View Full Version : Too many tanks? Impossible!
I keep popping WIPs in the Treadhead thread, but I've been thinking for a while that I should really reserve that for completed AFVs. So here we are.
I present for your consideration 2 WIPs (Exterminators) and 1 PIP (Laser Destroyer).
I've a mate who utterly loathes sponsons - to the extent that he won't put them on his tanks, so I'm on a neverending quest to save my girlfriend! - no, that's not right - to fit 3 HBs onto the hull and turret without it looking too mad - partly for his benefit, and partly as an intellectual exercise. Why worry about it looking crazy in 40K, you say? 'Cause I'm an idiot!
The larger Exterminator is Big Sis, and the smaller is Little Brother. I am probably going to make the latter a 6-wheeler rather than tracked. Apologies for poor lighting. It's half midnight here. Without further ado:

out of those 3 tanks, the tracked exterminator is my fav.

I am looking forward to the Emperor's Fist. I plan to knock up at least 20 tanks from those 10 kits! As a reward, y'get to see how the turret rotates. Dunno if you saw it, but t'other week I'd somewhow picked up the idea that DVD cases can be glued with poly cement. They can't. However, after some experimenting, it became apparent that CD cases can.

Big Sis is in the process of being undercoated. Little Brother I need help deciding on four wheels or six.

He will get additional setailing along the side, of course! I'm just delaying designing that till I know what the side will look like.

There are never too many tanks. :skull:
I look forward to your progress in this log MrP. I also await the coveted Emperor's Fist tank company...and secretly pray they continue to produce it until Christmas (if GW knows what's best for 'em).

NEVER ! i have 26 13 being lemans,.. and 27 when i get the bane blade... and then add 2 more cuase imma make conversions for the shadowsword, the stormblade and the super seige on i forgot which was .. sorry 30 on one takn i guess i woul say but 30 tanks i want to hve entirely =) so far using my armroed company.. i havnt lost a game in 9 games =)
I am intrigued by your brilliant CD system and wish to know more. How well does the turret rotate, and does it stay on well? Do you have a CD on the bottom of the turret itself?
And did you ever end up finishing those zeppelins?

Good tanks mate, will look forward to seeing them painted up.
Cheers, chaps. :)
Nobody answered my 4 or 6 question, but I decided on 6, so a moot point.
I am intrigued by your brilliant CD system and wish to know more. How well does the turret rotate, and does it stay on well? Do you have a CD on the bottom of the turret itself?
And did you ever end up finishing those zeppelins?
The zeppelins hit a wall (no, not literally. Breathe!) when I realised I couldn't simulate the surface. However, a quick-thinking mate suggested a cheapo umbrella. I attached it, and it's been sitting about, needing more work on it. I'll pop a pic in here as soon as its gondolas and so forth are done.
You're too kind in calling the CD system brilliant, but flattery will get you everywhere! Rotation's not a problem - except insofar as it was a late addition, so the bottom of the turret is an uncircular hole half-gouged, half-drilled out of the centre. Unprofessional of me, that. Anyway, it stays on well enough for rotation, though inverting the tank will lead to the turret rapidly descending to the carpet below. I shall go get two more CD cases and see if they fit happily for rotation. If they do, then I'll be a very happy bunny.
I undercoated Big Sis, and Little Brother has had his wheel's attached. I've mainly been knocking together some flanks for him. Still WIP, so poorly held in place for the pics with tape. Very happy with the HS - which is a HS barrel, Cadian lasgun grip and butt, Cadian Heavy Weapon gunshield, and the body of a 1/35 7.92mm - I think. I will be replacing the exhausts - and probably adding some protective mesh, too. I got this off a mate as a Demolisher, and he's no fan of poly cement. So everything is superglue. Each to their own, I suppose. The flanks are also being glued together. Pics next update. Anyway, here's the latest of Little Brother:.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/5-1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/4-1.jpg
And here's Big Sis:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/3-1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/2-1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/1-1.jpg
No good results with the proposed system of having 2 CD cases rotating with one another. I'll keep at it. Been doing lots more work on Little Brother. He's off for undercoating as soon as I've posted these. I'm also adding another Aquila above the twin-HB position as it looks bare. The flanks of the Demolisher whence I acquired his chassis have had a plasticard chassis added. I'm pretty happy with the engine I knocked together for that.
Little Brother:

