An Unholy Alliance - Khorne and Nurgle (Please Comment)

Log for my son's mixed Khorne and Nurgle SM army. He has about 4000 to 5000 points worth.

Looking for any suggestions for improvements with the attached, remember that anything painted has been done by my six year old son so suggestions need to be achievable with his level of brush control, so highlighting for example is out at the moment.

Pretty much finished building my son's Plague Reaper I'm building him for Christmas. I'm not too happy with the tubs so I may re do them, I'll see how they look once they have the green slime in them:

Also built him a Brass Scorpion, managed to knock this together in about 30 minutes, I feel it could look a bit more mutated than it does?

Here is his best painting effort so far (I've done about five minutes of tidying up on it for him):

I'll add in the rest of the collection over time.

Re: An Unholy Alliance - Khorne and Nurgle (Please Comment)

Decided I'd update this as my son was requesting that I post his latest creations as he loves looking at CMON and on here at other people's projects.

FW Bloodthirster - in need of repair

Karanak - I think he needed a little less black ink myself:

Chariot for Skulltaker, it looks blacker than it is in the photo. Based on a Chaos Chariot but made wider to support Skulltaker who is mounted on a normal 40mm base:

He's done most of the building himself, I've supplied know how (what little I have) to assist his ideas (both modelling and paint) and I've also done any cutting with the craft knife. Everything else he has done himself.

Please be kind as he will be reading this and he is only six - constructive feedback welcome!

Everything looks really nice, but I would make sure the bases all look the same, so the army looks a bit more like they belong to eachother.

    Other than that, superb work!

did he paint those latest models?
if so then it's a major improvement over the original bloodthirster, they're much better than my efforts at his age!
(mine were probably about the same as the bloodthirster)

Good point about the bases, I've a feeling that some of the models will be rebased when my next lot of skull bases turn up.

He's painted all of them; but I've done a small amount of touching up where he has missed bits or gone over the "lines", although the latter hardly happens these days.

I must admit I'm impressed at how much his painting has improved looking at that Bloodthirster from six months ago. I don't think I've really had a good look at his earlier work before now. I've noticed that his brush/penmanship has really improved thanks to regular painting and because he has physically has matured over the last few months.

I've also found that switching from my traditional approach of using a single colour then highlighting to a glaze/wash based approach has also made big improvements for him.

Thanks to both of you for the comments.

Another weeks worth of progress from the boy, as always click for larger pics.
Skull Taker, caused nothing but arguments this one, I'm reasonably happy with the result but still needs some tidying up:

The boy wanted him to have a whip and wings as he sees Skull Taker as a mini Blood Thirster rather than a large Blood Letter.

Soul Grinder, this one was done in half the time, go figure:

Khorne colours for this one, plan is to add in a Nurgle themed Soul Grinder at some point, although that will require a lot more conversion work.

All of these are work in progress.

First up is Ku'Gath, apparently I'm going to be painting this one:

GW Direct Only Herald, got Jack to slap on the remaining red wash and brass I'd made for him rather than waste it:

    Kit bashed Khorne Dreadnaught:

Once these are finished it'll be on to Skarbrand, the basic model is finished but it needs some work on the axes, tis Jack's first go with greenstuff.

Nearly finished Ku'gath, final tidy up to do:

Can't say I'm pleased with how I've painted him, me thinks I need some major time practising painting skin as I really struggled with the big areas on him. Had to stop myself taking a hammer to him as I got that fed up with the results I was achieving. Wish I'd made my son paint him rather than letting him talk me into painting him. :cries:

Oh, don´t be sad, little one
Cool mini diorama you build there, and the paint job is not bad at all.
I´m astounded by the abilities of the other little one.
We are going to see a real cool chaos army, aren´t we!
    Keep yourselves motivated, guys

    Thanks for the comments warflag!

This weeks work from Jack (click for larger as always), Direct only Herald:

I think he may need to go over him again as I feel hes over inked him again.

    FW Psykers:

These I'm really pleased with, although they could have done with a special base, may be we'll build them and the rest of the Renegade command into a removable diorama.

Next week he has to finish off his Kitbashed 'Naught and I'm planning on getting the rest of the command retinue...

Wow, nice Ku'Gath diorama you have there. It is fun when you have some faimly with you in the miniature scene. Currently trying to get my Dad intrested in Blood Bowl.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!

This weeks update is Epidemius and a Nurgle Champion along with a fallen Cardinal for my son's renegade command squad. It should have been the Dreadnaught but somebody got distracted with Epidemius turning up.

    Epidemius:

    Nurgle Champion and fallen Cardinal:

Click for larger as always. Comments and suggestions always welcome.

