Thanks Eltanko.

04-11-2010, 16:59
The finished basilisk looks great odm!

04-11-2010, 23:13
Thanks man. I am hoping to knock out the Medusa tonight so I can getr back to some troops.

05-11-2010, 06:34
Here's the finished Medusa (or other bassie variant). I notice a couple of points to clean up on the shield detail, but otherwise it's complete.

05-11-2010, 08:48
Looking just as awesome as ever, it is one fine beast!

05-11-2010, 15:34
Thanks Icecream boy, glad you like it. I think the heavy weapon teams are next.

05-11-2010, 16:33
Looking great odm! Eager to see what you do with the ehavy weapon teams!

05-11-2010, 18:30
Me too, lol. I'm thinking through how I want to paint the sandbags and las cannons now.

10-11-2010, 15:51
Me too, lol. I'm thinking through how I want to paint the sandbags and las cannons now.

I often find myself thinking the same thing when sat around doing nothing lol :D

Sandbags could look quite nice starting with bestial brown as a shade then snakebit leather, mixing with bleached bone for highlights.

12-11-2010, 06:35
I missed your recipe. It might have worked out better.

Here's a quick post to show I'm still making progress. Better pic next time.

The weapons platforms are done, and I've done the base coat for the uniforms.

12-11-2010, 06:42
Impressive as always, Odmiller. Carry on!

12-11-2010, 19:09
Looking good odm!

14-11-2010, 21:52
They look good, mite be an idea to give them a brown wash though as they are kind of lost in the snow a bit atm.

16-11-2010, 18:10
Here are the finished Heavy Weapons teams. I'm not sure if I'll tackle more troops or another vehicle next.

I'll come back and look at the sandbags down the road, see if they bother me.

16-11-2010, 18:59
Looking good :)
What was your recipe for the sandbags?

16-11-2010, 19:28
I based them in bleached bone, gave them a black wash, then highlighted back in bleached bone. I generally use a brown wash for bleached bone, but didn't want them to seem too "warm".

17-11-2010, 07:49
I really like those weapons teams. They're looking very cool!

Monsterzonk :skull:

17-11-2010, 14:36
Thanks Monsterzonk, glad you like them. I'm pretty happy with how they came out.

17-11-2010, 15:37
A brown wash, with a highlight of bleached bone on the edges would probably be enough to make them look less washed out :) Always hard to tell how they would actually look in real life when looking at photo's though.

19-11-2010, 21:48
Yeah, agreed. I don't mind them in person.

So, exciting news from my perspective. I just ordered some new Pig Iron Heads, Officer, NCO and radio man heads. Very cool.

This means I'll be going back through the army, and replacing the heads, which in turn will free up some more heads so I can add additional squads down the line.

They're very cool sculpts, and should add even more character to the army. I'm very excited by this find.

icecream boy
20-11-2010, 04:49
Sounds really exciting, can't wait to see what you get up to with them =)

22-11-2010, 23:08
Me either. In the meantime I started a tank. I'll take a pic if I can find my camera.

23-11-2010, 01:19
I decided to start my Vanquisher while I am waiting for the new heads. This is my Pask commanding.

23-11-2010, 14:23
I'm not really a fan of this model, it looks rather ork like with such a big main gun. I think they need to stretch the Lemanruss chasis a bit to make it more in proportion. Waiting with anticipation for your paintjob though, it's always a pleasure to look at your models :)

23-11-2010, 15:50
Well, to be fair to GW, this is my conversion. It's a basic Russ with a barrel from the Baneblade. Hopefully the paintjob works well enough that you like the end result.

24-11-2010, 17:30
Ah rite, I hadn't noticed the conversion :D

25-11-2010, 06:36
I guess that's a good sign. Sorry about the foreshortened picture. Probably makes the barrel look even worse.

Here's the finished Vanquisher, with it's superstar tank commander.

I got the replacement officer/NCO heads I wanted, so I'll start subbing them in over the weekend. I'm pretty excited, they look cool.

25-11-2010, 19:58
So, these are the only head swaps I needed to do from painted minis. The basic rule of thumb is units that would expect to be away from the fighting will have the soft headgear. And the Sentinals have little helmets with com beads.

icecream boy
26-11-2010, 07:06
Great idea with the Vanquisher, I like the use of the Baneblade barrel though I'd have to agree it would be better with an elongated chassis.

26-11-2010, 13:45
The head swaps look good, although for realism All the tank crew would be weraing helmets. Beret's are only worn when on peace keeping missions and the like when there is a low threat as it is less intimidating than wearing helmets. A tank has lots of big moving parts to crack you on the head.

26-11-2010, 15:08
Well, you're absolutely correct of course, which is why I made sure they all had helmets in the first place. My thinking has changed a little in line with having some variation in the force for the sake of aesthetics. I still want to have some rules though.
So the Company Command squad will be in soft hats, a peaked cap for the officer and soft hats for his squad. All the tank officers will be in peaked caps, as will be the artillery commanders. Almost everyone else will be in helmets.

28-11-2010, 15:23
Fair enough, the rule of cool alwasy triumphms :)

28-11-2010, 18:52
The vanquisher looks great ODM, nice job!

29-11-2010, 15:55
Thanks guys, glad you like them. I had to take a little break to knock together some terrain. I'm getting in my first game in a long time this weekend, and it's my first non-store game in forever, so I decided to put together some generic sci-fi terrain. Building terrain is not my first love, so it's pretty haphazard and slapdash, but I think it'll do. I'll post pictures later.

30-11-2010, 21:16
Head swaps are painted, but they're not really interesting to see online.

