Cheers, mate! I've got eight of these O'Trojans to do in total. I hope to have the command variant undercoated some time tomorrow.

Didn't get round to undercoating the command variant, but I promise I have been busy. Three Russ (sans turrets) are outside, partway through having a three-colour camo applied (green, red oxide and cream) - pics of them tomorrow, probably. For now make do with a couple of Hellhounds that have had this red oxide, grey, regal blue camo scheme.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Hellhound1.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Hellhound2.jpg

And the Support Command has had her side detailing done - except hinges and handles for the engine access panels - she'll get them tomorrow together with the front suspension doodah.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Support17.jpg

There's a nother Griffon receiving attention - has received the side bit, the holepunched circles, and now needs rivets.

And last of all three vehicles from a Chimaera-hulled Russ company. No sponsons, I'm afraid, chaps.

dude you is insane:wtf:;)

you must have 300 tanks by now?? :D

i must say the paint colors scheme looks good.
i dislike the way its painted on, looks like you dipped it fully in paint and then left it to dry..

i see black/grey/white under all the tracks, recesses, edges etc etc.
it doesn,t look that cool that way.

don,t get me wrong i like they way you make your models, you must have 20 regiments by now but so far i don,t like the paintjobs.(my opinion)

MrP
24-08-2008, 21:58
I can't really disagree, old man. I'm more a converter than I am a painter, it must be said! I haven't managed to find a way I like of painting vehicles in almost ten years . . . so I doubt I'll improve much before I die! ;)

I promise I'll be trying to fill in all the missing bits - I often don't notice them until they come out in the photographs!

Faolan

Well, the key is to start with a solid cover of your black or dark grey base, and work from there.

Seeing the black under the tracks or in cracks you can't get to isn't so bad once you've weathered the tank, the areas will tend to pick up the wash colours and look more natural.

You just have to, you know, wash 'em.

Also one thing I'd recommend is perhaps masking off the areas you want to put the stowage so you have a little clean, paintless area, and leaving them off till the tank is done being painted (minus the washing), that way you get fewer areas that are hard to paint and likely to get missed, and it's easier to paint the bedrolls, etc as well.

MrP
25-08-2008, 21:54
Well, it's bare plasticard in white that's the main problem in the above ones, I'd say. I know the black's a bit of a mess, but that's a heavy black wash which is an attempt to dull the colours, unify them and make the vehicle look a bit grubby. It certainly won't be staying like that in the end.

I'm sorry to say I can't really take the advice about leaving stowage off until the end, because I've got a backlog of vehicles with stowage already applied. I'll try to remember for any future vehicles I assemble!

I've got a nicer three-colour camo for a trio of Russes: red oxide, Ford Escort (IIRC) green and Lada cream - yes, I popped down to Halford's! I haven't done anything to dull the very glossy finish yet, so I'll try a lighter brown wash this time, not black. I think I probably should have used green as the main colour, not cream, but it still looks ok to me!

indeed: use black primer it looks better under the green(youll get a deeper color without making it much darker), and use white primer under the red paint.

paint everything nice and tidy, and if you are not that good in painting(i,am one of those people too) than forget all the advices about weathering and all that stuff.
it would only ruin the paintjob.
give it then the ''plastic toy'' look instead of the ''i fell down the stairs into a pot of paint'' look.
and when you have that solid plastic toy look, THEN go into detailing it with maybe SOME weathering(chipped paint(not too much), a few small mud splashes on the tracks and the underside of the tank(not too much),maybe a little rust effect with some bright orange and dark brown mix)
but in either way let it just be painted nicely, maybe its not tabletop quality then ,but hee if its painted even and flat its good also.

give those spare rockets in that chimera just a silver coat and a perfect bright red head. they won,t survive that long anyways so why weather them??

what i use??
i use metal colors and black fineliner/ filtpen,s/markers and i color the recesses, lines between armour plates and shadowy parts in black with those pen,s.
you could do the same, those fineliner markers are everywere and come in almost every color.
big problem for you is that you use bright colors, they look cool but are not as forgiving as darker colors.

