classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

No fancy campaigns this week, we just had a small city fight game between clans.

My opponent wanted to run a binary of mechs and battle armor. so I countered him with a re-enforced star.
He had me on tonnage but I think I had him on purposed units.


I broke out a few minis I had not used in a while and a new one- the bruin.

As I said above he brought more weight to the table however in the city environment, having more units that could jump and a number of them that didn't have to worry about falling due to pavement turned out to be a great benefit.

I used the bruin during setup to draw off his hellbringer and cauldron born, allowing me to shift my focus onto his assault mechs. focus fire and a smattering of small hits to the head managed to to drop the turkina and dire wolf

in the exchange I took a spread of damage across the protomechs, lost 1 tank and took an engine critical to the other. but that was ok because the dire wolf fell unconscious in front of the immobile tank allowing me to finish it off with my streaks.

The bruin backed up by protomech fire managed to down the cauldron born but it took a beating and was taken out by the hellbringer. which in turn was taken down by a double gyro crit from the osteon. the kitfox died to protmech fire, even though I missed him the second time with almost every shot. I managed to get the one shot I needed to the CT rear to core him out.

We ended the game there since I had only effectively lost 1 mech and 2 tanks and he was down to battle armor, nearly half of which was damaged or destroyed.

What saved me this game was the insane number of low damage head shots combined with pilot shock from falls and ammo explosions. only 2 of his mechs didn't die to head/pilot damage.

Double report weekend-


Yes I am lazy and I am putting up a few pictures from last weekends pickup games and this weeks scenario.

First off a throw down of titans.

lyran 10th VS an opposition force of more lyrans, ......call it training.



I decided the desert rats hadn't been out in a while, so lots of low heat heavy hitters meaning gauss and heavy gauss. the enemy atlas was the first to come out to play and he decided that he didn't like the attention of 3 assault mechs so he backed around the corner.

Not wishing to let him "get away" I sent my "scout mech" battlemaster after him. sensing free backshots he moved his rifleman in behind me. not to worry though tonight was the night of 12s.

His commanders thunderhawk decided to peak out from cover to face my commanders fafnir. first shot put a heavy gauss into his head killing his commander. after a bit of action with the atlas I hit his rifleman with a heavy gauss..............in the head. my this isn't going well for somebody named not me.

the battlemaster took a beating but managed to finish the atlas, so with one mech left the catapult wisely ran away.

Well that went a lot faster than we thought, so next up we did some solaris as a new player wanted to learn the game,, had great fun and came out on top finishing off the last enemies pillager........with another head shot.

Next up, the raid.

The raid.
So this week we set up a scenario mission for our players.
in doing so I tried to bring into play units and setting we normally don't use. including battle armor, infantry platoons, and night battles.


The target zone is a research facility for classified military hardware. the attackers are looking to get battle armor inside to do a smash and grab.

The defending force is facility security.

The attacking force.-
.komodo
.raijin
.tokugawa heavy tank
.X2 squads of raiden battle armor
.X2 goblin IFV

The defending force
.X2 urban mechs with ac20 and one with a RAC 5
.X2 gallion light tanks
.X2 vendetta light tanks
.kanazushi battle armor squad
.X2 laser infantry patoons.

The game started out as a peekaboo match as both sides jockeyed to gain an advantage. as dusk fell the defenders fell back to the safety of their walls. forcing the attackers to come to them.

It was a downright brutal fight with neither side giving advantage. although it was funny to watch the attackers run away from the urban mech every time it looked at them funny with its AC20.

Eventually the attackers managed to route the defenders but at great cost. the raijin got killed by the infantry with a head shot after being crippled. the komodo' s armor was nearly stripped, the infantry also managed to score a goblin kill and put down 2 of the power armored attackers.

The first 2 pictures on the waterfall table was a clan star VS 2 kurita lances, has some crazy shots happen like one of my kurita assault mechs being downed by a single clan medium laser and the kurita daikyu earning the chuck Norris award for kicking the legs clean off 2 clan mechs

The rocky desert table was an inner sphere solaris VI arena battle with vehicles, we all started in a light and moved up weight classes as we died. came out on top with that one by blowing one players turret off his last tank and immobilizing another players super tank in a pass.

The bridge table was a clan on clan free for all with the enemy team coming out on top, the UAC20 packing cauldron born was MVP for their team, he kept hitting vital areas and getting both shots on target.