I love how you did the new demolisher engine exhaust, looks great, how'd you do it? Your gonna have quite the variety of AFV's by the time your finished.
-scrubout
Cheers, chaps. :)
Variety: Aye - I can't seem to stick to any one type - or even a single type of camo! :D I think when I finally come up with a background for my Guard it'll be summat like: "Half a dozen different regiments from as many worlds all got smashed to pieces by a particular vicious Xenos attack, and the remnants have been thrown together into an amalgamated unit for the duration of the campaign. Fighting for their lives and the glory of the Emperor and so on."
The new exhaust is quite a few bits and bobs. The circular khaki-coloured bit is from a 1/35 PzII, I think. The grey bit linking the exhaust to the hull is cut from a sprue. Y'know how some sprues (not GW ones) have circular central bits? I cut a quarter off one of them and filed it a little. The bit that separates the exhaust proper from the hull is just a small piece of that plasticard that has three sides - a sort of square U-shape, if you catch my drift. The exhaust itself is two sizes of plasticard tube. The larger I'd glued ends onto ages ago but had no real idea what to do with it - till now! The smaller I just cut at an angle and glued onto the end of the larger.
The heat cover is the thinnest plasticard available (so that I can easily bend it round the exhaust) that I laboriously drilled holes in with a pin vice. I first glued one end in place and let it dry. Rather foolishly, this was the top half. Then I glued the other half to the exhaust support. I could be keener on the effect, since the problem using such a thin material is that the pin vice tore up the plasticard and din't produce a perfect circle every time. I'll cover this up with texture when I finally paint the thing, though.
If that's unclear (or deadeningly verbose, more like!) I can take a few snaps of some of the bits to aid comprehension. I lack any more of the exhaust-size plasticard tube, but I've found a spare Russ exhaust from somewhere, so I could use that in a "how to."
Not much to add today. I've been spending some time painting some Amazonian Indians I got from Copplestone yonks ago. However, my experiments with gluing stuff to stuff have uncovered that mechanical pencils can be glued to plasticard with poly cement. So I present the new model exhaust for your inspection. :)

Cool tanks :D
Things here are still looking good. Little brother (I think that's the first one in your last post) is particularly snazzy. To my eye, a little better than the others. Maybe it's the photos, or maybe it's actually looks darker, grubbier and well used.
Also, that Demolisher of yours, are you putting the whole track guard on? If so, why have you got that tracks underneath? If not, what are you planning?
I meant to mention a while ago, after a small amount of time in research and development my Hellhound now sports a nifty CD turret system. Many thanks for the inspiration.

Cheers for the kind comments, old boy. Little Brother (yup, that's the right one) is a bit darker than the others - probably because he was undercoated in black because I ran out of brown spraypaint. Glad to have been a spot of inspiration with the Hellhound. :)
The Demolisher is one a friend assembled with, ah, superglue. The brittle bond - as opposed to the lovely melting concomitant with poly cement - means that things come off if I poke them hard. So the track guards are sitting about, waiting for me to shave down the sides a little and glue them on properly. I plan to hide problems with camo netting. It's served me well with this KangaRuss I knocked up ages ago and just revisited (apologies for the appallingly messy paintwork!):

Why does it look furry? :wtf:
Its netting, bandage I believe, It will show up when he's painted it
Jase is right - for how it'll look when painted see the stuff wrapped around the TL ACs of Little Brother.
I have a new project that'll distract me from finishing that one now. The CD case Chimaera. I've cut two flanks so far. The best way, given the very fragile/fractal nature of CD case plastic is to mark a line with a marker pen, cut gently along that line with a sharp knife, then carefully saw through the rest of it. I was chatting to my brother while sawing it, and I think this is probably the selfsame plastic many model kits use for windscreens and the like. Same properties. Anyway, once it's cut, you can very carefully file the edges so that they're rounded as in the pic below. Right, I'm now going to trim down some more CD cases and see what I can manage to accomplish. If anyone fancies doing a cutaway vehicle for something, this stuff'd be great. Not much use for vehicles with very curvy sides like the Eldar, though.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0302.jpg
Right, I assembled the other pieces -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0303.jpg
- and have created the main body. I think the assembly is reasonably obvious, so I'll only explain if someone requests it.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0307.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0306.jpg
And finally:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0305.jpg
There is a bit of an imbalance at the back, which is irritating. But this is only my first effort. I expect subsequent models will fit much better and not be lopsided!
Anyway, quite chuffed with this so far! Nest - some sort of engine compartment/flotation tank setup on the sides and the wheels. Perhaps not tonight.
Oh, the turret fitting's the one bit that might be obscure. I marked a point in the top of the hull with my knife, and carefully drilled a small hole, which I then cautiously enlarged. The turret has had the usual locking bit replaced with a little nail. It rotates quite happily.
actually thats coming on really good!

