Marduk of the 34th Grand Host, Word Bearers Legion
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Y...0/IMG_1383.JPG
I've got to know a great deal more about these creatures over the last century or so, since that first disconcerting encounter, and one thing I've seen time and again is that dismissing them as simple, unreasoning brutes is a fast route to the graveyard (or more likely their stomachs). – Commissar C. A Coterie of Word Bearers brings word to Marduk that a vein of tainted metal, thrumming with the power of the Warp, has been ignorantly used in the construction of the docks on the Iratus Sea, gradually tainting the seawater. If the docks can be secured, the somnolent power within the docks themselves can be used to cause a warp breach underwater, allowing a stream of daemons to follow the vital canals and pipes inland – and infiltrating Ravines Umbrage, Kotkovo and Mordporof.

Ank Mork-Gork, a Big Mek in the employ of Waa-Snazgutz, makes the final adjustments to the whirly bits of his 'Faraway Cage'; a contraption resembling nothing more than an upturned and stripped umbrella, holding the dangling stasis-casket of Hieriel de Heirarra, prophet of Vaul Cerridwen. The little remaining moisture in the freezing air turns to a dusting of frost as the psychic potential builds. The mek's plan is to use the Prophet as a psychic magnet, drawing 'wyrd-wotsits' towards it.
+4-080613-811-M41
A branch of the 34th Grand Host assaulting Ravine Umbrage sweeps up the frozen coast of the Iratus Sea. Imperial forces surrender the Leonine and Maxilla Docks with little resistance, and the Word Bearers dig in while the rebel PDF engineers arrive to begin construction to allow the ritual to build.

The Mek, and his entourage, vanish from their camp in the Fractured Lands and reappear, with a heavy 'thump' of displaced snow and a crackle of heavy ice, halfway across the continent of Thrymyr Nørt. Mork-Gork straightens up and consults his Jeepy-Ess, his surprised expression turning to an attempt at 'leaderly' as he realises the boy are looking at him.
"Er. I fink we're across da sea." A heavy creaking groan resounds across the area and – prompted by Giblet the grot – the Mek peers a bit closer at the Jeepy-Ess. "Nah, tell a lie. We're on the sea." He looks up, and points at a low cliff. "Let's walk over dere."
After a brief pause and another threatening groan of the ice, he corrects himself.
"Acksherly – change of plan. Leg it!"

Arshak's Coterie is joined by Dark Apostle Marduk as they hurriedly occupy the recently-abandoned defences of the docks, determined to see off this unexpected attack. A Forgefiend growls smoke and steams in the chill air.

Slipping and sliding, the orks clamber up the cliff and spot the Astartes. "Beekees to fight!" they yell gleefully.

Both sides race to the centre to make the most of the cover while the deffdredd and Forgefiend trade fire.

"Nah boss, nah. I never run off!" The Mek protested over the squawk-box as Word Bearer boltshells whistled overhead. "Don't worry – da proffit's safe 'ere wiv me. Turns out da Faraway Cage worked even better than wot I fort – just dere woz so much wyrdy-stuff dat it dragged us to where it woz, instead of da uvver way 'round." He winced and held the earpiece away from his head as Snazgutz' voice got louder. Giblet the gretchin looked up at the Mek sympathetically.
"Nah, boss... Nah... Yeah... Nah... I..." Ank Mork-Gork put his hand over the speaker and nodded at Giblet, who saluted keenly. "Giblet, I gotta go." the Mek said. "Tell... uh... tell Grimdaz dat 'e's in charge 'til I get back."
Giblet looked concerned, but scuttled off.
"Olright boss, I'll see yer in a bit." The mek nodded to the dismayed boyz around him, adjusted a worky-bit on his shokk attack gun, and disappeared in a crackle of green energy.

"Yoo know I sed I'd kill yer last? ....I lied."
With a last blow, the Forgefiend's warpmetal head is struck off, with a geyser of hot ichor. Da Terminatork exults over the destruction, and the Word Bearers begin to fall back.
The close-run victory has left Marduk missing; though the 34th Grand Host are in a good position to mount a rescue mission – or a full-scale assault to remove the ork's bridgehead.
Meanwhile the orks have established a foothold in the east. Doubtless Snazgutz will plan to move on this rich vein of warp-power in his aim to find a way to use Hierel de Hiererra more aggressively.

