The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

Welcome to the Tread-head thread. A lot of people have been posting up pictures of Imperial tank conversions recently, so I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where people can post up their work and share ideas and techniques on modelling and painting Armoured vehicles.

On the subject of what you should post up in the thread, If its model Tank or Walker of some sort (pretty much anything with an AV) then it's fine by me - even if it's not Imperial Guard - as are bikes and the like, but do try to make sure any pictures you include are of a decent quality.

I'll set the ball rolling with some links to some of my recent work.

On the subject of painting, how do you guys go about applying camoflage to your tanks. Personally I think that 40K scale vehicles are a bit too small for Airbrush work (without using an expensive airbrush) so I stipple paint on to get a feathered edge. What about the rest of you.

Also, where do you get your inspiration for you tanks colour scheme from, the tanks you can see pictured here all carry a Green on Green camo sheme copied from early British WWII tanks.

Sometimes I'm just too lazy (or afraid to destroy something) to convert miniatures, so this is basically the only tank I ever converted a bit.

Basilisk

It was quite easy but looks good in my opinion. I just stuck the muzzle break of a battle cannon to the muzzle of the Tremor cannon. The rest for the barrel is made of a part of the new dozerbade's suspension (one of the best parts of the new vehicle assecories sprue in my opinion) and a part of a ball-pen's casing.

I'm eagerly waiting for other conversions.

for camo, i just make up urban shemes based on shadow grey, codex grey, black and white, varies from tank to tank. Ive just figure out how to stippel, ad will be using that for future camo schemes.

IVe done approx 8 tanks so far out of of an intented 16 for this army.

well its true, you can never have too many tanks, or too many threads about tanks...
i hope i can get some pics on here soon, just started converting a panzer IV and a french self propelled gun to fit into my Ig army, and trying to find something i can turn into a baneblade, (BTW were some of those above scratch built? if so, how?)

I am busily (or not so busily but I'll pretend anyhow) painting up my just finished urban themed (I'm with Dodgy Ed here: grey is a colour scheme) Armoured Company. Containing 10 armoured vehicles I feel it fits this thread rather nicely, unfortunately I don't have any decent pictures. I believe however that Borther Munro does. Maybe he will oblige?

On a point of interest, has anyone else had difficulty assembling a forgeworld laser tank destroyer? I ended up employing Minister's green stuffing skills to fill the rather numerous gaps and awkward angles left by general poor fitting.

with forge world, its often difficult to get an exact fit, make sure you cut off all the flash and "Dry fit" the peice without superglue, try and assemble the whole tank without glue, the nyou get a better idea of any filing or bending that neeeds to be done.

Exocowbow, those are great ultras tanks, could we havea guide on how you did the rust effects on the paint chips?

anvils hammer: thanks, I have to admit I like those tanks myself too . The chipping was made by painting chaos black on the parts wanted to be chipped, then painted with boltgun metal (little bit black left to the edges), then a little bit mithril silver. Both painted from edge to middle -lined strokes.

The rust was then added by painting (old) brown wash to the edges of the metal, with little bit to the blue also, with some downward lines to make it look nice . so there is no big magic used . I do not know how the new brown ink works...

I also have to agree with Ed and Saltire here, grey is a colourscheme, and a damn fine one too. Anyway, here comes a clickity-link!

A cute little Chimera for my Imperial Guard. Too bad that I haven't seemed to find time for any of my projects, since I started at the university.

Edit: The Chimera isn't really that light. I've seemed to screw up with the camera again. How typical.
