Here's the finished Medusa (or other bassie variant). I notice a couple of points to clean up on the shield detail, but otherwise it's complete.

Me too, lol. I'm thinking through how I want to paint the sandbags and las cannons now.
I often find myself thinking the same thing when sat around doing nothing lol :D
Sandbags could look quite nice starting with bestial brown as a shade then snakebit leather, mixing with bleached bone for highlights.

I missed your recipe. It might have worked out better.
Here's a quick post to show I'm still making progress. Better pic next time.
The weapons platforms are done, and I've done the base coat for the uniforms.

What was your recipe for the sandbags?
odmiller
16-11-2010, 19:28
I based them in bleached bone, gave them a black wash, then highlighted back in bleached bone. I generally use a brown wash for bleached bone, but didn't want them to seem too "warm".
Monsterzonk
17-11-2010, 07:49
I really like those weapons teams. They're looking very cool!
Cheers,

odmiller
17-11-2010, 14:36
Thanks Monsterzonk, glad you like them. I'm pretty happy with how they came out.
A brown wash, with a highlight of bleached bone on the edges would probably be enough to make them look less washed out :) Always hard to tell how they would actually look in real life when looking at photo's though.
odmiller
19-11-2010, 21:48
Yeah, agreed. I don't mind them in person.
So, exciting news from my perspective. I just ordered some new Pig Iron Heads, Officer, NCO and radio man heads. Very cool.
This means I'll be going back through the army, and replacing the heads, which in turn will free up some more heads so I can add additional squads down the line.
They're very cool sculpts, and should add even more character to the army. I'm very excited by this find.

I decided to start my Vanquisher while I am waiting for the new heads. This is my Pask commanding.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/vanquisherwip1.jpg
I'm not really a fan of this model, it looks rather ork like with such a big main gun. I think they need to stretch the Lemanruss chasis a bit to make it more in proportion. Waiting with anticipation for your paintjob though, it's always a pleasure to look at your models :)
odmiller
23-11-2010, 15:50
Well, to be fair to GW, this is my conversion. It's a basic Russ with a barrel from the Baneblade. Hopefully the paintjob works well enough that you like the end result.
Ah rite, I hadn't noticed the conversion :D
odmiller
25-11-2010, 06:36
I guess that's a good sign. Sorry about the foreshortened picture. Probably makes the barrel look even worse.
Here's the finished Vanquisher, with it's superstar tank commander.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/vanquisherfinal.jpg
I got the replacement officer/NCO heads I wanted, so I'll start subbing them in over the weekend. I'm pretty excited, they look cool.
odmiller
25-11-2010, 19:58
So, these are the only head swaps I needed to do from painted minis. The basic rule of thumb is units that would expect to be away from the fighting will have the soft headgear. And the Sentinals have little helmets with com beads.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/headswaps.jpg
icecream boy
26-11-2010, 07:06
Great idea with the Vanquisher, I like the use of the Baneblade barrel though I'd have to agree it would be better with an elongated chassis.
The head swaps look good, although for realism All the tank crew would be weraing helmets. Beret's are only worn when on peace keeping missions and the like when there is a low threat as it is less intimidating than wearing helmets. A tank has lots of big moving parts to crack you on the head.
odmiller
26-11-2010, 15:08
Well, you're absolutely correct of course, which is why I made sure they all had helmets in the first place. My thinking has changed a little in line with having some variation in the force for the sake of aesthetics. I still want to have some rules though.
So the Company Command squad will be in soft hats, a peaked cap for the officer and soft hats for his squad. All the tank officers will be in peaked caps, as will be the artillery commanders. Almost everyone else will be in helmets.
Fair enough, the rule of cool alwasy triumphms :)

