Eater Jumps on the Looted Bandwagon

I decided to jump on the Ork Bandwagon. As others have done, a friend and I bought the Assault on Black Reach starter set and split it up. He took the marines, and I took the orks, and we were both dazzled by our new starter armies. That was all the excuse I needed to delve into scratch-building new orky vehicles.

I love the new Ork codex, and the endlessly customizable rules for looted wagons and battlewagons are a scratch-builder's dream. This looted wagon is one of the first projects. I wanted to keep it open-topped, with a boom-gun and sponson big shootas. The weapons are all magnetized in case I want to swap stuff out, or give it the ability to transport troops. The paintjob is still WIP, but any comments and criticism are appreciated.

Starting painting up another looted wagon last night. This one's a "skorcha-wagon" with upgraded hard-case. It's a bit smaller compared to the boom-wagon, but I still think it's a characterful tank.

Loving the tanks they really look "gud 'n' propa" by orkish standards anyway lol, the one thing i like most about the orks is that you can use nearly anything to make stuff for them, and it looks like your off to a good start, keep them coming .

Paint all round bits of the hull (tower and fuel-tank) yellow, bright yellow. Then have Yellow Submarine playing from it, would be awesome and orky, try to find someone to mixture with the file on the MP3 to make it sound real old and looted.
"Wez all lif ina yello' defmachine, yello' defmachine, yello defmachine"
Come on, would it not be AWESOME?

Also love the way the turret looks when it's taken off of the tank, "Ok, I had dis 'ere dokking thing, but then tha boyz said 'Loose da Dakka, we wan' space ta ride wiff ya' so I brought me old cutta zippy-blade 'ere an took off da big dakka"

Yep, that's what it is. As Providence said, anything goes as long as it's done up 'Gud and Propa.'

Here's a few more pics that show off some of the neat extras, fueled by my new-found love of gluing magnets to everything.

"Oiy, how we s'posed ta all fit in dis puny skorcha wagon?"

"'Ere ya go, lads! Pile in!"

Neknoh, that's a wicked idea. Stay tuned, I sense an Ork Submersible in this project log's future... (devious smiley face)

And speaking of swapping out turrets...

Here's the trukk I threw together last month. Not a looted wagon, but still fun to build. Like the others, it still needs painted up. I built the big shoota gun mount so that it can swivel and fire 360 degrees. The gunner's favorite thing to do is to fire a spray of dakka backwards to make all the passenger-boyz hit the deck.

It's been a productive week, but my interest in painting all these vehicles is beginning to dwindle. So what better way to divert myself and watch my thread rating crash than by going off on a Defense Laser tangent? I built this yesterday to use for a story campaign I've been writing. It's also going to be one of the objectives in an upcoming Apocalypse battle.

Here's the link to the data sheet for the Defense (Defence?) Laser: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_...ence_Laser.pdf

Currently it looks a bit like a chocolate cake, but never fear-- the brown paint is to seal in the foam before I give it a good undercoat spray.

The hand is from the blockhead titan templates. I think it'll look good once painted up.

I can see your yellow death machine now (I use proper lingo as I love my Marines!).

"Sergeant... there is a yellow... thing... speeding towards us with music playing... should we fry it?"
"Nope! CAUSE WE ALL LIVE IN A YELLOW SUBMARINE!!!"
    "Heretic!!!"

It will fry the brains of your enemies...

Re: Eater Jumps on the Looted Bandwagon

I ran out of spray paint in the middle of undercoating the defense laser so had to go out for a supply run. At the store, I priced out things like spackle and texture-in-a-can spray for future terrain projects. All very reasonably priced.

I also picked up something to fill our Operation Christmas Child shoebook. If anyone's interested, there's an international relief organization called Samaritan's Purse that runs this program that accepts and distributes shoeboxes full of gifts for needy children. Here is the explanation for the shoe-box thing:http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index...ack_A_Shoe_Box
And the link to the different world-wide offices if you want to donate toys/gifts in your region: http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index...ldwide_Offices

    Back to the projects at-hand...
I ran across a good find today at a hobby shop:

Looted Konigstiger! It was sitting on the bottom shelf looking forlorn, and at a cheap $11 (usd) I had to buy it. It's a beautiful model for the price, and may become a battlewagon if I can bring myself to alter it.