so you used green than make it a flat color green all even and good (thin down the paint properly, use multiple layers or use a spraygun) and then go with the fineliner dark green or something. to make it look good.

you can do 2 things, get depth tru brighter colors around the recesses or use darker colors INTO the recesses.

besides you could use the gw washes also, thin them down and let it flow into those recesses.

and the last point: if you thought you are finished painting the vehicle. than use a very bright ledlight on the surface of the paint, let it shine and watch everything that you,ve missed.

to sum up the things i do and don,t do:

-don,t weather
-don,t use white primer under green paint
-do use markers/fineliners
-do use washes
-do use spraycans from tamiya

maybe there are some tips you could use.

i,am sure it would look much better than so far.:)

keep up the good work.

Washing is always easy... same with using those wood-stain things. Not to mention drybrushing...

But your painting is fine IMO. lol. Your conversion/scratchbuilding capabilities on the other hand... I bow to you for those are some Godly skills!

Yeah, basically, make sure you get a solid basecoat down of black (or even silver or the like if you're using an airbrush and feel comfortable with it).

Just get some fairly thin, cheap black from the hardware shop, then test it on your plasticard or a spare piece of plastic. Once you know its safe and not too thick, run with that for everything - it's cheaper than Tamiya or Testors black, and FAR cheaper than the GW stuff.

Then, as it was mentioned, you'll have fuller, more bodied colours under it and you won't look so pea-green for so long.

And yes, don't chisel off the existing stowage, just keep it in mind for future builds.

Last thing- I'd get some of the Gunze Steel Red colour for the tracks, it's excellent for metal tracks that are constantly in use!

MrP
26-08-2008, 23:13
Yeah, I've been using primers and sprays from B&Q for ages now. Missing bits and bobs is either my eyes being useless or it being tiny areas that it's difficult to hit. Just inside the track guards or that piston bit are buggers! I often don't notice stuff until I photograph it. I ten to fix the problem areas at once, but don't bother taking new pics to show it! I'll try to be more exacting next time.

No photos tonight. A Hellhound and three turrets are outside drying, and I've been applying rivets to Griffons all evening. About 336 done, and 112 to go. Essential but very dull work. And not the most interesting subject for photography either.

I'll make sure to do that with the next ones - apart from the few with tracks on, of course!

Hey Mrp It looks great keep up the great work, Have you ever looked at how many points you can feild for a game. I was just wondering could You be one side of a games day maga battle?

Cheers, man! Yeah, it's about 30,000 points, including infantry, artillery and vehicles yet to be built. In terms of built stuff it's about 15-20,000.

I've been working on getting together bits for 9 Bassies tonight . . . and inevitably sliced off half a fingertip! So I'll be taking an enforced break for a few hours. ;)

MrP
31-08-2008, 04:34
Right, a lot of the time it seems that I'm doing nowt. And sometimes it feels that way, too! But it usually is truer to say that I'm working on a billion things at once, so no single vehicle moves forward at an appreciable rate. So wih that in mind I've taken pictures of about a third to half of my WIPs to give a sense of why I seem so slow!

First up, something partially undercoated - yes, I'm going to go back and fill in the gaps!

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Support18.jpg

Second, er, something. I had a spare Russ bottom plate, rear Basilisk angled plate, two sides and decided to stick them all together. I think she might end up as a Command Chimaera for an artillery battery. For now, however, she's just Something.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Something.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Something2.jpg

And here's Hellhound #3. Very early PIP. I don't like the shiny metallic black at all; it isn't just the flash!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Hellhound3.jpg

The tiny bits of white fluff on everything are filed plasticard - the only way to get the lovely rounded edges on the flanks.

