Build a world thread! Detail a world of your choosing!

After seeing how well 'An Imperium of one million worlds' thread went and its popularity I kinda got an idea. So respect goes to Apologist for starting that thread and giving me this idea.

    Worldbuilder Thread!
    Synopsis
Create a world from scratch or use an existing world and detail it at length! Add whatever information regarding the world andits inhabitants, climate and weather, flora and fauna, coordinates, major sights and significant occurances. Literally everything you can think of! One world per post and add to it when you come up with something new for it. Think of this as the lonely planet guide to your planet!

    Link to world key template

    I will start...

    World Key...
... to Rhidins... a temperate world of high cliffs and archipelago. The loyal citizens here fought a war against the orks, and won. Rhidins produces food and rare minerals for Port Maw and Praetoria.

    Inspiration
My home county in the UK, Yorkshire.

    Population, See also society
1,569,660 divided up with 54.6% being male.

    Rotation Speed
    540 mph

    Orbit
Due to the relatively high mass of the planet and gravitic effect of other solar bodies the orbit is roughly flat and equal with no diversifying effects on climate.

    Day Length
    26 hours

    Year length
450 days or 15 months. Each month equals 30 days.

    Climate classification
    Cold - Temperate - Humid

    Mean Surface Temperature
    14 - 22 degrees celcius

    Tropospheric Composition
Catagorised as class M planet, or within 0.02 divergence of earth.

    Climate
Relatively short Summer of 3 months and likewise winter, Spring and Autumn are significantly longer than standard due to orbit. Spring is the longest season being 5 months long and Autumn 4.

    Climatic Regions
Polar regions nominally tundral moorland or mountainous. Ice covered for ~ 13.216 months of the year.
Tropic bands between poles roughly equal temperature between polar and equatorial temperatures, average temperature in these regions is 8 degrees celcius.
Equatorial regions form greatest area and main continental masses are found here, average temperature for these regions are 14 degrees celcius.

    Climatic Phenomenon
Rainy season - Average days of rainfall per year is 180.

    Flora
Polar regions typically home to mosses, grasses and Heather, few trees grow here due to thin soil.
Tropic areas dominated by pine forests, deciduous tree types less dominant. Grasses and heather dominant in higher areas, lower areas dominated by meadow plants, grasses and Goarse. Some rare and endangered small flowering plants present.
Equatorial regions typically deforested to make way for agriculture, where agriculture is absent deciduous forest is dominant.

    Fauna
    Domesticated mammals introduced by humanity:
Domesticated mammals such as grox, bovinus communus and other common cattle common in agricultural areas and tropics.
Other domesticated mammals are kept as pets such as all breeds of Feline including rare instances of Gyrinx. Al breeds of Canis are kept as pets.
Pheasant was also introduced by humanity. Vermin such as rats, mice and rabbits.
    Native Fauna:
Small hunting felines called Crylyx. Small hunting canis called NeaFox. Countless species of birds, typically sea birds.
Insect life is common and typically flying, local equivalents of Bee's and wasps deadly.

    Major topograhical items
2 major landmasses, East, West, North and South Rhidins.
    22 minor islands.
East Rhidins is sepperated from North Rhidins by a ridge of mountains called "Wolds". A Mountain range called "the Pennites" enclose North Rhidins to the south and west which these then link in the north west of the island with high moorland which then continues south to join up with the north eastern tip of the "Wolds"
The area enclosed by these mountains and moors are called the plains of Jurv. See economy.
East Rhidins is mostly gently rolling hills in the north of that region and flat drained boggy land to the south. North and East Rhidins make up a single continent denoted by Imperial Records as Rhidins Prime.
South Rhidins is gently rolling hills and flat plains prone to flooding. See economy.
West Rhidins is made up of 64% moorland that has been extensively urbanised. The remaining 36% is equally made up of deciduous Forest, reservoirs and lakes and farmland. West and South Rhidins make up a single continent denoted by Imperial Records as Rhidins Secundus.
Several Small Islands to the west of North Rhidins are inhabited by the remnants of an Ork invasion.

    Socio-economic data
    Cities and towns
Capital is Jurv in region named North Rhidins. Known for its massive Cathedral and pre imperial ruins found underneath the city streets.
Second city is Ledz in region of South Rhidins, though Ledz is more heavily populated than Jurv, Jurv was founded long before Ledz.
Steelfields is the third city not far from Ledz in the region of South Rhidins. This city is reknown for its forges and Steelfields power swords company.
Forth city is the pit known as 'ull, a dreary and smelly place known for its massive port that services the East/North Rhidins continent.
Harrow sits on the edge of the north west limit of North Rhidins. A pretty stepped city.
White Bay, a decrepit run down fishing port on the northernmost tip of North Rhidins. Home to a large soldiers retirement settlement.
Bridestown, on the border between North and South Rhidins on the east coast. Another decrepit fishing port.
Skiarborr, halfway between the previous two entries on the north east coast of North Rhidins. Another rotting fishing port.
Maltings Town, a quaint market town known for its breweries.
Barnsdale, South Rhidins town known for its many manufactoria dedicated to the production of clothing.
Hecclestown, (south Rhidins) known for its exceedingly fine cakes.
Bardsford, a neglected industrial town in South Rhidins, prone to rioting.
Hudgestown, West Rhidins town known for its universities and stepped yet green urbanisation.
Illsmoor, South Rhidins moorland town known for its gardens and those who tend to them. The Rhidins world anthem was written here.
Streamsdale Fort, in South Rhidins, site of the ruins of pre imperial fortification. Now a transport hub for the whole of the Region, Known for its manufactoria that used to produce clothing but now given over to transport maintainance.

