    The bearded one's Scurrying Skaven

Hi all. I recently started Skaven. I liked them a long time and their fluff is amazing, but I was preoccupied with my dwarfs. I wasn't really interested in buying the box when it came out. I mean.. spending money and being burdened with being the owner of my 2 arch enemies?!

But 2 people asked me if I wanted to buy a box with them, and give the high elves to them, skaven to me. When ordered on maelstrom that's 60 euro's for 80 clanrats, 4 ratogres, heroes and weaponteams. A fair deal I'd say.

Another skaven player around here asked if he could have 1 of my poisoned wind mortars. It's not my favourite weaponteam so I don't mind parting with one. In return I can get about 10 clanrats and some bitz.

I do not have a specific list in mind. It's mostly for friendly use, though if I can finish enough rats I will use 750 pts at a doubles tourney somewhere in januari/februari, one of the bigger GW organised tourneys here in Holland and I've been there the last 2 years. Last year with my lizardmen and my chaos warrior allies we came in 4th of about 30 teams. Not bad for my first fantasy tourney We even massacred some daemons.

    I was thinking something like this;

    30 clanrats with spears
    warpfire thrower

    30 clanrats with spears
    poisoned wind mortar

    30 clanrats
    warpfire thrower

    6 rat ogres
possibly taking out 1 of those rat ogres and putting a warlord on rat ogre bonebreaker in it with the blade of corruption, world's edge armour and "the other trickster's shard" ( forces enemies in base contact to reroll wardsaves )

    chieftain: BSB
    Lvl 2 warlock, doomrocket

    And possibly in the future:
    - warplightning cannon
    - poisoned wind globadiers
    - 20 stormvermin and a warlord on warlitter
    - Hell pit abomination

My general idea is a warlord clan that manages to play Clan skyre and Moulder out against eachother and benefits from support from both those clans trying to outdo eachother. I wanted to avoid the typical furnace/bell bunkers, no grey seer, no doomwheel, no pestilens, and no eshin apart from possibly a couple of gutter runners.

Enough babbling, pictures! I got 1 clanrat from a GW staffmember as thanks for helping him finish painting all their IoB clanrats, so I could test my own colourschemes.

My first 2 packmasters. These I painted after the clanrat to see how it looked on different models and some colour variations.

My first rat ogre. I sculpted some extra bandages ( easiest thing to sculpt in the world ) . I like the typically Skaven amputation and blood seeping through the bandages. Expect a lot more bandages on my other rat ogres. That will also help differentiate the duplicate IoB rat ogres I will have.

A limit of 6 images per post? Well, that's a bummer. Hail the doubleposts!

    C&C welcome. Mostly C

Re: The bearded one's Scurrying Skaven

I assembled my second rat ogre. The flames are from one of the corpse cart torches ( one broke off. Why glue it back on if it'd snap off again at the first kind of contact , there are better things to use it for ). I sculpted some bandages on it. I'm not totally happy with the sculpting, but I think I can make it look good with painting.

Nice stuff, I like the green. Was thinking of a similar scheme myself actually!

A great start! Your painting is really good, especially the metallics! The only little thing that's nagging me is that the Warpstone and the robes are the same colour. The green looks really good, don't get me wrong, but a slightly different shade between the two would look a little better, IMHO. But that's just a minor criticism. Like I said, these are great! I want to see where this is going.

    Cheers,

Re: The bearded one's Scurrying Skaven

I agree with monsterzork, the warpy bitz should, as he already pointed out, carry a different shade of green than that of the robes. I'd suggest that you start the warpstone from black and then highlight up to white only painting the sharp edges. this would give the impression of a very hard and glossy material, which would suit warpstone pretty well.

Everything else is looking quite splendid, think you can manage the whole army to the same standard?
If you liked my comment, please return the favor and comment on something I've made!
How about checking out this random cavalcade?

Re: The bearded one's Scurrying Skaven

    Valid criticism

My green is snot green, a big badab black + thraka green wash, and then highlights of snot green to scorpion green. I think the warpstone chunks can use another black wash.
So far it has been relatively easy to do it this standard, as every thing is washed and then has some highlights. The skin, the metal, the robes, everything. I should be getting IoB here within a week, so then the clanrat frenzy can start! I will need about 40 - 50 in Januari, and 6 rat ogres, and I am a notoriously slow painter ( usually ) , so we will see how this goes

Thanks for the comments. I am going to spray the second rat ogre now.

Re: The bearded one's Scurrying Skaven

They look good with green robes. I agree with other posters about the warpstone though, it should be a different shade of green. Other than that you've made a good start and I'm looking forward to seeing more although after just buying a skaven batallion and having to work through 2 sets of IoB rats, I think I'll be lucky if I have any free time!!!

with 2 Island of blood boxes and some minor additions I am already getting up to 1500 pts. Have you picked up one too? We will see how my HPA will smash your doomwheel! ( or vice versa )

Excellent Skaven! Good luck maintaining that level of quality with so many models needed. I know I would lose my mind if I tried that. Keep up the great work!

I almost finished rat ogre #2, I think it turned out really well so far. Can you spot which bandages I sculpted on?

Mad. You are mad. Painting an army of skavens to that standard! But if you manage to finish it with your health and sanity intact i will be quite impressed!

Very nice job so far, keep rocking!

    quiet-shush!

I painted almost 120 dwarfs at such a standard, I will have to continue on with 90 Skaven clanrats

Re: The bearded one's Scurrying Skaven

2 days without posting and already the thread ended up at the very bottom of page 2

I've been busy the past 2 days so didn't have all the time to paint, but here they are, the first 5 clanrats.

I think I'll paint 10 clanats and each time "reward" myself by painting a rat ogre, character or weaponteam.