Here's the next big project, the body of the infantry platoon.

01-12-2010, 08:12
Nice. I see your army factory is working on full capacity. :) My production line is much slower. Btw my first battle with this Guard army will be in Campaign agains Forces of Chaos, but I have to finish it. :)

01-12-2010, 15:54
Lol, well, I have a game this weekend, and I only play with painted minis! So, this platoon needs to get to a state where I can play with them. At that point I'll have a 1500pt list as needed. I'll have two tanks, two chimeras, and a penal legion squad that don't make the cut because they're still unpainted.

03-12-2010, 19:51
Here's the in progress assembly line. I've made some significant progress. I need to paint the weapons and "special" individual gear (radios, bionics, banner,) and the grey highlights, but everything else is complete. Good enough to get them on the battlefield tomorrow.

05-12-2010, 00:21
Looking good, although some close up shots would be nice to see the details ;)
Have you got any pics of the terrain your working on?

05-12-2010, 03:28
Now that they're in a decent state, I'll work on them a squad at a time to finish up, and will take closer pics. I'll try to take some terrain pics too.

07-12-2010, 21:42
Well, I've made some progress on finishing up the platoon. Well, it's technically not a platoon, as it's two infantry squads, and then actually the company command squad. Everything is done except the weapons and the basing for everything, and for 9 of the models, the weapons are complete.

Here's what's done (but for the basing). The Company command squad models are in the soft hats.

Squad Leaders and Company Commander

Radio men

Special Weapons troopers

08-12-2010, 07:20
Man, I love these heads on the Cadians! They look so much better! And I really like the way you've painted the eye lenses. Really nice effect.

Monsterzonk :skull:

08-12-2010, 07:27
Excellent work here, man !
Nice paintjob, and those heads fits really good on the cadian bodies !

08-12-2010, 08:48
Very cool. These guys look great and the damage is a nice touch.

08-12-2010, 08:54
Nice. I only think these meltas looks a bit big. This is why I will use these from FW. Same as their Shotguns.

08-12-2010, 21:32
Thanks guys, great to hear. I tend to agree about the melta guns, but for whatever reason that's the scale GW goes with.

Working on the banner bearer tonight, medic is done. Should have pics of completed command squad tonight.

09-12-2010, 16:33
Here's the completed Company Command Squad. The banner looks quite nice in person.

Next I'll finish up the infantrymen from the two squads, only rifles to go.

09-12-2010, 17:54
The infantry are looking great ODM! Nice work!

09-12-2010, 21:48
Thanks man.

Here's the completed 1st Squad.

icecream boy
10-12-2010, 06:04
The banner does look quite stunning, you achieved a nice white finish around the edges too, without sharp highlighting which is good =)

10-12-2010, 16:04
Here's the finished Second squad. I'll try to gather up a group shot next, as this is sort of a milestone, 1500pts painted of this army.

10-12-2010, 17:59
I decided to treat myself for all my hard work. Before I paint the next vehicle, here's Sly Marbo.

10-12-2010, 18:01
The banner does look quite stunning, you achieved a nice white finish around the edges too, without sharp highlighting which is good =)

Thanks Icecream boy. I appreciate the feedback. The painting's a little more subtle on the banner than normal for me, but it shows up quite well in person while it gets washed out in the picture.

icecream boy
10-12-2010, 22:21
Your Sly Marbo stand in looks great, can we have a sot from the back? I'm finding it hard to pinpoint where the backpack is from at this angle.
I really like the reserved 'come and get me' look you have given him, it's not what you would expect from this character.

11-12-2010, 02:02
Sure thing, I'll give you shots from both sides. It's the Vossie sniper with a demo charge attached.

11-12-2010, 03:15
Here's Marbo. I noticed the red marks on the grenade needed to be touched up and took care of that. I think the next plan is another vehicle or two, then the Penal Legion, then the last vehicles.

icecream boy
12-12-2010, 08:07
Cheers mate, what a stunning model it is. The chipping is wonderfully simple, as is the freehand I've just noticed.
About your blue undercoat though, is it me or does it look rather thick? It just looks like there's little depth in the creases, that's all. It might just be because of the camo though.

12-12-2010, 08:54
I really like the colour scheme you have used on. The command squad and the banner look great. Look forward to seeing more.

12-12-2010, 22:42
Looks like he has applied a shade to the base colour.
Nice conversion and paint job, not totally sure about the half demo charge on the backpack.

13-12-2010, 10:25
Very nice work on the infantry squad odm, and harker looks great!

13-12-2010, 17:45
Thanks guys, glad you like them.

The paint on the fatigues is nice and thin. I maybe should have pumped up the contrast with another wash or highlights, considering he's a special character. The demo charge is a necessity unfortunately for Marbo. I think it looks decent in person.

14-12-2010, 18:17
I'm going to take a group picture of everything in this army this coming weekend as I have a big game that will allow me to field everything and give a nicer setting for pictures.

Sooo, I've started on the last vehicles. Certain elements I'll paint assembly line style, then I'll complete each individually. Here are the vehicle commanders. The helmeted ones are the Chimera commanders, while the other two are tankers.

I think I'll do all four turrets next.

14-12-2010, 22:11
Looking good odm!

icecream boy
15-12-2010, 01:05
Looking really good, how do you pump out so much stuff so quickly?

15-12-2010, 06:38
Thanks guys. I have two secrets right now.

1. I don't play video games. In my personal time, I paint. My wife goes to sleep between 10 and 11 and that gives me 2 to 3 hours a night to paint.
2. I make sure to do something every day. Even if it's minor, like basing some minis or getting something primed, I can't rest until I've done something.

