Just a small update. I have a tournament coming up this weekend, and I used that as an excuse to add a little flavor I had been putting off.
My Commander has brought his Necromundian Greenback Spider along to the battle. I'll use it as a wound counter.

The legendary Necromundan 8th! You've certainly done them justice. The Stormtroopers are especially impressive.

I've done a little work on my DA recently. The front two dreadnaughts were awaiting the paintbrush, and I finally got to it. The only thing left to do is the grass on the bases and the sealant.

Wow, awesome stuff as usual. Looks like you will have a lot of fun with the new codex if the rumors/leaked ref sheet prove correct.

Here's my next project, a Penal Battallion squad to go with my Necromundians. You'll notice the explosive collars if you look closely.
I'm going to paint them up using a throwback scheme to the original penal legion models, that's why I'm using the catachans with vests.

I can't belive I haven't seen this log before. Great work, very well done. I rate it a 6 on a 5 scale. Keep up on the great work. can I STEAL ONE OF YOU FEMALE GAURD? :)

Thanks rcal13, I appreciate it. I've been starting to think that I should drop my logs off Warseer. I can barely seem to buy some feedback in either my Fantasy or 40k logs.
As for the female guard, they're cast at cost by a gaming club I belong to. Look up Dr. Thunder, and he should be able to point you in the right direction.

Why are their arms a different colour to their faces? Other then that they look fantastic to me mate.

Because they're in the snow. My entire army wears turtlenecks and gloves (or bodysuits in 40k terms). No real army runs around shirtless IMHO.

Kizzt, glad you like it. The helmet is from Pig Iron. They make a great series of heads for swaps. I've had them sitting in my bitz box for 6 months or so, but decided to get my test model and scheme sorted before the codex comes out.
Well, after all the broken promises, the shadowsword (armorcast variety) is finally underway. I'll try to get pics up tonight.

Glad you like them Sgt Harris. I understand GW's business reasons for not producing mixed guard units, however, all the fiction (Gaunts Ghosts, Cain, 13th Legion, even the Gunheads has female Vulture pilots) has mixed units, so it makes sense to me. It also breaks up the monotony of painting so many infantry units.

HAHA, although I don't think a titan would waste its time on a measly little penal squad, although it would be funny to see a warlord titan chasing a few guardsmen
Love all of the little details on the tank personel, especially the black and yellow eight on his shoulderpad and the facepaint. And I really do love the colours on him, I have to say that I preffer them to a lot of the standard "green and some cammo" themes out there, looks more real and a lot more "Dead 'ard guard".
The tank in itself is also good, and the snow and wheathering helped a lot... but there's still something, the surfaces seem a bit... bland when there isn't anything on them.

After receiving my OOP citifight book, I've reattempted the test model for the Cadian 122. I'm pretty happy now. Don't worry about the technique, this is a color and uniform test (although he might make it into my first squad.
I've changed the uniform blue and the camoflague to so it contrasts better, and is more faithful to the original. I added the helmet camo too, and the red left shoulder armor. Not sure if only special squads will have this, or all. Still deciding there, but since he's a Veteran, he gets it.

Well, I've had to take a short break from my Ghost project this week. I have a 1200pt tournament using the new codex on Friday, and I've got a Medusa and a Fleet advisor to add.
The Medusa is done except for the servitor loader. You can see he'll attach via some cables into his arm socket.

Thanks guys. Glad you like the DA. It's a pretty simple scheme, but I feel pretty effective too.
The Medusa is made from a bassie with the Forgeworld shield instead of the standard one, and a shortened barrel. I had a couple sitting around for just this purpose, i.e. converting to the new variations in the codex.

