OK, the base is done. I'll take some better final pics once the models are done.
Here's the base. You can see the varnished water, the frame, and the teleport homer.

Bring it on!!!
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwthindisplaycu.gif
That look fantastic ! Really amazing, and I see what you mean about not having much space for any 'nids, that things cram packed full of mariny goodness!

Now, I've got to get back to finishing the next squad.
AWESOME.
I took one look at your latest stuff and thought Aliens, the sound of the motion trackers sprang to mind in particular.
This is very evocative work, I can imagine 'Stealers rising out of the water behind the Deathwing. Well done so far :)
odmiller
02-08-2009, 08:09
Thanks Ragsta. I actually painted one of the Sgt.s with an auspex in a homage to aliens.
I knocked out a basic terminator tonight.

Here's the next termie, sarge!

Again excellent, I really love the check pattern on the storm bolter, stands out really well.

odmiller
03-08-2009, 15:45
Thanks Eltanko, really nearing the homestretch now, just three more termies to go. I might be switching out the cyclone for a heavy flamer though. I guess I'll paint him last to give me time to decide.
odmiller
04-08-2009, 07:37
Here's the next guy, the LC termie.
I fixed the terminator honor on the shield already.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwsquad3lcfinal.gif
The paint scheme really is simple and effective, but comes out so well!
Is it just simply a black undercoat with white?
ElTanko
Get that Rocketterminator that Flamer. Imho its not that intelligent to fire rockets in Hulks or narrow hallways.. :) But your work is great!
odmiller
04-08-2009, 15:48
Thanks Aerebus. The only reason I haven't yet made the switch is that it's a 40k army, so having the cyclone was the plan.
Looking really awesome :D
Just a thought but maybe dirty up their boots a bit considering there's a lot of grime around and not all that much flooring in places.

Yeah, I've debated this. The problem I find is that just a little weathering looks sloppy. If you're going to weather in one place, you have to do it across the model. I'll keep it in mind though. Part of me thinks I should.
odmiller
06-08-2009, 07:49
Here's the next guy, the thunderhammer termie. One to go.

Here is the final DW termie in the 3rd Squad. On to the Dreadnaught next. I'll get a group shot tomorrow after I seal him.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwsquad3cyclonefinal.gif
The red and black hazard stripes really look good, a nice contrast to the brightness of the rest of the model. Cant wait to see the dread :) is it going to be same scheme, with the red/black?
ElTanko
odmiller
07-08-2009, 15:46
Thanks eltanko. Glad you like them. The Dread will be in a similar scheme, only bigger!

wow, just wow.
might i steal your scheme for some grey(ish) knights?
odmiller
08-08-2009, 22:34
Of course, it's not even mine to give. I think it would work well for Grey Knights and would love to see them.
Very nice work, old boy. I love those group shots, too.
Sinisterfence
08-08-2009, 23:30
that's pretty sweet, the only problem I have with it is that there is only flooring conveniently under the terminator's current positions?
surely it wouldn't be much to add a few more bits of debris to make it look plausible...
odmiller
09-08-2009, 08:25
Sinisterfence, the base isn't meant to be an exact fit, with each model dropping in a slot (which I could have done). It's more just a nice looking tray for carting the models around between games. This way I can add models and take them away without issues. I've built exact fit display trays before, but then I've found them less useful, or overly restrictive.
As for plausibility, eh, not really bothered.
Here's the next progress. I painted the metallic areas, and then gave the whole Dread a wash.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwdreadwip1.gif
your stuff is amazing, could you post pics of WIPs as you paint the model? thanks
odmiller
17-08-2009, 21:25
I think I have been. Every stage should have at least a couple examples. However, I'll make sure to snap some pics tonight when I work on the Dread.
Man, having all these space hulk themed termies ready sure feels good!
Your work is great inspiration for my own deathwing, thank you. :)
I think I have been. Every stage should have at least a couple examples. However, I'll make sure to snap some pics tonight when I work on the Dread.