All this will change, as I start my MBA program in January. It's all evenings, and my free time is going to drop to near zero.

Which comes to the third secret. Have a deadline. This army has to be done, for all intents and purposes, before school starts again.

15-12-2010, 09:48
That's some proper discipline. Do you ever get the attack of mojolessness?

but Good luck on the MBA,

Great consistent work on the minis.

16-12-2010, 18:32
Thanks Xepher. In order to keep focused, I read a lot of the black library stuff. Aside from keeping current as new stuff comes out, I've reread the entire Cain series while working on this project. Keeps a nice IG focus!

Here's a big update. The last of the vehicles! I went nuts and painted 4 tanks in the last few days.

First, two Russes, a Punisher and a Standard Russ.

Then, two Chinmeras for my Infantry Squads.

And finally, here's a shot of the army so far awaiting deployment. I'll have a picture of it all together on the tabletop this weekend.

The only remaining unit for the Cadian 122nd as initially planned is the penal legion squad. We'll see where we go after they're done.

16-12-2010, 19:21
Thats one hell of an army Odmiller. Lots of time, money and effort. Well worth it!

16-12-2010, 19:38
Thanks El Tanko. As far as the money goes, I didn't notice it. The vehicles are all things I collected over the years, or traded other stuff for. Nothing new was purchased, all the newer stuff I made with conversions. The guys are the same thing, stuff I've had for years in various states, or recieved in trades over time. The only new purchases for this army were heads.

17-12-2010, 07:26
Nice view to see whole army. Great work. :)

17-12-2010, 08:05
Thanks TomG.

So, as I started work on the penal legion squad, I realized how much I really, really, really hate the Catachan models. Everything about them is bad. And, the squad as it progressed on the assembly line was not making me feel any better.

So, I decided to finish one guy up as a test paint. Although the model still has a ton of flaws, the finished paint scheme actually looks decent, so I think I'll finish them up.

These models are at least a decade old, and have been through multiple owners and paintings. The parts are the scrapings at the bottom of my bits box, as I'm certainly not buying any catachans, so you'll have to forgive some of the rough edges.

17-12-2010, 08:32
Catachans will be good for custom servitors as seen here on warseer, but nothing more.

17-12-2010, 10:20
In defence of the plastic 'Chans, if you are aware that they're not the Perry twins' best, you can make some nice models with them IMO. It is advisable not to use second-hand models for the task though! :p

Interesting penal trooper ODM, where's the helmet from? Pig Iron or WWind?

17-12-2010, 13:18
Haven't new catachan models been released fairly recently? They may be a lot better than the one you have.

17-12-2010, 15:29
Thanks guys. All they did with the new release was add a plastic command squad. I used some of the parts on my marbo, but there's not a lot else. Anyway, I like the test paint enugh to see them through and finish up the whole army project properly.

icecream boy
17-12-2010, 22:40
I quite like the penal trooper, the only thing wrong with it is the arms IMO. I think it's the alternate paint scheme that does the trick.

17-12-2010, 23:48
In defence of the plastic 'Chans, if you are aware that they're not the Perry twins' best, you can make some nice models with them IMO. It is advisable not to use second-hand models for the task though! :p

Interesting penal trooper ODM, where's the helmet from? Pig Iron or WWind? the helmets for these guys are from a set of alternate WW2 heads, weird war 2 I think. Don't know who makes them, picked them up one time a year ago. I always grab interesting bits for future projects, but forget where they came from when the time comes.

18-12-2010, 03:48
It looks to me like a West Wind job to be honest.

18-12-2010, 22:46
You're probably right. I know the pig iron stuff because I ordered it, the store bought stuff is more spur of the moment.

20-12-2010, 20:12
So, I got to field my entire army in a 2500 pt game vs. Dark Eldar last night. These guys made up 2250 of it, and I added a squad of Arbites (Vets) in a Chimera to round out the 2500, as well as an astropath. It made a little fluff sense as the Arbites and the Cadian 122nd stood shoulder to shoulder during the battle for Vogen.

Anyway. The mission was capture and control.

Here was the start of the game. My opponent had first turn, and I kept quite a lot of my forces off the table - Marbo, sentinals, penal legion, vets (arbites) in Chimera, and vets on foot. The two infantry squads are in the chimeras on the left.
Immediately you can see he started damaging my tanks. My general plan was to keep enough vehicles to act as a screen and make it hard for his units to get to my home base, and to have the firepower to kill the ones that did get through, while I ran the infantry in the chimeras out into no manís land.
Here you can see a little of my plan working as a chimera full of veterans, penal legion, and a couple of sentinals race for his base. In the end, he wiped the last troops off my base in turn five, but neither of us had troops to claim, and I unloaded got a veteranís squad into his base to contest at the same time. A draw! Lots of casualties on both sides, lots of fun.

20-12-2010, 21:16
I love the man in the gas mask. It is such a pleasure Reading this plog.

21-12-2010, 01:05
Here's the WIP shot of the penal legion squad. It's a quick one just to show progress. The camo, t-shirts, and skin is all done. I'm hoping to finish them all tonight, then I'll take a better pic.

21-12-2010, 01:06
I love the man in the gas mask. It is such a pleasure Reading this plog.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

21-12-2010, 06:41
Can I see here some tits soldiers? :)

Admiral Koppenflak
21-12-2010, 07:05
Can I see here some tits soldiers? :)

I was thinking this before, but didn't want to offend them... They look like they could snap me in half with their pinkies.

