GW is missing the market share from having a ranked game and we used to go on and on about why that was. The new management likely believes that blowing the whole product line up was a mistake and that there's a profitable way to support the most popular armies.
This is the simplest answer. How much of GW's lore is essentially "a wizard did it" when you break it down? We're also dealing with the Warp, magic, and fantasy writing all at once, there's nothing stopping them from handwaving their way backwards to get an Old World game out.