Yep... can't wait to get my hands on the box :D I shall play the game soon. Apparently GW Stores are getting it soon

Here's my update. I got a good chunk of the whites done. Just have to paint his vest.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwdreadwip2.gif
How do you get the white looking so clean!!! very nice.
What colour is the "vest" going to be?
ElTanko
odmiller
18-08-2009, 08:35
It'll be white too. I'm just tired. I painted the white in multiple thin layers. I apply a section. Then come back to it once it has dried and paint another layer as necessary.
After the "vest" I'll highlight the metallic silver too.
gonzosbignose
18-08-2009, 08:55
ODM...
These Deathwing are breath taking...
Not only is the paint scheme extrordinarily crisp and well carried out, but the other details reflect increidlby on the great painting scheme.
ITs really nice to see also how you acheive it, with the black wash then highlight...
Love it!!!
Regards
My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer
odmiller
18-08-2009, 16:27
Thanks Daniel. Glad you like the finished effect. The dread's fun because he's basically just a big version of the termies, so he's have the hazard stripes, heraldry etc., just on a bigger scale.
odmiller
19-08-2009, 07:19
Here is the next step. First, with the base coat of white done.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwdreadwip3.gif
Then, with the silver highlighted and the areas blacked out for the lenses and hazard markings.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwdreadwip4.gif
odmiller
20-08-2009, 08:15
Here's my progress. Everything's done except the heraldry/stripes and the weathering.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dwdreadwip5.gif
That looks real good. With the extra markings it will look pretty much perfect. They all so so damn neat, really well painted.
ElTanko
odmiller
20-08-2009, 17:26
Thanks ElTanko. If all goes to plan, I should be done with the dread, and the whole project, tonight!
But then what?!?!! What will I look at!!!!
Seriously though, do you have anymore plans in the pipeline?
How about another similar scene, that joins with this one, but full of 'Nids, for a real space hulk feel to it!!
ElTanko

20-08-2009, 19:31
I think my first project is to jump back to my Gaunt's Ghosts thread. I have 20 more Ghosts to paint.

21-08-2009, 07:05
Well, here's the finished Dread, meaning this project is finished. After I spray varnish tomorrow I'll take pics of the whole thing on the display base.

Are you entering it to Golden Demon?
Tommygun
22-08-2009, 08:20
Very nice.
It looks like a small section of a Space Hulk game.
odmiller
22-08-2009, 21:04
Thanks guys. Unfortunately, I think (or know) the Golden Demon is well beyond my reach at the moment. These guys are tabletop quality at the most.
Well I for one think they look great. Much better than I could paint! so be proud!
I think you could easily win painting comps with them!
ElTanko
Yeah, maybe you won't win, maybe... just maybe. The WHOLE thing looks awesome and that's what matters. Entering GD might give some recognition and why not give a shot? If I had anything even close to your standard, I would enter GD.
The world belongs to the bravest... so get your ass together and enter.
Dear Mr Odmiller
Firstly, apologies for lack of contact- I have been digging around for motivation and only recently found it underneath an old bomb shelter.
Secondly, a big well done on completing the Deathwing, that base and the models look great! You annoy me with your modesty about the paintjobs- everything lookgs very nice. I grant that they do make good TT quality :)
You should do a diorama some time, heck you're halfway there already! Nice stuff!
odmiller
23-08-2009, 17:28
Lol, thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm no coward, and have entered before, but I'm also realistic. I know where my pieces stand, and although they may look good from a distance, they simply aren't technically good enough. I make too many compromises for the sake of getting painting done in an acceptable time period.
I'm sure at some point in the future I'll try again, but I'll do something specifically for the GD.
hokay! I'll let you off this time mate :D hehe

I decided to add a base to my second Valk. Notice the two Necromundian Guardsmen grimly holding the building below. The crew chief has a safety line to keep him from falling out. I've also included a family shot of both of the ladies.

Thanks MrP. I'm still waiting to use them in a game unfortunately. Right now they just sit on a shelf.
They are looking good, really like the diorama base going on, nice touch.
ElTanko
Must be a pretty darn impressive looking shelf tho! Make sure it's in your front room!
Dragon Lord
07-09-2009, 23:03
Those Valkyries look really good, the ruins on the bases bring them together very nicely, and the Space Hulk project was simply amazing, can't wait to see what you do next. I agree with Jihad, that must be quite an impressive shelf.
odmiller
08-09-2009, 16:09
Thanks Dragon. The space hulk project sold on ebay, so that will be making some space for me. My current project is a Gaunt's Ghosts one that I'm currently covering in another thread.
How much did you get for that fine collection if you dont mind me asking?