MrP
31-08-2008, 04:42
Now, I'm forever claiming to be working on two companies of Bassies, but when does one ever see the proof? Now. The sides for 9 are here (7 assembled, 2 awaiting 1 cm of junk plasticard to bulk them out.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Bassies1.jpg

And here's what'll be another Command Chimaera for the arty.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/CommandChi1.jpg

If she looks skewiff, that's because she is. The top part of the Chimaera is awfully bent, and at the time I first assembled it, some years ago, IIRC, I didn't have any success in reshaping it gently with hot water.

Next are a trio of Russes. I think I'm using these as Conquerors. Turrets have already been painted and shown, I believe, so these are the hulls.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Russes5.jpg

I decided to move the HBs forward partly because I prefer the look, partly because it gives more space aft of the sponsons for hatches and not really at all because measurements are made from weapons. Though that is a handy side-effect that'll give me an inch or so more range! ;)

MrP
31-08-2008, 04:45
There's going to be a squadron of these chaps when they're all finally done. The other two are at an earlier stage.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Russes6.jpg

But they do have sponsons, although the sides to which they're affixed are in sore need of detailing.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Russes7.jpg

In addition to the above, I have a planned company of ten scratch Russes (I think there are five in shell form atm. Here are three.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Russes8.jpg

Obviously, there's plenty to do there!

MrP
31-08-2008, 04:48
They've got turrets waiting for them, of course.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Russes9.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Russes10.jpg

I've still got to set up the arrangement to secure the turrets to the hulls. If I'd thought ahead, I'd've done this before closing off the hull interior, but I'm not. So it's likely to be some sort of arrangement akin to the standard Chimaera.

Right, that's enough to demonstrate why I never get much done, I hope!

Mr. P, I believe you have an unnerving and unnatural ability to mass produce armored vehicles.
At some point in the future, I'm sure we will find out that you have made some unholy alliance or
have a dozen adopted children lock in a basement and forced to build armor.
For the good of everyone, I will be watching you.....Very closely.

Surely not! People miss children. I've been making away with adults instead. ;)

Apologies for the long hiatus, and apologies for the fact that there'll probably be just as lengthy a one before I post much more. I've been accepted for an MA in British First World War Studies at Birmingham, so I've been reading up, and have had (and will have) too little time for much else. However, I have done some work on the Something. I decided to make her a Command Chimaera for an Arty Coy, so she'll have assorted antennae and whatnot in a while. For now, though -

that must be the hydra AA chimera. ;)

but the barrels are way too thick to be autocannons.
they look 100% like 12 stygies pattern vanquisher cannon barrels. :)

so my guess was since your not making 12 vanquishers leman russes
that your making 6 vanquisher macharius tanks.
but you said 3 smaller vehicles so it must be the hydra.:p

why not making more superheavy,s?? you and your skills are so great that why build 400 small vehicles if you could make 100 superheavy,s???? :D

Well deduced, old man! Ah, I promise they're not very outsize - although I agree they are a bit. But the Hydra Autocannons look substantially chunkier than IG infantry ones, anyway. Here's a comparison shot.

Cheers, fellas! Very well, when next I have time, a super it will be! Although perhaps an unusual one . . . Thankee, Faolan! I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Right, no updates this week, as I'm off to Wales today, and will be in Ireland Monday to Thursday, reminiscing with friends about when we were all young, at uni and the whole of life was ahead of us. Er, about 7 years ago, then. ;) Cheerio!

No work done on the planned Super, but I have a test turret for it. These guns have not and will not be affixed. I'll make some others more suited to the turret tomorrow.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/TestTurret1.jpg

The turrets for the model itself will be a bit larger.

Having made this turret, I don't know what the hell I'll actually do with it!

razormasticator

I think Mr.P should take a crack at a Stormlord.

I so bad want one, but I dont have the Plasticard skilz you all have.

