I was nostalgic for some grittier sci-fi so my brother and I started watching Space Above and Beyond again (the whole one season) and it started pushing me towards wanting to start an IG army. I had a few ideas regarding Doctrines, but I was wondering what others who had seen the show might come up with.

I don't have my IG book with me right now so I can't remember all the doctrines.

For the humans:

-Veterans as I don't remember anyone having decent armour and there were no abhumans so it becomes the only elite option available and there are a few elite squads in SAAB (Angry Angels, Wild Cards, etc.)
-Conscripts to represent invetroes or 'tanks' - poorly trained and mass produced
-Mechanized simply because they always needed their transports to get to the planets they were fighting on
-Special Weapons Squads just to represent the full range of weapons at their disposal

That's all I could remember without the codex.

For the Chigs, Tau would likely work best, as they have the right look, better armour and poor combat abilities, though it would have to be pure Tau for fluff purposes. I'm sure drones could be used to represent advanced tech, and Kroot might be able to sub in for AI, though that is likely pushing it.

Just curious to see what others think.

I didn't think it got more gritty than 40k.

I meant more gritty sci-fi on TV.

It was a while ago I watched it, but yeh I get what you're thinking.

I don't remember the Invitroes being used like conscripts but reading up on the background then yeh that works. Would be pretty easy to make a small 'nipple' on the back of their necks :p

I'm not so sure about mechanised - they weren't using Armoured Fighting Vehicles to scoot around shooting up the chigs, they were just dropping in and acting as light infantry... so maybe take Drop Troops and Light Infantry? I think this represents their dual roles of being both space and land forces quite nicely.

Special Weapon Squads - meh I dunno. I think you can get all the special weapons you need from the 3 veteran squads you'd be taking (Wildcards, Angry Angels etc). I'd take something else instead but if you've the points hanging around for more specialised infantry then go for it.

EDIT: You could use the Xeno-fighers doctrine (against Tau) - this would allow for some great modelling such and embody their hatred of (and experience fighting) chigs.

Agreed with Tau being good for chigs, just give them a coat of gloss-black. You could use imperial servitors to replace Kroot for AIs.

Yeah I think you're right, Drop Troops and Light Infantry would make more sense. Unfortunatley regarding XenoFighters Tau aren't on the list are they? They can already be hit on a 3+ anyway due to their WS2 on regular troops. I just like Special Weapons because of demolitions...I think that's it...

Take last chancers for demo charges, if you can find a way to justify it background wise- You can take a few demo charges on separate units, that come with infiltrate and deep strike, and it doesn't use a doctrine up.

Also, they're one of the few special characters that it seem reasonable to have turn up quite often.... There is only one Yarrick, Hero of Armageddon, but the Guard is plenty big enough to have lots of penal legions ( the book calls them the 13th penal legion, implying another 12 at least), and officers crazy/ filled with imperial fury enough to want to lead them.

And that's assuming you're not using them as counts as commandos, who actually chosen to go on the dangerous mission, rather than having been voulnteered...

I've never really been clear on how Last Chancers worked with the rest of the army; when I originally read the entry it seemed to sound almost like a substitute for playing a fullbown IG army but when I factored in points I started thinking that it could simply be added to any IG army - is this the case?

The Invitroes were used as conscripts during the AI wars about 18 years prior to the Chig invasion. Hope this helps.

Yeah I remembered that, but I'm basing the army more on 'vague' fluff as if I were to follow it exactly, there would be no war between the two races and it would simply be Hammer 40K which would likely involve some kind of construction; perhaps not entirely boring, and it suggests a better future, but not quite what I'm aiming at. Though your point does bring up another interesting idea...an army themed towards the AI war...

Why don't bring in some flyers? I don't know if there is already a company out there producing the SAAB space/aircrafts but if not you could scratchbuild some of them. And they would add some heavy punch to your army.

Yes, last chancers are just a unit to use in an IG army, and one that doesn't take up a useful FOC slot- the second HQ one is not much for the Guard that often.

of course, if you have more money than sense, you can take the drop troops doctrine, and mount any guard infantry squads in Valkyries, for proper air mobile infantry.

I think so far we've come up with the following for doctrines:
Drop Troops
Light Infantry
Veterans
Conscripts

And then possibly the use of Last Chancers

I have no money and if I had sense, I'd probably spend it on other things; that being said I'm hoping to scratch-build some Valkyrie-SAAB Transport amalgamations and probably field them as Armoured Fists (is that what they're called?) so as not to have Doctrines that don't work together (Light Infantry and Drop Troops don't jive with Mech Infantry if I remember correctly).