Well, I'm on to my next 40k projects, all Dark Angel related. I'm going to build and paint three drop pods to start.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorswip1.gif
Are you going to build them simultaneously? Good luck if you are, i have heard so many people say they are boring to paint! Look forward to seeing them finished though!!!

I'm going to try. I can see the potential for boredom, so I'm going to try and be clever and paint in sections. We'll see!

Here's the next step. Primed doors. Slow progress because I've been working really late with my real job. However, it's something.

odmiller
05-10-2009, 06:23
So, here's the next step. It may not look like much, but the base coats and the washes for the bone and metallic areas are done.
Tomorrow I should be able to clean them up and highlight those secttions.
After that it's the green areas, then the details on the front and the wear and tear.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorswashes.gif
Looking good so far, is it hard work and dull yet!!??!!

05-10-2009, 07:06
Lol, yes, it's not to exciting. However, I just learned about the upcoming release of the DA fortress, and I want to be done by then, so I must keep moving. In addition, I got a couple packs of really cool marines heads made by a third party, and I'm excited to use them, but I won't let myself until the pods are finished.
the Female IG rule and nice job on the DA

Hey, I've actually made progress. The inside of the doors and the metallics are completed, and they're cleaned up.

Keep it coming, i know how painting the same thing over and over can be, but the end reward is great, and posting it here and getting positive comments only makes it that much better!
I do look forward to seeing them completed, but don't envy you having to paint them all though! But please, keep going :)
ElTanko

15-10-2009, 07:11
I've knocked out the green inside on 5 of the doors. No pictures yet as it's not worth it.
I find it hard to express enthusiasm for drop pod doors but you have painted them very nicely and I am confident the finished article will turn out looking good :)

17-10-2009, 00:42
Thanks guys.

17-10-2009, 10:48
Keep at it, you will get there in the end. I remember when I was doing production line drop pods. Managed to turn 5 around in 10 days. It was soul destroying stuff but I got there.
I find mixing it up with a model you want to paint helps. I had 3 Dreads and an Ironclad to help me through.
odmiller
20-10-2009, 05:55
Here's my latest progress.
I completed the highlights on the green inside of the doors (hard to see).
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorsinnercomplete.gif
I based and washed the icons on the outside.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorsouter1.gif
And I completed the icons. Don't worry about the bad photos, once they are done I'll take some close ups.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorsouter2.gif
Slowly but surely getting there!! Coming along nicely though, they are going to look great all stood together when completed :)

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorsoutsidedone.gif
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorspainted.gif
I then cleaned and primed the bases so I can start the base coats of the next step. This is exciting because the pods can start to take shape.

odmiller
24-10-2009, 21:03
Well, I've finally had some free time to make some progress. Here are the doors and bases assembled and almost completely painted. The only painting left to do is the weathering, which I'll do once the drop pods are done.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppoddoorsbasedone.gif
Here is the next step, the inner cores. As I use these pods for dreads only, I will leave the harnesses out. These have the base coat and ink wash. I have to highlight and add the details.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/droppodinnerturret.gif
Thy are really starting to take shape nicely, can't wait to see them
fully finished. One question, there's a lighter patch around the icons on the side of the pods, is that meant to be there?
ElTanko
odmiller

How can you paint all those pods? It took me days to do ONE!
What's the GW water pot like?

It's taken me weeks to do these three. I am very sick of them now.
The water pot's actually pretty cool. I scoffed at the idea initially until I saw it in use. You can have the brushes stay in the water without bending the bristles.

On the painting table right now is another Ogryn. I finally found the 4th design, so he's got to get added. Just need some batteries for the camera to take a picture.
Here's what his brothers look like, to give you an idea where I'll go with him.

Great work on the Orgryns, the battle worn armour is very good, and I really like the warpaint.