Bueller? Bueller?
Bueller? Bueller?
Could you translate that to me??
Canīt believe I missed this log...
I like the camoflage pattern of those 122nd Cadians. Could you make a tutorial for it? Iīm tempted to try that one out to for a guard army. Also leave the red shoulderpad as it is, looks good and gives a great contrast.
The idea for the fleet advisor is nice too, just dislike your medusa version, looks good but I prefer the wider barrel made by forgeworld looks better IMHO and differentiates basilisk and medusa from each better.
Though great idea with this servitor great idea in deed.
Use of snow is nice too, adds a lot of character to your models.
odmiller
02-05-2009, 00:18
Thanks for the feedback. I generally agree with your comment about the Forgeworld Medusa. I like it too, but I have to work with what I've got in the end.
I can explain the camo now, and when I return to that squad I can do a turtorial. My next project is a couple of Gaunt's Ghosts squads I'm detailing in another log, after that it's back to the 122nd.
The scheme is space wolves grey over black primer. Then, the blue wash from the GW set. The camo stripes are chaos black and skull white. It's really simple, but effective, designed for the mass production you need in a guard army.
"Bueller? Bueller?" is from an 80's movie caller Ferris Bueller's Day Off. His teacher stands in front of the class calling his name, and everyone just stares, no response. I thought it was appropriate for my thread, as I think I'd had one response out of my last 13 or 14 posts. Little bit of an inside joke.
I like to check this blog ... and ... I'm amazed how you always turn out cool stuff.
sj
I hate Bueller, he makes me want to retch stomach acid on that wretched little smirk of his :)
SO feedback- this log is awesome, the paintschemes for your IG in particular appear to be simple yet extremely effective. I have noted down your choice of paints for the future- the markings on helmets and shoulders really set these models off.
The use of gloos varnish on your Marines to make them 'pop' a little more is also excellent and I will remember this for when I do a few Marines myself (bronzed armour in my case)- the DA are also gorgeous and kudos to you on those.
The 122nd regt... wow, that test model is really something, the camo is different and cool and the finished piece made me think of the Helghast, Space Above and Beyond and all the random cartoon movies depicting sci fi carnage altogether!
Well done od, I would hate to see you pull your threads cos of too little critique ;)
P.S. How could I be the ONLY one to have noticed this on the Penal Squad- the explosive collars are COOL!!!!!

Wow, thanks guys. Yeah, Ferris Bueller seemed cool when I was a kid, now it's just annoying as hell.
Glad you IG schemes. I find it's important to find a balance between decent painting and assembly line with IG. Especially since I won't play with unpainted stuff.
I played in a tournie last night and the penal squad doesn't just look crazy and dangerous, they play that way too. What a cool unit.
Good eye noticing the gloss varnish on the DA. I was trying to get the effect of dark green shininess from my favorite 40k painting.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it's nice to know people are watching.

I was able to get the first steps complete.
1. Cleaned all the flash and trimmings off the already assembled model.
2. Sprayed on the base coats.

Next step, base paint the metallic areas.

Made progress on the second Valk. The weathering and washes are done.
Next it's highlighting the metallics.
Then lights and cockpit.
Then icons, markings, and canopy.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/valk2wip2.gif
As I mentioned, this one was already assembled and has no stand. So, no red light interior, no gunners, and no base. What I think I'll do is paint up a gunner standing on the ramp, shouting and pointing, like they've just unloaded or are loading.
odmiller
20-05-2009, 21:06
Here's the next step, with the highlighting done.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/valk2wip3.gif
Lights and cockpit next.
Then markings and canopy.
Then, I have to figure out how to handle the interior. I'll do that after the exterior is complete.

Thanks Death Korp. I'm quite hapy with the marine. I think the scheme looks right and is something I can carry through across an army.
The red view inside the Valkirye is a great idea! The result is excellent!

21-05-2009, 02:24
Thanks Cyroul. Glad you think it works.
On Valkyrie number two, I've built a crewman who'll be standing on the back ramp, telling everyone to load up. Which will explain why there's no flying base or red light. Pics later.

21-05-2009, 07:28
Here's some more progress. At this point, all I have left is the canopy and the interior.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/valk2wip4.gif
Nice Valks, an excellent steal on Valk number two aswell!
So is your Guard army pretty much done then? Or as done as any army is, I know you still have the 122nd Cadians lurking somewhere.
That's a nice Souldrinker, they will scrub up well under your painting skills. I too did some purple marines once... *shudders*
odmiller
21-05-2009, 14:19
Glad you like them. What do you mean by steal?
I don't think the army will ever be done. I have a Cadian 122nd theme I want to do, as well as 25 Ghosts I started documenting in another blog.
The only competition for the IG right now is the Soul Drinkers. I am trying to start up a Tale of x Gamers project locally, and doing another marine army would be the perfect project, especially as all the bitz have been languishing in my bitz box. So, after I finish this Valkyrie, I have to make the call on whether to tackle more IG or move to marines.
odmiller
21-05-2009, 19:36
I've completed the second Valk. Because of the lack of stan, gunners, and the fact it was assembled, I decided to assemble it as if it has landed to pick up passengers.