MrP
24-09-2008, 11:53
The Stormlord? Neah, she's too small! ;)

Right, I've finished the basics on the test turret - which I'll have to make a vehicle for now.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Supers/Turrets.jpg

The nearer turret will be on Baneblade #1. Normal Russ barrel for scale. The longer barrel behind it is my knock-off Basilisk one. So you can see that the "small" test turret mounts 3 Earthshaker cannon. The options for the turrets are as follows:

1. Quad Earthshaker Cannon
2. Triple Medusa Cannon
3. Twin/Triple Baneblade Cannon
4. Twin/Triple Volcano Cannon (Shadowsword main armament, model as rail guns?)

I'm leaning toward 1 or 2 atm. Final plans for the design are incomplete, but she'll be at least 8" wide and 24" from bow to stern. Yup, a seagoing craft!

But I'm not mad enough to build a battleship in 40K scale! So she'll be the next best thing: a monitor - heavy guns on a comparatively small frame, designed for slow speed and unloading a large amount of heavy artillery onto the enemy. The idea is that the Imperial Guard lack the technologically advanced orbital bombardment capabilities of the Space Marines, and cannot always rely on the fleet to provide them. So a quintessentially Imperial Guard (low tech) solution is used when fighting near a coastline.

I planned initially to model her after the battleships Nelson and Rodney, but in the end I seem to have ended up with a look more like the (early design) second KGVs. Given that the look is partly modelled after the class of which Prince of Wales was a member, you can be sure there'll be plenty of AA and AAA weaponry!

Sorry for slow progress, but I've been reading Haig's diaries (see bottom left of pic)!

Chaps, what do you think for the turrets? Triple Medusa or quad Earthshaker? I shan't be making the guns until tomorrow, so you've got about 12 hours to voice an opinion. I'm toying with twin LB ACs or full-on Hydra turrets on either side as secondary armament. Thoughts?

Faolan
27-09-2008, 17:49

MrP

Lots of supports! :D

Which looks better - the guns on the left turret or those on the right turret?

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Supers/Monitor4.jpg

The right turret will be used, mounting either three of the larger guns (Medusae) or 4 of the smaller guns (Basilisks).

Colonel Jacka
28-09-2008, 03:49
I vote for the one on the right. Do you have any concept drawings of this beast?

Faolan
28-09-2008, 08:13
Eh, I'd go with the right.

Although, wouldn't it be more of a challenge to yourself, instead of more of the same, to rig up a plasma cannon like the baneblade variant has?

MrP
28-09-2008, 11:12
Cheers, fellas! Right it is. I ruled out plasma weaponry in the (brief) planning stage as I decided it was too high tech, and this vessel, although superheavy in size, is not as tactically versatile as a Baneblade type, so doesn't really deserve such tech. No concept stuff except in my head, really. Well, aside from this -

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Supers/Monitor.jpg

- which is already out-of-date, as I now plan on having two funnels side-by-side. Nor is this image to scale. I'll get a pic up of the upper hull when the main guns are emplaced, and that'll render a better idea of the eventual look of the beast.

MrP
28-09-2008, 23:11
Right, done one turret, but need the local DIY place to have some supplies before I can do the other two guns.

Comparison with prototype smaller turret:

Comparison with 28mm WWI Brit:

The missing bits slot into the guns to make them appear thicker - and thus more capable of actually lobbing a shell -

Looking good. I look forward to seeing what you do with the hull. Maybe you could add some Anti Air quad guns as well.

hydra turrets for the smaller planes

Hm, I suppose I could mount Autocannon turrets either side of the superstructure, then pop a missile launcher atop the Bridge proper . . .

Well, I'm still undecided. However, even if I don't put Hydra turrets on the monitor, I will need to make them for my homegrown Hydra company. So here we are.

A bit bigger in every dimension than the FW ones, as you can see, but still recognisably LB ACs, I hope!

Firstly, hope your keeping well. The cold months are settling in now, so im expecting a productive winter with at least 30 more tanks appearing :-)

Das Boat is amazing. Talk about a big toy! Are you trying to make up for a lack of something with cannons that big?

I really like how it is coming along, and by the looks of it, the hydras will be equally as gorgeous!

