Super Dungeon Explore - cute as can be

What a brilliant game! Hails back to the days of the nintendo style and gauntlet hack n slash dungeon crawl sort of video games

At first glance you may think a pretty shallow cutesy basic dungeon crawl game but once you work out the interaction between heroes and minions the tactical options open right up. played our first game last Tuesday and thoroughly enjoyed it, will be playing a 'super' game this coming Tuesday!

Oh and let's not forget those fantastic cartoony miniatures and huuuuuuge scope for expansion sets! google the game there are plenty of ref pics of the assembled minis about

Anyhow, made a start the other day, figured I would start with the spawn points and for some reason 'Angry bear' to get my hand in and work out how I was gonna approach these things, nice n bold me reckons

This is how it comes, prepare for some down time before you can play/paint, each one of those FIFTY TWO miniatures arrived in approx 5 parts, pretty straight forward to assemble to be honest but your gonna have to use superglue, no liquid poly here I'm afraid!

Here are the 5 spawn points in the base game, Kobold and Denizen. Also Angry Bear, he actually the Druid shapeshifter character in his animal form!

Hoping for some nice weather next week so I can get stuck into the rest!

An example of the spawn point cards, they tell you what you as consul (a play on console me thinks!) start the game with, while you can spawn any creatures from any spawn point (up to the skull limit) once all types of any particular spawn point is destroyed you cannot spawn any of those creature types!
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...sandspawn1.jpg

You also get a selection of treasure chests
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...sandspawn2.jpg

Be careful though because some bite back!!!
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...sandspawn3.jpg

An example of a creature/hero card, everything required for game play is on the card as well as a neat little back story, the items you find neatly tuck into one of the sides of the card that matches the jewel on hero cards (generally magic, armour weapon, etc)
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ungeoncard.jpg

Check out all those different possible conditions! As I said, at first glance looks a fun little game but for is lots of scope for a deeper game as long as the custard creams and jaffa cakes don't run out!
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ndeffects2.jpg

Finally here is the map provided in the manual, very Nintendo! As you can see lots of room for expansions, this box set currently takes place at number two, starfire mountain

This game has been getting a fair amount of buzz here and around the net, you've got some very nicely painted heroes though! Lookin good so far, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your set painted.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

Wow thats fantastic painting! Great work, very inspirational.

Did you have any problems assembling any of the models? My Hexcast sorceress seems to have a bit of a miscast in the arm joint, the arm won't fit at all.

Lots of fun to play and can be quite tactical when you look at how the characters and minions can interact with each other, really looking forward to any expansions! Planning on having a 'super' game this Tuesday

Only miniature that springs to mind stuart was the barbarian on which the arms wouldnt connect correctly, just filled the gap with pva, didnt even trim the flash from the figures, they are pretty clean and I am just a lazy painter!

Apart from that a few bent spears on the gougers which I took care of with a little warm water

Anyhow, few more of the little guys finished

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...reExplore1.jpg

Flingers have a ranged attack and a natty smoke bomb option
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...reExplore2.jpg

Ironscales are the elite of your foot troops and as well as dishing out the hurt can provide an effective defense for the rest of your minions!
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...reExplore9.jpg

Hatchlings, new born drakes 'ahhh bless look at his cute little eyes, aaaaaaargh nooooo not the face. NOT THE FA..............'
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...eExplore12.jpg

Whelps are a little more independent and can be tough opponents when used alongside your other minions abilities
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...eExplore11.jpg

Wyrmlings are a little more developed and have started sprouting wings, if they survive those nasty death dealing heroes they will eventually grow up to be big daddy drakes!

Why not come up with your own? I had loads of fun doing up my kobolds and dragons as blue instead of red!

The traditional chromatic colors are white, black, red, blue, and green. Seems like a good variety of colors, no?

Wonderful work, thats a really nice price for the amount of quality minis and game items.
Are they done by air brush?

Brilliant paintjob! Did you do the metal parts with metal colours or NMM? It's really hard to tell from the pictures...

Re: Super Dungeon Explore - cute as can be

Honestly I have tried to do tuts before and I just can't get my head round stopping to take pictures once I start a mini its go go go all the way to the end!
Not a great believer anyhow I much prefer the experiment and experience route, you only need to know the basics of how to handle a brush and the rest is down to experience, think I have the first ever figure I painted somewhere (on old DnD model) I will dig it out one day and show you how time improves any skill!

I use a relatively small collection of colours and hardly ever mix as it just saves time to do it that way with my style, I had never picked up an airbrush before I bought mine and just dived straight in and winged it, it is much more fun that way and it really isn't that difficult and I only use basic techniques to lay down prime colours, I finish most of the miniatures with brush blending

Saying that I will try and force a tut out on these, however it will have to be when the expansions are released because as we speak the varnish on the boss figures is drying so I am all out of unpainted SDE figures!

Nefelenwen, all metallics mate simply matt varnished when done.

    Anyhoo

    Rest of the grunts finished!

Dragon Priests, lots of buffing type powers
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...tSDEminis8.jpg

Gougers, great to attack from behind your tougher troops as they have extra reach with those spears

    Knuckleheads, good all rounders
