Andy T's WHQ Dungeon

Hi guys, I've been inspired by a couple of threads on here so thought I'd have a go at a dungeon myself. Just to warn you that it's not going to be as impressive as Feral's or Daemonslave's (which are amazing!) but hopefully still a decent standard (with your help). Pictures at the moment are going to be done using my iphone and Warseer upload untill I figure out how to use photo bucket or whatever you guys use.

It's based on an old 'Deathblow' magazine article. I'm using cork tiles and hardboard (laser cut in the D.T dept at work ). I prime them with cheap black paint mixed with PVA before a quick spray and base coat of Adeptus Battle Grey. Codex Grey dry brush and some glazes (thanks Feral for the suggestion) think probs devlan mud?

Looking very nice indeed. It's good to see so many people still play WHQ.
Could I be cheeky and ask if you would be willing to sell me some of those laser cut sections?

I've used them all sorry! had to bribe the technician at work with biscuits to get them done too. You'd be surprised how many schools have a laser cutter though, i'm sure if you offered to make a donation to the local school's D.T dept and took your own hardboard in (I got mine off the back of an old wardrobe) they would help...

Very cool, they certainly show up aged and ancient. I was thinking that was an sfx of Feral's but it seems to be a nice result of using cork. Lucky sods the both of you

Minotaur looks intimidating as ever, I suspect I had best buy a few for my heroes to meet. I have only the classic plastic models.

Talking models, the forest goblin spiders are superbly creepy.. think I might switch out to use those instead!

A good looking start. Planning on adding some nice coloured highlights to differentiate the dungeon rooms? It looks cool...

What barbarian model is that? I struggled to find a good one, and yours looks great. Kamenya may want to know as well.

Ah cool, you are off to a great start!

The tiles themselves look good, but a splash of browns and greens here and there would make the world of difference I reckon. Makes the stonework look more realistic. I would also add a few details here and there, things like skull, chains, old rags etc..

Your miniature painting is mighty fine, I like the Elf in particular!

The Barbarian is a Reaper Mini I've converted (originally had a 2 handed axe) Here's a pic of some paintin from last night.....


Going to raid my bits box for details like skeletons, weapons etc and maybe some banner tops to hang on the doors?

In terms of painting whats the best way of adding hints of brown and geen? Was thinking of liberal application of Devlan Mud? Or should I be more adventurous?

Reaper? Of course, Tre did three or four pieces for them last year (he's also the sculptor behind Red Box Games). Either way, cool Barbarian

Hints of brown? Devlan wash watered down some. I find Thraka Green wash overpowering.. depends what you are greening up though? I'm for muted tones, because it makes key characters stand out more when you put them among their minions

If you mean the scenery.. well, check out Feral's thread; he has some good ideas.. but also I posted some examples of a mossy/vine laden dungeon; it would be good reference for dressing up your dungeon when you begin to detail.

Foundation paints are your friend here, most of the various greens and browns (Gretchin Green in particular) heavily watered down and applied into gaps and crevasses give you this great patchy look when dried.

One other way to do browns and greys is to first paint the tiles in a colour that represents the main tone you want and when dry then paint it over with a water based varnish/clear. Once this has dried you can then use liquid shoe polish (Kiwi brand) over the whole piece. The Shoe polish is great as it is thick and takes a while to dry. Just use tissue or paper towel to wipe off the shoe polish where you don't think necessary.

I find that general washes such as GW are way to watery and can dry to quick before you get the right amount where you need it. A good link about this process is at Hirst Arts : http://www.hirstarts.com/video/antiquing2.wmv

Had a go at some glazes........ too subtle?
I applied it in patches, but should I have just slapped it on all over?

For a plain stone corridor, I think that looks great! I'd personally wanna see more colour/detail on your dungeon rooms tho

Really like the corridor. The stains are quite subtle but that just makes it look better.

Definitely makes a difference, and for the better. Its a good way to start.. subtle then work up to the odd bold detail. I know the original Whqst tiles had the odd blood stain, beer spill etc.

Either way, your set, but this is a great improvement over straightforward stone work

The extra details really work well. Blended in just so as well. Don't let a Dwarf see the cracked kegger - should be an instant beserk roll in anguish.

I think the daylight overexposed the details a little; but what is visible really adds to your original corridors and rooms.

The blood splatters and the subtle glazes add loads of character to your tiles.

Such a cool idea to use that "mantrap", it is an Ogre Kingdom bit yes? I imagine it would be easy enough to mount a couple of spare ones onto a separate tile to make an unique yet brutal "trap counter"!