I should point out that the last two will probably be rebased as we are planning on making a diorama that will hold all of the command squad and each of the figures on that diorama will be removable. The diorama will be based around a sacrificial altar, not very original but fitting I think.

Next week should be the leader of the command squad, his kill crazy son and a creepy guy that acts as their familiar. Still left to source is the daemon possessed of the leader and the Khorne champion. Once we have that its on to the meat of the army.

His Chaos Daemon army needs some beasts of Nurgle, can't make up my mind if green stuffing them from scratch would be cheaper or not.

Some real nice conversions and painting here. I love the Karnak
Only thing I would suggest is a bit of watered blue wash on the light blue areas of the Large demons.
Keep it up I enjoy looking at these pics..

You let a six year old, a brush, and a FW bloodthirster get within 12 meters of each other?
    You are either

    Very Wealthy
    Very Foolish
Or you love you son VERY much

However im absolutley floored by the quality, six years old?

If he has fully painted armies at roughly the quality of Epidimius, he must put alot of guys 3-5x his age to shame at the local clubs.

Oh and 12 years down the line tell him to post his latest work if this forum is still here, and if the world is still here...

Im guessing itll be 'Eavy Metal quality byt then!

Thanks for the complements. You are right about the wash on the blue, the FW one needs some TLC and I'll probably get him to freshen up the paint job while he is there.

Thanks for the compliments. I'd choose foolish out of that list as I trust him to work hard to paint to the best of his ability. Give them trust and responsibility and they will usually flourish.

At the moment only HQ and heavy choices in the FOC have been painted to this standard, troops have only been very basically painted with no highlights/washes yet applied. However they have been left in such a way that he can go back over and finish them off properly at a later date. We did the troops first to improve his general brushmanship then applied that to the show pieces of his armies.

Bonus work in progress. The son of the turned commander, and the wife of the commanders gimp:

The near naked one needs some highlights on his skin (mostly around his face) to add depth and some tidying up as there appears to be glue between his arm and body. The son needs some general tidying up, some detail adding to the skin of the baby and some water effect adding to the gore at the back of the baby. Enigma figures are hard work to paint and my son struggled with the very fine details on the models but I think that they are great looking models.

Re: An Unholy Alliance - Khorne and Nurgle (Please Comment)

For this weeks output from Jack I got him to try the new GW washes. I think that they are very good at what they do, however I suspect that unless you can mix in other colours (yet to try this) the single tone reds, greens, and blues might become a little limiting. The black and browns are very very useful, they speed up adding detail like nobody's business and our home made washes (made with Vallejo mediums) can't really compare for single touch coverage as its very pigment heavy nor its "stickyness".

Nurgle Daemon Prince (click for larger):

This was done from scratch with the washes in mind. Worked up from scorched brown to graveyard earth to kommando khaki before applying the green wash. The bone is a base of foundation grey, kommando khaki, bleached bone followed by a focused wash of the mud wash then an all over wash of sepia. Really pleased with the bone as this has been a problem area in the past. Flesh is a base of rotting flesh, one to one mix of rotting flesh and tentacle pink, covered with the red wash. The black wash was used to shade in the relevant areas.

    Kitbash Dreadnaught:

This is a normally painted 'naught covered with the black wash, its not bad for the effort put in...

Re: An Unholy Alliance - Khorne and Nurgle (Please Comment)

Been a bit slow on the update front as we've had trips to GW HQ, making a Space Hulk board, and actual 40K games eating into our painting time. Still, to make up for the lack of updates I've a bumper crop of shots from the past week or so of painting.

First up is the commander for Jack's renegade army. I think he has managed to capture the charismatic baptist look that I thought he should have, I didn't want to go to "chaos" with the look as he has meant to have caught the Imperium on the hop and still be able to charm "normal" people.

Here is the completed squad, only one missing is the commander's wife, I've still not found a model that I'm happy with, all are either too obvious looking or too sluttish.

Here are two weird dog looking things we were very kindly given at a recent Con. They where painted in about 2 minutes flat, overbrush of blood red, red wash with bleached bone followed by a sepia wash on the bone.

The plan is to use them in a similar fashion to Cortex's Eagle. In fact the whole command squad will be based of an Inquisitor Lord from the Daemon Hunter's codex as I can't get the flexibility that we need from the Renegade Command Squad in IA5.

Time for some love for Nurgle. Ten Plague Bearers, done entirely with washes (bar some tentacle pink and skull white):

    Some close ups:

Really pleased with them, the washes are made for Nurgle.

and some Nurglings (I did say this was a big update):

Not happy with these, they could do with some more work and I'd like suggestions.

    Time for some more Khorne:

Note that the flames aren't finished and I'd like some suggestions for them other than the traditional white/yellow/orange/red work up for Jack to try out on them.

Thats it for this week, thanks for looking as always!