    Economy
Mostly agricultural; 15% of the population works in agriculture or services depending on or by agriculture. 96.3% of farms are owned by private companies who make extortionate profit off selling what they produce. Rhidins exports ~80% of the food it produces to Port Maw and Praetoria.
Service industries such as communication nodes employ a further 30%.
20% of the population work for the government of Rhidins or the distribution of commodities such as working in shops or markets.
5% work in mining. A much kept secret by the government are the deep veins of metals and precious gems. Most notably is the rare black gemstone called Jet. The government on Rhidins manipulates the data regarding instances of minable materials in the hope they can ask a greater price for what they actually do produce.
Unemployment runs at around 30%, most of the employed live in the east and north rhidins on account of the loss of the fishing industry and closure of mines that were still operable, additionally, farming has been modernised to the level that most of the industry is automated.

    Society
The people of Rhidins are depressed, lack of adaquate well paid work means that few luxuries can be afforded. Although the imperium is supposed to be a classless society this is a dirty lie. Those who work for the government are the upper classes, those who work for the private farming companies or those in managerial role are generally the middle classes and anyone else is working or lower class.
Basically, those of a lower class hates those higher up, this was not always as severe as it is today, but it is caused by the perception that those with wealth have gathered it at the cost of the poor and vulnerable.
However, those who succeed in the Scholam may be granted access to the Imperial Universities either on Rhidins or off world. Should someone escape in this method they may succeed elsewhere in the Imperium.

    Theological situation
Nominally Lectitio Divinius, the people of Rhidins are not as pious as most worlds (weekly attendance at sermons is 15.23%). The people of Rhidins instead work hard in their jobs.
Other sects of the imperial creed are most common in South and West Rhidins, these sects are looked upon with mistrust and sometimes outright disgust by the greater population. This has led to some faith based rioting in some towns.

Normal Citizen personal income on average
12k credits per annum. While not poor savings are typically low.
The unemployed are entitled to a small pittance in support that isnt enough to live on, each city has at least one ghetto where the unemployed live.

    Water Supply
North and East Rhidins are supported by a mixture of natural springs and underground rivers.
South and west Rhidins are supported by reservoirs.
There is no desalination in use on Rhidins.

    Principle Exports
Agricultural produce - mostly grain and meat destined for Port Maw and Praetoria.
Bohls (said Bowls) Blue, a dedicated oil producing shrub.
Other forms of Oil producing crops.

    Secondary exports
Imperial tithes require almost all metals and plastics produced on Rhidins. The true actual amount that could be produced is vastly higher due to government corruption.
As metals; gemstones and crystals produced in the mines of Rhidins are either syphoned off by the wealthy or Sold elsewhere.

    Tithe Grade and status
    Agriculture: secundus extremis
    Mining: tertius Maxis

    Notable Locations
The Great Cathedral of Jurv, an excellent example of early imperial gothic architecture.
The Wolds mountain range, a mixture of Chalk and Limestone. The top soil is a relatively fertile chalk/clay that is suitable for some hard wearing grain crops and oil producing plants. In the growing months the wolds are a beautiful tapestry of colours and textures due to the crops grown here.
The Pennites. Limestone and sandstone. Moorland unsuitable for arable farming, thus mostly cattle. This area is well known for its rugged bueaty.
North Jurv Moors to the north of the Wolds are also an area of natural beauty. Rugged and difficult for transport.
Plains of Jurv - a massive basin through which numerous rivers flow, typically flood plains, this area is incredibly fertile and from the Pennites and Wolds form an incredible vista of natural and man made beauty. The colours and textures in both the growing seasons and autumn have been known to bring visitors to tears.
The Walls of Jurv, made by pre imperial settlers to protect the city, now mostly in ruins but are protected by Imperial Sanction due to the early Imperial aquilas found in places. A large watchtower stands atop a considerable earthwork at the intersection of the two rivers that pas through Jurv.
Numerous citadels stud the landscape, notably Skiarborr, 'Ull, Ledz (ruined),
White Bay is the site of a ruined Cathedral. There are many ruined Cathedral around the whole of Rhidins, suggesting a war of faith may have occured during the long night. All cathedrals are pre imperial and where they have survived have been converted to Lectitio Divinitus.
The Dragonshead Swamp between the wolds and 'Ull. Named in this manner because of the strange dragon shaped rocks protruding from it.
Within in the Swamp is the River Ull and on its banks is the Mesa of Saint Roosil.
Several of the island to the west of North Rhidins, these are known the simple names of Red and then a number.

