I have a lot of 40k projects I work in the cracks in my Bretonnian Fantasy Army painting schedule. I decided I should keep track of them here.

Here you'll find mostly IG and DA stuff.

The first entry will be a female IG squad for my IG force. Here are the assembled minis with the GS cleanup.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/femalesquad1.gif

Here's my progress so far. I was most interested in how the heads would paint up, as if they fail, the whole mini fails. So, here the girls are, heads complete.

Since I'm happy with the faces, I'll get working on the rest of the bodies ASAP.

Awesome idea! The berets are a very nice touch, very femenine. Why are the bodies that white colour? Looking forward to more progress.

The casts are from a gaming group I belong to, not for sale.

Thanks for the kind words guys, glad you like them. The Sculptor was very good, the casting left something to be desired, but it's not professional so there's only so much that can be expected..

I agree ForgeWorld could really do a great job with their talent levels. I've never understood why GW or FW don't just put one female body on each sprue.

The best thing is the finished models fit right into my existing army.

I like these models a lot... Does only the Inquisition use females in battle?

odmiller
06-07-2007, 23:11
Ahh, my whole army, the 304th Cadian Mechanized Brigade, has been seconded to the Inquisition, but they still fight most often as a Guard formation.

Nice female guard, there isnt enough mixed gender guard regiments about these days, and especially as nearly all the books about guard are about regiments that are mixed and have women in. Nice scupts

I don't know any of the casting info. The guy to ask is Dr. Thunder on these forums. He will know more details.

Thought I'd revive this for an update on some 40k stuff, this time a Deathwing squad.

Here's the position they were in sitting on their shelf, making me feel guilty for working on fantasy...

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/termieip.gif

Here's the update after a couple of days' work.

The blacks are done, the greens, and the reds. The bone colors are basecoated and the golds are still not started.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/termieip2.gif

The next step is to base coat the golds, give the bone and golds a brown wash, then go back in and highlight, hitting certain details like nail heads and campaign marking last.

After these guys are done, I have a Belial to convert, his command squad to build and paint, and then finally an inherited landraider to clean up, bling up, and paint.

That's all in between my IG army updates and my Fantasy Bretonnian painting.

arenīt deathwings armor bone white? or is this a pre-heresy amry?:p

Lol, I have to explain this every time I show them. After the Heresy the Deathwing stayed in black armor like the Ravenwing. Some thousands (3-7) of years later, they changed to white armor after the Plains World incident. That gives us thousands of years post Heresy where the Deathwing had Black armor. So my army is from some time in the past but not 10,000 years ago.

As an update, got all metallics done tonight, and the wash on the bone stuff. Campaign badges also done. Will try and highlight the bone areas tomorrow, then finish the bases and seal them. Pics tomorrow no matter where I end up, but hopefully the finished squad.

I got the work done on my Belial today. Just need to sand the green stuff hood and base him, but I'll do the basing last. I've gone pretty straight forward, DA bitz on the Termie Captain, however, I've always liked the model. A raised base will give him the stature he needs I think.

Here's my next project, a Deathwing Command Squad. First step done, cutting and shaping the minis together. From the left, LC termie, Sgt, Apothecary, Assault Cannon, and then Standard Bearer.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/termiecmndwip.gif

Tonight, I'll be greenstuffing the cracks and joins where the parts don't match. Then on go the arms and the various bitz from the DA sprue. I'm planning to have them all complete and painted in the next 10 days or so.

Here's tonight's work. I GS'd the seams and cracks, and finished construction.

Thanks Jasevx. These guys are my "quick paint" army, so the highlights are way more stark, but often times that actually looks better on the table.

odmiller
17-08-2007, 17:59
Thought I'd add a paint scheme for my IG -

As this is my "tabletop" army, I went for a stark striking highlight regimen that would look good on the table.

Everything is two tone with no blending.

Greys -
Codex Grey base
Space Wolves Grey Highlights

Browns -
Scorched base
Snakebite Leather highlights

Reds -
Red Gore Base
Blood Red Highlights

Greens -
DA Green Base
Goblin Green Highlights

Blacks -
Chaos Black Base
Codex Grey Highlights

Then finally, all glass areas got a white highlight on top. Viola.

DK

The gas masks are just a blob of greenstuff, shaped with a wet exacto knife, Taking your time and keep the blade wet. The little knobs were put on the next day, sothe mask could firm up enough to have the knobs pressed on without warping.

The DW bases are GW gravel, primed, then drybrushed Codex Grey then spacewolves grey.

