Qdeu's Plog of Bizarre (Mordheim and 40k)

    Hello All,

This plog will be used to showcase some of my finished projects. Currently I only have photos of my dwarf warband for mordheim, because the camera battery died on me before I had the chance to shoot some of my growing Tau army.

Before anyone asks Mordheim is a specialist game, made by games workshop and I would strongly recommend it to anyone, due to the incredible atmosphere and low starting costs(a warband is around 15miniatures).Be warned though that the game is very terrain intensive.I have a whole cabinet filled with houses and still need to make some more in order to fill a 4'x4' table. One of them is used as the backdrop for my pictures. Tommorow I will try to post some photos of the ruined city, of course if you'll be interested. So enough me jabbering, time for some minis:

These are the dwarves I currently have finished(3 more are awaiting bases and dullcoat). From left to right - Engineer, Noble,Two trollslayers and a Crossbow-armed Thunderer

The highlights are a bit washed out, but you may still notice that my painting style is based on washes. It produces perfect shading on the highly detailed metal dwarves.

Here are two shots of the hired swords I have painted:

    Warlock, Ogre and Halfling scout

I try not to limit myself to using only GW minis, instead take the ones I think are best, so the Engineer comes from Heresy Miniatures and the Warlock and Ogre come from Ilyad Games.

The pictures per post limit forces me to spread my photos.

Here are some snotlings, I've had laying in my bitz box for about 15years (it makes me feel so old:cries. They were a gift from my buddy and when I felt a need to do something crazy I whipped them out, added a barrel from the imperial cannon ad voila - two snotlings that try to look more intimidating by painting their own version of a squig on a barrel, in game terms they will be used as a goblin armed with a mace and dagger (the tiny spear doesn't seem too lethal).

The text on the back is: "we wuz legion" for all you Chaos marine players out there.

That's all for today, expect more tomorrow and feel free to ask away.

Lovely stuff, a really good paint-job on all the models, and the snotlings are really cute.
The most common first name is Mohammed, and the most common surname is chen.

Therefore: If anyone does anything anywere, it was probably Mohammed Chen.

Nice stuff so far...what other Mordheim you got to show?

Faves so far has to be the Ogre and the Engineer...

Makes me want to start painting my dwarf warband, well done.

An interesting and unique painting style you have...I like it!

Reminds me of the Discworld covers.

Thank's a lot for all the kind comments. I'm personally suprised that my minis stood up to the photography challenge(usually it reveals many hidden flaws).

I'm a huge discworld fan myself, but never thought my paintstyle is simillar. I believe that the ogre muscles are the most "Josh Kirbyish"(he is the cover artist mostly known for the discworld illustrations).

I've got a few other painted minis, but they need to be dullcoated, otherwise I won't be able to take any decent photographs. Unfortunately it's below zero outside, so spraying is impossible. However I'll post pictures of my city ruins tomorrow, I hope you'll find them interesting.

Very nice, I'm a big Mordheim fan myself (currently playing beastmen, have played skaven as well). I'm especially fond of the "squig", very inventive. Looking forward to the terrain.

Hi, as promised here are some pics of terrain and my tau army. Unfortunately the light is rather crap at the moment, so some colors look a bit funny.

Nevertheless here's a group shot of the painted stuff:

    And now some close-ups:

    Kroot carnivores:

    Hammerhead:

The panel lines were done with a micron pen, the idea was taken from this starship modeller article :http://starshipmodeler.com/rv/pg_tau.htm

    And more goodies:

    Drones:

You just gotta love those flying toasters, they usually kill a lot more than they are worth, their greatest achievement was taking down a statured demon prince in close combat. We still laugh at the image of him being hit on the head with a drone frisbee style.

    Devilfish:

    Crisis suits:

The weapons and support systems are magnetised, so I have complete freedom with equiping them. That's why the current setup is a bit odd, twin-linked MP plus multitracker.

And now for some mordheim fun.

The first hirstarts ruins I've ever made:

They're great for filling holes left between larger buildings, to avoid empty killzones.

    Even more

    A Two-storey house plus a fountain:

The fountain was made to try out the shoe polish technique, the effect is nice and gritty. The only thing it lacks now is some water.

Another fountain, a wood pile and grain sacks:

I've always fancied the dark angel model from Reaper Miniatures, so I used it as a statue.

    The second two storey house:

And a shot from the back:

You can see the detailing on the walls, a bookshelf and a landscape painting.

Re: Qdeu's Plog of Bizarre (Mordheim and 40k)

A new year and some new minis.
I've painted a freelancer knight for mordheim and did a test scheme on one of my renegade militiamen. However because I use a gasoline based wash(It flows much better than any of the water ones and I find it easier to control)I won't be able to dullcoat them until they've dried for 24hours.

So to keep you occupied I made a quick tutorial on how I make bases for my mordheim miniatures.

First here's the mould I use:

I made it by filling the hirstarts cobblestone mould with just a thin layer of dental plaster, then after it dried through the night I sanded it to fit the size of a standard GW 20mm base. The mould itself was made by pouring a layer of RTV rubber over the plaster master.

These are the tools i use for casting:

The atomiser is filled with a "wet water" mix - a drop of washing machine rinse agent added. It breaks up the water surface tension and results in fewer air bubbles. I spray the mould before casting and also use add the mix to the plaster.

    The mould filled with plaster:

You may have noticed the mould is overfilled, that's because after several minutes the plaster settles at the bottom, leaving water and airbubbles on the top. I then use a scraper(just noticed I forgot to put it in the tools photo)to ensure that the bottom of my cast is flat.

    And here's the finished product:

Expect an update tommorow, if the weather will allow me to spray.

Re: Qdeu's Plog of Bizarre (Mordheim and 40k)

    Hi,
sorry for the late post (I don't know if somebody is watching the thread, but sorry nonetheless). Real life got in the way and today is the first day I had some modelling time.

    The base tutorial continues:

The base layer is chocolate latex wall paint.

It is then overbrushed with pumpkin color.

And finally drybrushed with cream color.

In order to mount metal minis to their bases I need to pin them, an believe it or not this is what I use:

It may seem huge, but gives much more control than a dremel(at the lowest setting I can drill at about 200rpm., the dremel doesn't go below 5000) and is really stable.

I have finished 3 more dwarfs for my warband, plus a freelancer, when the dullcoat dries there will be pictures.

Re: Qdeu's Plog of Bizarre (Mordheim and 40k)

It turned out that the dullcoat has allready dried so more photos are to come:

    3 more crossbowmen:

The colors are a bit vivid, but these are dwarfs that have served in the Empire army (mordheim is based 500 years before the current warhammer setting, when this was common practice).

And here's my test scheme for renegade militia.

I must say I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. The base is obviously not done, because I have yet to decide on how to base them. I'll probably go for some desert sand.