My FoW Germans came out to inspect the new tank, and while I can't speak german, I'm pretty sure I heard them hatching plans to loot it back from the Orks.

Nice conversions. I know what happened to your Manta.
I would add a lot more rust and dirt. They seem more orky that way.
I like the wheels on your truck. Where are they from?

Re: Eater Jumps on the Looted Bandwagon

    Neknoh, that cracked me up.
I saved your lyrics as a Word document, and the auto spell-checker freaked out and painted everything red. Apparently it's not set to "Ork-Speak."

Luckily, my wife is a Beatles fan, and quite a good guitar player. She's tentatively agreed to play the music for "Neknoh's Yellow Defmachine" even though it took a while to explain to her how this all came about. Doing the Ork voices might be a bit more difficult. It'll probably be up to me to do that part.

@Tommygun, the trukk wheels are the bases from old Mageknight figures. I'm sure the folks at Wizkidsgames would be excited to know that their products are still being used for something.

Yeah, I couldn't get into the Manta thing. Lack0f's blown that project out of the water anyway. It'd probably help if I was more excited about Tau. I'm much more of an Ork Mek personality. I just like gluing scrap together and sticking guns on top.

    Speaking of which....
My love affair with the Konigstiger lasted all of two hours, just about the time it took my wife to get home with the pen screwdriver. I unscrewed the upper body and set that and the turret aside for a future project (2nd battlewagon, yellow defmachine submersible?), and started building off of the track assembly and lower body.

You may recognize the guns from the first looted wagon. I'm using them here just to test-fit the gun emplacements. I envision this thing to be covered in magnetized hard points so I can mix and swap weapons options.

My current thinking is whether I want it to be open topped, 'ard cased, or interchangable. I figure there are benefits to all of these. Making it interchangable will require a bit more work, but will maximize the model's use.

After a weekend of building, the battlewagon is close to being ready for that undercoat. Unfortunately, the weather's been pretty bad this week so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get out to spray it. The defense laser has been painted, I just need to go back through and add some details on it. I'll try to get pictures of it as soon as my camera recharges.

That battle wagon came out great.
Do you remember the name of the company that made the German tank?
If you get real desperate to paint it, you can do what I sometimes do.
I turn my shower into a spray booth.
I line it with newspaper taped to the walls and a fan at the window.
    Just wear a mask.

A shower spray booth! Necessity is truly the mother of ingenuity. I may have to try that out this winter.

The german tank came in a clear plastic bag with no markings save for the price tag. On the bottom of the model it says BMC Toys. There was another more expensive one in a bag right beside it that had been pre-painted. And the paint-job was pretty terrible.

I did a quick websearch and came up with an online store that carries a lot of their products.

Here's the tank I just converted into the b-wagon: http://www.hobbybunker.com/details.cfm?ID=2400

Some of their other products may be worth looking at too. Here's a bunker with a flak cannon on top. http://www.hobbybunker.com/details.cfm?ID=2406

    Tank traps! http://www.hobbybunker.com/details.cfm?ID=2410

I wish I was kidding, but they also sell dead plastic horses in case you feel the need... http://www.hobbybunker.com/details.cfm?ID=2413

Since it's too chilly to spray-paint the bwagon tonight, I've spent the last hour or so painting on my old Lost & the Damned infantry. These guys haven't seen the light of day for over 9 months but I've decided to chip away at them since I'm temporarily burned out on Orks. I've also been itching to get some of the Forgeworld chaos renegade models, but I'm worried that they'll make my homemade LatD conversions look (more) horrible by comparison.

Re: Eater Jumps on the Looted Bandwagon

Update on the orbital defense laser. I busted my hump to build and paint it for an apocalypse battle at our store last weekend, and then the organizer canceled the event on account of "people pissing him off."

I've still got my own plans for this gun. It's the primary objective in a story campaign that involves space marines fighting to take a planet back from the Orks. The defense laser has been looted by a crazed big mek who is currently having the time of his life taking potshots at space marine strike cruisers in low orbit.

If enough people are interested, I may upload the mini-campaign in PDF format once we've playtested the missions a bit. It's a very AoBR-friendly project as most of the missions are between 600-1000 pt games.