Here's my next Dark Angels project.
I'm building a scout army using the Space Marine codex (first time!)
It's going to represent Vet Sgt Naaman's force at Koth Ridge. I have Naaman (Telion) first, and coming down the road I have another couple of squads on top of the existing 3, a bike squadron, a land speeder storm.
I haven't really thought beyond that point. Here's a taste of what's coming:

Here's the update. I had a lot to do so I just added one scout tonight, but it's the sgt. He looks pissed at his driver, like he's going to smack him around the head. That's dangerous with a chainsword in your hand.

i cant wait to see the finished model and the sgt. looks crack up
Hey, man! Firstly, sorry I've been away for so long, the drop pods kinda... Made me go to sleep ;) They look great now tho!
Ezekiel looks very nice, liking the cloak work especially. I'm with Eltanko on the highlight work for the Storm- looks very nice!
Can I ask about the basing? What paint method do you use? And that looks slightly chunkier than sand, what's the story?
Keep up the good work- liked your Fleet Officer for the IG too btw! Pompous little creature!

Thanks Jihad, glad you're back. I use the GW gravel, base coat black, then dry drush codex grey then space wolf grey. Add the static grass and it's a nice overgrown urban environment.

i agree it looks awesome and i love how the scout sitting on the right is aiming with his bolter.

Thanks guys.
I make them all blond because I want them to sort of come across as clones. Like how all the Salamanders turn pitch black due to the Primarch's genes, these guys all look like this. I also took the look of my army from my favorite piece of DA art, the cover to Let the Galaxy Burn, and they're twins on that.

I'm doing this bunker section first, to get it right. I've completed the base painting of the structure, and then chose one side to complete, to make sure I am happy with it. I think this is the scheme I'll go with. My goal is to complete this section this week.

Those guardsmen are very impressive and the fortress looks even more awesome with your paint job on it, can't wait to see it completed.
Looking great on the terain! :-P
Honestly I would have done the badab black after the first coat of non-black paint. It would have prevented you from seeing the pooling on the flat surfaces that you have now. Are you going to work to remove those?
There's only a small amount of pooling, i would say it adds to the effect anyway.
odmiller
24-12-2009, 16:08
Thanks for the kind words guys. I think the pooling will stay as it helps with the sense of age and exposure to the elements IMHO. I'll be back in town Sunday and plan to get that section done then, with the next bunker for next week.

I've completely derailed my current project to work on some Inquisitorial stuff. All the crazy and cool stuff, like Daemonhost, crazy Radicals, Assassins, and Retines.
Anyway, first I cleaned up some of my old guys, bringing them up to standard. There's a junior inquisitpr, a couple of acolytes, a Daemonhost a couple of servo skulls and a sage.

Aha, a Blanchist. Fair enough. I like the Vostroyans - are they wearing gold/bronze armour and cream coats and trousers?
I guess it's too late now but the Vostroyans would look better with darker clothing as atm a lot of detail is lost as the gold parts blend in with the cream as they are highlighted so much.
odmiller
15-01-2010, 02:56
Well, you can't please everyone I guess. ;)
Actually, I made a clear choice to go with the cream uniforms. Red, blue, green were my natural choices, but are all I ever see in Vostroyans. It's also all over the rest of my Inquisitors, and these guys will stand out from the riot of color in the warbands.
Since I'm on a bit of a John Blanche kick looking at Inq art, I decided to go with something that gives an overall more monochromatic feel, like the figures he paints, but where the little details pop.
Anyway, they also probably are harder to read in the photos than they are in person, where I think they're quite nice.
I appreciate the feedback guys, and have thought pretty hard about it, but I am quite happy with them.

I really like the scheme on your Vossies. I love the way they look almost angelic, like beings of light, and then you notice the fur, and the metal, and you realise that they're not - they just want to kill for the Emperor! :D
The Vosroyans look great, I think the colours bring them together really well, so they don't look patchy or too bright. I too like John Blanche, all his stuff is great.

I decided the Veteran Squad needed an update to actually see some playing time. I don't recall FW making such a helmet, although I could be wrong. I too am also wondering where the head is from, though.

It's from a company called Max Mini. They make a range of cool "steampunk" helmets perfect for Heresy era marines, and guys who use old school armor like the the Consecrators. Glad you like him.

Almost there.
Here's the first big step of progress on the tower. It's a big freaking monster. Next I think I will paint the details around the top, spotlights, control panels, etc.

The beer helped me get through it, lol.
I got the details at the top of the tower done. Time to take a break.

If you go back a couple pages you can see a step by step tutorial. Codex-space wolves-skull white - badab black wash.

Here's the next step, I got all the gold and silver done, and then the washes on top of that.
Only highlights, some lenses, and then some clean up tomorrow and this baby is done!
