Very nice read and neat tables for Battletech. Personally, I prefer the hex maps, but the visual effect of the miniatures rules is cool.

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

Well things do not go exactly as planned and our next installment of the campaign was put on hold, however this does not mean that we were going to pass up the opportunity to break out our mechs.

We ended up doing a pickup game simple star VS star combat. a grudge match if you will, with our resident ghost bear player VS my hells horses.

Since we were also teaching 2 new players how to play the game i tried to include a good mix of units while not making it to overwhelming.

The bears brought the following mechs to the table.
    .night gyr(LRM boat)
    .gallahad (gauss)
    ,puma(prime)
    .battle cobra (prime)
    .bear cub

My side fo the table brought in -
    .gallahad(laser variant)
    .enyo strike tanks
    .crimson langur(prime)
    .stalking spider
    .ROC protomechs

We set up a somewhat diverse table with hills, light woods, an a couple rivers.

The game begam with the bears loosing initiative and charging forward.

With all of us mostly running in the medium range bot the initial pounding taken by the battle cobraa and bear cub wasn't enough to take them out of the game.

    at least not at first.

My new players did a pretty good job an manuevering requiring little coaching. the real funny thing about this game was the fact both the cobra and the gauss gallahad were forced to disengage without being destroyed. the cobra lost all of its weapons and i managed to go internal on the bears gallahad multiple times scoring hits on every single ammo bin it had on it.

The bears focused thier attention on my gallahd and my enyo strike tanks.
my gallahad took the brint of the fire actually getting cored out through the center. one tank was immobilised and the other was moderately damaged.

Return fire also blew out the spiders LFL actuator as well as scoring a gyro hit. he was walking for the rest of the game..

In the4 final counting the bears suffered badly. loosing 3 mechs from ending up weaponless and having the other 3 mechs destroyed.

To my loss of 1 actual mech .

I've got back into Battletech myself.
I was wondering what rules from which book do you use for your campaign? Total Warfare? Sword and Dragon? Tactical Operations?
Do you use climate rules etc?

Any reason you've not opted for canon schemes? Or at least uniform camo for the factions?

I must congratulate you on the GORGEOUS displays it must be tons of fun playing on those maps. I presume you're no fan of the hexes?

Wow, you guys have some fantastic gaming tables there! The desert one was my favourite, and I also loved seeing those epic space marine buildings, what a blast from the past!

    Well wher to start

.we use heavy metal pro software to print out our mech sheets with all the charts and tables printed on them, while we generally use the rules for total warfare with a few optional rules from tactical ops (ECM/ECCM ghost imaging, rapid fire machineguns to use up excessive ammo, and a couple others) we also use the old max tech level 3 rules for vehicle damage chart because the new rules (as per thier admission in tactical ops) specifically nuetered vehicles to the point that there was no reason to take them(4 total motive crit locations jumped to 14 ).

We occationally use climate rules( temperature, night, blowing wind gusts etc...) i mostly make my own up when i am the GM.

.We have something like 8 players and not everybody has thier mechs painted yet(or are to lazy to do so) several of us do use cannon schemes. all of my stuff is painted in either offical parade colors or field cammo. we also have situations where we choose mehcs to use that may be from different painted factions that we use together for a scenerio.

    Myself i play
    -Clan
.hells horse 9th galaxy-official paint scheme is flat black however they are misfits and paint thier mechs in garish schemes, flames, lightning etc...
    -Inner sphere
    .Lyran 10th gurad
a pretty standard scheme split white/blue with silver trim
    .2nd swords of light(combine)
    red/black/gunmetal
    .2nd deiron regulars
    black and green cammo.

I used to play on hexes years ago, but we switched to inch rules and never looked back. it gives us a much larger playing area and a much more fluid gameplay. it is very intuitive. you just need to make sure everybody is clear on what level each terrain piece is before you start. Also as you noticed it looks alot better to play on than a hex map.

    cheers!

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

    Update for 8/22/10

    Fisrt off-

    Blooding my new lance-

I recently added to my second deiron regulars force so i can get people to stop whining about my arrow IV's

In true deiron fashion i went with more medium wieght focus and jump capable mechs
    .akuma J
    .komodo 2
    .wolverine 8K
    .raijin c

I was battling an old foe-2nd robinson rangers.