21-12-2010, 17:16

A few years ago a gaming club cast up parts to convert female IG. The cadians are very good, and are mixed into my other squads. The catachans were a tougher prospect, and a lot of the parts aren't really usable because they just aren't good enough. However, I've managed to salvage a couple for this squad. They are obviously way too huge and ripped, but then again, so are the rest of the catachans. They are all insanely muscled.

Soooo, I've decided that the penal legion soldiers get a regular dose of steroids in their diet to make them hardier and more reckless.

22-12-2010, 04:05
And here they are, the last squad in the army. It's not the best, but I blame the models. I tried.

Here was December 22nd:

And here is September 22nd, today:

Officially a 3 month paint for 2250 points of IG.

22-12-2010, 10:06
Nice work on the Penal Legion odm! The whole army looks great all together like that, and done in such a reasonable time period too! Any plans to expand?

22-12-2010, 12:26
The army looks really good, I think you got the dates on the pics muddled up though :P

22-12-2010, 15:32
Thanks guys. I will take a little break from IG to add some Dark Angels. I'll put the results in this blog. As for the date thing, that was a test to see if you were paying attention.

23-12-2010, 13:02
Thanks guys. I will take a little break from IG to add some Dark Angels. I'll put the results in this blog. As for the date thing, that was a test to see if you were paying attention.

Yeh course it was, we all believe u......:p

24-12-2010, 06:31
Aren't the months the other way around?! :P

Apart from that a job well done! Three months and an army ready! Score!

Admiral Koppenflak
24-12-2010, 06:41
Nonsense. The man's a timelord. He can say it was 1066 and I'd still be cool with it. :P

24-12-2010, 10:49
That's true! I was just confused as a mere mortal that I am :P

03-01-2011, 20:13
Thanks for the kind words guys. Sorry about the switched dates, but if I edit them now, all your posts will look foolish, and we can't have that.

Here's my quick return to the ranks of the DA. I had a Librarian in termie armor sitting around unpainted, sooo, here he is.

Not sure what the next plan is. I've got both DA and IG stuff I can do, but I'm up in the air a bit as I get the bug one way, then the other.

03-01-2011, 20:46
hmm.. not sure about this one. I like the paint job but I don't like the amount of grass on the base, there's too much of it. I like my bases burnt and rubley. But that's me.

Why is his armour blue though?

03-01-2011, 21:15
He's a Librarian, thus the blue. I"ll make sure I tone down the grass in the future!

03-01-2011, 21:19
Oh right! Duh... There was sth in the fluff that they are all Ultramarines initialy wasn't there?

Sorry for a stupid question :D

icecream boy
03-01-2011, 22:49
I don't mind the amount of grass personally, but I think what the problem is lies with the way its been applied. I'm not sure if you know, but when the glue is drying, blowing on it can cause it to stand on its end thus looking more natural.

03-01-2011, 23:05
Good tip Icecream boy. I'll have to pay more attention in the future.

04-01-2011, 07:22
Well, I've decided to push on with another marine project, another attack bike. I built him and did the base tonight. Don't worry, the riders aren't attached yet.

04-01-2011, 07:33
Hm. ODM why you have moldline on this poweraxe? ;)

04-01-2011, 07:39
I saw that too. I'll be looking at the model to see what I can do tomorrow.

04-01-2011, 08:15
I don't mind the amount of grass personally, but I think what the problem is lies with the way its been applied. I'm not sure if you know, but when the glue is drying, blowing on it can cause it to stand on its end thus looking more natural.

also not applying with your fingers. use sth to pick it up and then throw it on the base or even pluck it in. NEVER use fingers and NEVER dip the base in the grass pot... that's my way of applying static grass. Also blowing when it is drying, great tip!

06-01-2011, 07:30
Another good tip. The grass on the biker base should be better.

So here's the next Ravenwing update. I've painted the base metal areas, and added the washes. Next step, highlight the metals. Then it's the black edges, then the details.

I've also been undergoing a massive cleanup of my DA minis. All power weapons and melta coils lost the green tint, and all plasma weapons changed to a blue tint. Makes me much happier. I have a rough plan to go and update each squad with highlights, etc, but that's a longer term project. We'll see.

06-01-2011, 07:41
I am very impressed with your Penal Legion squad, very nicely done and great use of parts fella. Looking forward to future updates.

06-01-2011, 07:47
Thanks Petay1985, I appreciate the feedback. I like the look with the paintjob, but the catachan models are so bad. The new command squad is much better, but there's only so much to work with there. Glad you like them.

10-01-2011, 20:36
Here's the finished bike.

And for reference, here's a shot of my DA forces as they stand here at the beginning of 2011.

10-01-2011, 21:22

10-01-2011, 21:36
Indeed, impressive force.

11-01-2011, 06:54
Damn OdMiller! That DA force is huge! I never realised you had so many!

11-01-2011, 15:37
Thanks ElTanko. It's been growing since 2006. The funny thing is I sold another DA force of about equal size to fund it!

11-01-2011, 19:26
Gorgeous DA's man. I love the old skool look. The Original Dark Angels!

12-01-2011, 15:47
Thanks Razor. I like my DA daaark.

12-01-2011, 17:41
Here's the first step on my Termie squad. There are wearing very old marks of armor and may end up scattered throughout the other squads. The basic forms are complete, now I just need to add the bling.

13-01-2011, 20:36
Here's the squad all built and blingy. Ready for the Primer.

14-01-2011, 14:48
Wow, thats a LOT of Dark Angels odm!

Those latest terminators are looking great! Have you seen the updated FAQ on the GW site? At long last the DAs have found the power switch on their storm shields, a 3++ save all the time!

14-01-2011, 16:03
I'm very excited. Adding these two storm shields, as well as recently painting a detachable Cyclone I can add when I need, now seems like a brilliant move.