Thanks guys, glad you like them. I had to take a little break to knock together some terrain. I'm getting in my first game in a long time this weekend, and it's my first non-store game in forever, so I decided to put together some generic sci-fi terrain. Building terrain is not my first love, so it's pretty haphazard and slapdash, but I think it'll do. I'll post pictures later.
odmiller
30-11-2010, 21:16
Head swaps are painted, but they're not really interesting to see online.
Here's the next big project, the body of the infantry platoon.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/platoonwip.jpg
Nice. I see your army factory is working on full capacity. :) My production line is much slower. Btw my first battle with this Guard army will be in Campaign agains Forces of Chaos, but I have to finish it. :)
odmiller
01-12-2010, 15:54
Lol, well, I have a game this weekend, and I only play with painted minis! So, this platoon needs to get to a state where I can play with them. At that point I'll have a 1500pt list as needed. I'll have two tanks, two chimeras, and a penal legion squad that don't make the cut because they're still unpainted.
odmiller
03-12-2010, 19:51
Here's the in progress assembly line. I've made some significant progress. I need to paint the weapons and "special" individual gear (radios, bionics, banner,) and the grey highlights, but everything else is complete. Good enough to get them on the battlefield tomorrow.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/platoonwip2.jpg
Looking good, although some close up shots would be nice to see the details ;)
Have you got any pics of the terrain your working on?
odmiller
05-12-2010, 03:28
Now that they're in a decent state, I'll work on them a squad at a time to finish up, and will take closer pics. I'll try to take some terrain pics too.
odmiller
07-12-2010, 21:42
Well, I've made some progress on finishing up the platoon. Well, it's technically not a platoon, as it's two infantry squads, and then actually the company command squad. Everything is done except the weapons and the basing for everything, and for 9 of the models, the weapons are complete.
Here's what's done (but for the basing). The Company command squad models are in the soft hats.

Nice. I only think these meltas looks a bit big. This is why I will use these from FW. Same as their Shotguns.

Thanks Icecream boy. I appreciate the feedback. The painting's a little more subtle on the banner than normal for me, but it shows up quite well in person while it gets washed out in the picture.

10-12-2010, 22:21
Your Sly Marbo stand in looks great, can we have a sot from the back? I'm finding it hard to pinpoint where the backpack is from at this angle.
I really like the reserved 'come and get me' look you have given him, it's not what you would expect from this character.
odmiller
11-12-2010, 02:02
Sure thing, I'll give you shots from both sides. It's the Vossie sniper with a demo charge attached.
odmiller
11-12-2010, 03:15
Here's Marbo. I noticed the red marks on the grenade needed to be touched up and took care of that. I think the next plan is another vehicle or two, then the Penal Legion, then the last vehicles.

Cheers mate, what a stunning model it is. The chipping is wonderfully simple, as is the freehand I've just noticed.
About your blue undercoat though, is it me or does it look rather thick? It just looks like there's little depth in the creases, that's all. It might just be because of the camo though.

12-12-2010, 08:54
I really like the colour scheme you have used on. The command squad and the banner look great. Look forward to seeing more.
Looks like he has applied a shade to the base colour.
Nice conversion and paint job, not totally sure about the half demo charge on the backpack.

Thanks guys, glad you like them.
The paint on the fatigues is nice and thin. I maybe should have pumped up the contrast with another wash or highlights, considering he's a special character. The demo charge is a necessity unfortunately for Marbo. I think it looks decent in person.

14-12-2010, 18:17
I'm going to take a group picture of everything in this army this coming weekend as I have a big game that will allow me to field everything and give a nicer setting for pictures.
Sooo, I've started on the last vehicles. Certain elements I'll paint assembly line style, then I'll complete each individually. Here are the vehicle commanders. The helmeted ones are the Chimera commanders, while the other two are tankers.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/vehiclecommanders.jpg
I think I'll do all four turrets next.

