Chapter 1
Aboard the Zealot’s Heart, Inquisitor Jeremias re-iterates to the children (and any readers who can’t remember the last chapter of the previous book) that Captain Amity and Fleapit are really baddies who have been after the Diadem of Transference all along.
Targian is referenced as Talen’s homeworld; but it was Zealia’s too according to Attack of the Necron (not that she seemed to notice either).
They set course for the forge world of Aparitus. When they arrive, rather than landing, they casually teleport down to the surface. It’s fine; these kids have been exposed to the warp before.
Chapter 2
The group meet the Inquisitor’s contact, a techpriest named Nalos, who seems remarkably unfazed that there are multiple strange children in his workshop now.
Mekki is uncomfortable because something something tech heresy.
Nalos has built a psychic amplifier, which Jeremias can use to track individuals using his powers, so long as he has an object which they have touched recently (which was how he found the children back in Claws of the Genestealer.
Talen has one of Amity’s brooches, which he acquired on Weald. Did Jeremias know that he had it? What was the plan for locating Amity otherwise? Why are they even here if Jeremias doesn’t know about the brooch?
As Jeremias demands that more power be fed to the machine, the children are all adversely affected by warp-stuff. Nalos objects, but is barged aside by Corlac, the Inquisitor’s servo skull companion.
An apparition of a terrible monster (a Great Unclean One-alike) rears up behind the Inquisitor; then the machine goes pop and Zelia blacks out.
Chapter 3
Talen wakes up Zelia.
The psychic amplifier has overloaded and is badly damaged. Jeremias demands that Nalos fix it, and that Mekki assist. A whole world of techpriests, and he’s going to rely on an eleven year old child who he’s only known for a couple of hours. Doesn’t Nalos have anybody who can assist instead?
There is a knock at the door. In barges Quigox - a female techpriest – and three skitarii. She demands that Nalos turn over the ‘renegade’; who it turns out is Mekki. Apparently she has cameras in every building in the city, and somehow has spotted and identified Mekki.
Mekki’s electoos are apparently the mark of the Innovatum Cult, which his parents belonged to.
Ok, sure. The borderline heretical cult have incredibly obvious markings visible to all. Checks out.
Nalos attempts to defend Mekki (...for some reason..?) but Quigox threatens force.
Chapter 4
Talen tries to attack Quigox with a wrench. He gets it shot out of his hand for his trouble. Jeremias’ cyber mastiff, Grimm, attacks the techpriestess as she grabs Mekki, allowing him to escape, but he is immediately recaptured by one of the skitarii.
Jermeias re-appears and orders everyone to stop fighting, claiming that the children are under his protection. The Inquisition technically has no jurisdiction over the Adeptus Mechanicus (which Quigox doesn’t seem to be aware of) but he claims that he can have the entire world investigated in such detail that it will cause delays and missed quotas (again, the Inquisition technically has no power on forgeworlds, or within Mechanicus holdings, so it should be rather an empty threat, especially since Mekki is a wanted tech heretic, but Quigox relents and releases him.
As Quigox leaves, Jermeias orders Mekki and Zelia to search for spying equipment (bit late now...), Corlak to assist Nalos with repairing the device (so Mekki wasn’t needed before then!), and takes Talen aside for a secretive task.
Chapter 5
Jeremias reveals that he has Talen’s toy soldier. He tells him that he is strong for defending his friends, and that they can work together to recover the Diadem and make everything better. A giant neon sign saying ‘baddie’ appears over Jeremias’ head, but only I can see it.
Amity is apparently close by. How did she know where the children went?
Chapter 6
Mekki doesn’t trust Jeremias. He is trying to use a terminal to contact the Profiteer so that he can get Fleapit’s side of the story. He needs a more powerful transmitter, and locates a vox tower elsewhere in the city.
Mekki says that he has known Inquisitors before, which is why he doesn’t trust them. He and Zelia set off to the vox tower, leaving Talen behind. Zelia rationalises that she should go with Mekki because he needs her; but does Talen not need her too?
Chapter 7
Jeremias and Nalos try the psychic amplifier again. It goes just as poorly the second time around. Jeremis insists that they continue, as he almost has Amity’s location. Nalos plugs himself into the machine and turns green and grows boils.
Chapter 8
Mekki tells Zelia about how, on Mars, his parents were part of a cult which believed that reliance on STCs was holding humanity back. Mekki and his mother innovated the brace which supports his wasted arm, rather than replacing it with a bionic. They were betrayed to the Inquisition (which has no jurisdiction in such matters) and they were all going to be turned into servitors. Mekki escaped (somehow. He’s three years old. How does a three year old child get offworld?) and had some unspecified adventures before joining up with Zelia’s mother.
It begins to rain acid, and the children hurry to the vox tower.
Chapter 9
Plague-zombie-Nalos attacks Talen, who opens the door to the room, allowing Grimm back in to attack the corrupted techpriest. Talen and Corlak release Jeremias from the psychic amplifier, and they all flee as Grimm is torn in half by Nalos. Poor doggo.
