Two questions about the Hammer of the Emperor...

1. How many different Guard "types" (Mordian, Cadian, Catachan, Vostroyans, etc) are represented in Epic?

2. Is Guard a good, competitive Epic army?

Second question first - Guard are a very competitive army. With the amount of different formations available you can make lots of different armies.

First question - Officially there are two Guard lists - Steel Legion from Epic Armageddon and Baran Siegemasters from Swordwind. As far as I know there are various other lists being worked on by fans for Catachan, Ellysian, Tallarn and Minervian regiments.

2. IG steel legion is one of the most balanced army lists. Only Orks are better in that sense. So it is as competitive as others. Baran Siegemasters are a bit too good and need a bit downgrade (suggestions are in that link above, by The_Real_Chris army champion).

IG List in Development are (names are more descriptive than actual names):
Krieg Death Korp Siegebreakers
Cadian Strike/Defense Force (2 list atm)
Elysian Airborne Regiment
Minervian Armored Regiment
Catachan Jungle Fighters (have not seen any length discussion on them)

Tallarn are no longer a list at the moment because the Minervian's replaced them.

The biggest problem is that for all this variety 1 infantry mini type is available from GW.