    Notable Citizens
Saint Roosil: Born on Praetoria 401965, came to Rhidins to study the Dragonshead Swamp. He not only drained the swamp but brought about an agricultural revolution in the area of East Rhidins. He later found deep underground salt caverns in underneath East Rhidins. During this time he made A rocky mesa his base of operations and this Mesa still stands as his memorial today. Less well known is what he found in the salt caverns, a deamon from a time when the Eldar were still masters of the known universe. Roosil's intervention in the swamp had weakened its power until a ignorant farmer damaged the deamons' container aloowing it to influence the world again. Taking responsibility for the strange occurances that happened in East Rhidins Roosil raised an army and set upon a crusade out past the Halo Zone and found not only a means to contain the deamon but the long lost Athenus sector. Saint Roosil was lost age 60 during his second crusade out past the Athenus Subsector and was sainted for his endeavors on both Athenus and Rhidins. He returned to Rhidins 500 years after his disapearance with one of the ships he built, with him returned the 1st Regiment of Rhidins. Both Roosil and his men were subject to a inquisitorial investigation by Inquisitors Ravenholm and Callie Mar. Saint Roosil resides in Jurv and is Governor Militant.

The man known as Inquisitor Ravenholm, not his real name, he was born 30 years prior to the 13th Black Crusade. During this time he was seconded to the Athenus sector after his master met his death at the hands of a Chaos Cult on Athenus. Recommended for Sainthood by the people of the Athenus subsector for his activities in keeping the peace and prosperity of the region.

    Military considerations
    Military bases
Jurv and Hull have major military bases and home to the majority of Rhidins regular troops.
8 Pre Imperial ground based defense silos are interspersed around Rhidins. Unknown to the government and its populace is that these silos are automated defenses and each houses a powerful A.I. construct that has been watching over the people of Rhidins since before the Long Night. These Silos are totally self reliant and benevolent. [InquisInsert - Ravenholm - this data is to be considered FYI Inquis only! Keep the cogheads away!. end insert]

    Military history
A significant Ork Waagh landed in North and South Rhidinsn and several of the small islands to the west of North Rhidins. The people of Rhidins rose up as one to combat the threat and the Orks were utterly destroyed on the two major continents, magos biologis were amazed by the Rhidins military abilities in destroying utterly the invaders, this lead (to some extent) to the development of Ork spore prevention techniques.
During the 13th Black Crusade a single Chaos cruiser penetrated as far as Rhidins for no apparent reason. The cruiser was thought to be a trator Mechanicus prototype. The craft was shot down by Silo 2 (see above), unfortunately the force it carried assaulted Ull, Saint Roosil's Mesa and destroyed a small town named Beverslay. Inquisitor Ravenholm, his henchpersons, a retired Necromundan Company, Local regular army and [classfied - see Forces currently on planet] destroyed those that assualted the Mesa. The forces that assaulted Ull were a decoy and were utterly destroyed by both Silo 2 and the City' defenses.

Rhidins military is atypical of most Imperial worlds in that it holds a Regular Force under arms, although this is considered illegal by Imperial Law the lesser known statute revision in the run up to the 13th Black Crusade means that this is now legal. 100,000 regular Guardsmen reside in barracks at all times. These men are incredibly well trained and receive extra training -support and advisors from the Old Soldiers retirement village in White Bay.

    Battles, conflicts and wars
    2 Invasions both destroyed.
    - The Hun, Ork Waaaagh ~2 million individuals. Losses 1.37 Million.
    - Rocco Margess, Death Guard Captain, 420,000 est. individuals. Losses 35,000 civilians in Beverslay, 746 Ull, 129 St Roosil Mesa.
Ongoing small scale skirmishes with Orks that build craft to cross the Oceans from the small western Isles

    Forces currently on planet
1st Regiment Prince of Rhidins Own Regiment of Foot - 40,000 - Joint Task Force
1st Regiment of Rhidins Verderers - 40,000 - Light Infantry

1st Rhidins returned to Rhidins with Saint Roosil after 500 years missing. Fully half the remaining regiment (1500) grav chuted or valkyried to Saint Roosil's Mesa during the assault by Cultists and Death Guard. Entire regiment found to be able to regenerate wounds. Reason: [data removed : ident Ravenholm]
2nd Rhidins - On tour on Cadia or that subsector - precise location unknown.
    3rd Rhidins - Peacekeeping - Athenus Sector.
The Hand of Mercy - Flagship - Saint Roosil's 1st and Second Crusade - Current Location unknown - last seen leaving system alongside The Cormorant(Ravenholm)

    Current military status
On alert - skirmishes with Ork Pirates common

    Other Concerns
Orbital scanners show that after the failed 13th Black Crusade Invasion, Ork population halved with no signs of combat. Scattered, distorted communications suggest the escape of someone called Badgutz.

