Returning Player - Very Confused, Not Sure Where To Begin

    Hello everyone,

I'm a returning player who has been out of the loop for around 15 years or so. I got back into it recently due to my 8 year old son showing an interest, so I went to a local Warhammer store with him, and not only did he get hooked on 40k and painted his first two space marines, but he's asking me to build an army so we can work on things together and then play each other.

However, coming back from a previous Dark Angels player, things look kinda the same, but very different, if you get my meaning.

I'm wondering if there are any good resources for learning what's happened since I last played. Are there any good army planners online these days, or any kind of "Read this to catch up on what happened in 40k" videos or forum posts?

I'll be getting the new rules with the Command Edition starter kit my son is wanting for Christmas, and I intend to grab the Space Marine codex, as well as whatever Codex I end up selecting for an army. Do I need anything else?

Thank you all, and it's nice to be back on Warseer again!

As is usually the case, you are on the right track with getting the starter kit. Also look at the "Getting Started" with whatever the armies that you are interested in as well. That should give you a boost in your models with usually good choices in troops. I am not sure what channels has a "What happened in the past 15 years ago" for the most part. Don't forget that your old Dark Angles are still valid to play.

The core rule book has your basic missions in it. So you do not need to buy the chapter approved until you two feel like you want to play more advanced games. like before you need your codex's. marines are always good for a new beginning player. but if your son has a different army he would like to play. get that one. As long as you are hyped, he will be too.
audible books or actual books for history will let you catch up the old fashion way. But youtube lore channels have some great 40k history buffs and that can catch you up to the timeline for story.
youtube has great paint tutorials, how to play. but, for one as young as your son, go with the rule of cool. whatever model (for his army) he thinks is great looking, that should be the unit he builds and paints.

Its all about having fun. building the models together, painting together, watching how-to video and even reading the books so you two can have something for you to discuss is what it is all about.