Last but not least, a pure zellbrigan match with forced withdrawl rules. between star adders and blood spirits, using only mechs and rules each faction has access to. a successful route for the blood spirits only retiring one mech (the blood kite) and takig the adders completely off the field. MVP went to the blood asp for running off a turkina and a dire wolf.

Well I am going to try to stay on top of this, it was a busy Saturday for me.

Using the Babylon 5 wars system we did a star trek pre federation battle between the romulans, andorians, Vulcans, and xindi. we ended up having to proxy siome ships since the attack wing game doesn't have all those miniatures available

The we used to the new star wars armada figures for another B5 wars conversion game sending a victory SD up against some retro clone wars era ARC-170s and a CIS carrier cruiser. we again proxied a bit since we didn't have the right ships and I didn't have the proper printouts for the more current nebulan or X-wings.

The battle as decided by the fighters. he was going to fast and overshot my ARCs with his tie advanced allowing them to take out his star destroyer. however it ended up being a route when he got his ties in the game. they took down my cruiser and destroyed or chased off the ARCs.

To the end-

the final battle of the night was a force of quad mechs VS a force of marauder/marauder IIs. the amount of damage we were throwing back ad forth between all their heavy gauss and ERPPC fire was amazing, amazing in the fact that the game lasted as long as it did with mechs surviving quite a while.

I ended up winning the game in a bit of a lucky streak dropping two of the marauders with head shots, heavy gauss to the face tends to hurt.

This weekends scenario was a preset, the GM provided all the mechs and the secenerio.

The swords of light regiment were tasked with escorting a lance of an'ting legion units(in blue) to their extraction point on the far end of the table. house davion sent a heavy blocking force intent on capturing or destroying the an'ting mechs for the data they were tasked with delivering.

Ther kurita force tended to be light and fast with a single heavy lance while the davions brought weight and numbers with a majority of their mechs in assaults and heavies.

panthers, spider, wasp, locust, cicada, dragons etc..VS rifleman, atlas, Cyclops, grasshopper, catapults etc..

The an'ting forces split . forcing the davion force to shift to center. as the kurita forces had expected it opened up an escape corridor on the right flank. This was no easy task given the river and an entire table full of heavy woods.

The an'ting successfully got 3 of the 4 mechs off the table in this manner giving them a solid victory. the last an'ting mech being slow and mostly armed with LRMs mostly spent the match playing hide and seek with the davion missile support lance while the kurita heavy unit swung around to try and relieve him. With a major victory for house kurita(3 escaped out of 4) the davions called the game.

Well this last bit has been quite a long road.

We have been limited by time and availability of players . as such we played this game over the course of several weekends. given the size of the game it's amazing it only took this long.


The setting
clan star adder VS clan wolf as such the mechs used by both sides were specifically chosen to be units used by those factions and their favored weapons.

each side had 2 points of battle armor and 4 stars worth of mechs that's 20 mechs per side for those who are counting.

Half the adder force tended to be heavier, slower and more ranged than the wolf forces, choosing not to enter the city proper where the more nimble wolves could nip at their flanks.

Clan honor was being observed, forcing some mechs to take very little part in the battle. My commander was in a stone rhino while his was in an iconic dire wolf widowmaker In the single turn of fire that they engaged each other bth hitting with 4 weapons, unfortunately for the wolves the stone rhino took a large pulse to the head and returned the favor by hitting the widowmaker in the head.....with a gauss rifle killing his commander.

We have a fun ammo explosion that took down 3 mechs standing in the back blast zone. we also were using forced withdrawl rules which caused a number of mechs to be forced out of the fight.

In the end the wolves had lost nearly half their total force compared to the adders loss of only a quarter of their forces mostly among the lighter weight classes. seeing the disparity in weight and damage the wolves surrendered the field and were given safecon out of the battle area.

Well it has been a while since I last posted. Where still doing some battletech but not many campaigns. this was a one off capture/defend scenario attack on a research facility testing rediscovered LAM technology.

The attackers were a bit to timid even though they had the weight in numbers/tonnage. Even with the defenders coming into the battle piecemeal as they scrambled.

It allowed the LAM to start up and escape.

I have not gotten around to getting this one up from a couple weekends ago.

It started as a 1v1 one pickup game and it turned into a 3 person knock down drag out fight

The scenario was a city defense on the part of the inner sphere

Since the cats tend to favor long range engagements they sent in the lighter units to harass and flush us out. the faster combine units played the cat and mouse game while the slower assaults moved out to engage.

Overall it was a good game the steiners were giving no quarter and fighting to the last while the cats and kurita forces preferred to use forced withdrawl and save the mechs from complete destruction.