They lock Nalos in his lab, and discover that Mekki and Zelia are missing. Corlac uses the terminal Mekki attempted to send his message on to discover that he is trying to contact the Profiteer.
Jeremias claims that Mekki and Zelia have betrayed Talen, and might have been in on it from the very start – which Talen should be able to work out is insane, but buys into.
They arm up, and set out in pursuit.
They encounter multiple corrupted techpriests. Somehow the plague has spread beyond Nalos. Jeremias chops one down with his sword.
Chapter 10
Zelia steals a grav sled and tells Mekki to ‘supercharge the grav generators’ like he did with the speeder on Targian to escape the Necron scarabs, so that they can get to a loading platform part way up the vox tower. A nearby serf tries to stop them, but gets lifted into the air, then dropped back to the ground to lie in the acidic rain for her trouble.
The sled flies up, but burns out part way, depositing the children on top of a speeding maglev train. They run along the train, and then jump off onto a passing speeder, and then leap from that to the tower platform. They fall short, with Mekki grabbing the edge of the platform with one hand, and catching Zelia with the other (he’s and eleven year old child – there’s no way that he can possibly catch the weight of two children.
The brace on his arm is damaged, but they otherwise make it onto the platform fine. Mekki opens the door into the tower (something else he’s able to interface with without issue).
Chapter 11
Talen and Jeremias are surrounded by plague zombies. Talen thinks that this is Zelia’s fault for abandoning him. Corlak is missing. Jeremias cuts down a bunch of enemies, but he is still weak, and they are about to be overrun...
When suddenly the servo skull reappears, piloting a grav speeder. What? If it can pilot a starship, driving a car makes total sense for something a servo skull can do.
A zombie clings onto the bonnet and tries to break through the windscreen. Corlak electrifies the window frame (it makes sense! He’s a Swiss Army skull!), causing the zombie to explode into nurglings. Righto. Carry on...
Chapter 12
Mekki and Zelia reach a cogitator and send a message to Fleapit ‘on a frequency of his own devising’.
Talen contacts Zelia on her personal vox, but Mekki stops her from telling him where they are, arguing that they can no longer trust the ex-ganger because he is with the Inquisitor.
Talen suggests that his group could locate Mekki by tracking Zelia’s vox signal. Corlak can do that. Obviously.
Why are they even searching for Zelia and Mekki again? They don’t actually need them for anything. Talen thinks that they betrayed him, and Jeremias knows that the Diadem is with Amity...
Mekki has boosted the power of his vox signal to cover ‘three to four star systems’. Then Quigox bursts into the room!
Chapter 13
Quigox threatens Mekki and demands to know what he has done to the transmitter. Zelia immediately says that they are trying to contact Fleapit, who is an alien, and is coming to meet them.
I less than a paragraph, Quigox then goes from ‘innovation is punishable by death’ to ’‘Knowledge is power, and thanks to your beast, I will be the most powerful adept on the planet’’. Yikes. Not that she has any reason to think that she is being told the truth, of course, or to think that access to a Jokaero would make her more powerful than the ruling Aparitian Magi...
Talen is flying the nurgling-infested skimmer towards the vox tower. The controls aren’t responding though – according to Jeremias, ’’The Nurglings must have chewed through the air brakes’’.
The skimmer crashes through the window of the very room that Zelia and Mekki are in (what a lucky coincidence!) Jeremias and the Skitarii dispatch the nurglings.
Jeremias calls out Zelia for being a traitor and demands that Quigox turns over Mekki to him (why does he want him?!) Zelia says that Talen shouldn’t trust the Inquisitor because he is a ganger, and so isn’t supposed to listen to authority (...?). Talen says that Zelia should trust Jeremias because something terrible is happening; Quigox demands to know what is going on (how does she have so much intel that she could identify and locate Mekki moments after he arrived on the planet, but doesn’t know that there is a zombie apocalypse in progress right outside the building she is currently in?) Jeremias says that Aparitus is doomed unless he calls the Imperium to help; he doesn’t actually says ‘so give me Mekki or I won’t help you’, but Quigox surrenders custardy to him (again) anyway, so I guess that she a) believes the Inquisitor for some reason, and b) thinks that’s what he’s getting at (what are these arguments characters are making?! Why is everybody so stupid?!)
Jeremias says that they all need to return to Nalos’ workshop because they will be safe there (oh really?! How did he possibly come to that conclusion?)
Talen suggests that they contact Amity via Fleapit and lure her to them with some story about finding a planet brimming with xenotech like the Diadem. Mekki says that he won’t betray Fleapit. Quigox says that she will imitate Mekki to send the message if Jeremias will call in the Space Marines to save Aparitus.