    .TSM berserker
    .no-datchi 2KO
    .axeman 1N
    .Ti' T' sang

In true kurita fashion this was a no retreat no surrender game. i managed to keep him away for a few turns ther raijin managed to get behind the axeman and blow out his gyros effectively taking him out of the game as the battle moved away from him.

As usual the T'sang with it's incredible speed and hard hitting TSM enhanced axe was my bane. killing both the wolvorine and the raijin. the nodatchi scored a kill as well on the komodo. so i ended up with only the akuma on the table facing down the T'sang and berserker.......but something really fuinny happened. i could not loose the initiative for the rest of the game.

forcing the robinsons to move first and deny them physical combat. ...
additionally i kept hitting with the MRM 40 and LBX 20. slowly savaging the berserker and T'sang. since i was not ordered to surrender the field my akuma kept on fighting, the riobinsons eventualy just gave up and left since they could not pin me down and they were starting to get seriously mauled.

    The pics-

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

    Time for another instalment.

This time around we are on a moon. so we got to play in .5 gravity.

It was also apparently sunward facing so we also got a +5 heat bloom.

We were facing some hard hitting IS assault mechs
    Fafnir
    atlas
    sirroco
    .goliath

Unfortunately for them with was low gravity and all thier projectile weapons took penalties to hit.

This made thier elite pilots far less effective than they otherwise could be.

our side sported a point of battle armor,. a nova cat(ERLL), galahad(laser) and a stooping hawk.

I ended up getting pounded pretty bad when i played decoy but i managed to make it through with only minor heat sink damage(and alot less armor). My MVP moment in the game came when i put both large pulse shots into the face of the atlas...thats something you just do not walk away from.

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

A new clan campaigne has begun.

I decided this time around i will make my players work for it.

I chose clan ice hellion, zeta galaxy including thier special rules to add some level of difficulty to the gameplay. additionally i did not allow my players to choose thier own mechs instead giving them 6 randomly selected mechs by me assigned by lottery.

I specifically avoided mechs that had headcapping capabilities. the largest weapons (large lasers) being on the mechs with the least amount of armor.

I decided against giving them all trials of position as it would require me to run more than 3 maps and over 10 mechs. so assuming they already passt those trials we moved straight on to the next operation.

As ice hellion favors fast medium and light mechs for front line roles and thier practice of spliting up sibko's allowed me to toss theplayers into a battle with each other. the premis is that they are being bid as a star to engage clan blood spirit in a trial of possession. this was a trial of leadership to see who would command the battle against the spirits.

full zelbrigan was in effect for this game, the table was arctic desert(-5 heat) with blowing wind gusts.

Our happy little group of clanners were piloting
    .phantom D
    .puma E
    .mist linx/koshi C
    .hellion C
    .kit fox/uller S

As is the way with ice hellions the uller pilot gained the honor of drawing first blood. and at the same time forcing the koshi out fo the battle(he ripped off the arm the koshi had all his weapons in, forciung a withdraw)

The phantom was the odd man out and quickly sipatched the uller(after some amazingly bad rolls by the uller)

The puma knocked himself out multiple times and was declared non combatant. so the phantom and hellion dueled. the hellion proved victorious maintaining the honor of of the clan totem.

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

Game 2 of the ice hellion campaigne finds zeta galaxy on the blood spirits world of york, pit in a trial of possession against the equally fresh blood spirit omicron galaxy defenders of the 21st crimson guards.

We ended up being down our 5th star member as real world work issues came up.

Originally the guards bid 4 medium points and i probably shoud have dropped it to 3 before the game started.

Here is how it broke down.
the spirits never honor ZELL when you attack york(never permitted to in fact), so in true defensive stance the 21st took up a position in a ruined urban enclave. relying heavily on thier protomech forces.
To even theodds i too machingun heavy slayers and lightly armored ROC 3s as well asthe impressive demon ticks led by the commander in a crimson langur.

2 turns in the ticks had virtually dcapitated the koshi and so they were bid away from the fight as the 21st derided the incompetance of the hellion force.

