    Space Hulk Gameplay

    Hi all,

Hopefully by starting this thread we can relight these forums.....

So early days but how's everyone finding the latest edition....

    Is it new for some...

Have you just dusted off your old edition...

Or just the same old same old...you have continually played this game...

I am a big fan of this game, having had numerous amount of copies on the first release....

I then had a big lull in gaming, only just getting back into it about a year ago.

To see this game finally get released was amazing, I don't get my copy till next week but having played a few games a few weeks ago the memories, fun etc etc soon came flooding back...

Well hope to speak/discuss to fellow Space Hulk gamers......

    Happy Hunting !!!

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

I love it when the stealers make that 'squish' noise when they eat my power fists... I'm actually VERY excited about the digital supplements for DA and SW. I used my own Deathwing and got a few boxes of SW terminators that I substituted with the same weaponry as the BA. I'm interested to see the new weapons and how they fit into the game.

As far as gaming. I have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Editions, several copies of each and all expansions. I am going to break down and buy this set too for the new rules and new board pieces. I'll probably wind up selling the terminators, counters, some extras and possibly the broodlord too. If anyone is interested, I'll be ebaying these bits cheap (as I'm not into gouging on prices).

I even have the Citadel Journal rules for using imperial guard in hulks. The ice warriors of Valhalla were my chosen minis as the heavy coats in the 'cold and dark' hulks seemed appropriate. Now-a-days I have the urge to use the Militarum Tempestus Scions.

I don't have the latest edition yet, but I'm optimistic about the new rules. From what I understand there is an open-to-space room, not sure what the turbo lift is and the boarding topedoes sound awesome!

    We'll wait and see.

Yes there is life starting to come back in the space hulk forums....

Hopefully everyone's getting some great games in !!

I am hoping that we get more time given towards this game. There's a massive interest out there or they wouldn't have sold all those copies, especially a second time round.....

Hopefully a book containing rules for various other species/chapters = Space marines, Tyranids etc.
Not forgetting specialist rules for characters, a various weapon systems etc
    More scenarios...

I wasn't a fan of psychic powers in the 1st edition probably as I never really learnt the rules...I was happy keeping it straight toward how the game played...

Anyone else think of anything they would like to see ?

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

I think that anyone expecting more than has been released is destined for disappointment. I'd like updated versions of the board sections from Deathwing, Genestealer and the various White Dwarf articles, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not a fan of adding more and more units to the game, especially on the Genestealer side. It interferes with the core concept of the game in my opinion. More scenarios, even if that's just reprints from Space Hulk Campaigns, on the other hand ...

Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing a return of the solo rules from Deathwing, or rules for multiple Marine players (either head-to-head using Imperial and Traitor Terminators or multiple Marine players vs the Genestealer player).

I reckon that would be any tactitions dream come true to have Terminator vs Terminator / bolter vs bolter on a game like this....

You would have to be planning your move several moves ahead. The intensity would be amazing....

The rules for that are there already (albeit for 1st edition). It makes it a totally different game, though, which may or may not be to everyone's taste.

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

I had my first game on Sat took a couple of hours we played first mission I had read through the rules but my mate hadn't so we didn't use timer and kept referring to rules it ended in a draw I thought I'd won as I'd killed all genestealers and he had run out of blips but alas he had killed enough of my terminators to make it a draw.

Really great game I used to have Tyranid attack years ago and that seemed quite a bit different game from what I can remember alas my parents flogged all my toys and games years ago after I had moved to London they did ask me if I wanted all that stuff but being a 20 year old enjoying partying I never thought I'd be back into this hobby what a fool I was.

I can see us playing this more than 40k for a while just cause it's quicker to set up and play. Me and the wife have a little 8 month old nurgling which takes up a lot of time these days.

Thought I may as we'll mention my second and third game which was last night we played mission 2 suicide mission this time my friend played as terminators again we didn't use the timer. I didn't realise I got 2 blips and 2 reinforcement blips on first turn so I just started with 2.
It was a slow game there was a mental moment where I flung about 7 genestealers at his sergeant who was at a junction I kept making him turn but he cut them all down some really lucky rolling on his part and unlucky on mine. Then I kept getting blips with ones so he steadily progressed to the control room and won.
Next I played as Termis and we realised the error with blips at beginning so he had 4 it was a massacre and I lost on turn 4 it was my own fault my Nurgling had woke up and I was having to rock him off to sleep in push chair so my mind wasn't quite on the game I moved too far forward and left my flamer exposed although he was on guard it made no difference just for fun he finished his turn and slaughtered 3 more Termis including the sergeant.
Love the game but I need to get better tactically a lot better.