Out of interest how are you planning to paint this? Not entirely sure how well the paint will stick to the shiney sides.
just run emery paper of it before spraying
I don't think there'll be a problem with the paint sticking. It's always stuck horribly well to transparent 1/72 US jeep windscreens in the past. ;)
But, aye, I'll probably rough it up a little first - give it a bit of texture.
Added outer flanks, so she's looking a bit beefier:

Don't forget the exhausts were made the other week, and the little escape hatches I knocked up a load of ditto. The rear exit's been sitting around for a month. The skirts are stolen from a 1/35 Flankpanzer. It's just gluing bits of stuff I've had around for yonks together at long last. Aside from the cuting of the CD case it's taken months to get here. ;)
Well, I had visitors over the weekend, so couldn't do much. But I've finally finished her off!

Keeping to a zero budget, download Easy E's chimera template, print off the side detailing on some card, cut it out and stick it on (PVA it to harden it), theres the detail you are missing

I started work detailing it last night, sadly. But I'll do as you suggest for the MkIII. The MkII isn't looking too bad. Better than the MkI, but not as good as thy suggestion. I was quite pleased to be able to knock up that little thing that Chimaerae and Russes have at the front that appears to be summat to do with the foremost wheel.I just filed down a Cadian flamer fuel tank and then glued a cog to it. The little things marking the wheels are HS mounts. A bad idea, in retrospect, since I only have enough for one side. How many times must I learn that lesson? ;)
Comparison to a normal Chimaera side:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0335.jpg
On its own:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0336.jpg
The turret on the MkII will be raised up above the hull on a low platform.
I really must invest in a rivet cutter . . .
Right, some more bits and bobs.

I've been working on the flanks of the Russes. The initial layer of thin stuff is done on 9, and the second layer and hole-punched plasticard and sliced tubular sprue is done on this prototype. Thankee, gents, but you're not quite there yet. This one should give it away. I am considering a larger tube for the comically exaggerated 40K look, but I rather like the look of this diameter. What do you lads think? Shall I embiggen it?

Right, off outside to undercoat these three:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0485.jpg
And a spot of PIP:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0488.jpg
Turrets for the 10 Exterminators with a single coat of Knarloc Green. Will finish detailing the hulls today so I can undercoat them tonight and paint tomorrow. Got one more Thunderer I'm still assembling with them. And then onto knocking up some bodies for the Executioner turrets to sit on. Oy vey!
Just put the base coat of KG on the hulls. Going to slap on a second layer of Catachan Green now, then a quick and slapdash highlight of Camo Green.

Let me go grab a pic of the Vanqs, Christian. The bally Exterminators are all boxed up for Lampy by now. :p
Right, 8 Vanqs, 1 Ex and 1 Chi:

Right, it's been a while. Here's some more progress on the DS:

Greetings,
This is about 90% of MrP's tanks.

Cheers, old man! Great weekend, that! :D
Stuck a front on the DS:

Self-explanatory hydraulic system. Or probably not self-explanatory. Who cares? ;)

A sextet of bare bones Demolishers. No turrets yet, just hull Lascannons.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0515.jpg
And a trio of Hydrae - or Hydras, if you prefer. I've had one for a while and finally bought another pair to bring it up to battery strength. I've outfitted 'em all with Heavy Stubbers and HK Missiles to maximise firepower. And I've learned my lesson on giving them Track Guards - the blasted turret doesn't rotate if one gives 'em regular ones! So thinnest plasticard it is. I shall knock up an Apoc Datasheet for a battery of 'em, I think. I can hear people saying I must have terrible trouble with enemy flyers to have decided to field a battery of these things . . . but I don't know a soul with any! :D
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Hydra1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Hydra2.jpg
Turrets were undercoated earlier - and are probably dry, now I come to think of it. I'm redoing the paint scheme on the first, as I never did finish it. Plus, I'd like 'em to look unified!

Tons of tanks, keep it up!=)
Oh that Rocket thing is great!
Thankee, old man! :)
A spot of PIP:

Hydra Batteries are also fantastic against light vehicles and 4+ save chaps. Dakka Dakka Dakka.