I'm not too bad, thankee. Hope you're well yourself! I'll try to fit in the tanks in between essays and reading. I shall probably end up doing a Malcador at some point, since they're so very WWI.

A mate and I once made a list of appalling wargaming chat-up lines, referring to such things as six inch guns. Sadly, we were too sane to try them out!

Thankee, dear boy! I'm still undecided on placing the Hydra turrets on the monitor, but I am leaning in that direction. Going to check out the DIY place in a couple of hours to see if they have the final bits I need yet. Should have some more pis later, if they do!

Sadly, I doubt I have enough room for it all and an opponent's army! ;) So I'm only going to use it all when I visit my old uni . . . and the thought of fitting all this in my Peugeot makes me um. :D

I didn't miss some fine print in the contract when I bought it, did I? If it helps, it's only a small Peugeot . . . and it inspired me, when I mis-assembled my WIP BB with the turret and hull stuff on the wrong side, to claim it was French-designed instead of the GW-standard. :D

The problem there is vehicles that mount a weapon on the opposite hull side to the driver. I'd have to find somewhere else to stick a Trojan's HB or a Baneblade's Demo Cannon. And although I could, I have a niggling feeling it'd be bad for some unknown reason. Whenever I ignore those feelings on the grounds of illogicality, something goes wrong!

I thought you'd finally learned to leave stowage off until after painting, mate!

The Chims look good, but I would point out that most command APCs tend to have larger compartments and more aerials, not smaller.

Since those are dummy guns (as they wouldn't be usable) you might want to fill in the gaps between the top and bottom rods, basically making them look cut out of wood, but not really (ref WW2 dummy tanks/weaps on command v's).

I was thinking remote controlled from within for the lasguns (when I stick on the "turret" you'll see it fits with that), but the wood idea is tempting. Aye, you're right about the need for more communications equipment, but I assembled this years ago (literally 2-4, I think), and lacked the knowledge I do now. So I just based it on a Command Section having 5 blokes as opposed to 10. Wow, that's been a while!

I like that idea. I'll try to get round to it. I've been blasted today by trying to compile a comprehensive list of sources on British strategy in the Great War. I've been typing up books and authors for about three or four hours and it isn't comprehensive. We've nine people doing this in total, thank God!

Anyway, I've cut out the lower hull of the monitor, and have been working on creating a load of 2" tall supporting sections onto which I will place the upper hull. Still WIP.

One more time, great work with a lot of good ideas : I like your command chimera rear hull. Maybe could you add a commander hatch on the turret emplacement. With a HMG it would look great!
Regarding the tracks, I'm not on the rust side, but this colour looks ok with your paint scheme. One other point could be to paint the caoutchouc pads ont every single link, a very long job but...
How many vehicles are enlisted in a full strengh 40k armoured division? 200? 300...

Not got round to doing the weapon for the command Chimaera yet, but will try to get it done tomorrow so you can give me your thoughts. It certainly does feel like a Forgeworld here sometimes! Or a forge, at least today - Mum's mother's visiting; she has arthritis, so we've had three log fires burning all evening. I am now recovering by sitting here in shorts with my window open!

I shall have a go at doing the rubber pads tomorrow. I've been distracted of late by various bits and bobs - in no particular order: Napoleonic Brits, WWI Brits and Germans (and a solitary squadron of French cavalry), and painting ID markers onto my Thunderer and Exterminator companies. Despite this, I have managed to get some pics of my 1st Chimaera Company on the board upstairs.

MrP
24-10-2008, 23:09
Right, forgive the blurring. First, this is how the wheels'd work. Not too visible and don't lift the Baneblade any higher than tracks would.

Second, size of the wheels. There'll be three pairs on either side.

This is the basic design philosophy of American SUV.
As long as you don't mind paying through the nose for gas it fine.

MrP
25-10-2008, 07:12
Ah, this is a bit unfortunate. I was quite keen on the idea, so decided to knock it up anyway, and so spent the last few hours watching a documentary on WWI, and sprucing up the side a bit. I'd considered the ground pressure question, and written it off as it's 40k. However, both that and the turning capability are good points. Anyway, talking aside, it's a fait accompli now. And on that French note - voilà!