... to the glistening, cathedral-studded cities of Armong, where the well-fed populace reveres the Emperor as a six-armed god of satiety and plenty, and prophets speak boldly that his coming is nigh ...

    Basic Info
    Segmentum: Solar
    Sector: Estessera
    Sub-sector Westing
    System Armong

Surveyed M36, by an Adeptus Mechanicus explorator party.

First colony landing M37, by a disaffected (but wealthy) noble house from the neighboring Occidens Westing system.

    Summary

    Physical Statistics and commentary

    Satellites
    None

    Celestial phenomena
Armong is the only planet and indeed the only celestial body in its system, save for the standard main-sequence yellow star it orbits. AdMech astrographers are puzzled as to exactly why this is the case, and several theories abound, from xenos intervention to a "one in a million" perfect system formation. The locals usually attribute this to divine intervention.

    Society
A large proportion of the population (92%) live in rural areas, tending Armong's vast farmlands. Of these, a majority (63%) are a member of religious communes that dot the landscape. While each presents itself differently, they are astonishingly homogenous, each teaching that the way to peace lies in obedience, productivity, and faith. While many offworlders doubt this, few can question the efficiency and happiness of the communalists.

    Theological situation
Armong is a devoutly religious world, owing in part to piety at the highest levels of government and in part to the immense prosperity of the world, especially in recent years. The largest cities have some of the highest proportion of space devoted to cathedrals of any non-Shrine world in the entire Segmentum.

The locals typically worship the Emperor as a six-armed deity, often depicted in a sitting position, with his hands set thusly: Two hands open to face the viewer (representing the Emperor's generosity to his people), two hands pointing to the viewer (representing the Emperor's gift of wisdom and call to obedience) and two hands pointing skyward (representing the Emperor's home on Terra and promised return from the heavens). Armongese call these the Three Precepts.

In recent years, a number of "prophets" have appeared, proclaiming that the Emperor will return soon. While the local authorities have been skeptical, religious speech is a much-cherished tradition and none of them have done lasting harm.

Hespera, a planet forged from war. Hesperans are arrogant and warlike dicks.

    Inspiration
Sparta (before 300 was made ), Nazi Germany, Communist Russia

    Basic Info
    Segmentum: Obscuras
    Sector: datacorrupt
    Sub-sector: Sunder
    System: Hespera (capital of sub-sector)

Surveyed: Dark Age of Technology era civilization, the Republic of Syracuse Military Directorate, discovered 349M38 after warpstorm Typhonis abated. The RSMD attack on the neighboring system prompted the survey.
First colony landing: N/A. First troop landing 350M38. Upon victory, Imperial Guard troops were proclaimed citizens of the planet by right of conquest (see ref:18-6a-[idec-xii], “IG-Crusade-Formations”).

    Physical Statistics and commentary
Satellites No natural satellites, fifty plus artificial (including communications, defense, dry docks, etc.)
    Celestial phenomena None.
Size Mean radius is ~ 6500 km.
    Gravity 1.19 g.
    Population 4.7 billion.
    Day length ~17h 06m.
    Year length ~469 days.
Special note: year and day length is ignored in favour of the Imperial calendar. Hesperans don't care what colour the sky is.
Climate classification Temperate. From jungles to tundra.
Flora & Fauna Little of note. There is a local fruit called a prite. It is spicy and irritable.

    Socio-econmoic data
    Cities and towns data missing
    Economy
State property with very limited private ownership. The government has almost complete control over the economy.
    Government
Hespera's government can best be described as an oligarchy with elements of a “constitutional dictatorship”. The highest level of Hesperan government is the Governor-General, an individual elected by and from Hespera's legislative body, the Senate. He or she is responsible for decisions concerning the whole planet or system. The Governor-General's cabinet is formed up of the leaders of various Imperial organizations, such as the Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Administratum, and so on. The cabinet has been supervised by a member of the Inquisition since Hespera became the capital of the Sunder sub-sector.
    Society
Hespera is a self proclaimed meritocracy. It achieved this by the complete abolishment of the conventional family unit. All infants are given up to the government at birth and then raised to adulthood by the schola progenium. There are no exceptions to this, whether the child is born from a lowly labourer or a decorated general. With lineage and inheritance completely eliminated, an individual's skills and abilities are intended to determine their status within Hesperan society.
This also allows the government to tightly control overpopulation. Women are encouraged to produce as many children to provide for the state. If the infant influx is to great to be countered with military conscription then the excess infants are euthanized. This system is celebrated by Hesperans for it's ease and simplicity.
    Theological situation
Religion, while important to every loyal Hesperan citizen, tends to take a back seat in the face of politics. That being said, the separation of church and state waxes and wanes continually.
    Aristocracy
None, see society. Typically, Hesperans look down upon individuals who claim to have noble blood. This has resulted in several "gentlemanly" wars with neighboring systems.
Normal Citizen personal income on average