The uller used it's superior speed and terrain to stave off most return fire but such tactics (and the ability of some fo teh star to not hit the same location more than once) saw the puma and the hellion both die to engine kills and the uller being given safecon to withdraw what remaining forces it could. the poor performance of the hellions ensured that the spirits had no interest in taking them as bondsman.

In the end the hellion star commander scored 3 kills, the uller scored 1 with the other 2 mechs in the star dying well before they did any significant damage(it didn't help that the puma pilot walking into a 3 sided kill box)

True to form the spirits were a formidable opponant and the zeta galaxy left york to lick it's wounds and seek to regain some honor in future bids.

Thumbs up Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

    3rd battle
    ice hellions campaign mission 3

objective, bid destroy or disable fire support vehicle star so that it may not be used against delta galaxy in thier bid VS the hells horse.

We were short oner player today so i ended up shrinking the size of the OP4 to just 3 points.

    X2 assshur artillery spotters
    X2 hachiman fire support tanks
    X2 morrigu (LRM variant.

of the hells horse zeta galaxy.

    The hellions brought-
    .uller
    .pouncer
    .phantom
    .lobo(proxied by a jenner)

The hellions were aware that the horse tanks were loaded with semi-guided LRMs so the uller pilot issued a personal challenge against the TAG spotter asshurs.

A very wise move considering how much damage the lance took without the benifit of the spotters.

The star commanders lobo got a lucky motive crit shot on one of the morrigu allowing them to ignore it in favor of the mobile targets.

The pahntom pilot got a bit to brave early on and charged right up to the morrigu tanks and got nearly crippled for his effort before he fell back .

a funny thing i notice when tanks are on the table. certain players seem to not be able to hit the same location more than once in a fire phase.

The uller could have killed one of the asshur's early on, even with a small laser, except he hit it in the undamaged turret.

Same went for the pouncer. unloading into the front of a heavily damaged hachiman only to strike side and turret armor that was mostly undamaged.

about half way across the table a lucky crit locked one of the hachimans turret's directly forward.

the armor that could attempted to clear the field but never made it. both sides were heavily savaged.

With the horse loosing one asshur, both hachimans and one morrigu with the other being disabled. voctory conditions were met for the hellions and they limped off the table with only the pouncer and lobo. both being helt together by tinsle wire and duct tape.
the uller pilot finally scored one kill and the star commander true to his skill scored the other 3 kills this battle.

    Now the pictures-

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

Our intrepid little speed demons are off on a bid to capture some oil fields.

The concept is very much a desert storm type setting, a very combustable environment with the added effects of terrain.

    in-play this game we had
.soft sand-at the start of movement a d6 roll of a 1 or 2 results in movement through soft sand-treat as water, walking only with standard pilot checks every 2"

.sump ponds-they look like water, they cool like water, until you hit them with a weapon, then there is a percentile chance at combustion. (don't stand in them with an overheating night gyr )

.volatile storage. again shooting around large fuel cells is not really the safest place to have a fight.

The objective for the hellions is pretty simple-negate defensive forces and do as little collateral damage as possible.

On the hellion side we had
    .lobo(proxy jenner)-star commander
    .hankyu-C
    .peregrine
    .cougar-E
    .puma-B

Our puma pilot was a stand in and he did amazingly well, scoring no less than 6 kills, far better performance than the guy who bailed out on us this game.

opposing them was 4 light base defense turrets with a large and medium pulse laser
    2 points of battle armor
and called in reinforcements consisting of-
    .Loki-C
    .piranha 2
    .cauldron born-B

It started out simple enough, with the exposed turrets in the center installation being taken down with ease, but still managing to score good hits on the hankyu.

Inside the high walls they faced BA who managed to bang up both the puma and the cougar. and errant shot from the right fields defense turret went wide of the peregrine who had jumped the wall, connecting insted with the pumping station. the ensuing explosion(it did manage to explode) took out both the turret and defending BA. with that installation neutralised they were about to shift to the last installation on the hill but their attention was drawn by the arrival of the loki and piranha.

