Captain Brown Paints Craftworld Eldar - Alaitoc (from very, very old models)

Well, with my Sisters of Battle and Ork logs getting finished I decided to pull out one of my earlier armies, a challenge I attempted to carry out in 2008 only to see my plans collapse in work time eating too much painting time. Long time read readers of the WarSeer Painting Support Group will note I have had Eldar models, which have been on my painting ‘to-do’ list for ages.

I first came across the Eldar with White Dwarf 105 in late 1988, although as an opponent…as Harlequins were not really my thing and did not capture my imagination. They were one of the lists in Rogue Trader, and other than their Shuriken Catapults being really inexpensive and making mince-meat of my Imperial Guard there were mostly a non-entity. This was due to our primary Eldar player never painting his models and eventually dropping out of the hobby altogether.

It was not until July or August 1990 when White Dwarf 127 made it’s way to the hobby shops out here that my interest was piqued. After reading the background I became convinced this was the next army for me and immediately sought out some Eldar models…sadly it was the same time as everyone else and almost no Eldar were available in Canada.

In the fall I found a few blisters (this is back when it was 5 lead models to a blister) so a small army of 5 Guardians, 5 Dire Avengers, 5 Howling Banshees, 5 Fire Dragons, a War Walker, a Farseer and a Warlock...you could say I started dabbling.

My Eldar army really started in the fall of 1991 with the White Dwarf articles on the Alaitoc Craftworld and a posting in a message board on GW figures. I found someone in Richmond who wanted to sell off their Eldar army. So a visit out and at prices of fifty-cents a figure I picked up a whole load of them…I think my Dreadnought was $5. Then came the task of painting them, it was one of my first painted armies.

Then in 1992 or 93 when Mark Dance was winning Golden Daemon awards he showed me some of the Phoenix Lords he was going to paint (he had recieved the early releases due to his painting success on a trip to the UK) and as soon as they were released I picked up several of them.

Later I added a Falcon and updated my weapon’s platform and Dreadnought. Unlike my Guard and Marine armies that would be sold off, for some reason I kept the Eldar. I did not play them to often, especially in editions where they were nearly an automatic win.

So I have decided to put up my Eldar as a painting log, even though most of them are a little ‘long-in-the-tooth'. Lets face it, the models come from an era when chain mail was considered a suitable armour type in 40K.

So let's begin with an Avatar of the Bloody Handed God as a starting point.

    The long painting war continues…

So with Alaitoc you need Rangers, so a small squad to fill a troop choice.

Some head and weapon swaps for models with old Las pistols and models I wanted to look a little different.

Man, old Randers are old! I think the rifles are what date them more than anything else. The change in the Eldar's weapon aesthetic over time as been interesting. Lovely blending on the Avatar as well.

    Thank you Inquisitor Engel,

Some of those Rangers have been striped and repainted several times (and a couple of new additions recently with the changes in 8th).

Next up some repainted Dire Avengers (unit of 10 with an Exarch).

Some yellow on the helmet hair representing the Alaitoc colours while the models are in the traditional Aspect colours.

All the models from Rogue Trader or 2nd Edition days.

    Cheers,

Another small unit of Eldar Rangers.

A pair of head swaps, one from one model to another and a second was a plastic head from the Guardian sprue.

A unit of updated Fire Dragons and an Exarch with a Fire Pike.

I think I will do the gems in the helmets for a little more contrast.

Re: Captain Brown Paints Craftworld Eldar - Alaitoc (from very, very old models)

    Thank you Angelwing,

The last of the small squads of Eldar Rangers:

Two head swaps on these. Now I can field these as four units of five or two units of ten.

I have had these models a long time, here are some in their first incarnation when my groups gaming table was green and our terrain rolling hills and trees so that they could double for WFB.

When I decided I wanted to update them I did try these two models as a test, but found them too dark and the reason for the Wraith bone colouring of the sniper rifles.

Another ten Dire Avengers with an Exarch.

Between the two units there is every Dire Avenger pose a few times, although most are the standing pose that was the first iteration and some of those are lead.

That dire Avenger Exarch is still one of my favourite GW minis of all time. He leads my squad to this day. So much character in one model.

How are you finding painting all that metal?

Re: Captain Brown Paints Craftworld Eldar - Alaitoc (from very, very old models)

Thank you for the comments Inquisitor Engel and CBC.

Inquisitor Engel, I have found it rewarding...although that is likely because they are Jes Goodwin sculpts (at least I am pretty certain they are Goodwin's work) and they bring back so many memories of Rogue Trader and then Second Edition.

While this model is not a Jes Goodwin sculpt, it is a first run Eldar Forge World Wave Serpent (a model that is on it's third iteration now with the plastic model).

    Armed with three Shuriken Cannons.

The mottling looks great and the variations in gem colours really give it some nice spot colour.

I'm still partial to the old Epic version (2nd iteration, since the OG has it ... Well it's a boat) of the Wave Serpent myself, but the FW definitely sets itself apart from the regular Falcon better than the current plastic one IMHO.

Re: Captain Brown Paints Craftworld Eldar - Alaitoc (from very, very old models)

    Thanks Inquisitor Engel,

I think that Armorcast made a 40k version of the Epic Wave Serpent.

Third oop Wave Serpent completed. This one with a twin-linked Bright Lance and a hull mounted Shuriken Cannon.

This one was a complete build and paint. You might see the very slight change in colour tone from the hull of the first two (or maybe you cannot and that was the desired effect).

Another new addition...or an old one that was finally painted after a decade of sitting in storage. Seven of the ten models and the support weapon are all newly painted.