I am running a Tale of the x Gamers project at my local game store. For the 4 month project, I've decided to return to the Deathwing. We're only building for 1200 points, so my list is Belial, a Librarian, three squads and a dread in a drop pod.
Each month,June through September, we have to paint 300 points, and I'll catalog my adventures here.
So, first, here's a tray of the miniatures. I'll be converting the Black Reach miniatures with various bitz. Don't worry about the bad photo, this isn't really an important one, just to give you an idea of what's coming.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/armyplastics.gif
And here are the bases. I was inspired by VanSan's incredible blog, and spent a good 4 hours today building the bases to reflect the spacehulk the Deathwing are investigating.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/armybases.gif
I've just read through the whole log, and i must offer you my admiration! I shan't dig up things from aeons ago, but I must praise those gorgeous Valkyries - that red lighting is purely inspired, old boy. Keep up the excellent work!

Here's the next update. I added a little color to the bases, but still left them quite dark to contrast with the models once they're done. The green bases will be coated with a gloss varnish in the end so it looks like liquid.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/armybases2.gif
When I said steal I just meant that it was good to get a second Valk from someone else. Love all those bases you've churned out, very nice. Now all you need is to put some kind of scanner in a Terminator's hands ala Aliens movie! :P
If you do end up going for Souldrinkers it will a kind of break from churning out so many guard but seeing as you already have another thread on the go with those... ;)
Question: The plating on the bases, is that textured plasticard? Nice.

Got it. I agree, it was great to fall into a second Valk. I couldn't believe it.
The movement detector's not a bad idea actually. I'll think on it.
The Souldrinkers got put on the shelf for the time being, because I wanted to choose an army I would be sure to get done, as I am the leader of the project. Got to set a good example, and the Deathwing will allow me some extra time to work on guard stuff too.
It is textured plasticard. Good stuff.

I need your feedback in my bases. There are going to be a couple of remnants of previous marines in the hulk. Which chapter should it be?
Blood Angels?
Dark Angels?
What makes the most sense? I'm thinking Blood Angels because there's some symmetry with the old Space Hulk game having Deathwing investigate a hulk Blood Angels had been in centuries before. However, having old black Deathwing armor there would be cool too, as the follow on force tries to uncover what happened to their brothers the last time the hulk popped out of the warp.
I'd be tempted to go for Blood Angels, m'self, as their armour would be a nice spot of bright colour on the bases.
odmiller
26-05-2009, 02:40
That seems to be the consensus answer I'm getting.
Explodingboy
26-05-2009, 03:00
Blood Angels, the green armour of dark angels would clash with the dark green pools on the bases.
And like you mention yourself, Blood Angles used to dominate the fluff when it came to Hulk raiding.
tcraigen
26-05-2009, 07:45
Actually green is the complimentary colour of red so it will make the colours pop. Id say the green works. Plus Blood Angels Terminator force is an exciting image, not usually done.
odmiller
26-05-2009, 15:09
Thanks guys. Old Dark Angels' terminators would be black, not green, and although I was tempted, I think for design and nostalgia's sake we'll go with Blood Angels.

Your conversions and kitbashes are superb, and with your painting skills I suspect that this will be a Space Hulk/40K force to reckon with. 300 points a month is a good amount, by the way (although theoretically that's a full, if naked, 55 man Guard platoon :p).

Well, I'm doing a little research on Boarding torpedoes. I am converting my Dread's drop pod to look like a boarding torpedo. It'll have to have the same footprint as an open drop pod for gameplay, but for fluff, theme and coolness sake, I want a boarding torpedo instead. Any thoughts while I'm doing research?
Gen.Steiner
02-06-2009, 05:23
Boarding torpedoes smash their way through armour with a combination of directed meltas and kinetic energy (a sharp point) and then hinge open. Think a cone which folds open into an 'X' shape. This not only provides an egress point for the troops inside but locks the torpedo into the enemy vessel in the same way as barbs on an arrowhead.
Note also that Space Marine boarding torpedos don't seal the hole they make, creating a vacuum which they use to help clear the immediate area.
odmiller
02-06-2009, 16:18
Thanks General. That sounds like what I'm going to try and do.
I made some progress on my first test paint, but nothing really worth posting.
I want to knock out the test paint before going back to the torpedo.
Gen.Steiner
02-06-2009, 19:39
Just FYI - the boarding torpedo would best be modelled coming 'up' through the 'floor' of the Hulk: due to zero-G (or at least reduced G) and the haphazard (some would say insane) positioning of wrecks within the hulk, the floor that your Terminators and Dreadnought are on may well be at 90 degrees to the Space Marine vessel that launched the Torpedo. Or, even more likely, the Strike Cruiser was 'underneath' the Hulk and launching 'up' relative to the floor your Terminators are stood on.
Although, due to magnetic boots, they may actually be walking on a wall, or ceiling... ;)