Looking really good, how do you pump out so much stuff so quickly?
odmiller
15-12-2010, 06:38
Thanks guys. I have two secrets right now.
1. I don't play video games. In my personal time, I paint. My wife goes to sleep between 10 and 11 and that gives me 2 to 3 hours a night to paint.
2. I make sure to do something every day. Even if it's minor, like basing some minis or getting something primed, I can't rest until I've done something.
All this will change, as I start my MBA program in January. It's all evenings, and my free time is going to drop to near zero.
Which comes to the third secret. Have a deadline. This army has to be done, for all intents and purposes, before school starts again.
That's some proper discipline. Do you ever get the attack of mojolessness?
but Good luck on the MBA,
Great consistent work on the minis.

16-12-2010, 18:32
Thanks Xepher. In order to keep focused, I read a lot of the black library stuff. Aside from keeping current as new stuff comes out, I've reread the entire Cain series while working on this project. Keeps a nice IG focus!
Here's a big update. The last of the vehicles! I went nuts and painted 4 tanks in the last few days.
First, two Russes, a Punisher and a Standard Russ.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/tworusses.jpg
Then, two Chinmeras for my Infantry Squads.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/twochimeras.jpg
And finally, here's a shot of the army so far awaiting deployment. I'll have a picture of it all together on the tabletop this weekend.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/cadian122almostdone.jpg
The only remaining unit for the Cadian 122nd as initially planned is the penal legion squad. We'll see where we go after they're done.
Thats one hell of an army Odmiller. Lots of time, money and effort. Well worth it!

16-12-2010, 19:38
Thanks El Tanko. As far as the money goes, I didn't notice it. The vehicles are all things I collected over the years, or traded other stuff for. Nothing new was purchased, all the newer stuff I made with conversions. The guys are the same thing, stuff I've had for years in various states, or recieved in trades over time. The only new purchases for this army were heads.
Nice view to see whole army. Great work. :)

Thanks TomG.
So, as I started work on the penal legion squad, I realized how much I really, really, really hate the Catachan models. Everything about them is bad. And, the squad as it progressed on the assembly line was not making me feel any better.
So, I decided to finish one guy up as a test paint. Although the model still has a ton of flaws, the finished paint scheme actually looks decent, so I think I'll finish them up.
These models are at least a decade old, and have been through multiple owners and paintings. The parts are the scrapings at the bottom of my bits box, as I'm certainly not buying any catachans, so you'll have to forgive some of the rough edges.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/penaltest1jpg.jpg
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/penaltest2.jpg
Catachans will be good for custom servitors as seen here on warseer, but nothing more.
Gen.Steiner
17-12-2010, 10:20
In defence of the plastic 'Chans, if you are aware that they're not the Perry twins' best, you can make some nice models with them IMO. It is advisable not to use second-hand models for the task though! :p
Interesting penal trooper ODM, where's the helmet from? Pig Iron or WWind?
Haven't new catachan models been released fairly recently? They may be a lot better than the one you have.
odmiller
17-12-2010, 15:29
Thanks guys. All they did with the new release was add a plastic command squad. I used some of the parts on my marbo, but there's not a lot else. Anyway, I like the test paint enugh to see them through and finish up the whole army project properly.
icecream boy
17-12-2010, 22:40
I quite like the penal trooper, the only thing wrong with it is the arms IMO. I think it's the alternate paint scheme that does the trick.

Interesting penal trooper ODM, where's the helmet from? Pig Iron or WWind? the helmets for these guys are from a set of alternate WW2 heads, weird war 2 I think. Don't know who makes them, picked them up one time a year ago. I always grab interesting bits for future projects, but forget where they came from when the time comes.