14-01-2011, 17:36
Oooh I really like the old skool look and feel to those termies!

14-01-2011, 21:59
Thanks elTanko. They're all primed now. I think I'll paint one at a time.

20-01-2011, 16:08
Here's the first of the Terminators, the Sgt. He still needs the grass on the base, and sealant, but the painting's done.

20-01-2011, 19:12
Ooh he is sexy. Very knight-ish looking.

20-01-2011, 20:48
Very nice odm! Very nice indeed. He looks great, the shoulderpads and the head really make the model imo.

21-01-2011, 06:00
Thanks guys. I agree, the helmet and pads make the model. I've had a busy week, but hope to add another model this weekend. Next week I free up a bit, so no matter what the squad will get done soon.

21-01-2011, 08:24
Oh man! That is one very cool looking model! Has a real dark feel to him, very imposing!

Admiral Koppenflak
21-01-2011, 09:41
I must know one thing:

Where did you get that helmet!?

Captain Johan
21-01-2011, 10:05
Thats a maxi-mini steamknight helmet.

21-01-2011, 19:56
It's a very nice looking model, the helmet and shoulder pad swap really does make it stand out. Where are the shoulder pads from, FW? The paint job is up to yours usual high stanard as well :)

24-01-2011, 21:37
The shoulder pads are from Micro Art studios.

Well, I'm finally freed up to do some work on these guys tonight. Pictures will be taken.

26-01-2011, 06:30
I just hand paint it on. I should probably look at pens, but there's something about a brush I like.

Here are the two storm shield lads with the Sgt. Again, grass and sealant remain to do.

27-01-2011, 07:02
Here's the Lightning Claw trooper...

icecream boy
27-01-2011, 07:29
Marines don't usually tickle my fancy, though these Termies are quite impressive with their large shoulder pads.

27-01-2011, 19:38
Nice, simple... effective! I love it!

@icecream boy: dude... have I read your post wrong! Wooo! :D

27-01-2011, 20:05
Brilliant work on the terminators odm!

27-01-2011, 20:22
Lol, I'm always looking for large "shoulder pads" too.

Glad you guys like them, here is the finished squad.

01-02-2011, 19:11
Here's the start of my next project. I traded out the jump pack from my Sgt to give him a metal veteran pack, so he's done, and in the back you can see the 5 new members of the squad.

I'm waiting for some torsos in the mail. In the meantime I painted up the jump packs and got the legs on the base.

06-02-2011, 14:30
Oooh, assault marines! Always good to see some of them around.

07-02-2011, 21:59
Sorry for the delay, still awaiting the torsos.

I've decided to add a little bit to my Cadian 122nd, some advisors and a plasma turret as an alternate for one of the russes.

Two body guards, an astropath, and an officer of the fleet.

And the finished turret...

07-02-2011, 23:00
Very nice odm, the FW turret is a beauty!

08-02-2011, 00:44
I agree Salvindogath, the turret's a great model. Glad you like how it turned out.

08-02-2011, 04:11
Here are the completed completed bodyguards.

icecream boy
09-02-2011, 06:04
Great idea with the Valkyrie gunner bodies, they suit the bodyguard look well.

09-02-2011, 15:41
Thanks icecream boy. Ever since I had them in my bits box, I had something like this in mind for them.

09-02-2011, 20:27
The torsos arrived, but in the meantime I decided to bulk out another Devastator combat squad. I had two las cannon marines lying around, so I've added these guys to make anothr playable option.

The silver areas and armor areas are still to be done.

10-02-2011, 19:56
The bodyguards have come out very nicely odm, and the Dark Angels are progressing well too!

11-02-2011, 18:21
Thanks, glad you like them. I don't know if they'll ever see the table, but I had to get the idea out of my head, so there they are.

Here's some more progress on the Dev's. All that's left to do is the green highlighting and the squad markings (and of course the grass). You can see their two squad mates hanging around in the background.

20-02-2011, 06:16
Sorry for the delay in the next post. Real life decided that the marines needed to take a back seat for a while. I've had a couple of hours this evening to finish them up, so here we go. The combat squad is complete.

On to the Assault marines next I think.

20-02-2011, 20:36
Looking good odm!

20-02-2011, 21:52
Lovely Guard (pig iron heads look ace) and Dark Angels. Really love the Terminators, those resin parts from Maximini really finish them off. Good to see Black Dark Angels, never really liked the swap to green.

20-02-2011, 22:10
Glad you like them guys. The regular marines are actually black with green highlights. It gives them a really dark feel.

01-03-2011, 17:56
Here are the 5 assault marines with the first stages of the metal areas done. Next, I'll highlight the metallics.

01-03-2011, 18:16
Those Dark Angel devastators look really nice! Love the highlights on them and the clothes/capes/whatever looks really well done. What's your recipe for green??
The freehand on the shoulderpads looks really well done too :)

The wip assault squad is coming along nicely can't wait to see it finished, gotta love that green color :D

01-03-2011, 19:41
The green is just chaos black with DA green highlights. As easy as you can get.

Glad you like them.

03-03-2011, 07:40
Here's a rather poor shot of the completed 2nd combat squad of the 7th squad.

03-03-2011, 08:22
Looking goood. I really like the extras on the kneepads, really good stuff.

03-03-2011, 09:32
Yeah odmiller, your green on those dudes is SO simple and yet SOOOOO effective! I like to come up with technques like that too :D

For example: skin on my orks is Bubonic Brown or Sunburst Yellow (depending on the size of an ork) with two or one thick washes of Thraka Green. Everyone seems to love that and I keep using this technique for Fantasy.