It's been a while since I posted, but I haven't been idle.

I was working on some RW bikers, and finished the metal parts..

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/rwsdrnwip1.gif

But I have been co-opted into doing an Apocolypse Demo with my IG army, so I have done some work on it first. I added another sentinal to finish my squadron.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/sentinalsqd1.gif

And I have started work on my old armorcast baneblade. Base painting is done, next step, adding the dust and weathering to dirty it up.

Sure thing, I'll take some individual pics of the DW Command Squad next time the camera is out this weekend..

My IG army is my "tabletop" force, simple clean scheme for faster, assembly line painting.

My DA army is my "display" army, although I still sacrifice in some areas to make sure I actually get things done. The army still has to hit the field painted, I hate fielding non-painted stuff.

My local store is having a painting competition with some pretty great prizes, so I'll post up pics as I go with my first "for display only" paintjob in a long time. We'll see how that comes out, everyone's doing Saint Celestine, so it's a pretty cool model.

I use a rather limited pallete because I am a cheapscape. Lots of colors have to de double duty.

The bone is painted flat over black. Then, I use scorched brown to give it a wash, like an ink wash, but with paint. Then I go back with the bone to highlight.

Scorched Brown is the color for the base trim.

That's great to hear, I'm glad you like them. I like the way the DA play. They're probably not a great tournament army, but their cool rules and formations make them a lot of fun in regular game. You really can play the army a lot of very different ways. I had two very suprised opponents last night facing a "Wing" army.

Well, before making DA progress, I wanted to get my IG in the same state: painted - everything built painted.

I painted three more sentinals to give me 6 las cannon tank hunting sentinals. I have my Armorcast Shadowsword to paint, then it's only stuff to build.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/sentinals.gif

Stuff still in the box: another leman russ, a basilisk, some infantry, and.......a new BaneBlade!

It's very hard not to jump to the new stuff I have until I finish the painting of what's built. Help me be strong!

odmiller
14-10-2007, 16:40
The snow's just for variation. My IG army in all in a snowy urban theme.

I didn't modernize the baneblade because I didn't know the weapon loadout (don't have IA and didn't have a way to play it - it was just for display) until I got Apaocolypse.

However, I haven't have any problems from opponents if I just use it as counts as a real baneblade. Same thing for my shadowsword when it's painted. The only rules I have for superheavies is Apoc, so
i will count it as a Hellhammer until more datasheets are published.

:)Actually, I split the box. It worked out well, as I had one painted and the second DA master mini already, so I just needed two of the new ones. Add a few DA bits, a little mix and match, and viola!

I love this log, its looking great.

3 questions though:
1. how do you paint black? I cant ever get mine to look that good
2. What are the robes on the second termie squad? from the DW box or the BT box?
3. The female Ig, are they simply male ig bodies + female bits, or are the bodies in general more slender? if its only the prior i may work at modeling some via greenstuff

Love this, keep it up!

Glad you like them.

The black for the marines is Chaos Black with a codex gray drybrush. Then I give the entire piece a blackwash to tone down the highlights. Then I use diluted black to clean up the drybrush residue from any large flat surfaces.

After a Matte Varnish, my marines get a light spray of gloss varnish. It makes the overall armor effect more to the way I want them. My IG stays Matte, but the marines need a little more shine.

2. The command squad's robes are all from the BT box with hooded heads from the new DA box.

3. The female IG bodies and heads are cast by a gaming group. Here's a link.

Well, I may have been getting ahead of myself with the Masters of the Chapter. I just realized I have only two weeks before a big Apocalypse game I need my IG for.

This means my BaneBlade needs to take top priority on the painting table. I built it over the weekend, and primed it this morning. I'll get WIP pics up tonight.

By the way, the tank is a joy to build for anyone who hasn't yet.

I don't have one yet. And it will take a while before I get one. First I will try to paint through all the stuff that is left before I buy some new goodies.

And how can a person hope to encourage a servitor? They aren't human anymore, so how would affect it then? Just love your work.

The Imperium held for the 4 turns we played. The Hellhammer, helped kill one squiggoth turn 1, wiped out a 30 ork squad and helped finish the second squiggoth turn 2, killed a DE beastie turn 3, and wiped out 1/3 of the DE army turn 4.

It, and the baneblade, performed very well.

What do you think was better; the Hellhammer or the Baneblade...? I havnt decided which to do yet.

Well, to be fair, it was in a cityfight against DE and Orks, the exact type of game the hellhammer's made for. It never got to fire its short range side sponsons, while the baneblade obviously did. If you don't have either, I would go for the baneblade, but for being a bit different and standing out, the hallhammer's the one. I do like the look of the hellhammer.

