etc.

I will also be putting much more effort in over the next week to try and be ready for the unofficial WarSeer social event at Warhammer World next weekend.

01-09-2007, 17:22
man you can really scupt, woahhh, nice team, i want to see that painted XD

22-09-2007, 09:13
Thanks man. I really don't see myself as a sculpter as I've really not done much of it. But learning as I go along and loving. Certainly gonna do more in the future :)

Gonna get them painted soon. Last month has been crazy with things to do so I haven't prioritized it :(