K.I.S.S.! :D

03-03-2011, 15:22
Glad you like em eltanko. Gotta love those nice round kneepads for company markings.

Wikear, you're absolutely right. For large numbers of troops - finding a simple scheme that looks good is key. It's no good coming up with a crazily awesome color scheme if it is too time consuming for you to replicate on the masses.

11-03-2011, 17:32
I painted up an Artillery Officer to go with my IG.

11-03-2011, 17:53
Here's a rather poor shot of the completed 2nd combat squad of the 7th squad.

These are excellent. I love how you incorporated the black as well. Alot of folks forget that the DA used black in the early RT and then 2nd edition days.

11-03-2011, 19:08
These are excellent. I love how you incorporated the black as well. Alot of folks forget that the DA used black in the early RT and then 2nd edition days.

Glad you like them. Here's a rather poor shot of the squad as a whole.

11-03-2011, 19:15
Still looking good man, truly Dark angels.

16-03-2011, 09:19
Here's my new project. Let's peak inside the door. What could it be?

Why it's my DA Stormraven of course. Will it ever see the playing field? Does it really matter?

Here's the first WIP shot. I did the interior's lighting before assembly, hence the red spray paint. Anyway, it'll be a gradual project, but I have to say assembly got me quite excited. the kit really fits together well.

17-03-2011, 06:53
Making a little progress now.

In order to close them up, I need to get the cockpits done. I got the pilot's cockpit and surrounding details done tonight. He's a Ravenwing Techmarine. Servitor will be tomorrow.

Here's a shot of what the nose cannon, sealed cockpit look like. The finished version will be green, but I do that last.

Now, the other bit I finished tonight was the front and back ramp. Here's how they look.

And finally, here's a shot of the Stormraven on the base, which is also done. Don't worry, it'll be green in the end.

17-03-2011, 09:40
It's been a looooooooong time since I leave a comment on this thread, but Iv' kept an eye on it.
Very, very good work on both your IG and your DA. I hope to see the stormraven finished soon (nice painting on all the details of the inside and cockpit), with some group shot of your DA army !

17-03-2011, 16:37
Thanks for the feedback Tancrede, your Bretonnian log is one of my all time favorites. I'll try an army shot next time I get the army off the shelf.

17-03-2011, 22:30
I got the servitor cockpit and assault cannons painted. It's hard to get a good picture through the glass, but you get the idea

18-03-2011, 21:53
Here's the next progress. It's probably hard to tell, but I got a ton of work done in that I got all the metallic areas based and washed. This was a pain, but it's done. I'll paint the metallic highlights next, then it's on to the color stuff.

19-03-2011, 00:33
Looking good odm! Really looking forward to seeing it in all its green glory!

20-03-2011, 02:19
Thanks man. I am too!

21-03-2011, 20:16
That big bertha is looking sweet.

23-03-2011, 12:18
This is looking good so far. Good job on the interior details, it will really add to the finished model getting them done properly :)

31-03-2011, 20:48
Thanks guys.

Well, it's been a while. Real life has been very busy with me, but I've finally made some progress. Not much to see, but actually a bit of work done. All the metallics are highlighted and complete. I'll pick out all the details like lights and logos next, and then it'll start to look like something.

01-04-2011, 20:35
Here's the next update. I completed all the little details and icons. Next it's on to the main color painting.

04-04-2011, 15:13
Well, the armor highlighting is progress at a decent pace. I think I'm about 1/4 done with it. Hopefully pics at some point soon.

06-04-2011, 18:09
cool! just post the finished stuff... I want to be awed :D

07-04-2011, 07:32
nice work on the stormraven, suits the ravenwing colours particularly well! good to see someone else using it for a non-blood angels/grey knight army too.

12-04-2011, 17:40
Thanks guys.

Well, It's been a while since I've posted. I have been making slow progress. It's one of those times where I'm just not motivated. However, we're slowly moving to completion. On the green edging, only the wings are left. From that point it'll be a little be of weathering, and then any markings I want to add, and then done.

12-04-2011, 18:18
where are the termi shoulder plates from dude?

12-04-2011, 18:23
I think they're Micro Arts studios.

12-04-2011, 18:44
Cool stuff man, keep going on :D

12-04-2011, 22:21
Thanks Obermutant, plugging away.

15-04-2011, 00:33
Here's the bird with the highlighting complete. Next, some mild weathering, and then, a few markings, and that'll be all she wrote.

Master Commander Ajax
15-04-2011, 03:21
Nicely done!. I actually think the Stormraven looks better in Dark Angels colors as opposed to Blood angel colors.

15-04-2011, 11:24
It looks great in DA colours, wierd considering how i think it looks absolutely crap in BA and GK colours?

15-04-2011, 16:55
Thanks guys. I need to get on the ball and get this thing finished up this weekend.

20-04-2011, 21:18
Here's the final bird. It belongs to the chapter's motor pool.

21-04-2011, 05:59
Wow! As others have said, it looks great in DA colors. Nice work.

21-04-2011, 06:56
looks great fella, top work, i can see now that it is clearly in the DA Green, rather than Ravenwing livery as i'd first thought. would you be kind enough to post up some more pictures of the finished model?

21-04-2011, 16:17
I'll pull together some more pictures once we've got some decent sunlight here. It's been overcast all week unfortunately.

23-05-2011, 21:18
Well, after a month or so of real life, I'm back for a little addition to the boys in green. I decided I needed another tactical squad, and that some Black Reach marines I had lying around would do the job perfectly.

