    Aquila Lander

Fire base #5 had a great little article on converting the crashed Aquila lander terrain piece, from the Battle For Macragge Box Set, into a usable model of the lander. It was surprisingly easy. It took me about 6 or 7 days (less than 30 hours). I have some minor details to add to the wing tips. I have to wait for some more styrene plastic to come in. I have one problem. After I put on the landing gear, I notice one wing dips lower than the other. Oh well, I guess I can live with it.:cries: Not bad considering the total cost for the lander and materials was less than $20 US. The Forge World is over $180.

    Re: Aquila Lander

I finished the wing tips. I added the small vertical strips you see on the Forge World Aquila. It looked to plane without them. One of the wings was closer to the ground than the other wing, so I added some length to one of the landing gear to fix that problem. I guess I'm done with the detailing, so I will start priming it tonight.

Great work on that mate. Just wondering though did you do anything to remove the dirt that is lying around on the body of the craft or did you just leave it as is.

    Cheers Rom

Yes I did remove the dirt. I used a flat chisel blade on an X-acto knife. I put a small picture of it if your not familiar with them. If you use it, be careful and don't try to remove too much at once. You can end up stabbing yourself with it. Just remove a shallow layer at a time. I couldn't get a completely smooth surface, but I like my vehicles to look well used and weathered. I also couldn't get all the dirt off the areas where the louvered vents are, so I covered those areas with plastic card. I just put the first layer of black primer on so I may have an up date in a day or two. Bye for now.

Simply awesome. Even better than the one in Firebase, I think. Say, how did you do the jet intakes?

I got the engine intakes from Evil mushroom games.

They come in three sizes and are really modified Warmachine type bases. I'm planning on using two 50mm ones for a helicopter type vehicle soon.

    Re: Aquila Lander

This is a small up date. I primed it black and then gave it another red base coat on the areas I'm going to hand paint red. I didn't want to try and paint red over black. Too many coats for that large of an area. I will start the hand painting tomorrow, but a new semester also starts in a few days so it may be a week or so until I finish the lander.

OK, now that it's primed... all I can say is oh em eff gee! Seriously that looks SO identical to the FW model. It's probably only missing rivets and no one would be able to tell unless they inspect both next to each other and they would need to do it inch by inch too.

    Re: Aquila Lander

I'm done painting the lander. I used four different shades of red for the hull and two shades of grey to high light the black wings. I left off any markings, so I could use it with different armies. It came out alright, nothing great, but I'm happy with it. I have an air bush and I know techniques to make a better paint job, but I don't have the patience to do them. If I make it too nice, I would be afraid to use it as a game piece. It was a quick project, a week to build and a couple days to paint. For $ 20 US, I don't think you can beat it. If you have the time I highly recommend this project.