Especially with their lovely 6' range, aye! :D
All sat in a row waiting for my attentions:

Gone back to detailing the scratch Demos. Riveting is, er, not as interesting as the homonym might lead one to believe.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/DSCF0546.jpg
Just doing three for now - yes, I know the middle one's in need of more rivets and the right hand one has no viewport . . . and they all lack Demo turrets. :p

You should end yourself for that pun mate... Saves me throttling you when I sees thee next. They do look good though.
You produce 300-odd rivets and see what happens to your sense of humour!
Oh, wait - you enjoy Family Guy. :p :D
Been working on the turret:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Demo.jpg
Dear me! I really have neglected this log. Right, a bit of an update on the turrets first. Started doing some Russ versions to add to the Demolisher ones:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/T1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/T2.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/T3.jpg
Then I got distracted and started planning to expand my Bassie battery to a full company for Apoc. To avoid having to do as much detail work, I selected the Armageddon pattern.
First, I knocked up the gun from a plumbing thingy, two different sizes of plasticard tube and a Russ barrel.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Gun.jpg
Next I knocked up a fighting compartment, but realised it was too small for actually fighting in! D'oh!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Turret.jpg
So I extended it and test fitted the new size on an existing Bassie.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/FightingCompartment.jpg
Having found a size that worked, I moved on to mass production.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Compartments1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Compartments2.jpg
They're almost fully riveted now. At slightly under 150 rivets apiece, I'm beginning to suspect that my plan to reduce how much work I'll have to do has failed dramatically!

Is your government aware that you have a Russian tank factory hidden in your home?
Riveting is nearly done, but detailing is a long way from complete, sadly.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/FC3.jpg
And an attempt at "Tinners-ifying" the pic to prove there really are rivets in that sea of white!

Cheers, old boy! Always good to have praise from a master! :)
Been working on my shortage of hatches, too, and got inspired by your lovely Bombard hatches to *attempt* some round ones.

Exellent looking scratch builds.
Cheers, Col. :)
I would have some updates tonight, but for reasons unknown FinePixViewer Ver. 4.3 has spontaneously decided it hates me, and crashes within second of starting up. So, ah, I'm screwed until I can sort that out. Painted one of the Demolishers, for what little a verbal description (I am clearly no Vergil!) is worth. It's, er, green. Bloody camera upload system!
Hm, it seems that using the actual prog screws stuff up, but not using it lets it work fine. Right.
OK, one green tank - missing its Lascannon:

Looks good, but I spy some white there. :p
Also for hatches I use a circle cutter, I picked one up for around £3 and its probably one of my most used things, you can probably get them from any craft store.

Sadly right about the white - slapping on some diluted Chaos Black now to deal with it! ;)
Craft Stores, eh? I honestly don't know of any hereabouts. I can honestly say the last time I was in one, I was in Skipton in Yorkshire - and that was with the ex, so not recently! :D I'll have to keep an eye open for ones in the Stoke area! :)

Something like that. Just search compass cutter and you'll find some, they arent expensive at all.
Great ideas, great, great ideas.
All I really want to know, past "do you take commissions?", is why you decided against casting your scratchbuilt common pieces to save you having to build it a dozen times?

Not really a commissions kinda chap, old boy - I work too slowly, I fear! But thankee kindly for the offer! :)
I don't cast copies partly because I prefer working with plastic, but mainly because I'm a bit of a stick in the mud and lack the requisite casting tech. I'll probably get round to it in five years or so, of course! :D
Just infantry today, no tanks at all. Been working on Stormies latterly -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Stormtroopers.jpg
and Kasrkin formerly -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Kasrkin.jpg
And lest anyone fear I misuse those terms - I'm consciously deploying them in reverse order! :)
Right, been doing a small amount of work today. The circle cutter arrived, so I've been fiddling with it constantly! :D
More significantly, I decided to knock up another Sally Command, so -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyCWIP.jpg
I shall follow the same sort of pattern for the Bassies, so here's how the fighting compartment looks perched on the Sally Command hull:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/BasMockUp.jpg
Some detailing on the SC so far today. Might even get her finished by day's end, if I can keep up my interest.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyC2.jpg
Some work on the radio set:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyC3.jpg
Gunshield, gun and whatnot attached. Rather than detail the rear of the HB/HS mount, I'm thinking of using one of those cybernetic wallahs of whom the Imperium is so terribly fond. Possibly a good idea or should I make more work for myself, folks?
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyC4.jpg
Very little more done, and now to bed. Scale shots, pretty much:

Cheers, fellas! Some work done on the side details today. Tinners-ified for ease of spotting rivets!

