    Munnchy's GD Diorama 2011

    Hi all,

Edit - See below as original plan has changed due to time restrictions!

Be sure to check out Guilliman's diorama log too, sterling work there. I am watching it mysef with interest!

Well I have started work on my diorama, albeit slowly.

I'm not going to give away much in the way of information, rather let people see the photos as it progresses as there are elements to the diorama which are intended to be secret - right up to the display cabinets at GD.

Yes, I know what you are thinking. And no, I did not vomit into a box. This is not a Nurgle entry.

More pics as work progresses. I warn you now, it will be slow as I am in the process of moving house. However, my new place will have a whole half a room dedicated to painting and modelling. Huzzah!

    Re: Munnchy's GD Diorama 2011

    Hi all,

    I have a dilemma!

I have just moved house, and have been super super busy all of this summer with various things which have kept me from working on my diorama.

I have big plans for this one, and I think it could be really sucessful, but I don't want to have to rush it. The bulk of the complex painting would be on the 10 or so guardsmen involved, with the scenery being fairly straightforward.

Do I continue with this project, or do I return to last year's entry and work on that to bring the painting up to the required level instead, and resubmit it this year?

I'd say improve the painting on your old diorama. I'm pretty stressed about my own diorama and that's only three guardsmen. I'd really love to see the one you've been planning to do, but I wouldn't think I'd make it in time if I were you. It would be a real waste if you rushed something you know you could do much better.

+1 to the above. It'd be a shame to rush a good idea!

    Hi all,

Due to an extremely busy summer as discussed above, I will be re-entering this year with my photo diorama.

Would everybody be so kind as to view the thread from last year and suggest areas that I can improve this ready for this years entry?

    Cadian Photo Diorama

So far I am planning on adding more layering to the khaki parts of the uniform, and a bit more work on the skin as well to add depth.

That's pretty much what I was going to suggest. How about some battledamage and weathering, especially to the armour? And some more details to the ground; if that's the trench they've been fighting in I imagine there are a lot more stuff lying around. Even if they've cleaned the area of corpses there should at least be some blood on the ground.

I would suggest using a Gryphonne Sepia wash over the fatigues to blend down your base colour so that the transition between the shading and your base colour is a bit smoother.

Then reapply the khaki again, making sure to keep your paint very thin to make smooth transitions.

I would then suggest mixing in bleached bone to do at least one more level of highlighting on there to make them pop.

I would also suggest another highlight on the body armour too as right now it looks a bit flat.

I think the skin itself just needs another level of highlighting on the nose, cheeks and foreheads (where light would hit it). This will not only add light but also depth as it will make your shading darker.

I also think some of the eyes could do with being touched up. Some of them just need narrowing, but others could do with a repaint.

I hope that doesn't sound over critical, it isn't intended to be, it's just that at the moment the figures look about 80-90% finished if they are for Golden Daemon.

I have to say though that the diorama itself is superb!

    I agree Straightsilver,

To be honest they are about 80-90% finished, so my aim is to bring them up to 100%.

I think I may need to do a little work on the base to make the grass/mud a bit more realistic. Maybe some blood spatters, lasgun scorch marks and bullet casings.

Perhaps another 'nid corpse or two? Or a few guardsman policing up the bodies of fallen comrades?

Obviously you don't want to clutter the base, but making it look like a battle has occurred would probably be a good step.

Maybe, immediately behind the photographer you make the ground all ground up and destroyed with some corpses to represent the duality of the imperium trying to make joining the IG less trumatic

Munchy, this is an excellent little vingette full of character and firmly placed in a believable slice of Imperial Guard life. I'll leave other, more qualified people to talk about how to get to where you're going with it but from this pleb's view, it's magnificent. Good work fella.
