Can Blood Bowl be taken seriously?

I don't mean from a selling point of view, I mean is it possible that orcs, dwarfs, lizardmen, minotaurs, etc lining up on the pitch to throw down with a hybrid rugby/football game necessarily ridiculous in its entirety?

I always thought the idea would be somewhat interesting that somehow, Gork and Mork, the gods of chaos, Sigmar, etc came to the conclusion that they could gain more power/influence with a contest of might instead of conquest. In other words, say that people observing the dominance of a team representing a greater power might actually become converted to their cause more effectively than if they were forced into obeisance by the sword.

I don't mean to suggest something as patentedly ridiculous as Gork and Mork receiving some kind of inspiration, but maybe because of the current (to the BB timeline) environment they are forced to adapt to the times and receive their gratification according to this new sacred rite. Even the gods of chaos might have little choice as their followers might be quite taken by the idea (or more likely, these entities may see this as a better opportunity).

Is my idea completely whack, and I should just accept Blood Bowl as silly and irreverent, or am I potentially on to something?

Well you could take it seriously, there'd be nothing stopping you. But it would be against the grain and completely implausible (a follower of Khorne, for instance, is not going to go "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD G... oooh, ball!" and forget his entire philosophy, Homer Simpson-like. Presented witha field full of barely-armed warriors he should be reaching for his sword, not strapping on the same barely-armed outfit and joining in). So you're not likely to get the most out of it. It's easier to turn serious stuff into comedy than vice versa. Blood Bowl is silly and irreverent not because the writing and the details are silly, but because the entire concept is silly. That's what you'd battling against.

That said, if you can make it work, go for it - and tell me how when you've done it.

BB's not in the WHFB universe, for a start. It's a similar but distinct universe where the gods, despite still being the same things, have a sense of humour.

And if you think that the rivalry between Sigmar and, say, Khorne is bad you've never seen a Spurs-Arsenal game.

People have tried to do this in the past - it's almost painful to read and you can't help thinking that the point has been well and truly missed.

I do have to ask. Why do you would want to do this?

Touchy subject? Nah... Though, one thing you get wrong. The game of bloodbowl is a reverance towards the god Nuffle, from the far away land of Amorica where they played the game, before some orc sat down on a temple that seemed to be a 'library' with rulings and stuff like that. Short to say: Sigmar, Gork, Mork, the Horned Rat, etc. don't have one iota to do with the making of the game.
At the time the people of the Old World found out about the game, they found this a much better wasting of time then continuous fighting one another and as such, it took over the concept of constant warfare. So basically, bloodbowl rules all! ^_^

If you surf through the specialist games site, then try to find the PBBLv1.11 rulebook. In the end of that PDF-file, you have a serious amount of background concerning bloodbowl.

As far as taking it 'serious', I have one subject that counters it all: ogre kingdoms... (If you take THAT serious, bloodbowl would be much easier to get). It's a game and if you don't like it, you don't like it.

Oh I get the irreverence of it, believe me. It's just that in some leagues some people try things that go beyond my capability of seeing exist even in a crazy fantasy world of Blood Bowl (like tyranid teams). Long ago I got the distinct impression that this game was supposed to be totally off the mark, like a Far Side cartoon or something, but the idea came to me that perhaps a semi serious background could be applied.

Hey man, if the commissioners of their league approves the actual use of 'tyranid teams', I really can't speak for them. Though in such circumstances, I'd understand your stance.

But do understand, the majority of the bloodbowl community is a very serious group in this. Just check www.bloodbowl.net (the NAF-site) to see how very well played the game is.

There's more than one way to miss the point, and Tyranid Blood Bowl teams are a big fat way of doing just that. The joke of Blood Bowl is the entire concept of these nations and races from a serious setting that hate each other's guts playing football. Add in Tyranids, and goodbye goes the joke, because you're immediately conceding that the thing isn't at all serious - it depends for its humour on pretending that it is.

Irreverent doesn't mean anything goes. Comedy has frameworks like any other genre, and going outside of the setting's little world disrupts the image, and therefore the humour and atmosphere. And if it looks like I'm taking this topic too seriously: damn straight I am. Comedy is a serious business.

I chalk it up to Blood Bowl madness, which affects everyone at some point.

I always thought that Blood Bowl matches were just a good precursor to the next fantacy battle game. How many riots have broken out at the end of a football game or soccer (european football) match? I always think about two players in a WFB game yelling, "Your team cheated! That's the only way they won!" or You must have bribed the refs!"

Unfortunatly I have not seen this yet. Still waiting.

note to self: Need to get a BB team and WFB army of the same race, similar paint sceam to try this out.