20-12-2010, 20:12
So, I got to field my entire army in a 2500 pt game vs. Dark Eldar last night. These guys made up 2250 of it, and I added a squad of Arbites (Vets) in a Chimera to round out the 2500, as well as an astropath. It made a little fluff sense as the Arbites and the Cadian 122nd stood shoulder to shoulder during the battle for Vogen.
Anyway. The mission was capture and control.
Here was the start of the game. My opponent had first turn, and I kept quite a lot of my forces off the table - Marbo, sentinals, penal legion, vets (arbites) in Chimera, and vets on foot. The two infantry squads are in the chimeras on the left.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/br1.jpg
Immediately you can see he started damaging my tanks. My general plan was to keep enough vehicles to act as a screen and make it hard for his units to get to my home base, and to have the firepower to kill the ones that did get through, while I ran the infantry in the chimeras out into no man’s land.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/br2.jpg
Here you can see a little of my plan working as a chimera full of veterans, penal legion, and a couple of sentinals race for his base. In the end, he wiped the last troops off my base in turn five, but neither of us had troops to claim, and I unloaded got a veteran’s squad into his base to contest at the same time. A draw! Lots of casualties on both sides, lots of fun.

I was thinking this before, but didn't want to offend them... They look like they could snap me in half with their pinkies.

21-12-2010, 17:16
Exactly.
A few years ago a gaming club cast up parts to convert female IG. The cadians are very good, and are mixed into my other squads. The catachans were a tougher prospect, and a lot of the parts aren't really usable because they just aren't good enough. However, I've managed to salvage a couple for this squad. They are obviously way too huge and ripped, but then again, so are the rest of the catachans. They are all insanely muscled.
Soooo, I've decided that the penal legion soldiers get a regular dose of steroids in their diet to make them hardier and more reckless.
odmiller

Here's my quick return to the ranks of the DA. I had a Librarian in termie armor sitting around unpainted, sooo, here he is.
Not sure what the next plan is. I've got both DA and IG stuff I can do, but I'm up in the air a bit as I get the bug one way, then the other.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/termielibrarian.jpg
hmm.. not sure about this one. I like the paint job but I don't like the amount of grass on the base, there's too much of it. I like my bases burnt and rubley. But that's me.
Why is his armour blue though?
odmiller
03-01-2011, 21:15
He's a Librarian, thus the blue. I"ll make sure I tone down the grass in the future!

Sorry for a stupid question :D
icecream boy
03-01-2011, 22:49
I don't mind the amount of grass personally, but I think what the problem is lies with the way its been applied. I'm not sure if you know, but when the glue is drying, blowing on it can cause it to stand on its end thus looking more natural.

Hm. ODM why you have moldline on this poweraxe? ;)

also not applying with your fingers. use sth to pick it up and then throw it on the base or even pluck it in. NEVER use fingers and NEVER dip the base in the grass pot... that's my way of applying static grass. Also blowing when it is drying, great tip!
odmiller
06-01-2011, 07:30
Another good tip. The grass on the biker base should be better.
So here's the next Ravenwing update. I've painted the base metal areas, and added the washes. Next step, highlight the metals. Then it's the black edges, then the details.

I've also been undergoing a massive cleanup of my DA minis. All power weapons and melta coils lost the green tint, and all plasma weapons changed to a blue tint. Makes me much happier. I have a rough plan to go and update each squad with highlights, etc, but that's a longer term project. We'll see.

Well, after a month or so of real life, I'm back for a little addition to the boys in green. I decided I needed another tactical squad, and that some Black Reach marines I had lying around would do the job perfectly.
So, here they are assembled. I'm still deciding whether they should be DA or a successor. I already have one successor squad in the army, and my veterans are all mixed, so another squad might be neat. However, adding another DA squad would help me bulk out the 4th company, past the halfway mark.
If I get some momentum, I have a bit more to follow these guys, however, no word on that until they're complete.

I painted up an astropath for a game this week. I usually press one of my inquisitor's acolytes into service, but decided the 122nd needed their own psycher. I'll take a better picture of all my advisors once the snow's on his base.

Thanks Icecream boy.
Well, I'm playing in a tournament with this army later this month, so some fine tuning to my forces was in order.
First, my inquisition chimera got lights repainted and new army markings so it can act as a command chimera. The black armor still works I think, as it is the commander's ride.

I finished up my Hydra battery.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/hydrabattery.jpg
And I rearmed one of my Valkyries, converting it into a second Vendetta.

