    Heavy Metal Vikings - Warriors of Chaos

    Time to update the intro a bit...

    The storm of Chaos has arrived - great warbands are formed everywhere and the dark hordes are marching towards the lands of the Imperium, heh - and I am still painting. I am closer to my goal of having it all painted to a pretty good tabletop-standard, but infantry-heavy hordes have one problem... LOTS of infantry. No, just kidding, I enjoy it, (except for basecoating, basecoating is a PAIN) and it's even kind of relaxing.

    So, here is a list of stuff I own and links to where to find pics of it in this plog:

    Marauders
    ca. 200 / 2XX painted (gotta count 'em again)

    -> 1H Weapon & Shield Norse Marauders

    -> 2H-Weapon / Greatweapon Marauders, female

    -> 1H Weapon & Shield Khornate Marauders

    -> 1H Weapon & Shield Marauders + 2H Weapon Marauders

    Chaos Warriors
    ca. 90 / 1XX painted (gotta count 'em again)

    -> Shield & 1H-Weapon Chaos Warriors

    Chaos Mammoth
    1 / 1 painted

    -> Angkor, Father of Mammoths

    Chaos Chariots
    0 / 6 painted

    Warshrine
    0 / 1 painted

    Marauder Horsemen
    0 / 20 painted

    Chaos Knights
    0 / 20 painted

    Warhounds of Chaos
    0 / 40 painted

    Chaos Spawn
    0 / 4 painted

    Hellcannon
    0 / 1 painted

    Giants
    0 / 3 painted

    Characters, Heroes and whatnot
    0 / XXX (seriously gotta count all that stuff, I collected so many "chaotic" miniatures)

    And here is my inspiration for this project (though I am not half as good a painter as he is):

    Also, the Uruk-hai arrived (and I was kinda shocked to see they are somewhat incompatible with Warhammer... stupid different scale). I converted them anyway, compared to the "standard" Marauders they could be from a different tribe or just youngsters going for a more "elegant" fighting style.

    I will put them on a skirmisher base later, so they rank up nicely but I get to use the round bases and don't have to buy new square ones.

    Some of the gaps you see are filled with glue, and should be fixed once those lads are primed.

    What troubles me right now, is that I can only fit 9 (instead of 10) marauders on the mammoth howdah, I didn't realize the basket in the middle is shorter on the left than on the right... I am not exactly sure if just putting Marauders on 20mm bases would help or not :/

    If anybody has suggestions for barbarians / viking-type troops preferably with throwing axes in 25mm - 28mm scale... drop me a line or two. Right now I am looking into Lord of the Rings Ironguard, they have that anglo-saxon look and are somwhat reminiscent of the Chaos Dwarves (or maybe I should just get a bunch of those!?).

    Anyway, comments would be much appreciated.

    It's from Westwind Productions, for their Dwarf Wars game (sold by Old Glory in the US). They have some really nice minis.

    Re: Heavy Metal Vikings - Chaos Mortals

    Finally got me other unit of Nordvolk ready. Frontrow / command will be done when I am a better painter, or have more time (most likely both )

    Will be starting on the female Marauders (Shieldmaidens of Kronos) tomorrow.

    Some pictures:

    All that is left to do is the snow on the bases, but I will see to that when the Shieldmaidens are done.

    Nice, but what happened to their feet? Did they disappear in the basing?

    Yeah, they will get covered in snow later on and I figured it might look good if the boots get some grey-whitish appearance so it looks like they are really in the snow.

    I dunno if it will work out, it's a test of sorts.

    Thanks for the comment.

    If I may say your army is looking great so far. You've definitely got the Nordic feel you were going for....what models are those Vikings?

    I look forward to seeing more

    I like those viking models, they seem to be a great replacement for marauders. What exactly are they?

    @Sharke: Thanks.

    @Sharke & Kamizanate: Those lovely Nords are from Westwind Production (UK) / Old Glory (US). They are for their Dwarf Wars set of rules.

    See 'em / buy 'em here: http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk...php?cPath=1_16

    They are very niceley sculpted, fantasy enough to fit into Warhammer and come at VERY reasonable prices (10 models for 10 pounds much better than the 30€ for 16 Marauders approach of GW)

    Re: Heavy Metal Vikings - Chaos Mortals

    So are you going to have a mix of these guys and LotR minis in your army? Because if you are, you could maybe use other models like Dunlendings and/or Rohirrim? They look pretty Germanic-like. It's your army though, so do what you like. So....keep the models coming, I'm curious to see what else you're gonna do.

    Re: Heavy Metal Vikings - Chaos Mortals

    @Kamizanate: Yeah, they are the sword / shield regiment. (also avaiable are spear-units, and two-handed axe units).

    I actually got the two-handed axe unit ready, I maybe should take a picture, huh?

    @Sharke: Oh, I have all sorts of minis mixed in this - there is a lot of Chronopia- and Celtos-stuff coming, a bit of Confrontation and a few odd ones from here and there (Red Box games, Reaper and the like). And I am right now looking into getting some real vikings so I can use them for WHFB and also have a base for future Warhammer Ancient Battles fun.

    The only problem with the LOTR-minis is, they are the wrong scale (at least the Uruk-Hai plastics are noticably smaller). I dunno if the metals are any better, but Rohirrim do have the right look (though, they are just fantasyfied Saxons).

    In general, I am open to all kinds of suggestions regarding minis - so if you happen to stumble over something that looks nordic/fantasy - drop me a line.

    Oh, and don't worry everyone, there are good ol' half-naked GW-plastics in the pipe as well (we all know showing up at tournaments with figures not clearly GW can sometimes end in longwinded discussions with silly players - so I have a backup plan for that and get more lads ready for grandscale battles).

    Re: Heavy Metal Vikings - Chaos Mortals

    It's the evening of the final day of my vacation... and I can say, painted 50 models, converted 20 and built 2 1/2 metal-kits in 2 weeks ain't that bad (I wanted to get a few more things done, and still haven't got my full army-shot but that's something to tackle later, I guess).

    On Monday I will be working again, which leaves mostly just the weekends to get stuff done... but I will try hard to keep posting updates and stuff.

    For now: sword maidens (proxies for 2-HW wielding Marauders).
    There is a definitive lack of females in the GW range, to counter that I picked the lovely sword maidens of Kronos (Target Games / Chronopia) to fight in my hordes.

    They are much more delicate than the usual GW stuff, and a bit smaller than the average GW-miniguy. They make up for that with big swords and cleavage ;D

    As usual, not yet fully finished (missing snow and command).

    Marching on...

    Okay, I am not dead yet!
    It's just that I didn't want to post the results of my "100+ miniatures assembling-basing-priming-spree (tm)" just yet.

    It was time to bring some heavy metal to the heavy metal vikings, thus I present to you almost 50 WIP Chaos Warriors (had their first wash-stage). They look brighter in the picture, because the boltgunmetal drybrush under the badab-black still reflects light nicely. No picture can do the effect really justice, they either look to dark/dull or too bright/greyish. Anyway, next I will do the highlights on the armor, leather-stuff, cloaks and golden stuff.

    One word on the chaos warrior models, they are a BLAST to paint - even my noobish skills can produce some very nice looking minis, and quick too - I got the whole lot down within 2 days of seriously working on them - and soon there are only the fun parts left to paint (weapons, skulls, horns ;D).

    Here we go:

    I love those female Marauder models-GW could learn a hell of lot from those sculpts.
    Where did you obtain them? I have been scouring the internet but have been unable to track them down-I'd love to get hold of some and shamelessly steal your idea

    Loving the army so far, looking forward to seeing more!