Here's an update from the workbench showing a Hive Guard converted from the really old hive Tyrant, and a Screamer-Killer Carnifex. They're 95% done, although I'm still having the problem of Agrax Earthshade drying a bit 'chalky' in places. I'm being very careful to shake it thoroughly and not apply too much, but it's still happening, so I think I must have a bad batch. I'll try buying another pot and see what happens. :(
Awesome log chaps, thoroughly inspiring stuff! All of the armies are looking great, the Word Bearers in particular are fantastic!
Keep up the great work

WIP Dire Avengers

I'm experimenting with painting my aspect warriors in the craftworld scheme. I liked the idea of the Kraken disaster causing profound cultural shifts beyond their increased use of wraithconstructs, and reasoned that every surviving member of Iyanden would become a guardian first and foremost – which has resulted in the aspect shrines being relatively oversubscribed and their teachings becoming enmeshed with everyday life. Obviously this is a big threat for craftworld eldar; and I wanted to show them 'losing the path' through this conflation.
Plus, yellow and blue is boss.
I'm glad you like the colours, lol, coz I don't, I think GW has a habit of painting up soldiers looking like clowns.. nothing realistic about them at all, even if its in a Warhammer 40K universe :P
I like the idea, its a good theme.
think the frosted/pastel yellow on the rangers and autarch works really well (though it does look like a lot of effort!).
will the warwalker be keeping its vivid vibrant yellow or will you be muting it to match the armour on the infantry?
are the avengers going have purple plumes to match the hair of the others, or are you going for a different colour?
Thanks, and yes, the aim for everything is to have the yellow a pastel hue to match the Autarch etc; I want it to look less strident than the Imperial/ork equivalent. Pastels are tasteful, doncherknow, and I want that in my Eldar. [/cup of tea]Quote:

Again, most probably. I'm tempted to do stripes of black, white and purple to help them stand out from Guardians; but on the other hand, they already stand out because the guardians are converted... Hmm.Quote:
are the avengers going have purple plumes to match the hair of the others, or are you going for a different colour?
On a related note, does anyone have any hair tufts/plumes I can poach for my Guardian jetbikers and wraithguard?
Horses for courses, of course, but I think that the visual impact of the game is vastly enhanced by unrealistic colour schemes.Quote:

I like some of my stuff to look muted – Imperial Guard are a good example – but even there I think it's an important aesthetic consideration to have a good accent colour and pay attention to contrast in order to make them stand out.
After all, you're not supposed to see camouflaged soldiers in real life; but tabeltop gaming is, at least in part, a visual medium.
Anyway, yellow and blue are a lovely colour pair; and it's been a fun experiment to add in both turquoise and magenta as accent colours. Using bright pastel tones has been a great breath of fresh air for me, and has definitely given my painting head a godo workout :)
True, but still :)

