Ok, as this is my first Major terrain build I decided to start with a simple small house using card and balsa wood. It so far has taken me one night. I am using the design found on the GW website, I started by taking some strong cardboard and cutting out the basic pieces then i used "gaffa" tape to hold it while the glue dried. The balsa wood was cut with a stanley knife and attached with PVA glue. Today I will be searching for an empty cereal box to do the roof tiles. I intend to make the town snow themed so if anyone has any ideas for snowy roofs let me know

Erm.. I think thats it. Nothing very exciting here.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Cool! I'll be watching this with great interest as I will shortly be making some buildings in this style for my terrain selection...

    This should be good!

    Thankyou Firestorm40k

I worked on the roof today, luckily my girlfriend came back from reading last night and was quite happy to spend the evening cutting "tiles" 15mm squares of cereal packet cardboard was used. With PVA to keep them in place.

The time and effort you are putting into the roof is making a huge difference, looks real good!!

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

ok final update today as im off to watch the Indianapolis GP !!

I created a wooden strip door from cardboard which i will create a handle for later. I coated the cardboard walls with a 1/4 PVA glue water mix and sprinkled light sand which has created an "olde" effect on the walls. I've finished undercoating the walls and tiles in black. The tiles i hope to paint a slate grey. Im undecided about the walls yet ?

    Thanks you Bugbait

    Any C&C is welcome

I always thought that shingles where made of a hard wood and should be a dark brown to reflect that, if yours are clay then they could be any colour.
I guess traditional walls would be a cream or dirty white colour, if you are making a small village then you could do a mixture.
The clostest I got to making somehting like this was from here -> Wizards of the Coast I made a few of the smaller buildings that are no longer a free download, if I add extra wood detailing they would probably look a bit better, maybe one day.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Ok well ive been trying to post an update for awhile BUT whenever i try to access Warseer from home i get "Server is too Busy" ?? Perhaps that is something to do with the time im accessing ? Anyway im at work and it access's fine. So here we go..

I have given the wood a base coat of dark brown acrylic, this i hope to build on with more browns and ink washes maybe some "ronseal" wood stain ?? i want to keep the wood grain thats on the balsa wood visable so i dont have to draw too much back on it !

The House concrete? stuff has been undercoated a manky yellow (sry no photo) and then painted over with a cream. I chose to do this so the corners, edges and overhang have an aged look where the occupants couldn't be bothered to paint. It looks ok, but seemed alot better in my head ?

It was a bit of a scrappy affair but very enjoyable ! Im very excited about painting the roof tiles !!! :chrome:

The building looks superb, and I hope you don't mind when I shamelessly 'yoink' your design when I make some Fantasy/Medieval buildings/ruins in 2-3 weeks time...

    I'll credit you, of course!

Keep up your good work, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

It is looking really nice. The roof is particularly good, effort paid off.

Have you thought about using foamboard for the walls instead of cardboard? It could help any potential warpage you may get and make a finished building stronger though you don't seem to of had any problem with this building.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

The only warping happened during construction. My measurements were not exact maybe

As for foamboard im interested in having a go ! Its like polystyrene right ?

Im planning my next projects in cardboard, beacause i get tonnes of it FREE at work, but perhaps i should be getting some foamboard for...... experimentation.... (Mad Professor Laugh)

Foamboard is a sheet of polystyrene sandwiched between two thin sheets of card. Stong, light and easily workable. Glue with PVA and can be painted with acrylics etc. If you want to see what Foamboard is like and what it looks like have a look in my Terrain log (see sig for link).

You can get foamboard from Staples (next to Blockbuster video). About nine quid for about five sheets of A3. Should be enough for whatever evil and mad experiments you have planned

If you need more it is best to buy it in bulk as it is a lot cheaper plus the sheets are bigger so you don't have to stuggle if you want walls bigger than A3. I've got the link somewhere for when I bought my Foamboard - 45 quid for alot of foamboard, enough for bunkers, city fight terrain and loads left over.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

    Heres a little update.

I attacked the roof over the weekend with a shed load of Gray. I enjoyed the base coat however the highlighting was a pain so some of it looks a little scrappy

Im pleased with the overall look and im planning the base, thinking of having a trampled fence around the garden and some steppy stones to an outdoor privvy. because i wanted it to be a bit more interactive.

Work is also going ahead with some new terrain ideas il post up some piccies as they progress. But i was inspired while my GF was playing TES IV Oblivion, i got her to take some screenshots for me to study, kinda ancient ruin type affair.

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Ok so last weekend was a busy one as i was performing at the workhouse festival in wales. But i did manage to get the base cut for my house and i also liberated a small toy pig from a childrens farmyard set. No pictures to show as of yet im afraid. Im hoping to get the privvy done soon. Next on the list is cheap flock for the garden.

Also i bought the paint mix for a jade colour, so i shall be experimenting with some statues this week.

Thanks for the compliment Rogue, i intend to put the oblivion ideas on the back burner till im a little more practiced at Terrain building !!

Re: Steam_Giants 1st Fantasy Terrain project

Ok, So im still searching for cheap flock/grass stuff or alternative.

Meanwhile tho, i have had a go at the privvy. Its a wood affair with a squeeky door. So far ive made the base design from stiff cardboard and then used cereal box to make wood slats. I hope to use the paintjob as a way of making them look more wooden. Same method as house with gaffa and glue. oh you may be wondering why the slats are numbered ? Simple answer is im an idiot and during my first attempt i became a few slats short ! Piccies :

I have also been experimenting with a statue however the jade green still needs alot of work, i hope to post i pic of it looking nice this weekend.

I have also started my second big project, this will be a building mid-construction with three archways cut into the base and a roof barely covered. This should make for a totally interactive building ! yay