Your conversions look like spot on reconstructions of the GW stuff...
Thankee, Colonel! :)
Slapped on the first bit of paint. Plenty of gaps to cover revealed in the photo. I really should invest in one of those spray kerjiggers some day!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyCPIP1.jpg
Also doing some dozer blades. I quite like the toothbrush scatter effect, but I'm sure I'm missing something.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Dozers.jpg
Right, about halfway through the painting process.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyCPIP2.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyCPIP3.jpg
Still not finished the painting, but I've become distracted by some other bits and bobs, so here they are. I had some spare sides, so I scratched some basic stuff for the hull:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Assorted1.jpg
And I didn't fancy using the standard Lascannon thingy for the fronts, so I've flattened them down, and will be using Mars Alpha style things in place.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Assorted2.jpg
Huzzah! Finally the Old Crow stuff arrived! It's lovely, by the way.
I'll be using this (I have two more to unpack) as a Manticore for Apocalypse:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Manticore.jpg
these chaps are - well, sold as INAPs, IIRC, which doubtless means I'm Not A Predator. ;)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Preds.jpg
And I got some vehicles, too. A pair of scout vehicles (Sentinel stand-ins, I fancy), and a big ol cargo carrier - everyone needs cargo carriers!

Good god that definitely qualifies as a (profanity) load of tanks.
I think I need to get up to enough that I have one tank for each infantryman in my Guard army. ;) As it is it's about a 3:1 ratio in favour of the infantry. Which just ain't good enough! :D
Just been undercoating the stuff that arrived today. I must say I'm happier with this resin than I am with *most* FW stuff. Though I do acknowledge the beauty of the Centaur.
The undercoat's dried on half the resin stuff, so I thought I'd do a test scheme for a missile. Really, they're too small for Manticore missiles - but would make excellent Hellstrike stand-ins - but I don't care! ;)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Missile1.jpg
Done another three, so now to work on the turret-a-ma-jig!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Missile3.jpg
And now stuck on the turret. Yes, the turret needs more work - but I'm over excited. :p

Geckos are coming along nicely, and the Provider's all but done. Stowage on the latter's removeable, of course. I've done her in a very simple Wehrmachty/rear echelon grey kinds flat scheme which I think really suits the model. All the chipping was inspired by my looking at Le Mediko's excellent vehicles.
Anyway, the Provider!

Rivets, rivets, rivets! They are everywhere! I suppose it's only appropriate, but how? What do you make them from? I've noticed they look very uniform, and the only thing you seem to have more of than tanks are the bloody rivets. My ork motorpool is 75% scratch-built, and they'd look considerably better with the rivet work you do.
So come on, show me how!

Plasticard rod, old boy. I slice off thin slivers with a Stanley knife. Then, when I've got about twenty or so, I squeeze a drop or two of poly cement onto an unpainted metal thing (I use the lid of a bottle of Laphroaig Scotch, but anything plain and metal will do). I delicately prick the slivers of plasticard rod with the very tip of the blade, dip them only just into the poly cement, then press them into place on the tank. I use 1mm thick rod in general. One can get thinner, but I find it tricky enough to work with this stuff! One can also use a punch and die set to make uniformly thick rivets from sheets of plasticard, but I have an irrational liking for this painstaking process!
Here we go. Hard to get everything in shot. This is almost all of it. I've got assorted stuff which is still mostly in pieces, so doesn't really warrant inclusion, but this is a good 95%.

The turrets are coming along great, nothing wrong with stealing Tinners ideas, most of do! Could really do with seeing that lot, I think we are on par with the amount of tanks!
So what made you decide to forego guns that elevate? Obviously for playing it's not necessary, but it seems like you'd want to keep the illusion that they COULD elevate.

It's pretty much impossible to tell, since I used Superfine Milliput (which is white), but I have modelled on dust covers, so the illusion will still be there. I considered drilling some holes and mounting the multilasers in the existing gunnery slot, but I ballsed it up and went back to Plan A!

Jolly good stuff, Colonel! The mini-APCs work very well with the guns, and I love the way you've tied them together with the Old Crow wheels - might give that a go myself next time I buy from 'em. Kudos on the vastness of forces, too! Aye, I've done some side shields in the past, and think I might return to it for my current Sallies to save myself more intricate detailing work. :D
Did a spot of work on Sallies while watching the telly last night.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/Sallies3.jpg
Annoyingly, I have no wheels whatsoever, so these probably won't be finished for months - but I can still do the insides! Anyway, decided after making the prototype (pictured way back, but reproduced here for convenience) -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/SallyC9.jpg
- that the standard curving drop at the back unnecessarily exposed the crew to hostile fire, so that's why these ones lack that feature.