So, here they are assembled. I'm still deciding whether they should be DA or a successor. I already have one successor squad in the army, and my veterans are all mixed, so another squad might be neat. However, adding another DA squad would help me bulk out the 4th company, past the halfway mark.

If I get some momentum, I have a bit more to follow these guys, however, no word on that until they're complete.

24-05-2011, 14:21
The stormbird turned out excellent, I'm not a big fan of the model itself, but your paintjob looks great :) I would say more da's with the black reach lot!

25-05-2011, 17:48
I think so. Got them primed yesterday, hopefully start tonight.

02-06-2011, 20:22
So here's some progress. Just a quick pic.

As you can see the packs are done, and most of the details on the marines, except the green armor highlighting.

02-06-2011, 21:58
Oh why the small size of the picture?

02-06-2011, 22:36
just a quick snap to show I'm working again. Better pictures will follow.

03-06-2011, 05:27
Here are a couple more updates. The packs are complete, and all details are on the marines to, except the green highlighting. That's the next step. After that, the weapons.

08-06-2011, 07:07
Here's the next step. The marines are complete, sans hands. So, next step is obviously to do the hands and weapons.

10-06-2011, 08:28
Here is the final squad. Lighting's not too good, so the picture's sort of dark. The GS work on the Sgt is really starting to bug me, but I'm not sure what steps I'll take to fix it, if any at all.

I decided I needed to be able to convert rhino's to razorbacks to give me more list flexibility, so I knocked together these two turrets I can tack on them for game purposes. One painted, one to go. Again, dark photo.

11-06-2011, 11:02
liking that razorback weapon idea, good economical use of bits. Nice DAs in general

13-06-2011, 20:49
The sons of the lion are looking really good. I love the Storm Raven, it turned out really good.

14-06-2011, 00:14
Thanks guys. The Razorback turrets are done, I'll get a pic later.

Not sure of the next project. But I'll start something tonight I hope.

icecream boy
14-06-2011, 06:33
If you do decide to redo that GS job, I suggest shaving down the chest plate before re-sculpting the top part of the robe. The bottom half may only need another layer to add some depth I think. GL if you do decide to do it =)

14-06-2011, 22:49
Yeah, I think you're right. Next time I'll shave it down. I think he's going to stand pat, aside from a little bending back of the hood I did to show more of his face.

I think my next plan will involve termies again. Still trying to decide if I want to make the commitment of time.

15-06-2011, 06:18
Well, I've embarked on what will be a rather time consuming project. I'm bringing my Deathwing into the 41st millenium. This incarnation of my DW have had black armor, and I've decided it's time to move past the Plains World incident. So, white armor for me. Just like the Deathwing themselves, I'm painting over the armor black.

I did a test paint.

I'm quite happy. The photo's a little blurry, but on the table the mini look nice and crisp.

15-06-2011, 08:04
I went a little nuts and got another marine done. Only about 20 more to go!

16-06-2011, 03:25
I decided my heresy era armored termies would be brought into 40k time too, but rather than get a full armor repaint, I decided they belong to the Consecrators successor, afterall, they get all the old revered gear.

16-06-2011, 06:59
very nice work indeed fella, those heresy-era-ish terminators are really fantastic. beautiful work.

16-06-2011, 07:46
The deathwing are looking great Od, I bet they are a bit of a pain to paint though!! I love those heresy era Termies, did you make then or buy them? I'd love to get my hands on some!

Master Commander Ajax
16-06-2011, 12:01
Loving those Old school terminators. Will have to read the whole blog when I get a chance.

16-06-2011, 15:27
If you go back some pages you will find the heresy era termies. The shoulder pads are micro studio arts (I think) and the heads are maxmini. I think. It's expalined in the blog though. Glad youy like them. Of course, now they're 40k era termies wearing relic armor.

22-06-2011, 15:57
It's been a slow week, but I've finished the next white repaint.

Here are the next victims to finish off this squad.

22-06-2011, 20:39
looking stunning fella, the white is very nice and extremely well shaded. looking forward to seeing the completed squad!

22-06-2011, 22:24
Thanks Petay, glad you like them. I'm looking forward to the completed squad too! Three more to go after this squad, but I might squeeze some other projects in between them.

23-06-2011, 07:29
Knocked another one out this evening. Almost done with the squad.

24-06-2011, 12:16
Beautiful stuff, OD, that's the first compliment that crossed my mind when I saw these termies. Are you using Badab Black over white undercoat still? I seem to remember that being your method many pages back.

Also, nice work on the flying thing (I can't remember its name. Stormraven? I'm tired!), it looks very nice.

24-06-2011, 15:13
Wow, you have a great memory. I painted a small DW army using that formula last year. No, in this case, I'm repainting skull white over Chaos black armor.

24-06-2011, 22:42
Wow, you have a great memory. I painted a small DW army using that formula last year. No, in this case, I'm repainting skull white over Chaos black armor.

Well that's time consuming. I know you are repainting the model, but in general I think it would be much easier to paint black wash in recesses and then fix the white on the edges. Still amazing work!

28-06-2011, 23:34
Thanks Wikear. It's not too bad, I just don't have too much time to paint anymore.

Well, the first repainted squad is complete. The last man, the chainfist trooper, has returned from the artificer with a nice new color of armor.

01-07-2011, 04:39
I decided to knock out a Hydra turret I could use on one of my chimera chasis if the need arose.

01-07-2011, 06:25
I brought Belial's armor up to date.

04-07-2011, 16:01
Looking good man. The Heresy Termies are nice.

