Would there be such things as good wargs?
hey all i was just curious as to wether there would be good wargs in middle earth. There basically super intellegent wolves so would there be good aligned wargs. Or say if you got one when it was very young and it only knew the world of men would it stay loyal to its master, or would its cruel nature take over and kill you when it saw the chance. just curious is all. thanks in advance.

Re: Would there be such things as good wargs?
I think wargs in particular are pretty definitively an evil race, because they were corrupted by Melkor (or Sauron, not 100% certain). So in the same way that there really can't good orcs, there can't be good wargs.
I suppose wolves could fall in the neutral zone, although even they seem to more often be associated with evil.

Re: Would there be such things as good wargs?
They're all descended from werewolves, which are unequivocally an evil spirit creature in LotR. Moreover, as you mentioned they are intelligent, they don't have masters who own or tame them, they're actively conspiring with the Orcs. They allow other creatures to ride them becase it serves their own twisted goals. Wolves have always been associated with evil in Arda, since Morgoth showed his face and fouled things up.
However redemption is a theme of Tolkien's works, so it might be possible to have a redeemed, though not necessarily good warg. It would probably have to be along Gollum lines, allowing for a later betrayal or turn of face, or ultimately a death that served a larger purpose in the grand scheme. Alternatively you could work with a large hound creature. Hounds have always been companions of Men and Elves, and some have achieved greatness such as Huan.

the earlier wargs weren't super intelligent wolves, but rather evil spirits that took wolf form after nightfall. i'm not sure if later wargs built on this same theme but its pretty clear that they're innately evil creatures from the beginning.

Re: Would there be such things as good wargs?
I agree that there's no sign of 'good' in Wargs in any of Tolkien's work, same as you would not find an orc or a Troll with the free peoples.
I would expect that wolves, though like Craban and rats get used by the enemy, could also be aligned with the free peoples, but would take the same attitude as the giant Eagles did. Though they were clearly against the forces of Morgoth/Sauron, the only reason they helped the heroes was essentially Radagast's already established relationship with them. That's what I would expect from 'free' wolves.

No
You can have normal mundane wolves but no good Wargs.
