    Scratch's 2nd Edition 40k log

Welcome to my log, which will cover my progress collecting classic 40k from way back in 1993.

My plan is to collect a series of small forces, around 1000-1500 points, and paint them as close to the original colour schemes as possible, minus the red, to try and recreate that golden era of the hobby which I crave.

Progress will be slow, so don't expect regular updates, but I will post when I can.

Also, the first batch of photos are a little dark, because its raining, so I will change them later.

I've started with a space wolf army first,

    Ragnar & Ulrik.

It was hard to recreate the grey armour. Mine is a little dark from the 2nd edition wolves, but its not too bad. Same goes for the bases. Lorren forest is the best match to goblin green I could find.
The banners are just colour photo copies, painted with pva glue to seal. I don't have the skills to recreate them myself so cheated this part. They don't look too bad really.

I changed the rune priest slightly by painting the armour trim grey instead of red. think it looks better for it.

    Finally some wolf guard.
So far all of these models are about 95% complete. I just need to add the Ragnar symbol to the shoulder pads and some battle honours which I will do later when my skills improve.

Nice job on the brushwork and nice to have that fuzzy nostalgia feeling

Classic Njal, and some wolf guard termis. I had to mount them on the slightly larger 50mm bases and look much better for it.

I'll have to change the pics soon.

This is exactly the sort of project I would love to do if I had both the time and the money to do it...excellent idea and execution sir!

    Heavy metal!

    Thanks chaps!

    Here's a WIP,

Classic Bjorn and the standard metal dreadnought.

I've added a few modern plastic wolf parts and battle damage to make him more fitting. And I've decided to mount them on regular round bases.

In the old days, most dreadnoughts didn't include bases, (such as Bjorn) which was incredibly annoying since they kept falling over. You had to cut up an old place mat or something to make your own, until they finally brought out those square ones, which I never understood back then because square base's were always associated with Warhammer fantasy, and I hated having a mix of round and squared bases in an army.

Glad to see somethings have improved.

    Interesting!

You should drop by the 2nd ed. memories thread.

I'm ahead of you in retro-collecting since I never actually got rid of the stuff I bought in the 1990s.

I have all of the armies of that edition, though I only use GW figures for some of them. IG, Sisters, Eldar and a portion of Chaos Marines are non-GW origin.

But my Ultramarines are absolutely 100 pure, even down to the vintage Rhinos and Razorbacks. All hail lead Terminators!
Want a better way to fight fantasy battles? Try the revised and expanded Conqueror: Fields of Victory!

Do you like Star Wars but hate the prequels? Ever wish someone came up with a decent story about how a decadent galactic commonwealth descended into chaos and civil war? Look no further.
    A proud player of 2nd edition 40k.

Cool. I was never really a big fan of the boxy dreads (I'd have preferred to see the RT dread be updated) but I do dig the nostalgia factor.

2nd ed memories thread you say...?

Where exactly do I find that?

Hope I haven't started this thread in the wrong spot.

It's just a general thread for all things 2nd ed. This topic of yours is entirely in the right place.

    Re: Scratch's 2nd Edition 40k log

Progress has been painfully slow of late.

I found painting two dreadnoughts at once a bit of a struggle, so I went to just the one. I will finish number two later, as a treat for painting some basic troops.

Now I've found something far more interesting to work on...

    A classic inquisitor.

Still WIP, I need to smooth out the filler under the arms. The standard pose has them far to close to the body.

I couldn't find any pictures of him from GW, and the 2nd ed fluff doesn't say much other than they are all individual agents, some hide and some are flamboyant! Guess the inquisition was a bit of an after thought back then.

so I'm thinking of just painting him in the more standard black, gold and red. Should look bad ass!!!

Now this wouldn't be a 2nd edition log without some plastic orks...

Every ork warlord needs a bodyguard, so I've gone and painted him one...

I was desperate to get hold of a unit of these brutes back in the day, but sadly never did. Now I'm really happy to own one and will defiantly be getting a couple more. The round base really finishes him off. So much better than the square ones, (GW- what were you thinking?).

    Re: Scratch's 2nd Edition 40k log

Lovely stuff... and I agree about the square monster bases in 40K (you had to use them with every big model, urgh!)

We played a long time the 40K 2nd ed. A lot of fond memories here too..

I have a soft spot for RT era/2nd ed greenskins and still collect them. The plastic monopose ones were a good place to start at - hoping to see more
