Thank you breaze! I'm not sure if it's true but maybe I'm going grittier. Maybe! Perhaps it's time for some wood elves soon to level it out lol.

Hope you like them and I post almost daily on my facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/jonaswideenminiatures
Will try and post more stuff here too. I have a lot on my plate, as they say. Anyway, I made a tutorial on how I paint banners and freehand if you are interested?
It is here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1536810&type=3
I can put the tutorial up here too if you want.
Here you can see how I go about when I paint a banner. Feel free to share and ask questions, discuss!
I realize that much of how I paint banners are in the way I paint things. I do not think much when I paint, I just do. Basically I add rough sketches at first of how the image looks like in my head and then i push around some paint until it looks alright.
But there are some basics.
First of a quick sketch on some paper. And then for this time I cut out the banner from normal drawing paper. It sucks up the watered down paint guite good and becomes quit sturdy when finished.
I use watered down paint and let it soak into the paper a couple times, to get the pigments of the acrylics in there. This will create a durable and slightly rubbery piece of material to work with and you can shape it to some extent after your own will!
If you cut up the shape in more intricate designs or torn or such, you can bend and shape it more than just a rectangular and intact one. Some practice on this might be quite handy before creating your masterpiece.

Alright, lets start. First I sketch it up on the flag roughly where I want all the parts. In this case I went with a simple design(not so many details).
Now, I missed to take a pic between the start on the skull and rough finish, but the colors and technique is the same as the scroll thingie. Dark first, then highlight and the higher up you go in lightness you paint smaller and smaller details.

Now for the background and effects. Same here, go dark first, roughly where you want it and depending on what pattern/shapes you want. In this case I wanted a magic flow around the skull. Dark blue->Turqouise->Turq+white and so forth until pure white. The brighter the color, the smaller the details get. In this stage I added highligts around the skull and on the scroll/pennant and also darkened down areas, added more details. Mainly poking around fixing stuff.

Now we come to the text. I use thin paint first to put down roughly where the letters will land. Then its just a matter of filling them out and tweak them in. Here I used green and red to add around the edges(faintly) to add a slightly magical effect. And then trim them in with white around some parts of the letters to tighten it up.
I tore the banner a bit with a sculptingtool, then soaked it in watered down black a couple times to make it stiff. Then drybrushed/shaded with dusty colours. And then bent the flag a bit with my fingers and a brush. If you bent to hard or at a critical angle you will leave marks that look unnatural, so a bit of practice might be good here. If things go bad, sometimes you can bend it back and even flatten creases with the end of the brush or something else that is suitable.
And then the final stage where you poke around and add details or tighten stuff some more. And finished!
Cheers for looking and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. /Jonas

Those are some crazy freehand skills!
Nice kaotic minis. :)
Uh, wow! thanks for doing the tutorial. I would very much like to see those banners added to some miniatures.
Thank you all! Here is a wip! It's meant to be for a customer who wants it on his knight. Not much left on it! But I feel it lacks something. Hmm... Attachment 215751
Oh my god....
Wow that is some really great painting there.
King of banners !
Excellent looking banners. and love the old models...your frehands are amazing as always
Thank you all, glad to see that this place still lives a bit!
I'm just about finished with the iron hands k Ightfield banner, just needs a bit of weathering and shaping and it's time for the next banner.
I also made a huge mistake with the knight banner, but I'll tell you all about that later with the picture!
Stay tuned!

Well, there you go!
I got this comission to paint a knight banner for a iron hands knight.
The size made me rethink how I paint, since it's six times larger than a chapter Standard. But this turned out pretty good I think!
I made a big mistake though. I based the banner with a matt black, and then painted all the details, and outlined them with a more glossy black. This made it look weird irl. But, nothing bad that doesn't have anything good with it! I repainted the whole negative space and made it look better, and also weathered it.
As for details and layout I went for alot of details in a few areas. I could have added tons of details but I think that would have made a mess out of it all. The idea with a banner and heraldics are to have it visible from afar.
Anyway, hope you like it!
On to the next banner!

I'll put this one up for scales.