The Sallies are very impressive mate. Wish I had your skille with the plastic card.
It's a shame you aren't in the same hemisphere, MrP. I have oodles and gobs of the Chimera/LR wheels around spare. With the standard sponsons, you can't see the wheels, so I only put in the minimum necessary to hold the tracks in right and leave the rest on-sprue.
Cheers, lads! :)
I'll have to emigrate then, old boy! P needs wheels! ;)
I follow the same practice myself nowadays. I find I need 6 for each side for Chimaera chassis, which is bothersome now I've run out of the loads I had back when I bought my Emperor's Whatsit Tank Coy. Ah, well!
Not been much in the mood of late, but I've popped some low backs on these Sallies, realising that it's annoying to have ammo (and men) fall out when the vehicle hits a bump! I've started doing ammo lockers for them, too. Still a way to go, of course, but less than it was this morning.

Just my two cents : you maybe could move the exhaust to an horizontal position along the rear panel
Cheers, le Mediko - I've taken your advice with those chaps. Sorry for the lack of updates, everyone - I've been in a bit of a blah mood. Managed to get a half dozen support vehicles half started. They'll probably be Open Topped Trojans or somesuch whenever they've finished. I've even managed to find some Lego Technic wheels for one of them! Still very WIP, obviously.

As y'can see, I had a change of heart partway through construction and decided to use a computer panel doodah I assembled yonks ago. So one will be an open topped FCV. What could be more sensible than an open topped FCV? ;)
I'm considering equipping these resupply vehicles with just a Heavy Stubber or two, and no hull-mounted Heavy Bolter. I've got loads of HS and few HBs, y'see! Anyway, which of these looks a better place for a tyre (tire, Americans).

You could twin link a Stubber and call it in as a counts-as.

Those Lego Techniques wheels work pretty well I must have a look at them myself.
More work! Some chap on Warseer had the inspired idea of using part of a Russ barrel for his Griffon. Since I have a dozen or more Russ barrels without their muzzles, this appealed to me too! I fear I was just browsing the other day, and didn't note who it was. So if anyone can key me in as to whom I should credit, please do! They'll be Armoured Crew Compartmented as usual, to avoid this whole internal detail lark.

More work on the Support vehicles. One will probably be going to Korea! I've a mate who's over there, and the fellas at his GW is intrigued at the cheapness of plasticard vs. FW resin, so when I finish detailing one, I'll be sending him a sample on spec, as it were.

Aha! Your an Aussie! (or you have some Aussies money) :P
Anyway, it all looks great, mate!
Hah, there you are. Was wondering if you died after I PM'd you about having spare road wheels and never hearing back from you!
Looking good as always, now to see some paint ;)

Oh, sorry about that! I do recall getting it. But I went through a spot of depression, and quite forgot till now. D'oh! I've a bit on my plate atm, but will try to get back to you sharpish. :)
Right, working quickly on the Griffon, have assembled the main hull bits to the fore:

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Griffon4.jpg
Wasn't quite happy with the mortar, so I've added to the barrel. Gaps to be filled, obviously. Done some work, but more to do yet.

Right, done some riveting and a little more. And now to bed. Off to see a mate in Sheffield tomorrow!

I didn't know Korea had a GW...? I'm Korean, and whenever I go back, I'm depressed at the lack of cool hobby stores lol.
But these tanks... they are very ingenious and well made. Great job!

Thankee, Colonel. Hiatus today, but should be back at it tomorrow! :)
EDIT: Painting might be delayed. I'd forgotten there's a wasps' nest the size of my two clenched fists currently overlooking my usual painting area. I don't like to bother a few score wasps. ;)

They've just found a handy sheltered spot right up by the building - I always use it, too, because it's protected from the weather!

Hah! I'll have to get some pics of our trees! :D Neah, I'll just let them grow up and leave. I'll kill wasps if I have to - destroyed a nest in Greece once, as it was on the balcony, and completely unavoidable - but I'll just leave these fellas alone.
Many more rivets.

Cheers, old boy. And I haven't been idle today either! I've received some stowage and jerry can for 1/35 in the post, and I've enclosed the back. Pretty damned firmly, too.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Medusa9.jpg
Going to rivet these extra bits this evening. I'm quite happy with how the door system on the Griffon worked out, so the Medusa will have something similar, but more polished.
I've been watching Enterprise and then Predator downstairs tonight, so I've been assembling two Griffon and one Basilisk fighting compartments, and I've stuck a bit of netting on the Medusa. She got riveted yesterday.
Fighting Compartments so far:

Medusa at the moment:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Medusa10.jpg
Still to do on the Medusa: Hull Heavy Bolter, viewport for driver, driver's hatch, track guards, handles for these hatches, a shedload more rivets, and some gap filling.

