Silverstu's bag of stuff-it's my bag baby!

Hi all, well in an effort to get more out the hobby by putting more in I'm giving this log thing a go. My main interests are dwarfs, 'nids, eldar and possibly VC/dark elves oh and I expect Jes' dark eldar when they come out. I also have a few armies mothballed- classic high elves, blood angels and some other classic mini's. basically I'll be trying to get painted armies together-no Golden demon entries for me!
Here is the work desk pic-

    some sample work-
    nids

    eldar-

and of course my TOP dwarfs-

As you can see I still need to get the hang of this posting pics thing. My main focus will be finishing my TOP dwarf army, deciding on my next TOP army-either the VC or darkelves- I'll probably do testers for both. Also I want to get one of my 40k armies painted up to decent standard- probably nids first as I find them quicker to paint and I have a good proportiion done already[although I am an eldar tart at heart!].
    Currently working on-

    lurking in the background-

    Coments/suggestions and abuse[Hello Arhalien] welcome.

Really like the dwarfs (I saw them on the TOFP log this morning) the scheme is really great, the muted palette helps the beards and faces stand out. The tyranids are pretty cool too but the dire avenger looks a bit grubby and needs his gems doing.

Your dwarfs remind me of the little blond piper dwarf from 4th edition that I've got sitting on my shelf, made me smile.

Ta Gazak- yeah the eldar are probably the army I find the hardest to paint- shame really as they are one of my largest and most played army. That avenger was me trying to get into painting them- he's far from finished but i think i'll concentrate on the nids and dwarfs until my painting skills perk up a bit. I'm glad you like the dwarfs- I always feel the priority in painting dwarfs is armour-beards-flesh anything else is a bonus.I do hope to get get bak and finish the thunderers- most of the cloth is just flat colours and a wash and I'd like to do them justice as they are great mini's and I loved painting them.
Here are a few more flavour shots-
Rangers- which I feel in terms of my eldar are getting there-

    my nid drawer-

    ]

nidhorde- some of the little fellas-

    and some dev gaunts-

apologies for the bad pics- the light was pretty bad and I had to fix the contrast in photoshop- but hopefully gives a bit of an idea of how my stuff is coming together.

Nice looking stuff Stu; it's good to see that you paint something other than the thrice accursed Stunties
I'm impressed by those nids; the carapace is very well done and constrasts nicely with the blue.

Thanks Arhalien- witht the nids the body is a series of dry brushed highlights- quick as and then I try and take a bit of time on the carapace so it's nice you noticed! And the plan is to show a bit more variety than just dwarfs- I'll have to do something new for the next TOP anyway!

Stu ... you have a PLOG! What fun.

I didn't know you did 40K stuff aswell. Your 'Nids are great. Nice scheme.

Best of luck with this. I hope it helps you get stuff painted as much as mine helped me.

Thanks mate- well i had been threatening to do this and it is largely down to being inspired your good self, Arhalien and many others[especially the TOP boys]. I feel like it's been good move- a bit of focus for my painting.
Hopefully keep you entertained with my efforts.

Good going Stu, I really like the Eldar rangers in particular. Maybe when we both have armies painted up we can get a game in on my 40k table (when it's finished!) or my WFB table (on which I have only suffered one (admittedly rather heavy) defeat!!)?

    Keep up the good work.

Cheers- and you're on- i haven't played in ages myself so I'll be easy pickings[my playing isn't much better than my painting!].
I'd better get cracking on the painting so we get the game this year.....

Re: Silverstu's bag of stuff-it's my bag baby!

Quick update in an effort to give this a bit of momentum-
done a bit more on the TOP dwarf unit- 25 of the little buggers and doing them all at once is a tad dull but I've drybrushed the armour, flat colour on flesh and tabards and started on the gloves here and there but really next stage is beards.

Did a bit on the champion because he was annoying me- still a bit to do but at least he is looking tidier-

started some more dev gaunts- they need a couple more highlights on the flesh and then I'll more on to the carapace. Generally I like to work in batches of 3 hence why the dwarf unit is killing me at the minute.

Strangers have arrived on the shores...

Basically I'm thinking of doing darkelves for the next TOP, I really like this champion so I bought them to see if I can enjoy painting them and find a suitable scheme. Thinking pale and dark- I hate purple so no purple- might use the nids scheme but reversed..
    wait and see.
    any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers Sunny- just trying my best and enjoying getting in to painting again. The carapace is bleached bone with a dark ink wash and then blended up to white -lots of thin layers. After he brown wash you mix in a little of the brown into the bone- gives a brown/grey tone- then you just add more bone until it is just bone and then start adding in white. The important thing is too keep the paint thin- something I occasionally forget and end up with heavy paintlines. Thats probably not very clear but I'll take pics when i do the carapace on the gaunts and show some of the stages if you like.
    Thanks for the interest.

Ah those rangers are much better than the dire avenger IMHO the devourer armed gaunts are also lovely.

I hate block painting groups that large too, a few models work much better for me. Supposedly its faster to batch paint in big numbers but it only works if you can stomach painting the same colour for a couple of hours at a time.

That's a corsair champion witht the axe then? I've got my eye on that guy for a prospective hero or lord model but I'm not sure where it comes from.

I'll be interested to see where you go with the dark elf colour scheme as I'm about to embark on my own army too. Should get some test warriors done this week (no idea on a scheme yet).

Cheers Gazak- yeah it's the alternative corsairs champion- I really like the model too-plan on using him as a hero model- great minds think alike! By the way i'd try and get him now if i where you- they are boxing everything now and I went into GW on friday there where very few blisters left[easiest way to get him i think]. Of course I've started him first which was a bit of a mistake- should have practiced on the others first but I'll post pics at the end of the week to show you how I've got on.

I was thinking of getting one this week so hopefully they'll have one at my store. Its not a big issue if I can't find one as I'm sure the plastics will be great but its certainly the best of the current batch of corsairs.

Axes seem like a much better weapon for a ship's boarding party to me so when the plastics are released I might convert a few models or an entire unit with them.

yeah i've always had a thing for elves with axes[it's probably that i'm a dwarf at heart!]- jes' elves used to have the odd axe on them- I have a really nice wood elf champ with one- might turn him dark.. or save him for a tree hugger army. I just got those corsairs for that model- I fully intend to wait for the new ones myself. Interesting idea to convert a few- break out the plasticard I guess- we'll have to swap tips on that one.

Could you give a rundown of how you paint them?

Looking forward to seeing those Dark Elves start to take shape... You'll find those corsairs are very much fun to paint, so detailed and yet so uncomplicated at the same time...

the corsair with the Axe is my favourite in the entire range, has a ton of character and served a noble on foot in many a battle... that is before foot nobles became near extinct (but hey, Blood Armour, Seal of Ghrond, and a GW get's you a great little general in < 2K games)

Oh, and those nids are great!