Hope you feel better soon, and I love all your work. Not only are you building more from scratch than most people have seen, you continue to push the boundaries to find new and amazing ideas. Now when you get some more points you should head over to the states to play our resident Eldar player. When asked why he needed so many points, he pointed out that the game is called Warhammer '40,000' not Warhammer '2,000'! I seem to have unwittingly gone for a WWII German style gun-shield. Fear not the elevation of the gun - it's loose and will have a gunner propping it at a more likely angle when complete.

To do:
Find something to fill up the gaps on the front left and right;
Stick some binoculars on the gun to approximate a sighting mechanism, and add some more details;
Do something to detail the wheels a bit - nothing complicated, just some riveted circles of plasticard;
Lights or somesuch for front and back;
Rivets for most stuff and a handle for the front hatch;
What have I forgotten?

Second, a Laser Destroyer. Problems with the varnish again as it's cold today. Not really sure what to do about that. It's only going to get colder and I can hardly not varnish things until summer! Hm.

Your tanks always look a bit odd in their pre-painted form, and I can't see how they'd work, but then with that paitn job they just look awesome!

Grr, reading your log always makes me feel sad that my armoured forces are just a Leman Russ, a Land Raider, a lego titan and a rhino that I kinda may have smashed with a hammer to form a base for said titan. :(

Thankee, old man. My painting must have improved in the last few pages! :) If ye fancy building stuff, just have a stab at it. Provided you plan it out beforehand, you'll find it comes quite quickly!

No update on the Sally, but I have been working on three more Russmera turrets. I planned for a company of ten, but seem only to have prepared the turrets for 8 (2 completed, 3 PIP, and these 3 under construction), so, er, evidently ignoring my own advice about good planning, as I'll need to knock up another two at some point. Anyway! Here's the trio with a PIP for comparison. There's a scale shot upthread somewhere, and I'll post one in a bit when I've done more work.

I hope in the next few hours to get these three done to undercoating stage, and possibly their hulls as well.

Apologies for the blurring. I took a few pics, and all were pretty bad.

And undercoated a Russ (Vanquisher-to-be) and a Chimaera that's been sat around for about a year, I think!

Thankee. They're going to be mounting points for some skirts at some point. I need to get another one, as the left side has three. I've just remembered one can date this Chimaera from not only the fact it's got that clumsy side exhaust mounting I abandoned, but also has sides made of CD cases!

I've been toying with buying a proper Chimaera or Russ or both this week. It's a bit draining forever adding rivets and so on to vehicles. It'd be nice to have a basic kit to assemble for once! But given the current world economic climate, my financial advisor would be quite displeased, I think. :D

Right?

I don't know if I have a favourite. I'm developing something of an emotional attachment to this current Company Command Chimaera, but that might just be the number of rivets! ;) I think for all its flaws, I shall still go with my second Sally Command, which is mostly here on page 7 (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98271&page=7).

On the other hand, the three has a more modern look to it. The sides above the wheels will be further detailed, of course. Wheels are just blu-tacked for now.

Mr. P,

Here's a quick suggestion for you. I've posted it somewhere on one of these threads before, but it will save you a bit of paint and yime if you like.

Regarding cammo nets: Use the 4X4 or 2X2 gauze pads. Take them apart and remove the cotton batting, leaving just the mesh part, as you have. NOW, brew up a cup of boiling water and add either 5 or 6 tea bags, or 5 or 6 teaspoons of instant coffee and stir well to dissolve. Next, place the gauze mesh into a shallow bowl and pour the tea/coffee over and allow to soak for a day. Take them out, lay flat and allow to dry. Voila! Insta knaki/brownish cammo netting with no need to paint.

