Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
Regarding both the films and the books (can't reallycomment on the books as I've only read fotr this past month and just started ttt), which battles, duel, charges and any other moments worth of awe inspiring action are your favourites and most memorable.
for me I have a few, my favourites being that of the members of the fellowship against againast all the gribblies and beasties they have to face, from the eerie watcher in the water, to the Mighty and terrible Balrog, right down to Sam's heroic stand against shelob.
from these i would have to pic of course, the Balrog as i i haven't seen any other duel of the like, and the first memory i have of wathcing the film and seeing Gandalf hold back the Balrog of Morgoth kept me at the edge of my seat for the whole duration... also like how it concluded in the next film as Gandalf slew the Balrog at the the top of the Misty mountains on the ruins of Durins Tower.
coming in second and very closley would be the first sight of a troll, another scene in Moria where the Feloowship are beset by Goblins, which had a cave a troll:p, and seeing the cumbersome beast destroy the burial chamber and all about him in a primitive ferocity and finally alsmot impaling the ringmearer with a spear.
lastly the Last March of the Ents, a wonderful part of the ttt where the ents of Fangorn led by treebeard, bring down the walls of Isengard and imprison the wizard Saruman for his treachery. some great scenes like the ent using the orcs as a weapon, and of course the breaking of the damn and the flooding of isengard.
there are many more I am also keen of such as the storming of the gate of minas tirith where th trolls rampaged through the first line of defenders. The charge of the Rohirrim, both at Helms deep and at the pelennor, and of course the counter charge of the titanic Mumakil.

From the film : Aragorn against the Uruk Hai leader (named somewhat in the film). It must have been specific circumstances, but when we saw it the first time, the whole audience seemed to have held their breath, and applauded when Aragorn beheaded the Uruk...
The scene is burned into my mind since then.
My truly favourite 'Middle Earth' duel isn't from the LotR, btw ;)

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
As they say, LotR is full of win.
But the scenes that most impressed would have to be the prologue and the Battle of Pelennor Fields.

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
I koved the whole 'Cutting the ring from Sauron' part. Boom we all fall down, fantastic!

Nor mine.:p
Favourite from the films? Hmmmm? Eowyn vs Witch King I think, or Aragorn just wading through orcs in the special edition of rotk.

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
The Silmarillion is where it's at
ecthelion of the fountain vs gothmog, lord of balrogs (THE DUEL, I mean come on that was fu cking badass, Gothmog was arguably more powerful than Sauron)
fingolfin vs morgoth
glorfindel vs random balrog
siege of gondolin (THE BATTLE)
battle of unnumbered tears
first age action really put LotR to shame

It IS Good, but mind you, do not expect a "story" such as LoTR
-
Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
it's more like an epic prose poem but in terms of scale everything in LotR really pales in comparison to the stuff in The Silmarillion
-
Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
Yes, the Silmarillion is more like reading, say, a greek epic or a history book. But you can easily skip parts that you don't like, except if you want to get the big picture...

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
Book of Lost Tales (volume I) is excellent too, the account of the Fall of Gondolin in Lost Tales is much more detailed than the one in Silmarillion and it's
fu cking EPIC

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
feanor vs assorted balrogs
fingolfin vs Morgoth
Ecthelion vs Gothmog
It really is all about the silmarillion

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
I'll go with the movies...
Duel- Gandalf VS Balrog in moria.
Battle: Charge of the rohirim on the pellenor fields.
-
Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
Charge of the Rohirrim is amazing. Little tears of joy.
Also really like the death of Boromir (who doesn't?) but was reminded of Sam sticking orcs in Cirith Ungol. 'That's for my old gaffer!' Love it. Go Sam. :D

Me! Boromir was my favourite!
Turin vs Glaurung was pretty good, for me.
In the movie... Uhhh... Gimli and Legolas' competition on the walls of Helm's Deep... Loved those fights!
-
Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
I loved him too! But what a death! Lol. What a great way to go. Carving up Uruk-Hai to save the young whipper-snappers.
Great hair acting by Mr Sean! :)
Gotta agree with Gimli And Legolas.
Also does anybody else like Legolas shooting down a Nazgul on Fell Beast? (Or did I make that one up? Having a strange memory moment! Lol. :D

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
I love the rohan charge at pelenor fields imo best bit in whole set
-
Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
Guys come on. I know that we could all be saying Valar battles and stuff, but it just has to be Gandalf V Balrog.
-
Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
The real battle of the Palenor fields, not the crap movie version, 1 whole chapter of awesome :)

Haldir vs Uruk Hai ... ha ha JK, that was totally dumb to have Haldir at Helm's deep. wtf?

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
From the film;
I really liked the Last Alliance of Men and Elves battle. Visually stunning, and also unexpected (i managed to avoid any spoilers off the net) So pleased they put that in the film.
From the books;
Personally my favourite epic battle was the War of Wrath, the battle the ends an Age of middle earth. It lasted 42 years.
The Valar are in this battle, along with a host of Elves. Many of the Elves were Vanyar (fairest and most noble of the High Elves. Descendants of Imin, the first Elf to awake ) there were also Noldor and Edain. The Valar were lead by Eonwe, the herald of Manwe (i remember this guy from Merp, he was very very powerfull), he was the most skilled warrior among the Maiar.
Morgoth sent forth an epic army of men (mostly easterlings), orcs, balrogs and dragons.
The size of the armies were so great that the fighting extended throughout the North. Countless Orcs were slain and most of the Balrogs and Dragons were destroyed except for a few that went into hiding deep underground. Morgoth was afraid to come forth himself, and stayed in Angband. (this battle is the reason balrogs and dragons are rare)
Morgoth released his winged Dragons led by Ancalagon the Black as a last attempt to stop the Host of the Valar. The Dragons descended in a storm of thunder, lightning, and fire, and the Host of the Valar retreated. The battle in the air lasted a day and a night. Before dawn Ancalagon fell from the sky and destroyed the towers above Angband.
Most of the other Dragons were killed and the Host of the Valar were victorious. They entered Angband and Morgoth fled deep underground. When he was cornered he begged for pardon but instead he was bound with the chain called Angainor which the Valar had used to imprison him long ago. His iron crown was made into a collar for his neck and the two Silmarils were taken from it.
After this battle the Noldor were pardoned, and allowed to return to the Undying Lands. (The Valar had previously exiled the Noldor because they had killed other Elves in the Kinslaying)

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
Best duel (sort of) The crazy kami-kaze style charge of the orc captain in Moria (book only) storms into Balins tomb (alone!), parries a blow from Boromir, dodges an attack from Aragon (by doing a barrel roll I assume) and delivers a fatal blow to Frodo.
Bam!
That was pretty much the coolest and most epic thing an Orc has ever done in Lotr. I even converted an Goblin Captain to represent this guy, only to find out that he was most likely a black Uruk from Mordor,
Greatest big scale event : The charge of the Rohirrim against the cavalry force of the Haradrim including Theoden killing Suladan (did gw name him or is the name in the book, I couldnt find it) AND slicing up the banner.

Amen, to that. (Shouts) He isn't even supposed to be there, let alone die.
Watched RotK special edition the other day and quite liked Gandalf versus the Witch King and Sam on the warpath.

Re: Heroic duels and epic battles. favourites ?
My favorite is definitely Bilbo's smoke ring vs. Gandalf's smoke ship.