Next, I had to add some special weapons troops to buff up my command squads. Medics and Vox men out, more firepower in.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/specialweaponsadded.jpg
And finally, one of my command squads gets a heavy weapons team. The gunner is WIP still, and the snow's missing, but should be done soon.
http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wiphwcrew.jpg
I should finish before this weekend, and then I'll see about putting together a simple display base/carrying tray.

You picked rather similar poses to my special weapons team =) They look great as usual though, a bit sad there isn't more traffic through here at the moment.

Great minds think alike?
I've never really got the hang of the traffic here. For whatever reason the stuff I do doesn't gather many comments. I've given up trying to figure it out.

I'm saying this as a friend and not to be harsh, but there isn't that much traffic due to the fact that your minis are good but not impressive. There isn't much in the way of conversions or resculpts and your painting is clean but it doesn't really wow people. I like the stuff you post, and have subbed since I found this thread, but I also see why other people might not like it. Again, I'm not trying to be harsh here.

No problem Serraphim, you're probably right. I appreciate you subscribing.
The Heavy Weapons team is complete.

Not sure if I'm goint to put together a tray/base of any kind. Need to lay out the army for the tournie and see how big it is, see what's feasible. If not it'll be back to the ghost squad or Deathwing I'm working on.

Oh, I forgot to congratulate you on Man U's extremely close game with Seattle. I mean that was a nail biter until the end, barely pulled out that win.

Yeah. Poor MLS not looking so good against ManU on this tour so far.
Hey Od, loving the latest update, good to see that great camo scheme again!

No. I get what he's saying. Some threads have the worst most dire paintjobs and lots of folks say things like "awesome, great job" but some guys come along with pretty high gaming quality and the amount of comments is less than it should be. Just an observation.
Od, your tanks are good but your troops are even better. I really like the heavy weapon team you just posted. I really like it. Are they Pig Iron Heads?

Thanks Erazmus, I appreciate the explanation and the feedback. It's nice to know I'm not crazy.
They are pig iron heads for the most part, although the combat engineers and penal legion have Weird War 3 heads.

Thanks guys. The Valks were pictured a long time ago as they were painted. I'll see if I can dig up some pics.
That's certainly an impressive looking army. Nice paint job on all the models you have done in the last 2 months. I really like the phykers cloak, I may have to try and replicate that at some point, need to get off my bum though and put some hobby tie in. Got my daughter today and tomorrow though so prob wont get any hobby time in then :/

Thanks Yayale, hopefully I can inspire you to get painting!
I ended up taking second in the Best Hobby Army out of a field of 80 or so over the weekend. I lost a point for lacking major conversions (like a full scratchbuild) and a point for not having a serious base to pull it all together, neither of which I can argue. I think I'll build a general purpose base for this army should I need one in the future. Overall I was pretty happy and lots of people stopped by to examine the details and ask questions about the army.

Odmiller, that's a damn nice army. Crisp, coherent, unified - and scary to face on the battlefield, too, I'd wager.
Where did you come in the actual game rankings? 2nd out of 80 for Best Army's bloody good, too, you should be proud of that.

Did John win again?

Jamie, I'm up in No Cal now, there is no John!
Gen. Steiner, I came in 24th out of about 75 or so.
After a great weekend of gaming with these guys I am making some tweaks to my list, and that means a few new miniature additions. I accomplished my goals (a winning record 4-3) and had a chance to play IG against 7 different armies, and this gave me a strong feel for what was working and what wasn't for me.
The Penal Legion Squad is out, as they are the one real unit that underperformed all weekend.
I'm pulling the Las Cannon team out of the Command squad, adding another one and putting them in the infantry squads. These guys never moved for 7 games. This means adding two more flamers into the commands squad.
So, here are the additional las cannon team and the two flamers. I had to green stuff the headgear on the flamers as I was out of the correct style.

I've attached a quick snap of the two flamer troopers. Now my command squad is filled out.
The heavy weapon team is next.