If you like, you can also give it a shot of hairspray and then dust with flocking/leaf material for vegetation added netting. For a stronger finish, give another shot of hairspray once the flocking is in place, and allow to dry for a bit. You could also use clear matte spray paint in lieu of the hair spray.

Works like a champ. :)

Respects,

MrP

I'd go with three wheels, P.

I'd also thicken up the walls a bit, since they just look too flimsy - great spot for some stowage bins inside and out.

Maybe also add in a fender that covers the top third of the wheels?

MrP
30-11-2008, 23:42
Right, chaps, I've gone with three. Am making the side paraphernalia for one atm. Still needs filing, so pics in about 3 hours. In essence a modified version of the normal Chimaera's float tanks - or whatever those side things are. Toying with knocking up a faux suspension system using one of those plastic pencils' internal metal springy-things. Thoughts?

MrP
01-12-2008, 02:03
Here we go.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Wheels1.jpg

Springs would be placed to look as though they go up the two downward protruding bits of the side system. I think this current thing's a bit small, so for vehicle #2, I'll have it larger. I'll definitely add mudguards before I'm done, Faolan, yup! I'm going to resist the urge to add (more) stowage before she's painted - if I can. ;)

And now I'll go make some tea and nets! :)

G.Hawke
01-12-2008, 02:19
hmm... i thin the sides lack something. the inside and top look amazing, however by compare the wheels (as you'd expect) and side armour seem blank. i think the mudflaps will go some way to cure that but... seems a good excuse to hang things pf the side to me

perhaps extending the upper armour town to create a slight wheel arch at the front could be in order? give it both a greater military purpose (in that it not as easy to shoot the wheels) and could add a nice bit of detail. However as it is, very nice, looks alot more practical.

Now, those who've been following for a couple of pages will remember those Hydra barrels. At the time I disagreed with those who said they look too big. But I was peering at them the other day, and . . . yeah, you guys were right! So I shall in time knock up some different Hydrae. For now, though, those who suggested Vanquisher guns have created a self-fulfilling prophecy. So here are the three prototypes I'm doing. They share certain features with my scratch Russ turrets, but turret shape, the thickness of the plasticard used, and construction methods all reflect experience learned. And I've offset the main gun to allow for the coaxial HS I shall model some time in the misty future. So here they are with the basic Russ turret and a Kasrkin for scale.

Just like its "put on trousers, THEN fry bacon".

Ah well.

Here's an idea for your Hydras- do what I did (use Gatlings), just a bit larger! I used the largest OC gatling barrels he had, and whilst they work for my hardware, probably not so much for yours. Construct the recievers yourself (obviously) and then take the compass and scribe out your retaining circle for the barrels, and just use either plastic or aluminium tubing to make 'em, probably about 5-6cm long for the rotating barrel (the OC ones are 3cm).

That way you get an interesting cross between the German Gephard and the US VADS, something that just plain looks mean.

Love the tanks. Especially the latest batch of turrets up there. Looks a bit tigerish.

I've done the turret sides. That filing takes a long time!

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/VTurrets9.jpg

And have an idea on producing cheap(er) Trojans.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Comparison1.jpg

I doubt I'll implement that. The vehicle there's a) still a little too large, and b) has an enclosed driver's compartment. So she'll probably become a Sally or transport. But I thought I'd throw the idea out there in case anyone else was inspired by it.

Next I need to finish these turrets: rivets, hatches, any insignia I can find lying about, Heavy Stubbers, dust covers and sighting stuff. I'm currently inclined not to stick the targeting box on the side for two reasons. First, I dislike it, and second, it's more work than not doing it!

Anyway, once they're complete, I shall leave their hulls in hiatus and do that long-awaited super!

MrP

I've stuck a total of 308 rivets onto the seven turrets. And I've stuck on the Heavy Stubbers. Other stuff when I get up. Off to bed now, I think. Thoughts on my planb to omit the targeting box would be much appreciated. :)

I've got to say that YOUR turrets, in the comparison, remind me of the KV-1 and what the hell was the Land Battleships the Soviets fielded in the 30s and early 40s?