There were quite a few internal and gyro hits on both sides but a surprising lack of head hits. in the end it was a single dragonfly facing off with a mangled banshee and a wolverine in pretty good shape. the last round the wolverine and dragonfly engine and gyro damaged each other for an epic finish. the clans lost but only just barely.

Well it's ben a while since I added anything here. schedule conflicts and injuries have led to a lack of our battletech group from playing much(not that I haven't been playing other games myself since I work at a game store once a week).

3 of us got together for a classic clan VS IS battle (2 lances VS 1 star). and we had some new terrain we got to play with to boot in the form of a river canyon-

Appropriate to the terrain I chose a medium lance of my second deiron regulars(mountain fighters by trade).

We faced off against a nova cat star-

we set up mostly on the central ridgeline and left into the river valley. the clan forces split in an attempt to pincer.

The battle shifted left into the valley and back to the ridge as the clan player first focused on killing the big mechs in the end however it wasn't good enough. the mercs took the brunt of the damage(and bad dice rolls-he repeatedly jammed his RACs) being totally destroyed or forced to withdraw ( we use forced with drawl rules to speed up the game).

In the end the clans withdrew with only the dragonfly combat capable. the derions while bloodied only lost the lightly armored raijin.

MVP for our lance went to the wolverine, in my opinion the kurita variant being the best of the chassis.

Battletech is a classic, nice to see some folks still playing. Would it be possible to get either pregame or post game closer in pics of the different forces? Not a pic of every mech but like, here's the Deiron's, here's the Mercs, here's the Nova's.

Although I don't know how impressed you would be the nova cat player just has his stuff primered black, the second deiron are using their black/green cammo as it appears in the field manual, the mercs were a mix of colors.

Still here, still battleteching-
Well its been quite a while since I last posted anything here. I am always gaming on Saturdays it's just not always battletech, that being said I am doing double duty with terrain now that I am also playing epic scale 8th edition 40K. fortunately they are both similar in scale. Adding to the line of JR miniature building I already had I added ruins and a few other buildings from novus design studios, battlefield in a box, as well as the new mosterapocalypse line (I need more).

I only rermembered to snap a set of starting pictures this time. the battle was not going well for me at the beginning so things got pretty intense.

My forces were -

As I said it started badly-turn 1 the wolverine got hammered and I di no damage in return, turn 2 faired little better-more damage to the wolverine and the cat got hit center torso floating crit for 2-engine and a gyro.

we use the forced withdrawal rules to speed the game along-internal damage on 2 torsos/3 limbs, 2 engine or 1 gyro hit the mech retires from the field so the cat was out. I managed to give back some damage this turn at least, mostly to the bushwacker.

turn 3 the warhammer became the priority target and I hurt him pretty good, I was starting to take damage to the daikyu now but most enemy fire was still on the poor wolverine.

Turn 4+5 were a bit static with only the wolverine jumping around, falling down, losong an arm(the one with its large pulse of course) and then running away.

The warhammer tried to finish off the wolverine and got shot in the back doing enough damage to take him out of the fight.

Turn 6 the bushwacker ran right up on the daikyu and hurt him pretty bad, the return fire killed the bushwacker via ammo explosion which ended up killing both of them.

The final turn we went straight for the throw down wolverine VS battlemaster and shugenja VS thunderbolt......in both cases I managed a single floating crit on both mechs doing 2 engine hits each. the return fire finally forced the wolverine to withdraw, but since the shugenja was undamaged up to this point he ended up being the last man standing for a bloody kurita victory.

More fun..this time we took a moment to do that thing that everybody loves.....kill the woby kill the woby ....


That's right fighting the nuke happy jihadists that everybody loves to hate in classic battletech.

One of the players in the group built up a quad lance consisting of 2 white flames and 4 blue flames so house stiener accepted the challenge with a re-enforced heavy lance consisting of a

.cestus
.falconer
.razorback
.night hawk

This was straight up no chaser those crazy blakists just charged straight in and no quarter was given.
The first to go down was one of the white flames when the dragonfire put a gauss round through his face All the mechs on both sides took a beating (the cestus most of all on our side) but when the damaged was dolled out the flames took the short end of the stick loosing many legs and/or torsos.....killed them to a man without loosing a single mech, although there is going to be some serious hangar shop time for repairs.

The WOBies just couldn't seem to put shots on the same location to save their lives, even with multiple head hits (mostly from small weapons) and many rounds of winning initiative.