Well, I'm resurrecting this thread as I've finished my fantasy army, and am back in 40k mode.

This will mostly be Dark Angels stuff, as I first have my Master of the Ravenwing to paint, and then I'll be working on adding units I need to my standing DA army for GT later this year. However, I'm sure some IG or Inquisition stuff will sneak in from time to time!

So, pic for tonight, my WIP MotRW. First off, I have to say how much I love this model. I've been waiting to get to it for months as I made myself focus on finishing my Fantasy army first, and boy was the wait worth it.

I still have all the black areas to touchup and highlight, and also his shoulderpads and a little more on the bike console. If all goes well I can finish that stuff tomorrow night. After that, it's the cloak, and then done.

Beleive me its not intentional, i don't like compliments, their seedy things, all nice and smiley...

like ultramarines, compliments are very common, but there are very few with any actual uses or point to them. However, there are a certain number of logs worth these useful comments.

One minor painter note though, the cloak of the ravenwing would do with a touch up, it seems to be a bit two tonal, maybe a washed down bleach bone over the edges so the inking is less obvious?

Thanks Tiller5, glad you like them. I don't think it's any fault of your own you haven't seen my stuff. I had shut 40k down for a few months to finish my fantasy army, and just started reposting here again.

Thought I'd post an update. It took me a couple of days to recover from my trip, but I got a bit of work done today. All done except for the silver parts and the icons.

I was just a visitor. I had wanted to get there well before the tournament started but it was not meant to be, then I got called into work almost as soon as I did walked in the doors. :cries: I barely got to see any of the armies. The place was too packed for me to get any shots in or to look at the armies in the inner tables without interrupting the games.

On to the next project. I was inspired a couple of months ago by a thread painting old IG in the Necromundian color scheme from RT days.

My exisiting Guard army is getting redesignated as the Necromundian 8th, the Spiders. I'll be doing some touch ups, and adding the new unit markings, as modified to fit with the current wargear. I've done a test model and should have pics tonight.

odmiller

I have about 4000 painted pts of IG that I will be updating from a nondescript gray to Alpha Company of the the Necromundian 8th, the Spiders.

I was inspired by another thread a few months ago using the old RT models.

I've decided to drop some of the old RT era markings, and modify others. I've decided that when the Necromundian Regiments received their new gear, some changes were made.

I am playing in an escalation campaign starting in a couple of weeks, so there will be some method to my unit selection, as I want to only field the new elements.

Here's a shot of my first two updated elements. In the front you see the 1st platoon command squad, and in the back, a Veteran Squad.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/8thnecrowip.gif

Aside from unit markings, each soldier has a facial "chevron" tattoo. The vehicles will have Spider markings, etc.

Finally got back to my IG after some other projects. I've finished updating the other tanks to the Necro scheme, but it's not that exciting, so i won't take pics.

My next project it to bring a second platoon up to date. First I need to complete the last 5 in the squad. You can see that the first 5 have had the update, and now the second five are built.

Here's a picture of one of the projects that sidetracked my Necromundian retrofit.

This is Veteran Sgt Dercius from the 2nd Company Command Squad. I did him for a local painting comp, which had to use a majority of parts from the plastic commander box. I alo wanted to see if I liked painting ultramarines enough to make them a new space marine army.

Here's a pic of my Hellhammer after the retrofit. I decided the 8th had its own attached tank units, which probably isn't correct, but what the hell. You can see the facial tattoo of a local boy done good, as well as the Spider markings and 8th Necro Regimental ID.

http://odmiller.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/8thnecrohellhammercu.gif

Finally, here's the next 5 grunts afterbeing based. I'll get them primed today. As you can see I've decided the 8th is a mixed regiment. All those Escher gangers that get rounded up have to go somewhere!

This army's really very attractive. The dark colour scheme and the slick execution very seriously make me consider starting a Guard army! As an old Necromunda player, the fact that the "Spiders" has been revived is something I like very much.

Keep up the good work, ODM!

Glad to make an old Necromunda player happy. I picked up the old RT era WD compendium again, which has a wealth of info on the old guard formations and paint schemes, and also some cool units to add. I used to have all this stuff, but I got rid of everything over a decade ago so it's kind of cool rediscovering all the fluff.

I think I'm going to add a special weapons squad made of penal legion troopers down the road. I've figured out how I'm going to put them together and paint the uniforms already, now it's just to put the concept in the project queue.
