Codex Adeptus Astartes: Angels Of Vengeance (7th Edition)
Preamble
Some of you will know of my Angels Of Vengeance Supplement from this very forum. That was a project that spawned from something I originally started around when I first joined the forum in 2010. It took me almost half-a-decade for me to work up the courage for it to go from a dozen or so roughly scribbled ideas in a battered notebook to first posting it in here on Warseer. And over since then, another half-decade has passed, and now with a global pandemic (and having just turned twenty-five), I wanted to give this decade-long project a proper finale. The sendoff it really deserved. Which is where this new thread comes in Over the coming days, weeks, and months I plan to lovingly transcribe and update every aspect of the Supplement into this new thread, adding in all the history and lore one would expect from an official Warhammer: 40,000 Codex. Below, in this post, you should find the Codex's Contents with links to each article, unit, character and glossary, all there for your ease of navigation. This will be a long process, and will probably cover pages and pages of this thread, so I ask you: please, please can you wait to post any comments and reactions until I have added the last entry and announced the project's completion. Though, I will still be more than happy to receive any and all comments and replies until that moment via Message.
Now, with that out of the way: on to the design outline and then the Codex's contents!
DESIGN OUTLINE
The Angels Of Vengeance, like the majority of Successor Chapters, do not have all that much officially confirmed background information, and what little we do have either isn't presented as more than rumours or lacks the substance to really base an entire Codex off of. Due to that, there are more than a few inferences I have made in addition to any of my own background information I have then created, expanding upon ideas and themes that already exist within the Angels Of Vengeance's background and lore. What we do officially know about the Angels Of Vengeance is listed below:
- They are highly stubborn warriors, even more so than the Dark Angels themselves, refusing to retreat even in the face of insurmountable odds. This has led to them suffering horrendous losses on more than one occasion. Yet it has also led to victory more often than not in situations even other Astartes Chapters would call unwinnable.
- Unlike other Successor Chapters, the Angels Of Vengeance's Chapter colours, not the Dark Angels, most resemble the original colours worn by their progenitors, the Dark Angels Legion, during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras.
- The Angels Of Vengeance's 1st and 2nd Company analogues are known as the Dreadwing and Raptorwing. The Dreadwing being the name given to one of the six specialised "wing" formations of the Dark Angels Space Marine Legion that existed during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras.
- The Dreadwing of the Dark Angels Legion was specialised in the use of tactics to defeat the worse foes faced by the Ist Legion on the battlefield and was deployed when there seemed to be no other way to destroy an enemy. And was also the only formation of the Dark Angels Legion known to employ the infamous Legion Destroyer Squads.
- The Angels Of Vengeance's Chapter Badge (a stylised white skull wearing a red hood and surrounded by a pair of stylised angelic wings), greatly resembles 'The Reaper', an honour mark of the 1st Legion, often associated with the Legion's Terran veterans, those who had served during the conquest of the Sol System.
- We also know that when reunited with The Lion the old Legion fought in a very similar manner as the Angels Of Vengeance modus operandi, with some whispering it was to prove themselves worthy of their new lord, with others saying that they bled to make right their failure to destroy the Rangda when first they met.
It is from these six points I have distilled the basic structure and identity of the Angels Of Vengeance Chapter you will see in this Codex. They are a stubborn and unyielding Chapter originally formed from those of the 1st Legion who had fought during the conquest fo the Sol System, constantly fighting to avenge and make right the failures of the Dark Angels Legion during Luther's betrayal. Their Deathwing equivalent, the Dreadwing fights in with a similar operation style and weaponry to that of the original Dreadwing, though combined with the mass Terminator assaults common of the current Deathwing of the Dark Angels Chapter. In comparison, the Raptorwing, while as skilled as their Ravenwing brethren, fight less as a cavalry analogue, but more akin to hunters or the predatory birds of their namesake - stalking their unaware targets from a distance before using their talons to grasp and kill their prey. Lastly, due to the Chapter's nature of being born from those warriors who fought alongside The Emperor Of Mankind himself, the Chapter maintains a lot of the traditions and organisational structure of the 1st Legion prior to the reunification with The Lion, though there has obviously been some dilution of these traditions and distortions over positions and titles across the passage of ten-thousand-years. While this means that there is definitely less secrecy and obfuscation within the Angels Of Vengeance Chapter compared to both the current Dark Angels Chapter and the Legion that came before it, that does not mean that it does not exist within it at all.
