Lost Egg's Primaris Chapter - The Battle Crows

    Hi all,

With the coming of 2020 I have been revising my projects, both active and for the future.

I'm autistic and tend to get overloaded easily, at the same time I have a tendency to start projects that are much bigger than I can complete without crashing. So, for the coming year I have put everything else On Hold, to start something new...well... return to a project idea I have tried, without success, a few times. Each time, I have struggled to nail down my idea before starting...but now I think I have it sussed. So, without further waffle I present the...

Inspired by this excellent Lindybeige video my plan is to create a platoon...but...I am officially not placing any further pressure on myself.

This is likely to be a slow burn project with no goals and the freedom to pick other minis to paint up. Now, I do have one other project I will be working on alongside this* and to help prevent overload I plan to flit between them as my desire takes me.

*Age of Bronze - This project is bigger but much more of a personal project. It is a small skirmish game I am creating set in early Bronze Age Britain. It's just for kicks really.

Re: Lost Egg's Primaris Chapter - The Battle Crows

Looking forward to seeing more of this, good luck with it!

Just a few little niggling points I picked up more to highlight than to outright say it's wrong, but...

"Choosers of the Slain" is an informal title for Space Wolves "Wolf Priests" (wolf wolf), to prowl their artic deathworld, watching the primitive tribes battle and raid, and selecting brave, often mortally wounded youths to be spirited away as recruits, hence they are the "choosers of the slain". Different context but something to bear in mind.

"Platoon" sounds like a fancy term for a demi-company, which is the idea that a Battle Company can be split in half, each consisting of three Battleline squads, and one Close and Fire Support squad each, led by either the Company Captain or Chaplain. Primaris Space Marines added a further redundancy of attaching two Lieutenants to a Battle/Reserve Company, thereby allowing it to split into further formations. Speaking of Reserve Companies, if any outside units are attached to the Company, it becomes a "Strike Force", so Vanguard units drawn from the 10th, elites from the 1st, etc. Not saying you're wrong, just that the standard Codex Space Marine are intended to be already pretty flexible.

Last, I dunno if the T'au would merit the creation of a whole Astartes Chapter to deal with them... Chapters tend to be founded with more broader strategic goals, like a "Warden Founding" of holding a vitally important sector which has the only stable warp-routes for a region, or "Bastion Founding" like taking over a region boarding a area of wilderness space which is a haven for Ork Empires, pirates or even the Forces of Chaos, intended to provide a rapid response when they emerge. The Battle Crows could be created in reaction to the T'au Empire's expansion, but given it's on the Eastern Fringe (the galactic wild west if you will, and that was back before the Great Rift) it's more likely they'd be given a mandate to curb any alien encroachment in the region. Even then, it's sort of like sending a Roman Legion to secure the borders while rebellion and barbarians are rampaging through the heartland, your Battle Crows might feel they've been sent away from the real conflict (along the Rift, securing Imperium Sanctus) into the outer darkness, with very little chance of future orders or resupply... but that's rather cool too, right?

    Good luck with your project!

I'd forgotten that the Wolf Priests had that title but I'm not too concerned. Both Norse & Celtic mythology is Indo European and share the idea of female warrior spirits / goddesses that are tied to war & fate; the Valkyries for the Norse & the Morrigan for the Celts. The Valkyries were sent by Odin to harvest those warriors who he felt were good enough to join him in Valhalla while the Morrigan swooped over the battlefield declaring the fate of the warriors below. I was watching one of Jackson Crawfords videos on Valkyries where he suggests that the Valkyrie may well also hint at the seductive nature of war...a cruel mistress who tempts men. So there is a strong connection between the myths that inspired the Wolf Priests and my own chapter.

In our world military a Company normally consists of 3-6 Platoons, each consisting of around 3-5 squads or sections; the numbers vary from country to country and usually also depends on how specialist the forces are so a Special Forces platoon may have fewer while a less experienced platoon might have more sections or squads. A Lieutenant is usually left in command of a platoons (left-in-tenancy). I know Rogue Trader had lieutenants but they were dropped, I think they acted as a mid-level hero. My idea with the platoons is that this is a smaller formation created by the Battle Crows in order to perform their function as commanded by RG, rather than a standard model of Primaris marines.

