A cult of Chaos worshippers is threatening the village! Help root out the evil threat or plot the demise of the village and it inhabitants!
So what is this and how does it work?
This is a simple roleplaying game most commonly known as Mafia, Werewolf or Vampire. The players are randomly split into two teams and the aim of the game is to kill the members of the other team. Only the cult members know who are part of the cult and so the villagers must try to figure out who is a member of the cult and lynch them while the cult must kill off the villagers without drawing attention to themselves and their true motives.
Is it complicated?
No, not really. The game has two turns, day and night. During the day turn all the players will debate and vote on who they want to lynch the following night. The cult members will try to persuade the players to lynch an innocent villager but must be careful, if they are to obvious the villagers will start to suspect them and they could be lynched themselves. During the night a player will be lynched if he/she received enough votes during the day. Every night the cult will also assassinate one player of their choice. If any player has any special abilities these will also be used during the night.
Ok, so how do I play?
You play by interacting with the other players in the game thread. During the day-phases you can post questions to the other players, accuse them of being cult members, encourage other players to vote for someone, plead for someone’s life, discuss theories about who the cult members are etc. There are very few rules to this and you can pretty much post whatever you want, including lies. If you are a cult member you will often be forced to lie to hide your true allegiance. In the thread you and the other players will also cast your lynch-votes. The cult members will also PM each other so that they can plot behind the back of the genuine villagers. As the game progresses players will start to suspect each other of being cultists and you must use your wits and powers of persuasion to steer the lynch-vote in the direction you want it to go.
Some players might also have special roles that give them abilities. Examples of roles are The Witch Hunter who can investigate other players and learn their true identity, The Wizard who can protect players from the cults assassin or the Cult Framer who can cast suspicion on innocent players.
Sounds fun! Where can I learn more about this?
You might want to start with some of the links below, although google can provide you with plenty more. There are lots of different ways to play this game and many different rules and roles that can be used. The purpose of this thread is to discuss what rule and roles people would most like to see in the game.
Since I don't know how many people might want to play I suggest we keep this as simple as possible. Very basic with only a few special roles to make sure that the game runs smoothly for everyone. Unless someone else wants to be the Game Moderator (GM) I will take that upon myself.
I'm thinking we need at least 5 players for an enjoyable game. Not sure if 5 is enough for more than one cultist though? I would probably want 6 or 7 before we add a second cultist. I'm also thinking we need a long day-phase, maybe 48+ hours IRL, to make sure that people from different timezones have enough time to interact with each other.
I will post some suggested rules later, until then please indicate in the thread if you want to play!
Well, I'm in. I think you are right about only one cultist at the current projected size (5). We will just have to see how it goes. 48hrs seems a little short, I mean i know what you are getting and if the phase is too long we will lose people as well, but maybe a tad longer?
Great to see you! Two more and we can get a game in and who knows maybe a sixth and seventh player find their way here too. Here is my suggested way of playing, please complain if you don't like it! If you think the detailed rules look long and complicated, don't bother reading them! There are only a few things you really need to know in order to play and it's supposed to be fun not tedious. I will make sure that every one who wants to play knows how.
Start Date:
March 11, 2016 @ 12:00 GMT
Player Breakdown:
There are Five (5) players divided between two teams.
The Village has Four (4) players: 3 Villagers and 1 Witchhunter
The Cult has One (1) players: 1 Cult Thug
The GM (Game Moderator) will determine the roles by random number generation and notify each player of their role by private message.
Game turns:
The Game Day is 72 hours long and is followed by a Game Night. The Game Night comes in the form of a post by the GM.
Playing:
Every Game Day players indicate who they want to lynch by posting their vote in the thread. The vote can be changed as many times as the players wishes. The player does not have to vote.
Winning the Game:
The Cult wins as soon as its numbers are equal to that of the Village.
The Village wins when the cultist is dead.
Detailed Rules (These may refer to concepts not used in this game, like multiple cultist and additioanl roles):
Concept and General Rules:
The game consists of a Day and Night Cycle. Every three (3) real days, the Game Day will end and night actions will take place. The Night Cycle occurs instantly and a new Game Day will begin immediately.
During each Game Day the players will discuss and publicly vote to lynch one (1) player. The Village uses this method to eliminate the Cult, while at the same time the Cult will attempt to get the Village to lynch its own players. A lynched player's role will be revealed in the thread by the GM. (Villagers are not told who is on their own team).
The Cult secretly work together to assassinate one (1) player each Game Night. The Cult know who their own members are and can communicate privately, so they will always attempt to kill a Villager. A killed player's role will be revealed in the thread by the GM.
Players are allowed to lie. They may chose to lie about their role, what another player has said to them in a private message, any information they have discovered through their special ability, whom they do or do not suspect or even if they have chosen to use their special ability.