    Military History
Most significant war was the Liberation of Hespera in 350M38. The original inhabitants of the planet were a Dark Age of Technology era civilization, the Republic of Syracuse Military Directorate (discovered 349M38 after warpstorm Typhonis abated). The RSMD attacks on the neighboring system prompted a retaliatory strike. An existing IG crusade formation was sent to claim and then settle the planet in the name of the Emperor. These guardsmen were veterans of several wars, having faced Orks, Eldar, and the dreaded forces of classified. The RSMD forces were gradually pushed back by the inhuman barbarity of the Imperial Guardsmen. The most notable inhuman barbarian was COL Hesperus, known for turning POWs into flaming effigies and allowing RSMD troops to rescue civilians rigged with explosives. The most significant battle was in the capital of the RSMD government where COL Hesperus prevented the enemy from deploying apocalyptic biological weapons, sacrificing himself and 120 square kilometers of land. The planet was named after him in his honour.
    Forces currently on planet
~26 million Imperial Guardsmen (380 million if pressed). There are no PDF troops. Instead, the majority of IG regiments are kept as reserve and garrison forces. Most citizens can function as trained militia in case of an emergency.

    Climatic Regions

    Climatic Phenomenon

    Flora

    Fauna

    Major topographical items
One main continent which is fairly flat with a huge mountain range to the east, along with a scatter of smaller landmasses, thought to be the result of volcanic activity, on the opposite side of the planet.

    Socio-economic data
    Cities and towns
    Economy
The level of technology on Ferate is extremely low, roughly that of Terra in early M2, and as a result the economy is poor, with a wide class gap between the landlords and peasants.
    Society
There are two main groups on the planet. The plains of the main continent are home to a united nation, organised on feudal lines with an autocratic monarch and various levels of lords. The large, mountainous area is home to a more tribal culture, with many small bands, hostile both to those dwelling on the plains and each other.
    Theological situation
While the Ministorum personnel sent to the planet have managed to convert the kingdom to worship of the God-Emperor, they have had little success with the wild tribes of the hills. A few tribes have accepted the Imperial Cult, but many cling to their old faith, and it is possible that a few worship a darker pantheon…
Normal Citizen personal income on average
This is hard to estimate given the planet’s stratified society and the fact that Imperial currency is not used, but it is certainly not high.
    Water Supply
There are plenty of rivers on the planet, and the lack of industry means that pollution is unheard of.
    Principle Exports
    None
    Secondary exports
    None
    Tithe Grade and status
Ferate is graded as a Feudal world, but due to its small population and resources, no tithe has yet been collected

    Military considerations
    Military bases
Most towns have a small garrison, and the majority of the army is based in the capital, but these forces are small, and given the technology level, could probably be defeated by a single Astartes squad or a few companies of Guard.
    Battles, conflicts and wars
The main kingdom was united in a bloody war roughly 500 years ago, and though the tribes clash all the time, there have been no major conflicts since.
    Current military status
Local forces are no threat to the Imperium if the planet was to secede, and an Inquisitor is currently on the world to assess its suitability for an Imperial Guard founding.

Re: Build a world thread! Detail a world of your choosing!

    SICULI
SiculiSiculi is a barren planet covered in sinkhole lakes and affected by intermittent geological activity caused by torsional stress from its largest moon (which is half Siculi's size but twice as heavy). These lakes (called "droon") are used to harvest an energy rich algal material called Protoalgia - it's bright orange colour is visible from orbit. The largest droon have settlements along their edges where the people reside. The inhabitants are almost all part of the labour gangs that work on the massive processoria, floating factory barges that extract and export the protoalgia. Unfortunately none of the inhabitants can consume the protoalgia as it requires complex processing and combination with other materials before it can be safely ingested. This ironically means that the Agri world has to import its own food. Once put through processing on other planets protoalgia becomes a highly energy efficient foodstuff, and is shipped out to many parts of the Imperium.

In fact, food is so important to the people of Siculi that it has become the unofficial monetary system, corpsewafers forming the hard currency. Religious Celebrations are held as large feasts, and ritual food consumption is seen as holy.

The governor lives on the smallest moon in the only spaceport, and rarely descends to the planet's surface. This leaves the planet to the control of the Guilds, massive companies that control most of the harvesting and other (limited) business opportunities. This control has led to riots and rebellions in the past, so the people need to be watched if the supply of protoalgia is to continue.