MrP, I can not believe how fast you are at putting these things together. How many hours did it take you to put that Griffon or Basilisk together? Tommygun.

Cheers, old boy! A my secret weapon is to be currently unemployed, so I have whole days to dedicate to this - whenever I can summon up the interest! ;) I think that last night I knocked up those three fighting compartments over the course of 2-3 episodes of Enterprise and most of Predator. I wasn't working particularly quickly, I fear! It's more that I find having some background TV a help.
Undercoated the Griffon today, and have slapped on the initial layers of paint.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Griffon14.jpg

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Griffon18.jpg
Except for the sandbags, I like, I like.
Cheers! Any suggestions for the sandbags? I wanted them to look diffrent from the other stowage, but I agree they are a bit too yellow at present.
EDIT: Oh, I've just put on some weathering powder - and I'm most impressed. It's everything I've been told!
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Griffon19.jpg
Oh, I'm not refering to the colour.
Take a GOOD look at them. Most notably, Sandbag #2 hangs over sandbag #1 with zero droop. Like they're actually hardened concrete bags. Lesser, but bad as well, first level sandbag's left tips are airborne and not in the empty ear flap kind of way.
Best suggestion for them I can make: peel them off and come up with a new lump of something to cover the spot, and/or another hatch, air grate, or something.

We have plenty of forests, and you have clearly never seen a full grown English Oak.
Thankee, Lord Cook! :)
Aye, I'm so taken with the periscope that I'm sticking it on all future Griffons and Medusae. Oh, and I should take some pics of the garden tomorrow. I'd quite forgotten.
I must confess to having become a bit too enamoured of thedesign of my little enclosed Griffons. I originally planned to build but a single battery of 3. But now . . .

try and find some jerk-bag Tau player. Tau love Griffons! and by love I mean they're the quickest way to **** off a Tau player. S6 autokills most Tau infantry and AP4 just ruins their day even more. Then you add in the barrage/pinning schenanegans you've got yourself a party.
I remember I played a game once against Tau where I had a griffon that spent the whole game snuggled behind a rock and accounted for 38 firewarriors, an Etherial, and a dozen drones of various types and was unscathed at the end of turn 6.

Oh, those tanks are awesome! Great skills with the plasticard man!
Happily, my mate with the 'Nids also has a Tau force. ;)
Been doing a spot of work today on getting the Griffons together. Lacking wheels, I've been using plasticard offcuts to build to to the 10mm width necessary to fit IG track in place.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Griffon23.jpg
I still haven't found the missing half Russ barrel, so I'm stuck on building 11, not 12 atm. As you can see, I haven't got all the side pieces ready for these . . . yet!
Been working some more on the Griffons today - and a Russ that'll become a Conqueror or Executioner . . . I've forgotten which!

Ive just spent a good 40 minutes flicking over the various pages and i dont know what to say...
You have more firepower here than our British Army can muster....
Im loving the scratch builds... though i have to say... you seem to have an endless supply of tracks... whats the secret?
whats next on the list of things to do when you finished your armoured griffons?
Id love to see a big super heavy... i note that Leviathans seem to be making an appearance on here lately...
Cant wait to see more updates... less DVDs more making rivits lol...

The tracks thing is in part down to keeping all spare bits from kits I've bought, and in part down to buying up spares online, I must admit. I think the point about the British Army is more the fault of our politicians than something in my favour. Actually, I'd love a few hundred Challengers! ;)
I find the SuperSuperheavy route a bit worrying, really. But I'll try for a trio of Baneblades instead! Maybe.

Cheers, John! Yeah, I've spent a couple of hundred quid on plasticard. On the plus side, I've still got loads left, and could knock up another tank regiment, were I not so lazy! :D
Going to try to get the Medusa done tomorrow for a slight change from the Griffons.
Actually Mr P, you've built more firepower than the Brits could muster if you pressed the whole of your population into military servitude, lol.
Looking great as usual though.
Cheers, Faolan! And I've finally - thanks be to Tinners! - solved the problem of having no hull-mounted HBs for all these vehicles. Here's the prototype:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/HB1.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/HB2.jpg

The HB looks ok on the Griffon.