But wouldn’t Fleapit be tracing the source of Mekki’s signal anyway already? Wouldn’t Amity realise that the children are probably with the Inquisitor (having attacked his ship at Weald)? Why would Amity want to get involved with a forge world, xenotech or no? Why is Quigox the one making these decisions for the defence of her world? Why would she not put her faith in the Mechanicus’ armies over the Astartes who aren’t even on world? Does she even know that Jeremias isn’t lying about the world being doomed (she wasn’t even aware of the zombies until a few seconds ago)?
Talen and Zelia argue over whether they should trick Amity. Talen expects to become Jeremias’ apprentice. Quigox finishes her message to Fleapit and then turns into a plague zombie.
Chapter 14
Quigox is shot by a skitarii, and bursts into a swarm of nurglings. The nurglings take down three of the four skitarii, and bite Jeremias.
Zelia, Mekki, Talen, Corlak, Jeremias, and the last skitarii - Kraxx-Eighty-Seven – flee down to the bottom of the vox tower, where they steal commandeer an armoured truck, which Talen drives. WHY IS THE CHILD DRIVING? At least let the flying skull do it! (Corlak says that he can, by the way).
Chapter 15
They are driving back to Nalos’ workshop, when a Kastelan robot tips their transporter over.
Chapter 16
They are just about to be crushed by the corrupted robot when Amity, Grunt, and Fleapit piloting the Enforcer battleshuit from Secrets of the Tau (oh, and Meshwing plus a whole swarm of new servo sprites which all have LASERS!) show up and dispose of the enemy.
How did Amity get here so fast? Can anyone just fly down to the surface of a forge world now? How did Amity know where they were (they’re not at the tower anymore)?
Jeremias demands that the Rogue Trader hand over the Diadem. Amity says ‘Not now. Let’s deal with the zombies first’ (not going to just shoot him? With the giant heavily armed battlesuit? Hello? Anybody?!)
They get to the workshop and go inside, except for the battlesuit, which Fleapit has automated, which stays outside to kill zombies.
Chapter 17
Kraxx-Eighty-Seven kills zombie-Nalos, and then on Jeremias’ orders shoots at a nurgling on Amity’s back. Grunt dives in the way and gets knocked out by the blast. Amity and Jeremias draw swords and go at it. If only you’d used your superior numbers and firepower earlier!
Talen aims Amity’s own gun at her and demands that she hand over the Diadem (...or y’know, utilise that swarm of servo sprites? There are so many ways to resolve this so easily!) Amity says that Fleapit has it (poor monkey gets dropped in it by everybody).
Mekki says that Fleapit won’t give it up; but Zelia says that he should because she is tired of running and getting attacked by monsters, and everybody dying around them all the time, and making mistakes, and the Inquisition is best placed to deal with this situation. She’s actually making a lot of sense for once.
Fleapit just then hands it over, because he doesn’t have a mind of his own, and must do what Zelia says.
Jeremias takes the Diadem, orders Kraxx to guard Amity (who also just gives up), and sends Fleapit and the sprites outside to help the battlesuit (Jeremias taking Mekki’s word that the jokaerro can be trusted, because everyone’s brains have turned to soup!)
Jeremias and Corlak take Talen into the chamber with the psychic amplifier and strap him in. The diadem detaches into two rings.
Chapter 18
Grunt wakes up and knocks out Kraxx.
Mekki brings up a video feed to the amplifier chamber.
Jeremias reveals that he was the source of the Chaos corruption! Oh how could anybody have guessed at this shocking turn of events. It turns out that the man is bad. I can barely contain my surprise.
Amity wasn’t disgraced for selling a load of people into slavery – she actually freed the slaves from a corrupt planetary governor. She’s practically a saint.
Jeremias is going to use the Diadem of Transference and the psychic amplifier to transfer himself into Talen’s body to be free of the corruption. The Inquisitor wants to be in the body of a child and...
OH MY EMPEROR! The Necrons have a means of transferring back into flesh.
Chapter 19
Zombies are breaking down the door. Amity and co. Break into the amplifier chamber, but are too late!
Zelia says that they need to use the teleporter to get out of here, but Corlak refuses to help. Then Jeremias, in the body of Talen, orders Corlak to teleport them all up to the Zealot’s Heart. The servo skull does so, and as soon as they arrive on the ship, Talen shoots the servo-skull, and announces that he isn’t Jeremias after all – it was just a fakeout! Phew.
Amity steals the Inquisition ship, and flies back to teleport Fleapit to safety just as the battlesuit succumbs to the zombies and nurglings.
It turns out that the Diadem of Transference was a fake! Fleapit had seen this whole thing coming when Quigox called the jokaerro Fleapit instead of Flegan-Pala in her fake message. It’s that easy to make a fake Necron artefact in a couple of minutes.
Mekki sends a call for aid to the Space Marines using Jeremias’ ident codes (which I’m sure will never be brought up again...), and the gang set a course for Pastoria – the last potential location of The Emperor’s Seat (except for Terra, which is obviously the correct answer) to find Zelia’s mum.
