    A Varyngr thread: Stronghold Morthwyl

ok, if Varyngr means nothing to you then look here:
    http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89616
    here: http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59021
    and especially here: http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46402

Think of them as the ones who didnt get eaten by the Nids...

    Important
I later changed the type of model I was using. The Victrix are here and next page. Final models start next page too

    started work at long last:

    from left to right:
1 two hacksaw cuts above and below knee, didn't lose enough height.
2 An unmolested model held together with bluetack
3 Two double hacksaw cuts above and below knee
4 two penknife cuts above and below knee.

I'm going with no3. the penknife saw cause too much incidental damage just brushing past and two hacksaw cuts don't remove enough material.
Finding this I let my orky side take over and superglued two sawblades together. I'm still not sure they'll be short enough but never mind.

    Intended list:

    5 holmgard
    10 clangard
    5 foragers
    2 gunships
    1 prospector's trike
    5 outriders
    5 embittered
    4 highgard
    1 battle mechanik + 3 bot retinue
    1 grudgekeeper
    5 stoneteeth
    5 iron heads
    1 Warleader
    1 Living Ancestor

so that's 48 bodies and 10-20 sheilds to start with plus robots

Casualties so far: one chair and one lightbulb. don't ask.

Re: A Varyngr thread: Stronghold Morthwyl

ok so been fairly busy. Girlfriend buggered off abroad again and that always results in lots of conversions. Last time a wardrobe became a desk and an old door became a chest of drawers.

    this time is more productive:

7 Clangard including an Oathkeeper, medic and vox. (the medic is in the sniper pose for some reason)

the clangard are the basic militia that everyone has to take their turn in. you arrive, you move slowly and shoot anything that looks as though it may come closer.

a complete unit of Holmgard - including a rather irritated Oathkeeper with CCW and bionics, vox and medic.

The holmgard are the tough nuts, grizzled veterans who hold the corridors and tunnels of the Stronghold. Unlike the Empire (Darth's) or the Federation (Worf's) the Varyngr don't build tunnels with handy bits to hide behind. Hence the sheilds.

    two questions.

ok, backpacks? the holmgard will probably get them for stability. What about the clangard?

and Special weapons. What do people suggest and how do I model them?

yeah. forgot the photos. don't drink and drivel.

the 'bionics' - honestly, don't sneeze when you've pieces of plastic on the desk.

Medic reaches for his gun. Unarmed doctors? pah
Observe the slight balance issue in the holmgard behind him.

but that guy's got talent (and bits). Are those goggles on the model's head?

Honestly, I'm using these models cos I could afford them and I wanted a change from converting in pewter - this is somewhat less effort.

The beards I'm neglecting on the basis it's hard to get a seal with a face mask.
It's hard to get a seal with anything but a club.

    But yay, a reply!
perhaps they'll look better once painted...

a poor photo to start with, compressed when uploaded and then again when i link to it from here...

Is the guy on the left fighting or singing baritone?
    never mind.

    Foragers.

and a truly truly silly attempt at the Bullock Jetcycle for my outriders.

the army so far (before heavies, HQ and the outriders):

the little guy at the front will be the LA. I'm happy with his pose but not the head. He looks too damn young. maybe a beard.

Even more WIP then usual this time:

My local pound shop is currently selling these for their usual price:

After half an hour's work with a panel saw i had this:

    which made me try this:

    and then this:

with the rear definetly looking like this:

Take my word for it, those shiny bits have lots of lovely mechanical texture

There are several different ideas for transports in the rules thread, some are straight rhinos, some modifeid rhinos, some are burrowing transports, some are burrowing drop pods.

Much as I'd like to field 6 rhinos I haven't the cash to drop on 18quid a pop models. Should I (attempt) to model these up as 'count as' rhinos, or attempt to make them look like possible burrowing machines?

Lets face it, they'll never look like the 40k rhino model, but with a sloped front and some attention to armoured panelling they should do for transports.
If they're going to be Bore Miners or Moles or Termite eqivs then they'll need some type of digger. I'm currently thinking about a rolling maw:

but can't think of anything to make the maw from.
    Any ideas?

What models are you using for these varyngr, they're quite interesting to me. I like what you're going for with these but they don't shout squat/varingyr to me, more like slightly less rodent like ratlings.

Those look like the new Victrix Napoleonic British.

yup, the penisular box to be specific. Great models with lots of character, I'd recommend them.

Now it looks like I've been neglecting these guys a little recently and truth told, I have.
Frep, your comparison to ratlings really hit home. Starting with true scale and slicing down, they still look too dainty. Oh well, it'll be incorpated into the Stronghold fluff.

A better reason for lack of updates is the dodgy internet connection preventing me from uploading photos. One USB stick to work and voila:

Special weapon: ZZapps (modified arc welders?)

Side View Exo Armour and power gauntlet.

Front View Exo Armour and power hammer

    Special Weapon: Flamer

You can't see it but there's a fuel tank on his back made from a sleeping roll.

    'rhino' compared to orgional firetruck

That little blob of grey in the middle is the Living ancestor to give a sense of scale.

I've another four of the firetruck models.
I could probably turn them all into 'rhinos' but variety is the spice of life. Perhaps two more as 'rhinos' and the remaining two as giant tunnelling landraider equivs?
    Or even a gunship...

Re: A Varyngr thread: Stronghold Morthwyl

    whoops, forgot these:

A bit underqualified as quadlaunchers, but may graduate to heavy support or just heavy weapons within squads.

Since the codex(s)(ssss) are in a state of flux I'm building to ORk catergories:

    Boom
    Dakka
    Zzapp
    Template

And I REALLY need to start painting - I'll look for some primer this weekend. Assuming GW is overpriced, any recommendations?

I can manage bore da and order coffee, other wise it's just Twll din pob sais and some very klingonesque drinking songs. I've a welsh birth certificate and I'm at cardiff and been living with welsh speakers the last two years.
Having said that, the two with the best claim to that tended to argue in klingon so my understanding of the laguage may be more horribly skewed then I thought.