The Adeptus Mechanicus have a small research station on the largest moon, ostensibly there to study the relationship between the moon and the planet (considering their abnormal densities). They have also sent a few research teams into the droon to catalogue the bizarre organisms found there and to do geological surveys of the sinkhole themselves. Several expeditions (using expendable local help of course) have disappeared whilst others have recorded strange energy readings in the deepest droon.

An uneasy population and planet combined with the highly sought after protoalgia, have created a precarious existence. A seemingly indolent Governor, corrupt Guilds, and an underground freedom moment coupled with the strange readings from the deepest droon and the planet is ripe for investigation.

    +++PLANETARY DATA+++

    EQUATORIAL CIRCUMFRENCE: 27,961 Miles.

    GRAVITY: 0.8G.

    CLASS: Agri-world.

    SUBSECTOR: Adrantis

YEAR LENGTH IN DAYS: Longstride: 422 Shortshank: 370 - due to the strange affect the largest moon (Siculi tertius) has on the planet, every second year is shorter than the previous one. The gravitational force required to do this is immense, and so it affects the geological stability of the planet.

DAY LENGTH IN TERRAN HOURS: 22.

SATELLITES: Two moons. The smallest (siculi secondus) is the main space port for the planet, and also used as the Governor's residence. It has a population of 20 million and is quite busy with continual flow through of merchantmen and the occasional navy patrol. The largest (siculi tertius) is inert and uninhabited except for a small Adeptus Mechanicus research station examining the moon's unusual relationship with the planet.

There is something unnatural about the relationship between the largest moon and Siculi itself. The moon shouldn't be as dense as it is, and Siculi shouldn't be as light as it is. The research station on the moon has had little luck scanning past the first few kilometres of the moon's surface, but it is altogether too smooth - its mean surface irregularity is only 50 metres.

POPULATION: 250,000,000+. The sparse population live in sprawling dockworks around the edges of the planet's droon (the local name for the massive lake networks covering the planet). The majority of them live in stark conditions, continually tending to the protoalgia blooms growing across the droon surface in their processoria; massive floating refineries continually harvesting and re-seeding the droon for export to the wider Imperium.

    MEAN SURFACE TEMPERATURE: 10°C.

TROPOSPHERIC COMPOSITION: Nitrogen 74%, Oxygen 22%, Sulphur Dioxide 1%, Ozone 1%, Carbon Dioxide 2%.

PLANETARY GOVERNER: Gherloch Murdugn lives on the smallest moon, Siculi Minor (or Gervpoot as known by the inhabitants in their pidgin gothic, literally "Governor's Rump" due to the unfortunate shape of the moon and their opinion of the Governor). He rarely visits Siculi, sending instead his appointed magistrates to the surface to enforce Imperial Law (usually backed up by a unit of enforcers or even Arbites on rare occasions) and ensure the Tithe Quota is maintained. Many are honest adepts, who believe that their service is vital to the Emperor and Imperium, but some use their power for personal gain, and are even rumoured to possess their own small enforcer armies bought with ill-gotten funds. This is a potential threat to the Governor's power, but every now and then a Magistrate will meet with an accident whilst planetside, although whether this is the will of the Governor or rival Magistrates is unknown. Certainly those who have met the Governor describe him as a vapid buffoon, although there are some who claim this is a ruse to keep his enemies complacent around him.

The Governor's position is hereditary (although only if they have an heir) and he mostly insulated from the settlements on the planet itself.

RELIGION: The hardy people of Siculi have little time for piety, as their lives are full with the Endless Harvest. When they do congregate to honour the Emperor, they do so at raucous family or guild feasts, the ritualised act of consuming the meal seen as a particularly holy event.

CLIMATE: The planet is known for its gales and dust storms that sweep the planet almost continuously. The barren landscape produces an abrasive wind of silica that eats away at anything in its path. As Longstride turns to Shortshank (known as Strideturn) the winds pick up and geological instability increases. Sometimes massive earthquakes split the ground and drain droon into underground caverns. On rare occasions the massive processoria and their crews will be sucked down as well.

CLIMATIC REGIONS: The poles are distinct white pockmarked caps. For some reason the planet's only known volcanic activity occurs at both poles, creating a network of frozen droon separated by magma flows and volcanic upheavals.

SEAS: The most notable features of Siculi are its lakes. There are no oceans on the planet at all, just thousands of lakes (or droon), ranging in only a few dozen metres in width to several thousand kilometres. The most peculiar thing about these lakes is that they are exceedingly deep; although the average is a kilometre, the shallowest reach one hundred metres, and the deepest surveyed reach almost twenty kilometres in depth. Each water body sits in a sheer walled sink hole produced by the upheaval of Strideturn. There are 37 major droon, with over a thousand secondary droon and tens of thousands of minor droon. The nominal capital of the planet (in that it is the biggest settlement) is Feendrohl situated on the second largest Droon on the planet. The largest droon, Grhaan, has been uninhabited for the last 1000 years since the entire city and all the processoria on it disappeared during Strideturn. No geological cause was ever found for its disappearance and the people refused to repopulate it, declaring it cursed. Despite this there are some who are greedy or desperate enough to covertly harvest the protoalgia that grows and rots on its surface. Some never return. The people are tied so closely to their droon that the name of the people and settlement is the same. Thus each settlement is named for the droon it occupies.