Suicide Rule: All living players *MUST* make a post once per Game Day (72 Hours). This ensures that they are still participating in the game. If a player does not post once per Game Day they will commit suicide and be eliminated. Their role will be revealed in the thread by the GM. This will *NOT* affect the day/night cycle, and the Lynch Vote and night actions will proceed as normal.
Using Abilities and Making Posts:
Using Abilities and Making Posts:
The Witchhunter, and Cultists communicate the functions of their special abilities each Game Day to the GM by private message. Their choices can be revised until "nightfall". (The end of the Game Day). If one of these player's has not sent their choice to the GM by the end of the Game Day, then they will forfeit the use of their special ability for that Game Night.
Any living player can leave a message with the GM to be posted in the thread upon that player's death. This must be done before nightfall and can be revised as many times as they want. This message is only valid for that Game Day, and will not be automatically carried over. You must inform the GM each Game Day if you wish to use the same message, or simply send a new one.
Only *LIVING* players can post in the thread, and they may do so as much as they want. Non-Players and Dead Players may *NOT* post in this thread. Please respect this rule!
Roles and Private Messages:
Village Roles:
The Villager is the default role and carries no special ability.
The Witchhunter can secretly investigate one (1) player each Game Night. He will be told by private message if the player is "Suspicious" or "Non-Suspicious". Cultists will always be reported as "Suspicious". Villagers will be reported as "Non-Suspicious".
Cult Roles:
The Cult Thug can send a "Kill Order" to the GM with the name of one (1) player that they have agreed to "assassinate" during the Game Night. This choice can be revised as many times as they want up until nightfall. If multiple Kill Orders with different targets are given to the GM, then the last one sent before nightfall will be used.
Private Messages:
All living players may send a private message to any other living player.
All Villagers who send a private message must post to the thread the fact of the message and to whom it was sent. This includes the initial message and all replies. The recipient of the message must also post to the thread the fact that they have received a private message, and if they have replied. (The content of the message can remain private).
Messages between Cultists are silent. However the Cult can attempt to confuse the Villagers by choosing to announce a Cult-to-Cult message as if it were a Villager-to-Villager message.
Cult-to-Villager private messages are allowed and shall be treated like Villager-to-Villager private messages. They must post to the thread the fact that a private message has been sent and to whom, including any replies. (The content of the message can remain private).
The content of a private message *CAN* be quoted both publicly in the thread and in private messages to other players. This can also include the creation of "fake" quotes. Screenshots of private messages may *NOT* be used!
Messages from the GM may *NOT* be quoted.
The use of private conversations via IRC (or any other form of communication) shall be considered a private message.
Non Game-Related private messages between two players do *NOT* need to be announced.
Voting and Order of Actions:
The Lynch Vote:
The lynch vote displays the players who currently have votes against them, the number of votes they currently have, and who each player has voted for. The Game Day is also shown.
Any living player can vote during the Game Day to lynch any other player. They do not need to give a reason. Players may also choose to vote for no one by using "No Quorum". (You are allowed to change your vote as often as you would like, up until nightfall).
Players are *NOT* required to make a lynch vote.
Players *ARE* allowed to completely remove their own vote.
The current lynch vote is only required to be posted when you are actually making or changing your vote. (However including the current lynch vote whenever you make a post is always appreciated. Please just make sure it is correct).
Any player who receives a majority of lynch votes by nightfall will be lynched. A lynching will *NOT* occur without a majority of all the votes that have been made. (In the event of a tie, neither player will be lynched!)
Due to the Order of Actions, a Lynched player will *NOT* be able to perform their special ability.
The lynch vote is a tool and shall *NOT* be intentionally altered as an attempt to create confusion. The GM will have the final word in the event of an error with the lynch vote.
How to Vote:
When making a vote for the first time during a new Game Day, put the name of the player you are voting for with a + in front of it.
If you are switching a vote you have previously made, put the name of the new person you are voting for with a + in front of it and then put a - in front of the name of the player who you are no longer voting for.
When making or changing your vote, either add or subtract the number of votes a player has *AND* put your name next to the person whom you have voted for in ( )'s.
If you are removing your vote, simply subtract the number of votes a player has and remove your name from the ( )'s.
From the example we can easily see that MOMUS has changed his vote from blackcherry to Zombie P. We can also see all the players that have currently voted during Game Day 1, and who they have voted for.
If this was the Current Lynch Vote when Game Day 5 ended, then no-one would be lynched as there is no majority. (With 5 votes on the board a single player would need 3 votes against them in order to be lynched).
Order of Actions:
While the Night Phase occurs instantly and in a single post, the following order is used to determine the results of the Game Night. Lynching -> Cult Assassination -> Witchhunter Investigation.
1st, the Lynch vote is tallied. If a player has the majority of votes, they will be lynched.
2nd, Assassinations are performed.
3rd, Witchhunter investigation takes place.
Some examples of what could happen based on this order:
If the Witchhunter is Lynched or Assassinated, his investigation will *NOT* take place.