MrP
23-12-2008, 04:54
I see what you mean, aye. I was intentionally going for a flat production line style, and the KV-1 is a lot like that. I must admit, I'm not really happy with how bare the top surfaces have turned out. So I'll do something about that next time.

Done the 3rd Squad of my Steel Legion first platoon tonight.

Probably going to be a bit distracted from updates for a while, as I have a) 4,000 words to write on the usefulness of Haig's diaries to the historian, b) a presentation on British strategic planning prior to WWI, and c) a large amount of early war BEF cavalry to paint up.

SDKFZ
24-12-2008, 08:52
I know the trackproblem is a seriuos problem. The only tracks in 1/35 scale that will work OK with 40k Super Heavies are Dragons E-100 ones, and that is a rather expencive kit ( to get just for the tracks ! ).

Try scratchbuilding as i have done on my Baneblade.( Check out my SH-tread. )

you got the tracks?? and their too wide?? what the heck did you do to get it so wide???:eek:

well you could use the 1/35 tracks by making a plastic underlayment and use the 1/35 tracks for the details on that underlayment i mean cut lots of flatshaped plastic rod and make a track from that and use the tracks for the detailing, or make the tracks themself wider with the help of some square(or flat) shaped plastic rod.

i myself used the spare tracks from the E-100 as blastvents for my plasma blastguns. and it looks great. and with your skills it must be looking right when your done.

MrP
25-12-2008, 11:09
Yeah, the tracks I got are about 7-8mm narrower than those of the FW resin Shadowsword (no idea about the plastic BB/etc, as haven't seen one in the flesh yet). Good for something like the Malcador (although that looks to be modelled with regular Russ tracks), but not so much something this big. I'll probably scratch stuff, and may well use these for detailing, aye.

Right, not done owt with tanks of late, but today I have been fiddling around with some Cadians I undercoated with Halford's yellow primer before Christmas (and found in a box this evening). I can't really justify putting them in here, since they have nowt whatsoever to do with armour. But with them was FW's Stormy Chimaera Commander.

Lovely model. Had him for about six (seven?) years now, and this is his second coat of paint. There's a lot of shiny stuff in the picture, but that's just the result of the camera flash and the fact his first coat of gloss varnish (Army Painter Quickshade: Strong Tone) is drying. He'll look better when I spray him with the matte tomorrow.

He always reminded me of Geordie, my ex-military sensei at uni. Lovely fella, he was! Anyway, that's the origin of the name. Incidentally, in . . . sixteen (?) years, this is the closest I have managed to come to painting a satisfactory pair of eyes on a 25/28mm model. And it still isn't right! Bah!

Not the Napoleonics, but I have indeed been a bit remiss. I've been rather halfheartedly working on infantry - both Guard and WWI Brits, French and Germans - but none is really suitable for posting, I'm sorry to say. I was also a bit distracted this last weekend, as I was supposed to visit Paris with a friend to see Dita von Teese. However, my flight out of Bristol Airport was cancelled. Bit of a pest, that! I'll try to get something up to a passable standard, but it'll probably be infantry, not vehicular!

Well id love to see some infantry... both your Historical and 40k stuff.

Yeah, it was a bit mad, Faolan. None of the buses in Bath weren't operating on Saturday . . . even though the roads were gritted and clear. :D That said, the taxi driver who took us to the airport did say that before it was a proper commercial airport, it was a place for pilots to learn to fly in foggy conditions - which makes me think I should have flown from Manchester instead. I'll try that next time!

Still no models today. I've got a few score of blokes in that yellow green mix who may be ready in a day or two.

So what you are saying, Faolan, is that I have to:
1) Buy a godlike, custom computer.
2) Buy DOW II, Empire Total War, and all the other high end games from the last 2-3 years I have missed out on.
3) Spend a heap on guard because the new codex is coming out soon, and there will be lots of toys for my traitor Armoured Taskforce to play with.

Too much good stuff!