At this point in the war, reinforcement notices had reached several nearby planets. Some answered the call to repay old debts to the governor of Frigia, others to fulfill dreams of glory. Still, Frigia was a distant and unimportant entity; and many planetary governors preferred to keep their armies close at hand, to ward off potential Tau strikes of opportunity. The Brightsword Protectorate's expansionist plans were well-known, and most Governors in the sector had grown increasingly conservative and jittery about sending their forces afield.
Nevertheless, enemy advances on Frigia had drawn in many forces, swelling the Penitent Crusade that hung in orbit. Mass Imperial Guard transports from the Richenbach and Hesiod systems were plighing their way through the turbulent warp to reinforce the embattled sysytem, and even some of the famed Clinth Commandos had been sighted.
The Astartes, commonly the first to respond to Imperial distress, had provided a typically haughty and divided front. While strike forces of Space Wolves and Carcharadons had made planetfall early in the campaign, Chapter Master Kanatai of the Emperor's Hawks and First Brother Sarapis of the Sons of Spectra had given a negative response – the first citing his forces' deployment against rebels and orks across the Boten Cloud Nebula, the latter seeing no reason to explain to 'lesser men'. The Stars of Dorn and Emperor's Hammers, both from neighbouring sectors of space, had either declined to respond, or the astropathic messages they received had been lost or misinterpreted.
It was pure chance that the Novamarines were nearby, and in a position to respond. Fresh from their successful defence of Throne in the Tonnabruggias system, Captain Mercian had begun a slow sweep towards the rimwards entrance of the Hyperion Warp Corridor, with the intent of returning to Honourum, far from the Antona Australis sector, when they received the distress message. Their small fleet drew into the system from the rim, and were horrified to find space cobwebbed with tyranid vessels, all seemingly searching for something. With hindsight, it is likely the tyranids of Hivefleet Dagon were attempting to recontact orphans of Splinterfleet Cerberus on the surface of Frigia. The presence of a bioform closely resembling the reports of the 'Old Growler' Prime Warrior from the surface was an especially worrying development. Had Dagon contacted Frigia already, and drawn up the information on this successful genotype?
The Novamarines, all-too-aware of the threat posed by Dagon after the events on Macragge, immediately ordered boarding assaults against the Tyranids, aiming to disrupt their telepathic contact and slow reinforcements to the system.

Sabotage (Zona Mortalis expansion)
A warm, spore-laden fog hung over the spongy surface of the cavern. Tiny flesh-beetles skittered over writhing digestion grubs. With a crackle of splitting resin, a pink sphincter-portal tightened spastically. Its meat turned grey, then split, weeping a blackened fluid as the meltacutter cut it open. Brother Ynnos, only newly advanced from the Scouts, pushed through the remaining burnt material warily, his feet light and his bolt pistol held up in front of him. The floor in the chasm spasmed and puckered softly around his boot, drawing back from the cool plasteel. The air was filled with buzzing and sonorous arrhythmic thumps.
'Clear.'
Even the vox seemed slowed and strange inside the vessel. The Astartes had fought in every manner of warzone, from chirping sweat-jungles to the sweetapple orchards of Throne. Nothing was like fighting the tyranids.
Sergeant Nepoidon drew up alongside Ynnos, and placed a hand on his pauldron – though whether this was meant to steady Ynnos, or to derive some familiarity himself, wasn't clear to the battle brother.
'Stinking tyranids,' the gnarled veteran began; and his casual disgust did more to reassure the shaken Ynnos than he liked to admit. 'Give me an honest fight against the greenskins any day.' He turned away, and used his power maul to indicate two gelid, muscular masses on the far side of the chamber.
'More of these. Burn 'em.' The Space Marine boarding party had been destroying the fleshy pink lumps for perhaps half an hour as they pushed through the eerie vessel. In truth, no-one knew whether they served a vital purpose to the running of the craft, but with little else to go on, Captain Mercian had opted to destroy anything that stood out.
Nepoidon watched as the four marines under his command fanned out; two priming krak charges while Ynnos and the other novitiate covered the remaining sphincter-portals. He bowed his head slightly to concentrate as a faint hissing came through on the command channel of the vox. He strained his Lyman's ear, squinting unconsciously. Were those faint words?
He blinked in surprise as the line broke into a series of stuttering farts that Nepoidon realised was boltgun fire. He blink-clicked a locator rune to find the Captain, and began to walk back towards the tattered remains of the portal. Without turning his head, he toggled the squad vox. 'Follow me, Novamarines. Looks like this thing's got an immune system.'

Nepoidon walked backwards down the wracking corridor. The microfauna and flora seemed distressed. The two marines fell in behind him as he issued orders to gather up the injured. Six Astartes were dead, including three of the vaunted First Company. Thirteen more were badly hurt. Worse still, Captain Mercian had been downed, though he would live.
The sergeant shook his head grimly. The number of hive ships was already in the dozens. The Novamarines didn't have the numbers to maintain this assault.
'Fall back to the Assault Boat. We're going to have to rethink this plan.'
Nice to see the novamarines getting an outing again (supported by some praetors I see). Does this mean we will be seeing more Apologist marines, or are you sticking with the equally epic eldar?