The droon have been scanned with limited submersible activity and strange energy readings have been found in several of the largest ones. The biggest, Ghraan, has produced the greatest consternation and mystery, both through the disappearing of an entire settlement, but also through the fusion signatures coming from its depths.

TERRA-FORMING: Only limited manipulation has occurred, mainly in the form of massive shallow canals. Sometimes an upheaval shifts the currents and takes the protoalgia with it, other times another close droon will produce a particularly good harvest. Thus temporary canals are built between the droon to allow the processoria to exploit them.

NATIVE FLORA AND FAUNA: The land is mostly barren, with no vegetative material to reinforce the soil it blows away in the winds. There are some small invertebrates, but the only animal of any real size is the Dirt Kelt. This is a bizarre creature, almost two metres in length. It moves rarely, and when it does it burrows through the sand and any rock in its way, using its stomach acids to dissolve them. The creature has backward pointing overlapping spines to give it grip as it moves through the ground and a tail separated into five articulated digits a third of its length, each covered in spines and barbs. These are used to anchor itself in its tunnels and give it a sudden burst of speed when needed Its head is little more than a knob on the back of its spine. It feeds by everting its oesophagus through the ground to the surface, and unfurling oversized cilia in all directions so that it looks like a disturbing fleshy flower. When a surface organisms' distinctive vibrations and electrical pattern stimulate these cilia they will contract suddenly, simultaneously causing a peristaltic convulsion that floods the surface with potent acids. Many an unwary human has lost their foot to this disgusting creature.

Some magos biologis have speculated that the dirt kelt is descended from the fauna found at depth in the droon, and is the first air breathing vertebrate to have evolved on the planet.

The droon have a slightly richer biota, but it generally lives at depth, no less than 50 metres. None of the animals come to the surface normally, and thus don't generally pose a threat to the Endless Harvest of protoalgia. Several dozen droonsharks have been catalogued by the biologis, ranging from one to twenty metres in length. They all invariably exhibit an anguilliform swimming pattern and possess a rather well developed tail fluke reinforced with five ossified rays. Their main weapon is an elastic oesophagus. Part way down the oesophagus is an ossified ring with protruding spines that can be rippled through muscle contraction. The droonshark moves up behind its prey and everts its oesophagus, harpooning its prey with the spines. The muscles then contract and pulsate, rolling the prey down the oesophagus like a conveyor belt.

Some of those who return from Grhaan droon babble about the father of droonsharks, over one hundred metres long with a mouth large enough to swallow a small processoria. So far no specimen has been captured and most put it down to the curse that lies on Grhaan.

The dartfish is despite its name, a rather large and slow amorphous organism, its pulsating medusa-like dorsal surface reaching almost 30 metres in diameter. It drifts leisurely through the water using its highly developed electroreceptors to pinpoint the location of its prey. Once this has been determined it shoots a dart (from whence it gets its name) on a long tentacle toward the target, harpooning it and dragging it back toward its oral cavity.

ALIEN FLORA AND FAUNA: Apart from the protoalgia, the only non native organisms have survived for any length of time are ambul, accidentally transferred from other planets through merchant drops. Their numbers have remained surprisingly low, although it doesn't appear if they will die out of their own accord.

In the human settlements a variety of vermin from all over the imperium live, inhabiting the lower parts of the cities, and the sewer networks.

ECONOMY: Almost all the population of Siculi belong to one of the great Harvest Guilds as there is very little else of value on the planet. They crew the processoria as they endlessly move up and down the droon harvesting the protoalgia.

The guilds control most of the trade through the planet, using their power and influence to get their hands in whatever business appears. Construction and engineering are the most common non-harvest enterprises, geared entirely to maintaining the droon settlements and keeping the processoria afloat.

Some guilds have purchased expensive submersible barges from the Adeptus Mechanicus in an attempt to corner the market in droonshark meat. As the people of Siculi have a rather bland diet, these guilds don't just have financial reasons for these ventures. So far the danger of being damaged by the larger droonsharks or punctured by one of the dartfish has limited these operations to a descent depth of only 200 metres.

The sole export of the planet is protoalgia. In fact, if it wasn't for this one single commodity, Seculis wouldn't even be classed as an Agri-world at all. Protoalgia is a type of algae or fungus that grows on the surface of the droon across the planet. From orbit the bright orange colour gives the planet a rather bizarre appearance. Despite the less than inviting environment the protoalgia thrives, and requires little to help it grow. When they spore it is carried by the winds across the globe, seeding all the water bodies everywhere. The processoria suck up the protoalgia into massive processing machinery used to render it into its raw form. This is dried and packaged for export to various parts of the Imperium where it is refined with other materials to make it edible.