Thanks for the kind words guys. The ladies on the Valks were fun to paint and give the planes a bit of character.
The bases were very easy to make, and frankly what inspired me to do these guys in the first place, a space hulk theme.
Looking jolly good, old boy!

Honestly Od i am blown away with how fantastic these are!!! especially in white, one of the hardest colours to paint. but you get the colouring so smooth and the shading spot on. and adding the little extra colour on the storm bolters/power fists, just makes it stand out all the more. simply divine!!!

Here's a run through of the basic painting:
I primed the whole thing black.
Then I used gray spray paint and sprayed the underneath.
Then I flipped it over and sprayed three diagonal stripes, going back with black spray as needed to make sure there was some differentiation.
Then I painted all the metal areas with chaos black.
Then I painted all the metal areas with chainmail.
Then I weathered the entire thing with chainmail on all the corners, edges, and rivets.
Then I used the ogryn flesh wash over the engine turbines and exhauts.
Then I used the badab black wash over the whole thing.
Then I highlighted all the metal areas with chainmail again.

would you mind giving me a run down on your white?? i've been staring at it for ages and still can't get all of it!!
do you even undercoat them in white??
odmiller
17-07-2009, 15:34
Sure, I base coat them in white, then use the GW badab black wash, then go back with thin even layers of white.
Unfortunately, I've had a family emergency arise talking me out of town over the weekend. I won't finish Belial now until next week.

Looking great as always. What do you use to make your bases, the sheet metal looks really good, very space hulk like.

I use some textured plasticard, some plasticard tubes, and then chopped up sprue and stuff from the bits box.

I got some work done on the display base. It will also kind of work as a basing tutorial I guess.
Step 1 - I Cut one side off some pieces of plastic packaging and built the layout of the "Space Hulk" section my terminators found themselves in. The board it's on is actually a frame I picked up on clearance, so once it's done, I'll put the frame around to make a nice finished display.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep1walls.gif
Step 2 - I added in sprue bits to build up a foundation for the flooring. I continually measured to make sure the termie bases could fit in the empty space, which will be painted as green glop.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep2fountation.gif
Step 3 - I added in pipes made from hollow plastic tubes of different sizes and round sprue. These will be painted and poke out of the floor as sub level piping.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep3pipes.gif
Step 4 - I added the textured plasticard flooring along the edges. It can be rough, and uneven. I added lots of little panels overlapping, like access panels, etc and made sure the termie bases still fit in the halls.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep4floors.gif
Thats looking really good, they will look great in that once its painted up.

Here's my next update on the base, details added. Next is the base coat.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep5details.gif
Its a good use of leftovers! what did you use to make the corridors? are they leftovers aswell?
ElTanko
The Deathwing are looking awesome. How many Terminators actually fit in the display base?
odmiller
30-07-2009, 21:54
The coridors are plastic packaging from something my wife bought. I saw it and saved it.
All 17 termies and the dread fit in the display.

Here are the next steps.
1st I blocked in the water areas with a black base coat.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep7water.gif
2nd I Painted the water base color and the details.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep8paintdetails.gif
Then I added the washes (they're still wet as you can see).
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basestep9washes.gif
Next steps, I'll paint the teleport homer (that's the black thing in the main room) and spray the sealant, and gloss varnish the water.
Here's a glimpse of what the termies might see looking down the hall...
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/basetunnelview1.gif
Im seriously hooked on this log now, cant wait to see the full outcome, its looking fantastic so far.
Have you thought about painting up any enemy/xenos for a battle scene?
