    Aliens in RL

IF aliens made contact with our world (in the UN, on live TV saying "Hi we want to be friends") how many of us would still keep playing Warhammer 40k because they like the game?

    Re: Aliens in RL

No one plays 40k because they like the game.... we just play to bitch about the rules and getting ripped off about GW. is the actual question "if aliens landed and wanted to be friends, would people start liking 40k?" the answer would still be no.

So... the OP is suggesting we only play 40k as a way to express some deep xenophobia?
I've never played with human army- maybe I should try to join these aliens and start a war against the humans I clearly hate?
Orcs and Goblins, Wood Elves, Necrons, Tyranids

short of aliens coming to earth, handing me the keys to one of there spaceships and saying you are now god of your world, nothing would change.

on that note, I am in fact hoping that the above comes to fruition. In fact, it represents my retirement plans.

I see the confusion, my point is that now that aliens are real, whats the point of playing a game that features aliens? Scifi just becomes fiction.

    Re: Aliens in RL

So no one plays with model humans?

We are arguing. On the internet. About a fantasy. Wargame. There's absolutely no way we are not nerds, and no reason whatsoever to try to make some sort of hierarchy.

Um, if Tyranids and Orks came to our worlds, I think all of us would stop playing 40k pretty soon.

But otherwise, people play historical wargames a lot too, so meh...

Sci-fi is short for science fiction - that is; made up stories about technology's impact on life as we know it, as it opens up new perspectives and possibilities. And also the birthplace of many radical ideas, such as the communication satelite, the internet and other crazy stuff.

So first, your statement 'fiction becomes fiction' is gibberish.

Next 40K stories has nothing to do with science fiction. It is space opera fantasy pulp literature just as Star Wars and Harry Potter. Noone cares for the science of 40K, its the supermen and chicks with guns and big-ass explosions and tanks people go for.

So your question is akin to asking whether people would stop readin' Harry Potter if aliens arrived, and the answer would is: "No, people will stop playing 40K, the day the entire human race wakes and decides that porn is a waste of time, and enroll in philosophy classes around the globe - incidentally that will be the same day, when god finally gives up on his creation and decides to start all over with a clean slate

People still read and enjoy many old sci-fi books, even though they are outdated and unrealistic. War of the worlds for an is a great book.... but we now know that aliens did not invade earth during the late 19th century.

Wouldn't your statement be more proper if it was "Would people stop reading Harry Potter if it was proved conclusively that magic was real ala Dungeons and Dragons (as there are people that believe magic is real already)?"

I think the discussion in both cases might turn more on the comparisons of what the speculative people got right or wrong. "Hey, those aliens are just like [insert appropriate author's name]'s aliens!" Personally I find it highly incredulous that "actual aliens" would end up being like anything found in 40K...is part of the question the concern for what said aliens would think of us for playing this type of game? If so, wouldn't this be an indictment against the whole entertainment industry since much of our "Science Fiction" is still very much humanocentric. But since that's all we really know, can we really be blamed?

    Re: Aliens in RL

Do you mean if aliens turned up and they were 40k players would I continue to play against them, the alien players? Sure I would, I am not prejudice against any semi sentient non-terrestrial organic lifeform, just so long as they dont play more ***** Space Marines!
GM:"You awake to a beautiful morning, the forest is peaceful as a zephyr whistles through the tree branches"
Bob:"A Whistling Zephyr? I waste it with my crossbow...ha I rolled a critical hit...28 points of damage, is it dead?"
GM:"What? of course not you *****, it just carries on whistling thru the trees"
Sara:"Guys relax a zephyr is just a breeze"
Bob:"Breeze my ass, it just took 28 hit points and it's still whistling at me!"

my point is that now that aliens are real
It's interesting that this implies that aliens aren't real until we see them/know of their existence.

But away from that, no matter who's on Earth, my Eldar are still going to smash some Space Wolves into the ground.

Did people stop watching Star Trek as soon as we got automatic sliding doors and cellphones?

    Re: Aliens in RL

I think if Aliens came here one of two things would happen. We'd decide they're too different of have something we want and try to kill them, getting anhillated as a result or the Alients would decide that we're to different or we have something they want and anhillate us.

After all if you're gonna go to the effort of crossing space and time, you want something out of it. Getting what you want usually involves violence at some level. So no, there will be no one playing 40k, or anthing else for that matter.