They proceeded to pound the lightly armored loki reducing it to a single LBX 20 in the torso. and sheer off half the piranha, return fire crippled the hankyu and severely damaged the peregrine.

the next turn the cauldron born caught up to the battle. the cougar attempted to sneak in behind it but missed with most of it's shots thanks to the blowing smoke cause by the burning sump field ignited on the previous turn.

the cauldron born then back flipped it;s arms and blew both the cougars legs off, taking it out of the game.

In a bid to keep his star alive the Lobo offered a challenge of zellbrigan to the cauldron born.who gladly accepted the challenge.

The loki fell to the peregrine but not before severing it's leg and removing it from the fight, the piranha got dropped by the puma which in turn nearly died to battle armor, a lone surviving elemental reduced it to a single internal structure point in the center torso.

the zell battle was fast and brutal. the lobo got behind the cauldron born and hit hard, going alpha it paid off as the cauldron born took massive internal damage including 2 engine hits. hoping for a repeat of the last, the cauldron back flipped its arms and fired all barrels hitting the lobo with everything-2 ERPPCs and 2 large pulse. but he spread the damage around. the engine crits forced him into auto shutdown. 2 turns later he powered back up but was reduced to shooting a single gun to avoid dangerous heat buildup.

This time however he kept the lobo in front of him. it looked as if the lobo was going to get the worst of it. after he took the previous 50 points of damage, however true to form the lobo connected with a large laser to the cauldron borns head and added to the light damage he had done there the previous exchange he ripped the head clean off, killing the pilot instantly.

the star came out of it a bit mangled. the hankyu was engine killed, the cougar and peregrine both missing limbs and the puma and lobo both being operational but savaged.

They put up a good fight and earned the honor for trials to acquire new mechs ....we will see how they do with that next week.

Re: classic battletech campaign log-picture heavy

    A little 2 for 1 today.

The camplaign group was missing a few players and since we were only doing a trial for possesion so that members of the unit could challenge for larger more powerful mechs(via defeating them in personal combat). it wasn't a super eventful game and i forgot to take many pictures. as eachof the players pared off for single combat.

.The pergrine pilot won his trial against the nova
.the pouncer pilot won his trial against the black lanner.
.the cougar pilot got mauled by the ryoken and was randomly assigned a hoplight
the star commander then stepped in and challenged the ryoken with his lobo. which he promptly decapitated in 3 turns.

On a more interesting note i did a game prior to the campaign mission as a one off pickup game. pitting the hells horse 9th against the steel vypers

This was a big bruiser of a game with both sides rolling assault stars.
Even though i take a penalty as a HH player for not running infantry in my star i accepted the -1 to initiative and gave my opponant a full mech force.

    I ran
    .Couldron born B
.Thunder stallion 2(with semi guided TAG LRMs)
    .mascari/warhawk C
    .Hellstar E
    .supernova 2

    He ran
    .Battle cobra prime
    .Goshawk
    .Warhammer IIC
    .Madcat II
    .Daishi A

It started out as a pretty straight forward thing. the hellstar and warhawk went after the madcat, while the nova flanked right to intercept the goshawk/cobra trying to sneak around my right flank.

The cauldron borne and stallion moved up the left. the initial exchange favored the vypers who savaged the warhawk and grouped shot son the hellstars center torso.

The nexyt turn the daishi stepped onto the top of a small hill and exposed himself taking fire from both the hellstar and warhawk with some secondary fire from the stallion. the cauldron born and stallion however focussed on the warhammer. a good TAG hit with lasers and good missile rolls left it critically damaged.

The cobra and nove continiued to dance around each other.

Subsequent turns saw the warhawk die in the most unbique way yet. i was running hot and took 2 crits to the face. amazingly missing the pilot but destroying both his life support modules. immediately causing 6 pilot hits due to the heat.

Next to fall was the daishi followed quickly by the hellstar. the warhammer soaked more fire and 8 chances for criticals in the torsos , 4 in the center engine killed him. the cauldron born lost a leg and the pilot knocked hjimself out.

The supernova finally finished off the battle cobra after removing both it's arms.

Leaving my opponant with a madcat II and goshawk to face down a thunderstallion and supernova.

A turn later with an ammo explosion plus failed pilot roll for the madcat left only the goshawk in the fight. which promptly surrendered the field.

The thunder stallion never got scratched the entire game.