It is an unfortunate irony of Siculi that it produces billions of tonnes of produce, but that its own people are unable to eat it. Protoalgia is toxic in its natural form, and only through special chemical processes unavailable on Siculi and combination with other essential components is it rendered edible. Such elaborate measures are only willingly undertaken because protoalgia is one of the most efficient energy sources available to the Imperium, and it ships the final rendered form throughout the galaxy, and some say even the astartes themselves make use of it because of its energy output per gram. Siculi is one of the few places it is known to grow.

Thus it is that food has become a valuable economic commodity, and the Siculi go so far as to use it as their currency. Unable to eat the food they unendingly harvest, the Siculi must import supplies (which of course does not include reprocessed protoalgia as it is far too expensive and useful being fed to the lesser servants of the Imperium) from offworld, almost entirely made from reconstituted corpsestarch. The corpsewafer has become the unofficial currency of the people of the droon, used in place of useless metal coinage.

This is why feasts and food in general are associated with the Emperor as a divine luxury.

The starport on Siculi secondus uses Scintillian currency and looks down with patronising sighs at the use of food as a currency by the planetdwellers.

SOCIETY: The droon people are very closely knit tied together through family bonds and labour gang blood ties. They protect their own from outsiders, and are wary of offworlders. The settlements are run by a Guild Council ostensibly voted for (but generally paid for) comprising multiple different Guilds to prevent any one from dominating. It is the guilds and their staff that have access to the more complicated technologies, and their enforcers are paid to protect it. The droon families have little more complicated than a vox, and weapons are generally limited to simple pistols and a lead pipe or three.

In the past there have been some rebellions due to food shortages. The Governor and his magistrates generally let the populace vent their anger at the Guilds (being safe as they are on Siculi secondus) until the food supplies return.

A more dangerous threat are the Droon Brothers, a secret group who believe the Guild's have lied to the Droon people about protoalgia and that it doesn't require such elaborate processing to be eaten. They claim this was a deception to keep the people under Guild control and reliant on external food supplies. They have set up secret home laboratories in an attempt to create a safe form of protoalgia in order to liberate their people from Guild oppression.

WATER SUPPLY: Because food supplies come in from off world, they are funnelled through the Guilds who in turn are selective of which families receive it. Many have turned to bribery to receive an adequate supply, whilst others use less legal means to acquire it. Water requires treatment as the droon are rich in sulphur and methane, and the Guilds control the water treatment plants.

    PRINCIPLE EXPORTS: Protoalgia.

PRINCIPLE IMPORTS: Food and limited manufactured goods.

COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS: There are no real delineations between nations or kingdoms, but the people don't move around much and so each droon city is effectively its own state and territory.

CONFLICTS: Intermittent 'freedom fighting' and uprises against the Guilds happen on occasion. Sometimes Droon Families draw blood oaths against each other, and the droon become a small warzone.

DEFENCES: Most of the planetary defence is in orbit. Massive orbital batteries and torpedo silos surround the planet and its moons. Ground defence is ostensibly the responsibility of the Guilds and the enforcer troops they pay for and maintain.

IMPERIAL GUARD RECRUITMENT: There have been few regiments raised, and they have all unfortunately been beholden to the memory of the Siculi 1st. A thousand years ago the Governor wished to raise the profile of Siculi (and himself) and decided to send a regiment of guard. They were seen as a joke by most of the guard, and were left to defend the supply depots behind the lines. They would have been lost to the annals of history were it not for a single event. In an engagement against the greenskins, an ork blitzkrieg had against all odds smashed through the guard lines. They rampaged through the line eventually encountering the main guard supply depot. Sensing an easy target they descended in a horde upon the supply tents. What the captain of the Siculi 1st said to his men is not known, but popular belief has it as something like "Protect the Emperor's Holy Rations!" When the forward guard elements finally caught up to the horde, they found utter carnage. Not a single ork was alive, and not a single foodstore had been damaged. The Siculi 1st, paranoid about their food had thought the orks meant to steal it, and had fought to the last man to protect the Emperor's rations.

From then on all regiments raised from Siculi have the expectation of self sacrifice and fearlessness in the face of certain death planted firmly on their unwilling shoulders. "Firster" is common droon slang used to describe someone who is distinctly insane.

CONTACT WITH OTHER WORLDS: Siculi is part of the Tephaine System, and has close contact with the neighbouring worlds Tephaine, Tephaine Minor and Reth. The nearest major world is Baraspine.

World Key... Athunus Prime... a warm world and sub sector capital... a recently rediscovered area out towards the southern rim of known space. A pocket of reality protected... flourished in isolation since just after the great [restricted knowledge -Inquistorial Edict]... and nearly ten thousand years of isolation has meant that some technology has been maintained while others lost... wondrous white marble cities... culture within acceptable divergeance... do not question their faith...
