View Full Version : Your Favorite Specialist Game

13-08-2007, 21:26
So through some recent polls we have discovered that most players have, or do play one of GW's specialist games. Whitch one is your favorite (this can of course consider rules, models anything)

My personal is Inqusitor with BFG 2nd.

I love Inqusitor for the narrative gameplay and the depth, also ebcause you cans till use 40k models and only need a handful

13-08-2007, 22:19
Definately Battlefleet Gothic. I also like Epic and Warmaster.

I wish they would bring back Man O' War.

Oddly enough, I've just been sniffing round the SG section of GWs website.

It's all fine and well us harping on about how great the SG are (and lets face it, they are that great!) but I guess I ought to buy summat soon....

Currently, I have too many Orks to remember, and loadsa Trakks and Buggies....guess I need to invest in some Bikes, Dreads, Kans, DeffKoptas, and a few other odds and sods.

*sob* It's not easy having a good time. Even buying new models makes my face ache!

Hmm tough choise, i think BFG is my favourate just. I also really enjoy Inq and Blood Bowl alot. Those are my top 3 Specialist Games definatly. Although i haven't had a good game of Blood Bowl for a looong time now.....

14-08-2007, 01:08
Blood Bowl, as it's a break from the grim and the dark to something just plain fun.

I've not played any BB for ages, I should get the board back out and get back to fumbling attempts to pick up the ball. :)

14-08-2007, 01:22
Gotta be Bloodbowl.

14-08-2007, 01:52
I voted Necromunda as it has to me one of the best scenario and story driven systems in all of GWs games, your gangs develope real character and really make the games so much more than it is without that aspect. My Lords of Iron gang is remembered long years after all their gaming is done thanks to this. Individual gangers and leaders beome legendary like my friends Pig Killer who could never be shot out in the open.
I would have considered voting for epic, but you have the last edition listed instead of the current Epic Armageddon, I really disliked epic 40k edition myself.

14-08-2007, 06:32
I voted for the Epic. However as Grimshawl points out the entry in the poll is wrong. My vote goes to Epic: Armageddon not the old Epic 40k.

14-08-2007, 09:45
I voted for Epic, in lieu of Epic Armageddon... althhough that's not to say that i dont love the others...

The thing is, all the SPecialist Games are great, but are so in their own way. Each game is completely different...

14-08-2007, 10:33
Blood Bowl, though I wish SG would also provide support for Warhammer Quest.

14-08-2007, 12:04
Epic. BfG is fun, but in the end I prefer little tanks to little space ships for fun value, and in anycase I prefer Full Thrust for my space ship fix. Nothing has supplanted Epic for my 6mm toy soldier fix though. Haven't been tempted to play any of the others though.

14-08-2007, 21:30
BFG by far. I love the system and the models. I think Epic would be a close second if I could get other people to actually buy their own models and play instead of just telling me how cool my stuff is and leaving it at that...

14-08-2007, 23:43
No competition... Blood Bowl.

There has been no greater game. I have never had a bad game due to an opponent, as you can't help but play the game for fun.

And as it doesn't require more than 20 figures, you can have so many different teams.

14-08-2007, 23:45
Having said that, I have played Epic (Space Marine), Necro and Mordheim, and yes, I would also love support for MoW and WQ.

15-08-2007, 00:39
MORDHEIM definatly

15-08-2007, 01:10
Blood Bowl;
The league rules are brilliant, and it's loads of silly fun.

15-08-2007, 01:59
Inquisitor is the only SG we play reuglarly in my area. the comabt rules are top knotch, and modeling opps are great.

15-08-2007, 03:25
Necromunda, followed by BFG.

I voted necromunda, simply because it has produced many memorable games and characters over the years.

15-08-2007, 05:06
Wheres Aeronautica Imperialis?

15-08-2007, 10:22
It's not specialist game and this poll is for them. So why should it be there?

15-08-2007, 11:01
I voted for Epic, on the grounds that you really meant Epic:Armageddon. I've never played Epic 40k!