My idea wasn't that the Battle Crows were founded to defeat the Tau but that RG spotted a weakness in the Imperium's defences; if the Imperium is a garden then the Tau are a small weed that wasn't removed when it was first detected...and now it has grown to become a thorny bush that'll take up time and resources to remove. RG created the Battle Crows as weed pluckers they patrol the galaxy focusing on these smaller weeds, plucking them out whenever they encounter them before they can become a larger threat. Though marines may be seen as overkill for this job I guess RG wanted to make doubly sure that any future threats are ripped out root & stem.

The smaller platoon formation allows for the Battle Crows to spread themselves over a larger area, yet still be effective enough to take down smaller targets. When they find a more stubborn foe they flock together and dive, dive, dive!!!

    Cheers for the feedback

Re: Lost Egg's Primaris Chapter - The Battle Crows

    Well here ya go nitromors!

I just had to take the scope off...why have one on a gun without a stock? Makes no sense to me...not that I've ever fired a gun any more powerful than an air rifle

I'm digging the new beaky's so far, they certainly seem to fit the primaris marines better than the old mk6 ones. This guy is a pretty standard build apart from that...oh yeah I carved the skull off the helmet as well. I would have liked to give all my marines a knife too but you only get a couple in the Intercessor kit. Tis all good though.

Re: Lost Egg's Primaris Chapter - The Battle Crows

    Thanks Nitromors!

Now Warseer is working again I can post some progress...finished painting my first guy...

Pretty happy with how he has turned out though I think I had envisaged the armour as being a bit lighter but the slightly darker look is growing on me. The colour of the right shoulder trim denotes his company while the colours on his left knee pad denote his squad number and his platoon number, so he's from the 1st Squad of the 6th Platoon of the 7th Company.

I am really, really digging the new beaky helms

I always managed to build the squad sergeant...

Only a wee bit of conversion here, the power fist is from the Calth marines and was cut so I could rotate the hand slightly; I also made the bolt rifle out of two different gun so I didn't have a strap hanging down...I hate those things...either all guns should have them or none This fella is mostly painted now but it will still take me a while to finish him.

Finally, 2 weeks later I've finished this fella...

The only real difference for this fella is the red helmet stripe and the power fist; I'm pretty happy with the effect I used for the fingers of the fist, blending purple and blue washes. He seemed to take an age to finish painting as have been busy re-decorating our lounge but we are just about done now so hopefully the next trooper will be quicker.

Just a small update tonight with my third marine built and ready for undercoating and a lick of paint...

Not getting a lot of hobby time at the moment so he may well take a while to paint up.

    Next guy is built!

I decided to go with the reloading marine this time...I didn't really need to do much beyond scraping off the skull on the helm, though I did decide to carve out a slot in the bolter for the magazine. Hopefully I will start painting this fella tonight and once he's done I only have one more guy to go until the first squad is done.

Re: Lost Egg's Primaris Chapter - The Battle Crows

Took me almost a month but finally finished painting this guy...

Now he's done I've realised he is making a meal of reloading his bolter...surely they'd have a button to press to expel the spent cartridge and slot a new one in with the left hand...this guy though likes to leisurely pass his bolter over to his left and then switch his magazine...odd sculpting choice now I've thought of it and a tad disappointing. Oh well.

Hopefully this weekend I can start the last guy from this squad. I keep flitting between loving the squad so far and finding it a bit of a chore to finish 5 guys...doh...

    Nice work Lost Egg.

No one is going to notice that once he is with his squad mates.

Really like the theme of the army and the fact your using corvus helmets!, likewise to captain brown's remarks no one will notice once he is amongst his fellows. I think the scheme is very nice, the white helmets and squad markings really tie in with the green and black well, and the purple shoulder trim is a nice touch.

Thanks guys Yeah I know few are likely to notice but its just one of those things that will bug me slightly.

This project has really gone off the boil now as in the lock down my family has been playing a lot of HeroQuest (the kids love it) but maybe the new edition will pull me back; I particularly like the talk of Combat Patrol games but will have to wait and see if thats just a token gesture or something more solid.