Unfortunately I live in West Yorkshire as it's always good to find someone else to play against.

I was completely shocked when my mrs asked to have a game last and she enjoyed it she wants to play again tonight. She played as marines so going to have ago with the stealers tonight. Suicide mission again I'll have played that 4 times this week. I think I'll start using timer now when I'm marines.

It's a lot easier to learn than 40k I'm surprised it says 12+ on box. Isn't 40k aimed at 10+ I think I was 9 or 10 when I first played blood bowl which led to other GW games.

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

I downloaded the Deathwing iBook expansion and played the 3 mission mini campaign, as the Deathwing... I'm quite impressed with the game play; especially the missions that come in the download. The boarding torpedoes add a great element and a bit of unpredictability. I also like the customized missions and points allotment for selecting marines; I always liked creating my own missions but never really knew how to select the terminators compared to reinforcement blips without an unbalance. I'm looking to play the mini campaign again but selecting my marines armament differently... I'm hoping I don't get slaughtered...

Once you've got a handle on the missions, the Deathwing expansion for first edition introduced a bidding system to see who plays the Marines; each player writes down in secret the number of points they're willing to use in a mission. The lowest bidder plays the Marines.

Yes that was fun... Also had option of using regular marines for the really hard challenge!

Bidding would be even better now as the marines have had a lot of buffs since then making it a lot easier for them, so a greater range of downgrades possible! (For example suicide mission I reckon I can do with 1 sarge, 2 normal and 1 flamer now.)

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

The Space Hulk Dark Angels iBook has a points system in the rules. It allows you to customize your team how you like it. But, the more points you use in the mission the more blips the genestealers get for re-inforcements. So, for example a Sgt with power sword and storm bolter could cost you 15 points, an assault cannon could cost 13, lightning claws could cost you 14, a champion with caliban halberd could cost you 17 and a librarian could cost you 20... You total your points; 15+13+14+17+20=79. Compare that number to the genestealers table and 79 points may mean that the stealers get 'x' number of blips to start and 4 re-inforcement blips per turn... Its a way to re-introduce a points system, allows you to customize your own squad, but you don't have to be the lowest point bidder to play the marines... I've always turned the table with my opponent for each game... the first time through we role dice to see who gets to choose to be the marines first, then we swap sides after the game is over.

(By the way, the points that I list above are not even close to what's in the ibook, I was just giving an example.)

This weekend I'm playing the "No Escape" and "Hard Vaccuum" missions...

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

After my parents gave me the "4th" edition Box for X-Mas (I will leave it sealed), and the son of my Girlfriend (20 yrs....the son, not the mum) asked me for playing it, I reactivated my 2 sets of the first edition, and the 2nd edition, and the 3rd one (1 set each). I started to paint some 3D furniture for my Hulks.
I played dozens, hundreds of games with the first ed., was a little dissappointed about the second ed., and really liked the 3rd one, as it brings a simple psychic system (I loved the first one, but it slowed the game down).
Meanwhile I play a mix from the 3 editions with some house rules. It's mainly first edition (esp. line of sight rules, sustained fire and overwatch, AC has full auto). I still playtest the "guard" order with the 1st ed. It seems to be a little overpowered if you use the weapon values of the 1st ed. (1d+2 TH without sergeant bonus, 2d+2 LC).
After a friend insisted on playing the 2nd. ed. flamer (i prefer the section effect of the 1st., he likes the chain of fire), i decided, that there is no reason, why only one should be played. So in some of my homemade missions, the Terminators had 2 different flamer models, MKI and MKII, for different strategic tasks. Moreover, when I started to play SH (in the very early 90s) I introduced the house rule, that "section effect" doesnt include a whole tile, but the target square plus the adjacent squares.

When I read through the Space Hulk topics here, I always see people asking: "How can I include a Captain?" "What about Orcs in SH?" and so on...
For all of you, who don't know, what i meant with "full-auto", who are wondering about different LOS rules or want to include other races, this link could be quite useful.

Maybe it was posted before. The Space Hulk Bible includes the 1st ed. rules including the Deathwing and Genestealer expansion rules. Additional rules from White Dwarfs (Eldar e.g), additional forces lists for many races, weapon lists (they failed to include a weapon list for Tyranids and proper Cyclone Rules ).

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

Those house rules for Space Hulk sound pretty good, especially as I have some fond memories of 2nd. Ed SH which 3rd and 4th haven't quite lived up to yet.

    Re: Space Hulk Gameplay

My biggest disappointments with the current limited editions (4 on sale in Plymouth still) is how easy it makes things for marines. After whipping out the 1st ed book the marine players quieten down somewhat...