Mr P
Firstly... thank you for sticking your head in my blog. Its much appreciated. I have a feeling despite Greg the Gargants Gargantuant size... he would still get blown away by all your tanks... (plus... gregs an ork so he only hits on a 5+) truely rubbish!!
The Heavy Bolters work really well, and whilst i think they look just a hint long on the side sponsons... as a front mounted gun they look truely spot on...
That said... ive always though side sponson Heavy Bolters didnt have enough room for a breech.... so it might be that yours look great and GWs are too short!!!
Super Heavys are a scary though... and to be honest, the baneblade chasis... at £60 isnt cheap either... but im fasciniated to see your take on some of the big toys...
You clearly have the russ and chimera chassis variants down to a tee... infact... when painted up, i truely dont believe you could tell the difference between your scratch builds, and any manufactured ones.
Thank about it though... it would be awesome to see a big toy on your conveyor belt of tanky destruction....
Have a good weekend
Regards

ps... ok maybe 100 challenger tanks is one or two more than you have but only just!!!!
Cheers, old man! No need to thank me for having a look at thy log, though - you've got some good work in there! I agree the HBs look a bit long on the sides, but I've worked out I need 60 odd to arm my currently planned selection of vehicles, so I'm loath to do anything to complicate the manufacturing process - even changing the length a little! ;)
I set myself the target of completing the first Executioner hull tonight. And she's just off outside to be painted now!

MrP, I see you went with an exhaust system similar to what I had in mind for mine!
as always excellent work mr p, though i've had a thought, you should try that alternate exhaust system, the one where you've got a number of pipes leading out of the one section... Eh refrenc (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Imperial%20Guard/stormblade4.jpg) to that sort of exaust, that said while i was looking i saw another type of exaust that'd add a kick ass bit of feeling to your army with is simplerer to do here (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/machvhb.htm)
Dunno if these ideas help or hinder ya, but hey, there just ideas!
As always lookin forwards to more,
hawke
Chers, gents. Aye, nice simple exhaust! hawke, I will be using that exhaust for the supers, dinnae fear! :)
I've begun painting the Ex. Only begun, mind, not near finished.

And the Griffon and Medusa are very nearly done:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/MrP_01/ChimaeraChassis/Medusa11.jpg
Hmmm... the griffon is nice and impressive, however the meduse feels... to tall. if it were me, i'd lower it a bit into that area currently cealed off by the plasticard just above the mainhull. However, that aside, still fantastic work!
hawke
Cheers, Hawke. Aye, I agree. It's just come out too top-heavy. Future versions will have a fighting compartment 10 or 15mm shorter. Unfortunately, I've a load of Bassies I made the FCs for yonks ago, so they'll all look top-heavy when completed. Teach me to rush ahead!
Right, finally got around to doing a spot of painting. I'm still prevaricating about the last touches to the Medusa, so you'll have to wait a spot for her and the Griffons. But I've done one Executioner and have another two turrets mostly done, with work on the three Conqueror turrets also moving forward.

Hrm, Mr P, don't you think you want to put something into that engine bay and paint it so it's not bright white showing through?
When I did a tank with the cut open screens, I went with the engine from an Italeri Panther kit, worked well.
Cheers, NK! Just buy lots of plasticard, and you too can lose the use of several more shelves to vehicles! ;)
Faolan, you're quite right. I've since knocked up a number of "enginey" bits I'll paint black, highlight with silver, then slip in place. I'll get a few pics up once I get round to it. Unfortunately, using proper engines is a bit pricey, since most of my Russes have perforated backsides, so to speak! :D

I do plan to have a load of Apoc games . . . but I confess I've not actually played more than one to date. And I only fielded about 4,000 or so in it. So, aye, I think there is madness to my method, as you suggest. :D

You ought to turn this into a paying gig, I am sure some fellow gamers out there would pay decent coin for some of your scratch builds.
I'm getting back into making tanks and I just remember how much I hate cutting out track sides... I have no idea how you can put up with making so many.

I know exactly what you mean. I just try to shut down the brain and have the TV or a film on in the background to keep my mind off it.
Dear gods, it looks like a trip to the UK is in order for me.
I can play an Artillery Colonel whilst you manage the heavy armour!
Sounds a good plan, old man! I'll grease the tanks' treads with blood, well, plastic painted to look like blood. ;)
Been doing lots of painting of late - but since it's mostly turrets, not whole tanks, I'll hold off on the photos. I've made bloody loads of Heavy Bolters, though. And I decided to replace some sponsons I must have cannibalised for other stuff.