All the SG games that I've played are good fun but E:A is my favourite. I haven't played Warmaster or BoFA (although I do own that - just not had a chance to play it yet) but they sound good.

15-08-2007, 11:44
Warmaster for sure :)

Though Warmaster is the only specialist game I ever played, I'd like to play mordheim as well, and I would like to play epic once, though I do not like the 40k setting, im insterted in the ruleset.

Dwarf Supreme
15-08-2007, 17:18
Epic for me, but it's the only current GW game I play.

15-08-2007, 20:11
Why shouldn't it. I don't see Aeronautica Imperialis at any GW store save bunkers... Therefore it is a a specialist game, if not then what would you call it? 40K, wrong. Epic, wrong. BFG, wrong. Fantasy, wrong. So then what could it be other than a Specialist game...

15-08-2007, 22:51
A ForgeWorld game?

15-08-2007, 23:19
It's not specialist game and this poll is for them. So why should it be there?

A ForgeWorld game?

Sadly they are correct. Personelly i think AI is an incredibly complex game that does require skill and good tactical awareness, more so than almost any other game, save for BFG, which i voted for incidently.

Giant warships firing massive projecties and energy beams which would obliterate whole cities in 40K, how cool is that.

Imperial Navy FTW, thats two posts i've just ended that with, lol

Necromunda for me. As has been stated, the development and sense of character that game can provide to a plwer really makes it stand out for me. There might be better choices for a single game, but to play over a period of time Necromunda would be my favourite.

16-08-2007, 05:25

As revford and SonOfUltramar already pointed out, it's Forge Worlds game. Specialist Games division of GW has certain games within it. That list is not defined by anything else than is it under Specialist Games (whether it is played or not in GW or anywhere else is irrelevant). You have see the games in their website.

AI is not on it. AI is not part of Specialist Games.

16-08-2007, 07:22
Well I haven't played any of the other games but back in the day (1996) I saw Epic and Battlefleet Gothic being played.

While Gothic sure looked nice Epic seemed to interest me more. How do you paint something as big as your fingernail?

16-08-2007, 11:00
Thank you for taking your time to read these posts.

When it asks specifically on the poll it does not specify "GW Specialist Games" just, "What is your favorite specialist game and why?" I am herby asking you, the gamer who started the thread in question to add Aeronautica Imperialis to the Poll, or change it to be more specific.

Thank you for you time.

I regard AI in the same league as specialist games, even if the technical definition doesn't include it!

I voted Epic (proviso for Armaggeddon), but was torn between Epic and BFG. Both are just superb, with real tactics and some of the most cunning tricks* I've seen in GW's games. And the scale of them is just well, erm... epic. And combining the two, then that is something special (orbital bombardments and troop drops into large games of epic are just superb - needs about 10,000 pts to get right though)

* By cunning I mean that they allow some superb tactical maneuvers rather than some clever rule combinations.

16-08-2007, 15:43
BB all the way.

Strategy, character, fun, minimum financial investment, plenty of room for variety and perfectly supplemented by beer.

What more could you want in a game.

22-08-2007, 18:36
Out of the choices given I have to say BloodBowl mostly for the same reasons as some other people, it's a break form the usual monotonous rule-sets and absurdly fun along the way. :)

Although I think some other games should've been up there like Warhammer Quest, Space Hulk, and Gorka Morka! Even though they aren't supported anymore I know there are still loyal gamers out there who play them! In fact I think I'll start a new thread just for it. Hehee....

And here it is. :)
Warhammer Quest, Space Hulk, Gorka Morka! (http://warseer.com/forums/sg-fw-games-general-discussion/99616-warhammer-quest-space-hulk-gorkamorka.html)

The Dark One
22-08-2007, 23:21
out of the list you give it's got to be Blood Bowl
but i would have voted for Warhammer Quest if it was there:cries:, by far the best game i have ever played

plague man
25-08-2007, 16:20
i think battle fleet Gothic is the best whats better than big ships and lasers

25-08-2007, 18:55
I voted for Epic, not just for E.A but for all it's incarnations.

