If your on Facebook then the Warhammer 2nd Ed 40k group has a files section thats worth checking out. I recently compiled all the WD Q&As into a single pdf and put it up there. I'm currently compiling all the Wargear Cards and Vehicle Cards into a single pdf booklet.
At least the add-on nature of 2nd edition was less drastic than that of the RT, where even some of the core sections of the rules were re-done several times over in the span of 6 or so years. In a way, the basic 40K rules are in many ways wrapped up late RT rules, though there were also a lot of new items added, like the vehicle hit location and damage charts or the psychic rules.Originally Posted by Commissar von Toussaint

I put some stuff up on ebay over the holidays and decided to check some of my saved searches.
Hmmm, the 2nd ed. 40k models are going for VERY cheap, particularly the vehicles. I may need to make some unplanned purchases.
This bodes well for anyone interested in "going retro" and collecting the old armies. Affordable and rewarding.

Once I realized that everything I did on Facebook was being tracked and monetized, I lost interest in it.
The fact that they keep switching stuff around only confirmed my decision.
I like the old Rhino-based kits, and some of them are going for a fraction of what "current" kits cost.
I missed the Rogue Trader years when Rhinos were 3 to a box or something, but $20 is very reasonable, and I saw several at that price.
Brought a tear to my eye.

That is one of the reasons why I can't stand it. Another big problem that I had is that if you were looking for something from over a week ago, it is not that easy to find it. I ended up scrolling through all kinds of comments to find the topic that I was interested in from two months ago. Its basically good at current events or catching up with estranged friends and family, but the groups were a pain to navigate through for me.

As much as Warseer is derided for its clunky software, you can find topic and scroll back through them with ease.
This is particularly useful when looking up some tidbit of lore you recall seeing.
You are correct that most social media is about capturing the "instant" without surrounding context. This emphasis on the present causes people to behave in often horrible ways, thinking only of the now and saying things they never would in person. We had flame wars here of course, but nothing like the viciousness I see on social media.
Getting back to the topic at hand, I'm pleased to see that 2nd edition books are still above the rest of the market. That edition really does stand apart from the other versions. When I began clearing out my GW holdings more than a decade ago, I found that the 3rd/4th Edition books were literally worthless. People wouldn't buy them for the cost of shipping!
I guess they now have a minimal value for collectors, but since my intent was to clear out stuff before moving, their failure to sell (and the unwillingness anyone local to take them for free!) consigned them to the dumpster, something I rarely do.

2nd edition memories!
My Warp Spiders becoming expert open top vehicle killers. We may have misunderstood the rules but I would take special care to web any incoming landspeeders so the crew couldn’t evade from their cockpit positions
Imperial Eversors being truly terrifying- only my Avatar being brave enough to chop them up and wade through the explosion.
Assault cannons.....
Participating in the Ichar IV mega event at Edinburgh GW - Tyranids versus IG. Commissars getting dismembered. Ratings being ripped down from their cliff top trenches by turbo leaping Hornagaunts. Biovores dropping spire mines between two Leman Russ tanks, flipping my (pink painted) Leman Russ into someone else’s in mutual annihilation.
I enjoyed it for what limited games I played
That sounds about right. Template weapons used against any confined space did horrific damage. Which is quite appropriate.2nd edition memories!

One of the often-overlooked points about 2nd is that it was by far the most realistic (and therefore intuitive) of all GW's games. While the close combat system was clunky (unless you follow the link to my streamlined procedure!) it was more balanced and realistic than the one used in WHFB during the Herohammer era.
The problem with 2nd was that it had too much detail for a platoon-sized game. However, if you strip the needless dice rolling (scatter for jump packs every time they move???) you get a very gritty and exciting game.
You also get a very tactically challenging one. GW's design team at that time was clearly thinking of squad-level miniatures and wargaming. They already had Fantasy, which was all about melees, so 40k became about shooting.
Guess what? If you don't use cover, shooting will kill you. Even superlative armor (and Terminators had it!) won't save you forever.
At the same time, GW preserved the truth that melee combat is more decisive. Each army had some sort of melee specialist, but obviously some were better at it than others. That kept things interesting.
Finally there was the best game balance GW ever achieved. No, they didn't suddenly figure out how to do the points correctly, they simply made everything on the board really deadly. This was the game where tactics truly trumped army selection.
I remember during 3rd/4th or thereabouts someone shared a comic where to players were about to play a game of 40k and all the one had to do was say what was in his army and the other one conceded the game. It was funny because it was true!
In 2nd there were so many ways you could kill things (including your tank flipping onto the enemy).
Of course you got massacres as well, but those were often quite funny because of the detail in the game. My friends still laugh over a game where the Nids absolutely massacred some Space Marines and only a single Terminator was alive on the last turn.
Going for the clean sweep, the Nids surrounded the guy with genestealers and then had the Hive Tyrant fire the Venom Cannon for good measure. (You could fire into melees in those wonderful old days)
The Tyrant missed and the shot scattered onto one of the Genestealers, and then the template curved neatly around the lone Marine, killing all the Genestealers! It was too perfect.
