Snakes of Ithaka - Iron Sakes Marines

This was supposed to be the first squad of a crusade army but I'm strating to think (depending on peoples reactions to them) I might do the whole army in IS colours.

They're far from display quality but I wasable to knock out the squad in under a day (and when I've got almost 100 more marine to paint that's a big plus!)

I opted to deviate from the official colour scheme by not makingthe chapter icon blue. I'm not sure if you agree (please let me know!) but I figured with the predominant use of white, red and silver already, it didn't really need a coloured icon.

I'm posting to hopefully get some help with the bases. When I modelled them I was planning on doing them in urban rubble/wreckage with some small pacthes of snow to brighten things up, but I'm not sure if now the grey/white of the abse will compliment the modelsm or blend too much with them. Maybe a wet brown muddy colour with some patches of dead static grass and mud weathered up the greaves? any other/better suggestions?

They look good, I agree with you on the bases, they make the models look a bit dark. you could try to minimise the weathering on the marines so they still look clean.

U could make the dirt a light colour.
EDIT: Lovely models BTW, but i don't really agree with u on the black snakes. I just think they should be canonical.

I like the scheme. I think it looks good.

I'd probably avoid an urban theme with the bases, as I think you are right; it would not compliment the models well. A brown soil with scattered clumps of green static grass should look nice. The green grass will contrast well with the red on the models and make them stand out.

Very nice, although I'd personally go for a slightly more blue steel look. Shouldn't they have an apothecary in there somewhere?

Oh man thats priceless, consider it sigged. Those iron snakes look good, I thought about painting a couple up for a long while after reading the book. I would consider doing the bases in a lighter shade with some green static grass to really make them pop. Cant wait to see some more pics when they are fully finished.

Technically ye, each IS squad has it's own apothacary, but as, with the traists system, it's a choice between a vet sergeant and an apothacary I opted for the vet, as it seems these are more essential to the feel of the squad than the apothacary (who could be off with the other half of the squad somewhere else)

What colours did you use for the white

spacewolf grey then skull white. It took 3 oats of space wold grey to get a decent base though. I probably should have started with shadow grey or fenri gey then put on a space wolf grey base. then it took about 4 oas of skull white and finally a glaze of skull white:water:glaze medium (1:12:4) to give it the smoothness

Time for an update. After some experimentation, I kind of went with every idea. There was originaly static grass on there but it didn't look right do I went for a colder look and added the snow to add some brightness. I also modified the crappy number on the right shoulder pad to be a block of colour and a band of parchment with the squad name on as per canonical Iron Snakes.

They are proving increasingly difficultt o photgraph. Might be time to build a lightbox afterall.

I'm pretty much sold on doing the IS as the whole army so for my own reference (and anyone else who's interested) this is the various recipes:

Armour:
- basecoat P3 pig iron
- Drybrush boltgun metal
- Highlight/blend boltgun metal:mithril silver 1:1
- extreme highlight mithrilsilver
- wash with Tamiya Smoke

Chest Eagles:
- basecoat bestial brown
- highlight P3 Brass balls
- wash with chestnut ink

White:
- basecoat Fenris Grey
- basecoat space wolf grey
- 3 -4 coats of sull wjite
- glaze skull white:water:glaze medium 1:12:4

Base:
- basecoat shadow grey:dark flesh 3:1
- add bleached bone to base mix and drybrush
- drybrush with bleached bone

remember that the snakes are spartan themed so maybe add some combat shields...

also wanted to do a iron snakes kill team after i read abnett's new book but I got way to many marine armies anyways, so maybe in the future

These are all looking incredible, first decent Iron Snakes I've seen. And another plus, they're painted. You mentioned the last step in the armor is "Tamiya Smoke" what is that?