Best idea for a game anyone ever had! :)

25-08-2007, 20:02
As long as there is a committed group of us to complete an ongoing campaign, Necromunda is my cup of tea!

Not to throw this thread off the subject, but would Battlefleet Gothic be better if the models were mounted on extendable rods. Would it improve the game dynamic more by allowing ships to change 'altitude'?

03-09-2007, 14:24
It has to be epic, although not played that for a long time.

03-09-2007, 17:22
I'm a Mordheim junky, but that largely due to being a devote fan of 'medieval' fantasy as opposed to 'sci-fi'.

04-09-2007, 03:00
Epic, because it brings 40K in new dimensions. Followed by Necromunda and Inquisitor.

04-09-2007, 09:30
Definitely BFG. It is the one game that is really different in style. Close second is Blood Bowl.

Have fun,

04-09-2007, 09:54
BFG is by far my favourite. Not only in the SG range, but from GW in general. I love the models, I love the rules, I love the background. That all adds up to a specific feeling of the game which is just great.

04-09-2007, 15:07
I miss GorkaMorka in that poll, si I voted for my second favourite: Blood Bowl.

04-09-2007, 15:33
Epic Armageddon is my fav.
This is the game I started with when I first walked into a GW.
For months I was dreaming about all those war machines and engines of destruction backed up by hordes of infantry. The game did not let me down!

Blood Bowl will always have a place in my heart as well.

Inquisitor D'selinas
07-09-2007, 00:23
I voted for Epic, though the vote is really for the Space Marine/Titan Legions version. Space Marine was the first proper Games Workshop game I bought, and have never had a dull game, love it!
Second would be Battlefleet Gothic followed by Necromunda

17-09-2007, 22:41
BFG is by far my favorite yet least played of the Specialist Games that I have played which include: Blood Bowl, Mordheim, Warmaster and of course Battlefleet Gothic.

The rules are simple enough to easily understand but do well to depict huge spaceships pummeling each other with gigantic weapons arrays, torpedoes, and clouds of smaller craft buzzing around a deep, dark space. The story and accompanying fluff are good too!

If I were given a second place vote it would have to be for Mordheim.

18-09-2007, 14:52
Another vote of INQ, here!

And the absence of even a "second preference" comment on BOFA says a lot about the popularity of that waste of effort.

19-09-2007, 02:42
Mordheim for me - it's a wonderful dose of insanity and fish, lots of fun :D

20-09-2007, 00:09
Love Warmaster for those epic battles, that swing back and forth, also because i have not played any other of the specialist games

Capitán Sánchez
20-09-2007, 07:47
I like Mordheim. It's like a small version of WHFB, with nice models.

Thank you

24-09-2007, 19:59
It's gotta be Mordheim for me to, and I'm surprised it hasn't done better so far in this poll ! it has a great story, some really great mini's, and I love the whole "sword for hire" and "whitch hunter" classical fantasy/medieval theme

24-09-2007, 20:45
Where's quest ?? :cries:

Warhammer quest is without question my favourite SG - Mordheim second, then Necromunda then I'd have to say Gorkamorka for the sheer chaotic bloody fun of it :D

The Warlord
25-09-2007, 16:06
Mordheim is my favourite but that and bloodbowl are the onlyones I have played.

Sword Warden
01-11-2007, 11:59
Mordheim; the one and onely!

01-11-2007, 15:02
Battlefleet Gothic, because its OBVIOUSLY the best game GW ever made, not these poor excuses for games we have these days

05-11-2007, 14:01
Epic - the name says it all.

But for sheer Fun (thats fun with a capital f) and pick up and playness Blood Bowl

05-11-2007, 15:38
Voted for INQ here too!

05-11-2007, 16:27
Mordheim. I love the depth of warband formation, experience gain, and the amount of detail player's can add to their games.

06-11-2007, 00:29
Epic - the best way to visit the 41st Millennium for nearly 20 years. :chrome:

But only voted Epic because Space Hulk isn't an SG...