06-07-2011, 16:01
I painted up an astropath for a game this week. I usually press one of my inquisitor's acolytes into service, but decided the 122nd needed their own psycher. I'll take a better picture of all my advisors once the snow's on his base.

icecream boy
07-07-2011, 12:26
Like the Psyker, kinda Elysian looking.

21-07-2011, 23:47
Thanks Icecream boy.

Well, I'm playing in a tournament with this army later this month, so some fine tuning to my forces was in order.

First, my inquisition chimera got lights repainted and new army markings so it can act as a command chimera. The black armor still works I think, as it is the commander's ride.

I finished up my Hydra battery.

And I rearmed one of my Valkyries, converting it into a second Vendetta.

21-07-2011, 23:51
Next, I had to add some special weapons troops to buff up my command squads. Medics and Vox men out, more firepower in.

And finally, one of my command squads gets a heavy weapons team. The gunner is WIP still, and the snow's missing, but should be done soon.

I should finish before this weekend, and then I'll see about putting together a simple display base/carrying tray.

icecream boy
22-07-2011, 07:06
You picked rather similar poses to my special weapons team =) They look great as usual though, a bit sad there isn't more traffic through here at the moment.

22-07-2011, 15:48
Great minds think alike?

I've never really got the hang of the traffic here. For whatever reason the stuff I do doesn't gather many comments. I've given up trying to figure it out.

22-07-2011, 16:41

I'm saying this as a friend and not to be harsh, but there isn't that much traffic due to the fact that your minis are good but not impressive. There isn't much in the way of conversions or resculpts and your painting is clean but it doesn't really wow people. I like the stuff you post, and have subbed since I found this thread, but I also see why other people might not like it. Again, I'm not trying to be harsh here.

22-07-2011, 18:06
No problem Serraphim, you're probably right. I appreciate you subscribing.

The Heavy Weapons team is complete.

Not sure if I'm goint to put together a tray/base of any kind. Need to lay out the army for the tournie and see how big it is, see what's feasible. If not it'll be back to the ghost squad or Deathwing I'm working on.

22-07-2011, 18:08
Oh, I forgot to congratulate you on Man U's extremely close game with Seattle. I mean that was a nail biter until the end, barely pulled out that win.

22-07-2011, 22:02
Yeah. Poor MLS not looking so good against ManU on this tour so far.

23-07-2011, 13:01
Hey Od, loving the latest update, good to see that great camo scheme again!

23-07-2011, 15:42
Thanks ElTanko.

No. I get what he's saying. Some threads have the worst most dire paintjobs and lots of folks say things like "awesome, great job" but some guys come along with pretty high gaming quality and the amount of comments is less than it should be. Just an observation.

Od, your tanks are good but your troops are even better. I really like the heavy weapon team you just posted. I really like it. Are they Pig Iron Heads?

23-07-2011, 20:46
Thanks Erazmus, I appreciate the explanation and the feedback. It's nice to know I'm not crazy.

They are pig iron heads for the most part, although the combat engineers and penal legion have Weird War 3 heads.

26-07-2011, 01:00
I painted up some objective markers for this weekend.

So here's the 1850pt army I'm taking.

26-07-2011, 16:29
Love the objective markers man!

26-07-2011, 16:50
Thanks razor, they seem tailor made for markers.

27-07-2011, 10:14
Nice. It reminds me, that I have paint some more guardsmens. :D

28-07-2011, 07:39
That's quite a sizable force you've got, have we seen a closer pic of the Valkyries yet?

28-07-2011, 11:39
It looks even better all together, you should be proud!

28-07-2011, 17:16
Thanks guys. The Valks were pictured a long time ago as they were painted. I'll see if I can dig up some pics.

30-07-2011, 12:46
That's certainly an impressive looking army. Nice paint job on all the models you have done in the last 2 months. I really like the phykers cloak, I may have to try and replicate that at some point, need to get off my bum though and put some hobby tie in. Got my daughter today and tomorrow though so prob wont get any hobby time in then :/

01-08-2011, 17:05
Thanks Yayale, hopefully I can inspire you to get painting!

I ended up taking second in the Best Hobby Army out of a field of 80 or so over the weekend. I lost a point for lacking major conversions (like a full scratchbuild) and a point for not having a serious base to pull it all together, neither of which I can argue. I think I'll build a general purpose base for this army should I need one in the future. Overall I was pretty happy and lots of people stopped by to examine the details and ask questions about the army.

02-08-2011, 06:18
Odmiller, that's a damn nice army. Crisp, coherent, unified - and scary to face on the battlefield, too, I'd wager.

Where did you come in the actual game rankings? 2nd out of 80 for Best Army's bloody good, too, you should be proud of that.

02-08-2011, 17:15
Thanks Yayale, hopefully I can inspire you to get painting!

Did John win again?

Jamie, I'm up in No Cal now, there is no John!

Gen. Steiner, I came in 24th out of about 75 or so.

After a great weekend of gaming with these guys I am making some tweaks to my list, and that means a few new miniature additions. I accomplished my goals (a winning record 4-3) and had a chance to play IG against 7 different armies, and this gave me a strong feel for what was working and what wasn't for me.
The Penal Legion Squad is out, as they are the one real unit that underperformed all weekend.

I'm pulling the Las Cannon team out of the Command squad, adding another one and putting them in the infantry squads. These guys never moved for 7 games. This means adding two more flamers into the commands squad.

So, here are the additional las cannon team and the two flamers. I had to green stuff the headgear on the flamers as I was out of the correct style.

Ha! I have a crouching flame-thrower operator too!

Lol. Great minds? That squad'll have two of them I think.

I've attached a quick snap of the two flamer troopers. Now my command squad is filled out.

The heavy weapon team is next.
